- Today I'm reviewing Church Bells by The Lemon Twigs.
This is one of the shortest songs I've reviewed but to me, it's one of the best. I wanted to explain why.

Personally, I really enjoy the videos where you're enthusing rather than just reacting to whatever is trending. It's partly what makes this channel the unique, especiale thing what it is.
I don't mind what he content is once he's talking cuz he's HILARIOUS
@@r.c.3614 this is also very true!
@@r.c.3614 this is true!
Yed
Completely agree.
Please interview these guys at some stage. This is one of the best albums I’ve ever purchased in my life.
I cannot live without their music. I am thankful for your initial introduction to these guys. They are brilliant. I’m obsessed. Their musical talent is huge but their voices are equally as beautiful. I agree 100% about Church Bells!
I'm so happy to read others who agree about this song!
Basically listening to the Lemon Twigs in loop since months. Never get bored as it's always unfolding, revealing surprising details, like a giant flower.
Going to see them in October and I’ve been addicted to their stuff lately. Live In Favor of Tomorrow has been on repeat these past couple weeks.
The Lemon Twigs are the most refreshing and awesome new bands that emerged in the last 20 years.
Bot
how is this refreshing sorry? this is old as hell
@@michaelciancetta6397 always a negative nancy, amirite? Go ahead and listen to K-Pop
@@sunshinecoolwater9528 still more refreshing than these ''new'' bands ahhaahahahahahahh
@@michaelciancetta6397 You need to listen to their entire catalog.
It's also a breathtaking experience to hear professional musicians like JH to analyse their music in such a nuanced manner and with great passion too! Thanks for doing this so more people understand that they are far more sophisticated than just a retro band.
Justin, this new hairstyle looks great on you! You are so handsome!👑❤️
YES, I find him attractive also!!😊 Nice smile 😁 and I love his singing voice also!!! - Lanna
The look on your face as you are listening to Church Bells is wonderful. I inadvertently discovered the Twigs thru another band you reviewed and I am so thankful to you! I’ve seen them 6 times since last year and they absolutely incredible. I mentioned Dan’s story about meeting them to Michael. He totally remembered the meeting and was very appreciative of Dan’s chat. Those brothers have to be the most under the radar band of this decade. I’m so fortunate to be seeing them in small venues, but I fear it won’t last!
name dropping sparks in a video about the lemon twigs... all my favourite musicians just came together in one neat little video wow i'm so happy :)
Sparks fn great
The vocal reminds 🎉me of Paul & John & George.
I'm here to watch you, Justine Hawkins, not what the algorithm is promoting. No matter what the analytics say, videos made with enthusiasm will always be better content than videos made just to chase clicks. You rock! Never change!
Aw, thank you for a third Twigs video, Justin. When it comes to the Twigs, you needn't worry about one person watching. They are beloved and have one of the nicest and strongest and most inclusive fanbases I've ever seen. I think it's a testament to the boys themselves, who they attract, how they were raised, etc. You had to have listened to "Never Know" from the Go To School album? Brian duets with Todd Rundgren on that one. Their mom sings harmony. I love seeing you appreciate all the little details. There's an abundance of that in their music. My favorite track on that album is "Pepperment Roses." Love that psychedelic Strawberry Alarm Clock mixed with Hard Day's Night era Beatles influence. Such nice words about their album. They deserve it all, everything. If they release an album any given year, that's the album of the year.
I will watch Justin whatever you talk about. You ease my anxiety. Thank you.
ha!! same!!
Oh, nice classic jean jacket. I miss your videos, but I am really happy things are going so well for The Darkness these days. How can anyone be mad about that! 🙂
I think it's a shirt.
@@mikeg2939 Ah, yeah, it is, you're right!
@@MariaFrancesca But, still a very nice one👍
@@mikeg2939 Still classic denim, yeah! 🙂 Looks good on him.
Brian from the band plays all the strings and horns on the record too, such impressive musicians / songwriters / producers!
One of my favorite bands right now. All their albums get better with more listens. So much depth and talent.
Yes, they are wonderful musicians. My first morning smile. A lovely share. Thank you. 😊
I LOVE your enthusiasm for the twigs. And I love how you articulate how brilliant their arrangements are.
I love when different great artists find each other 🥲👑
Very very beautiful, everything is perfect, they remind me of the Beatles...really worth listening to again an again...thanks Justin love this video..
Album of the year!
i adore the lemon twigs !! so happy to see you review them again 🫶🏻
Glad to hear you're still into The Twigs. They really are great. Also one of the best live bands out there. The band with my 2 favourite guitar players and my 2 favourite drummers...
