  • We often think of hippies, emos, goths, and metalheads as subcultures? But…what makes a subculture?
Together, we’ll explore the brief definition of a subculture, its origin, and how the modern world changes these subcultures. It’s a fascinating journey for me as subcultures are more than just fashion or music. It’s a way of life with a reflection to our society.

After editing, I realised that, despite my intention to keep this as brief as possible, I should have included more information about the subculture's sociology as well. Still, I enjoy creating and sharing this with you.
So, if you like anything in this video, want to add something, or have any other suggestions, please let me know! 🖤

I once went to a punk club to see my favourite band performing life - it was an unforgetable experience. So many people who not only were dressed similar to me and had similar taste in music, but they were also thinking like me. After all punk is still a subculture ;)

I feel like the term 'subculture' is no longer in use, since they are not as defined as they were back in the day.
However, you've used another word for a group of people with similar interests - a 'community'. It describes the phenomenon way better, as people with different principles can still be parts of the same community. Car enthusiasts, anime fans, makeup artists, fans of a band or music genre etc. They don't have to share the same worldview to be a part of a group.

I'm definitely a part of multi subcultures, including, but not limited to Asian/anime, goth, environmentalism, and most recently, vintage. Vintage was a pretty interesting one that I got into because until I became a model during the pandemic, I didn't think that I had any chance of taking part in any fashion community because I'm not the stereotypical American dumb blonde. However, ever since I became a vintage model, I once again became interested in vintage clothing because I love learning about different fashions throughout ages and to what extent are these clothes considered more practical than today's "fast fashion" sorts of clothes and vice versa. Ironically enough, I wore my mother's hand-me-downs in middle school, not knowing that there was a more refined term for my style, because at the time, being the "Harry Potter" fan that I was, I thought that it'd be cool if I wore other people's "spirits." But then other kids at school got annoyed at me for being obsessed with "Harry Potter." As such, until the pandemic happened, and environmental concerns once again became a hot topic issue in my life, I wasn't able to get into vintage. Plus, I saw an episode of "Daria" in high school in which Jane was dating a guy who was extremely obsessed with vintage culture. Because of that guy, I didn't think that joining the vintage community was a good idea. Little did I know that sometimes, it pays to learn more about history, especially when it comes to the history of fast fashion and the environmental consequences surrounded by it.
As far as Asian/anime goes, I'm half Chinese so for me, those subcultures made me feel comfortable. The irony being that back in my high school days, most Asian kids don't like me being obsessed with anime. While I don't know if it has to do with the fact that the anime industry can run like a sweatshop industry or what, but because of the negative criticism from those Asian kids, along with my belief of artists deserving to get paid as equally as scientists, I've been on and off anime. Also, I now have a fulltime job so the only time that I get to watch anime is when I'm bonding with my big brother and sister figures.
Asian cultures, meanwhile, have been on and off because my boss doesn't like me thinking that I could put my hobbies like learning foreign languages to good use at work, along with the fact that I'm sick and tired of hearing about corrupt Asian governments and high suicide rates amongst Asians on the news. The sad thing behind me being on and off towards my own culture is that even my own mom, who is full-blooded Chinese, doesn't like me thinking that artists have the right to become rich and live comfortable, healthy lives, despite the fact that she knows that I was famous in high school for my creative twists in non-creative fields like science.
Goth, I like it because nowadays especially, it's about taking the bad with the good and not seeing everything as black and white so to speak. The irony being that I used to be scared of goths in middle school because they were stereotyped as being self-loathing haters. It wasn't until college when I became friends with a Jewish goth girl after she and I went through a misunderstanding during Chinese Culture class.
Environmentalism, ever since I read Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" in elementary school, I've been looking for ways to help save the planet and hopefully save money in the future. It hurts to know that most of today's problems like war and corruption are centered around people not taking time to appreciate their environments and future generations will have to pay the cost even further. Luckily, some of my hobbies like vintage fashion wearing do have ties to environmentalism.
While I would go into more detail as to why and how I got involved into these subculture groups, for now, I'll just give a snippet as to who I am. At this point, because one of my hobbies is learning about different languages and cultures on top of Asian ones, I wouldn't be shocked if I accidentally get myself involved in more subcultures, ha ha!

Looking forward to your video on aesthetics. It would be cool if you are able to touch upon some more sociological/philosophical aspects such as a potential correlation between the rise in loneliness and the decline of subcultures in favour of aesthetics. Just watched the video by Armchair Alchemy on internet aesthetics which I can highly recommend on this topic.
Personally I partially identify with several subcultures and appreciate a range of aesthetics which has created a very individualistic profile. This is positive in the sense that I can unapologetically be myself and partake in all communities I identify with. But it is negative in the sense that it can be very alienating, for example being strongly progressive among more conservative-leaning people such as fans of certain metal genres.

A very well thought out topic I appreciate the information you're giving to people. As a goth myself for a very long time I've seen the ups and downs throughout the evolution of the subculture. However I wouldn't change my experience in the subculture for anything.

I never really thought of myself subcultural in that sense, but rather -sub in the sense of a subset within culture.
Ex. Not classical, not Jazz. But Reve Diminuee, the blurry line between mainstream and subculture. Diminished "dream".
The concept of Slipstream or Transrealism also resonates with me.
Or for reading culture, not anti-literary like people Ive known, but Hyper-Literary with an interest in reading things that challenge old values.

My favorite subculture is the furry fandom. It is a very social culture, so I think it is more like the traditional definition in that sense. It's less of an aesthetic and more of a way of interacting with others. And of course there is our shared love of anthropomorphic animals and art. Art is SUPER important to the furry community.

Hello dear! Your videos are very cute, and I like to show them to the students in the art high school. In the fashion drawing class, we thoroughly study subculture and street styles, so I recommend the book Streetstyle by Ted Polhemus. If you've already heard of her - great, if not - I'm glad I can share the information. I look forward to your new videos
