Thank you for this valuable information. The question is, how do I make the amaryllis bulb grow larger, because my bulbs get smaller instead of larger?
It's normal if it gets smaller after blooming, for it consumes too much energy, but it should regain size after a few months' care. And they go dormant if tempreture is lower than 10C/50F. For other reasons: sunlight, well-draining rich soil and fertilizer. Besides, if you have a bunch of bulbs growing together, seperating them will help them grow faster. If not any of the above reasons, unpot them to check as I did in the video.
I had this Hippeastrum bulb for Christmas which went several problems of bulb rot. Eventually, a few parts of the bulb remained health, however it wasn’t able to grow properly. Watching this video I supposed that the problem was the basal plate. I cut it, I let it dry for a few days and boom it started to root again and now it’s thriving again!
Wonderful tips, my friend. I do the same with the basal plate but not many take root. Recently, I had a pretty big bulb with a thick basal plate. I separated them & now the basal plate has given out new pups - 6 of them :)
Congrats! I found out that thicker basal plate with roots is more likely to grow bulblets. But anyway, the cut-off basal root is no use at all even if we don't plant it. Just do one more try, and wait for a surprise. :)
I trimmed a comically thick basal plate today, as soon as i trimmed it i realized i probably should have tried to root it first. Oh well. In your opinion do you think i should put it on damp perlite for a couple weeks to try to root it or straight to potting mix?
I didn't plant a basal plate without fresh roots before, but yes, I would suggest you try to put both the basal plate and bulb on damp perlite to root first. Be sure to keep the perlite moist in this process. Wish you good luck!
@@SelectionLife it's been a week and here's the update. I trimmed 2 basal plates from 2 bulbs, one about 1 centimeter thick and the other about 3 cm! The 1 cm one has started pushing out about 5 roots. The 3cm basal plate has no sign of rooting and I suspect it will rot, which actually makes me so happy that I trimmed it to start with because it was so incredibly thick it might have caused issues or rot on the bulb. The bulbs that they came from are all doing well and are rooting. Thanks for your help and advice.
Thank you for update. I am so happy to hear about that! 👍 Don't give up the 3cm basal plate, it is said that the thicker basal plate, the more chance it breeds bulblets. As long as it is neither rot nor dry up, keep it and wait for it.
Great video tk watch, thank you, but you're not saying or showing WHEN to trim the basal plate which is frustrating as I have a gorgeous Amaryllis that was gifted to me 5 yes ago but it refuses to produce more bulbs. I've reached this over and over and can't find the issue with mine. I wish you had talked us through this process.
2:47 These procedures should proceed at temperatures above 20C/68F, as this promotes the growth of new roots. You're welcome, glad it was helpful. Wish you good luck!
Glad it is helpful to you. Perlite will be good for promote roots (Especially for those bulbs after dormancy), but I'm afraid it can't support the long run growth for the plant. The best tempreture is 20-28C/68-82F.
Ciao!