Great video and extra shout-out from this Twigs fan for guessing the ‘mandolin’ part correctly. They confirmed in an interview that it is indeed a 12-string guitar, with the bottom EQ’d out. Sounds so much like a mandolin to me! Gorgeous stuff.
Yes!!!!!. It’d be simple to state that the Twigs were channeling the Kinks & the Beatles but… but it’s so much more than echos of the past & hell, if you’re going to have influences (everyone does) it surely helps to have impeccable taste.
The craft of songwriting on display is a match for the influence, the musicianship’s as good also, the production, mix, arrangement… all of its absolutely killer.
There has always been bands inspired by decades of music that came before but for me the Twigs stand out because rather than attempt to be one band they distill everything from those eras, The Zombies, Big Star, The Beach Boys, The Beatles etc etc & what comes out after going through them has the ingredients of those bands but the songs are unique. Absolute genius, painfully underrated, so pleased to see you taking the time to release a really wise & passionate take on something you like, for your channel, more of that, this & the episode you did on the Cardiacs have been my favourite two, lesser known bands appraised by someone that can really convey how & why they matter. Brilliant ❤
Ill listen to whatever you post, whenever you have the time❤
The Lemon Twigs are absolutely one of the greatest bands of the past decade. It never ceases to amaze me how much each song of theirs is packed with detail and full of surprises - their songs always go in directions you'd never predict! They're coming to my town this month and I can't wait to see them!
The Lemon Twigs unironically rejuvenated my love for music. They capture the feel of older music so accurately and they are genuinely some of those most talented and multifaceted artists working right now.
My daughter and I've seen them live and were able to meet them. They put on an excellent show and were very gracious. They are talented musicians that deserve major success! Check out their whole catalog, you'll be impressed.
Thanks for another Twigs video, Justin. I ADORE their music and yes I'm not ashamed to say I have often cried at the sheer beauty of the tunes, lyrics, vocals and harmonies. They are the whole package.
The Twigs have gotten better and better. I'm a huge fan and I often feel defensive when they're described as pastiche because they're really producing some of the most incredible music that could rival some of the work they're often compared to. When the new album came out I went on a walk to listen to it and I cried when I heard Church Bells for the first time.
Thanks for the analysis, Justin!
i love the way that you breakdown the song into its component parts. i bought a noisy clan decoder and all of a sudden my vocal lines lyrics have taken on different paths. and yet you are able to add insight and clarity. gawd bless ya guvnor.
They are ridiculously talented singers, songwriters and musicians and can literally do not wrong in my eyes. They also put on one of the best live shows I have seen. Every album is unique and takes you on a different journey. They deserve every success that is coming to them!
Love your hair style and hair color. Look forward to your reviews. You put a different perspective on it that makes me want to check out whoever you're reviewing. Thank you for being you.
As a drummer, may I suggest lowering your crash an inch or two? Or conversely, raising your ride? This way, you’ll shorten the distance between the two, quickening your reflexes and making the overall cymbal setting more ergonomic for you and the viewing public. Love the content - Love the LT’s. Thanks and cheers!🤘
I love hearing you talk about new (to me) artists as you’ve got great taste. Thanks for not sticking to what’s commercially popular as I can’t stand most of it. Also I love your hairstyle and the colour. You’re looking fantastic Justin. Healthy and happy 😊
Loved this! What a fantastic analysis of an incredible song! Discovering this channel is one of the many many things I thank Ren for every day.
I love the LT, you switched me on to them years ago with your channel and last week in Leeds i met them after the gig and told them i saw them first on JHRA....then a week later you met up with them.
Small world
Justin - I will say, you make me smile. I was having a bad morning and watching this video elevated my mood. Thanks for that. Oh, the Lemon Twigs are on back order at my local record shop. No doubt because of this video.
Love this.
Thanks for bringing my attention to it.
Thanks for the heads up on this! Love it, and Sparks is one of my all time faves, got to see them in Philly last year but hoping Lemon Twigs are going to be on tour somewhere near me soon.
Wow! Idles set the bar so high💥...I'll have to check this album out too 👍
Thank you, Justin...and don't worry, we love JHRA, but it can wait. You should do longer tours with The Darkness!!! Tour through the entire Universe!!!🔥🎶🎶🎶
❤️
Glad you covered these guys again mate. I find the music journos so utterly predictable these days, every time I read about the Lemon Twigs it’s the same “they sound like…” or copying the style of”… but so what? It’s a very, very rare thing indeed to be completely unique in the music industry, eventually it’ll become impossible! Most bands sound like another band because they naturally been influenced by them. So the Twigs sound a bit like some bands from the 60’s and 70’s, widely regarded as one of the best and most influential periods in the history of music, that’s a good thing surely 🤷🏼♂️ I like their sound and it takes bands like this to generate an interest from a new generation in older bands from that period. It’s an A+ from me.
