I’ve rebuilt one of those, take it from me, take the whole unit out you can still use the hydraulics to lift and lower the whole machine up and down, take you drive shafts off, take your rear wheels off, place some timber under the transaxle then lower the machine to the ground then remove the four bolts form the transaxle to the frame, then raise the machine with your outrigger legs then wrap a sling around one of the axle housings and drag it out with a vehicle, once out they are so easy to work on, one tip to remember make sure when you put the crown wheel back in that it faces the same way you took it out otherwise you will have 4 reverse and one forward, so to make sure take a photo of the insides looking down before you remove anything for reference 🇦🇺🤙
Good work figuring it out! Would be awesome to see a video on you removing it and fixing or replacing the part too. Good luck man I'll be keeping tabs. I also have a 580c around the same year, so now I'll know what to look out for if I ever start having a similar issue.
I have been standing where you are on my 580C but for a different reason. It started with a brake job and it ended up with me replacing both half shafts and bearings going to the brakes as the gears had a fair amount of spalling. To remove the half shafts which you would have to do to remove the carrier you have to remove the brake assemblies and pull both axle shafts then move the bull gears out of the way to remove them. I cant remember if you can get the carrier out at that point due to that frame support. Its a bog job. Once you pull the axles you need to replace the axle seals and to do that you need to replace the axle bearings. Then when you re-install the half shafts you have to get the bearing pre-load correct while also getting the backlash correct. So much fun but would be easier if the differential is out of the backhoe but that's also another task. Note: The half shaft shims are somewhat difficult to get. I had to get some off e-bay and some from old stock.
I made another video. We welded it up within a few minutes and it's got 10+ hours on the weld. It seems to be holding up great. Still have limited slip also
You didn't watch the whole video, or maybe you were eating, or just didn't listen. The differential is not connecting, he's going to have to pull it out and see why. Others remarked it has rivets that join it to a back plate, who knows.
Hi there I was talking about your video mine was broke like yours I welded it put back together but don’t have 3 4 speed working is there a specific way to put shifter in right all other gears work do you have any ideas thanks
Depends how much work you have to do. I've owned a 10,000$ used John Deere 500C BHL for nearly 20 years now. I've done all kinds of work with this machine. A rental is probably 1,500$-2,000$ a weekend.
Awesome Video we have the exact same issue & couldn't find anything on youtube Thank you So much Great Job

The ring gear is riveted to the carrier... The rivets have let go, and they are probably in the bottom of the case....
These differentials in my opinion are week in that the pinion is tiny. You have to be careful and not jam it in reverse while moving forward, etc.
I agree. Very easy to be to quick on the lever.
Have it? you never said what was wrong with it??? all you said was have to bring it to a shop to rebuild the differential?
🤦

My newtral grinds but won't move forward

Are you going to sell it or fix it?
I was going to buy a used, old backhoe, but the more videos i watch, better to rent one for a day or 2, and not have to deal whith all these problems