Oh, gosh! Lots of XTC layers-under-a-sweet-melody in there, too
Exactly! Sounds like XTC’s “Mummer” through “Nonsuch” period. This is a great song, though.
For some reason the melody reminds me a lot of The Loving
Saw the Lemon Twigs live in Northampton MA. Best concert in a long time! All thanks to your first review of their song, “As long as we’re together”. Thank you!!! They are awesome!
Loving the new look Justin, with the hair and that. You look infinitely more cool than I ever could.
Wow. Thank you for covering this. I’ve never heard them before but I’m now obsessed
It’s truly a fantastic song. And that bridge, that bridge, building to, I guess, the climax of the song. Loved it the first time and love it every time.
But you know we're not here to be force-fed by the algorithm, instead we're here to see what you've got to offer. And thank you for talking about The Lemon Twigs, great record and fantastically crafted tune
I’ve seen these two live twice now and I have loved them both times. They pull what was good about the past and make it new without making it derivative. Hope for more success with the two brothers
In leeds last week when they played "when winter comes around" on acoustic, i swear to go i was transferred to another realm.
What an amazing band
Thanks for introducing me to great stuff! Without this channel I'd be utterly out of the loop!
Love the Lemon Twigs and love "Church Bells." It almost makes me angry that so few people try to write songs like this anymore.
Hey Justin thank you for your love for music. You made me discover amazing músic and one of my fave bands ( bad nervess❤❤❤) you are light and love. Thanks!
You should have radio slot you have the perfect voice for late night driving
Can't say it's my cup of tea but love the breakdowns and always love being introduced to new music regardless.
What a track, what a band. Byrds, Beatles, Beach Boys, 10cc and XTC influences all rolled into a perfect couple of minutes. The Lennon-esque vocals that are dotted into this song are superb.
Love this album…❤ great review as always.
Wow, thank you, another band for me to listen to and enjoy. Hadn’t heard them before until you showed off their music. Thanks again. Looking good Justin 🤘
I saw the band just gave you a shoutout on their Instagram! I feel like they’d be up for an interview. Let’s get it happening!
Well I’ve never heard of them but am here watching as it’s u and I love ur videos and am always wanting to learn info about new music 😊😊❤❤❤❤❤ ps u loooook so bloody gorgeous 😊
Love your JHRA videos. And I also adore how many of my mates and random people I've met that listen to your podcasts also!! 😁 Whenever you upload them, we will be there ready to listen with an open heart and eager ears. We appreciate you because you don't follow a bog standard approach, nor follow a hype etc, you cover things that please you and that's what makes your efforts genuine and an utter joy to listen to. You're a 70s kid ❤️ grew up through the three best eras, for music and humour/personality 😁 and that shines through in everything you do. Just keep doing as you're doing, it's mega!! 🎉🎸❤️
So happy I found your channel! I really enjoy The Darkness and hearing your take on music as a whole is awesome.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the new Fit For An Autopsy song "Hostage"
Subbed, great channel! Love your passion for music!
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnn!!! 🎸🕺🏽🎶🎶
*Fuckin Awkins*
Hi Justin, I saw your concert in Wacken on the livestream, and I have to admit: This was the best performance in Wacken I’ve seen so far. Kudos!
Beatles-esque yet refreshing and modern. Wow. I'm impressed as well. Thank you for sharing this and turning us on to the Lemon Twigs. ❤
Your hair looks fkin amazing man. Glad you're turned onto the Lemon Twigs. They have that flash that sparks a glimmer of what you have. It's pretty fantastic, and so are you. Cheers!
PS I need your haircare regimen! Please help a brother out!
I always say they’re leagues ahead of most songwriters today. The level of care they put into their music is beyond
They are great - thank you for hosting them again, it can only help!
Love your pure reactions and love for music! 👉🔥🖤🔥👈
Lemon Twigs are awesome! Thank you for introducing them to me with your video on As Long as We're Together.
I can hear The Beatles, The Kinks and The Byrds in this and I love it.
Off to see them again later this year.
Dont forget to listen to their input on a lot of Weyes Blood stuff too. Lemon Twigs with added sumptuous otherworldly Karen Carpenterish lead vocals.
The Lemon Twigs are amazing! Thank you so much for covering them!! You're awesome Justin!
Justin, I too have just become obsessed with this band. Thanks for adding some of your musical insights to why. Sometimes I don't know what it is but I know when I am hearing brilliance. Your comment about "protein rich" with no fat beautifully describes their music, as great literature uses minimal words to elucidate a complex idea.
You had me at Todd and XTC. I like it! Thanks Justin❤
You turned me on to the Lemon Twigs with your "My Golden Years" video Justin, and now they're one of my favorite bands. Even going to see them live in November hopefully! Thanks for not only your music but recommending others.
I love your break-downs of songs, genuinely one of the most interesting music reactors on UA-cam. Dont worry about how frequent the content is, I'll still watch it 😂. If you get a moment, id love to see your reaction to Karnivool - Change (Love from heath ledger theatre). Such a complex band, and the vocalist is excellent. And the song has a didgeridoo in it!
Love, love, love the Lemon Twigs! It’s great to hear young musicians keeping this style of music alive :)
I totally thought of Sparks when you showed the album cover.
Def seems a sonic reboot: Lenon's lead vocal timbre? Paul's bass tone? Ring-ringo's (the) bell cymbal sounds? Paul's harmonic vocal timbre? Georges lead guitar tone?
Good musicianship music combining fashions of old under a semblence of being new? Where's the sonic suspense? intrigue? surprise? The emote to connect to... M
Cute little Beatles copy
Hi Justin,
I always love your review … as a Frenchman (and huge fan of Morrissey), it gives me a great light on rock and pop from an expert … but i have to say thank you so much for this review … i didn’t know the Lemon Twigs at all … and what a shock !!! I had not that much in my musical life … but this one is huge !!!! Thanks to you, I’m a fan of them… discovering their songs with admiration and a smile on my face 🙏🙏🙏 ❤
Great video Justin!!! Ive never commented on any of your videos but I've seen many of them!!! You are beyond interesting to listen to.
Quick side note and fan-boying out a bit, but me and my mom used to sing The Dakness' music all the time when i was a young teen. You guys were one of our go to bands. I believe in a thing called love will forever remind me of her. We loved the video and the song. Thank you for being so cool, talented, and funny Justin. You're a hell of a guy.
Love your work JH, the lemon twigs are my favourite band… Appreciate you sharing the love
I love this song jeez. The new album is SOOOO good its unreal
Absolutely love these guys! Last two records have been absolutely brilliant!
Definite Jellyfish influence as well
This was great. And, not surprisingly, I'm hearing Squeeze in this too! Love it!
True, I hear that too. Odd, because I haven't thought Squeeze sound like the Beatles.
I am not sure whether this impression that I’m going to give is based to an extent on the title of this song or not, but I do get a kinks vibe on this song. The kinks wrote a song called. I think ring the bells. It might’ve been a Dave Davies composition. I forget I have to go back and check. Anyway I think you are right Justin to say that there’s not an ounce of fat on this two minute song and that alone I think stand out this age and stands out in a very positive way. I tend to so far their previous album better than this one, but this one also is very good, and this song in particular is one of the standouts. Thanks for reviewing it. Awesome.
Justin, I agree 100%! Thank you, Sir!
JH, your videos are fantastic and I love watching them. But I'm not going to watch the same 10 videos over and over again. A new Darkness album, on the other hand, will provide many years of enjoyment. So if it is a toss up between this channel and the album, then a short hiatus from YT won't be the end of the world ❤
I like how Justin gets enthused about music and explains what is going on in a way that non musicians like me can understand. You'd be a great teacher I reckon! Never heard of the Lemon Twigs the melody and lyrics remind me of Pet Sounds but the guitars come in and sound different and take it in a new direction.
This is the longest song in the world despite being 2:06. It is impossible to stop hearing it on repeat in your head after the song has stopped as it is so damn catchy. Thanks for boosting a great and worthy band
Hi Justin, I have wondered whether you may have heard much of Chappell Roan's music? For some reason I have a feeling you might like her as a performer: powerful vocals, fun visuals, heartfelt ballads and catchy pop tunes! Her song 'Guilty Pleasure' is particularly interesting musically, it features a yodelling solo which is great fun to attempt to sing along to! She stands firm on her morals too which is good to see, but has a silly vibe that reminds me of The Darkness. Anyway just thought as you seemed dismayed at the 'blandification' of current pop, you might enjoy that there are still some pop artists (in my opinion obviously) coming out with more interesting records :) No idea if you'll see this, but hope anyone who does read this has a lovely day x
New hair style looks great Justin :)
This has a bit of Redd Kross circa Third Eye to me. I'd love to hear you talk about some of the music that inspired you as a Lil' Justin.
My cousin has this amazing high speed boat and a cabin in Norway. We blasted Def leppard and darkness while being in paradise at 40 knots before and after your recent show in Bergen which we attended for free. Love on the rocks is the coolest darkness song. Hit and run or ring of fire leppard best. Women cool as well.
I saw them play at Electric Brixton, amazing gig, closed with Good Vibrations ❤ super band.
Don’t miss the Twigs’ live performance from June ‘24 on Arte’s UA-cam channel. Great sound and footage.
