I think the simplest thing escapes most of the people that watch this. Jenny views herself as damaged and keeps running from Forest because she wants to protect him from herself because he is so pure. We hear it from his perspective, so it doesn't make sense to him, but if she narrated it, it would be a very different movie and perspective.

Forrest isn't "retarded" he's a midway point between nonverbal and verbal autism. Drill Sergeant himself said he "must have an IQ of 160." I don't know if he was a genius but he isn't a moron, he has autism. As a fellow spectrum inhabitant, this is not so obvious. For people with undiagnosed autism (like kids or teens) this causes great confusion to a lot of us and we take it out on ourselves. So it would have been better if you just said something.
Also it's illegal to conscript someone with an IQ of lower than 83. This means in the film, Forrest Gump isn't even legally retarded.

His accent in Forrest Gump he actually took from the natural accent of the kid who played his younger self. Production staff tried to force the kid to hide his accent, but Hanks was against that and actually sat down with the kid and recorded the conversations they had. Then listened to the tapes and learned to speak like the kid.

When watching this, the music always triggers memories of my own life, during the time those songs were released, and it feels like watching Forrest's life from my own perspective at the point in time the movie is portraying. Forest Gump's iconic accent actually came about by accident. Originally the plan was for the actor who played Forest as a child would try and adopt a more neutral accent. But after weeks of trying to coach him, he just couldn't drop his distinctive southern drawl. So Tom Hanks proposed that instead of trying to make the kid talk him him, he'd just learn to talk like the kid instead. So he hung around with the kid and learned to pick up his accent and even leaned into it a little to make it part of the character.
It's one of the many reasons Tom Hanks is an acting god.

Jenny's problem is how she was used and abused, 1st by her father, then
by every man she met except Forrest. She felt like she was worth nothing
and was never going to be worth anything and would just bring Forrest
down with her , she had no idea how to love anyone. It wasn't until she
had little Forrest and was given one pure good thing in her life she was
able to find her self worth to a point and then accepted that she loved
Forrest and always had and it was OK to love someone and not expect them
to hurt her. It is very complicated and you get snippets of it in every
scene she is in. The first thing you see is all she knows how to do is
run from anything as she keeps telling Forrest to do , she doesn't know
any other way to deal with the pain and bad and it takes her so long to
finally figure it out ( unfortunately this is true for too many and some
never get to figure anything out) , Jenny deserves pity not hate , she
didn't know how to love until it was too late but she gave Forrest 2
gifts before she left, true love and what it feels like , and someone to
love and give his life meaning in Forrest Jr. . Forrest might not be a
genius but I would lay any bet he is an incredibly loving and good
    father.

Director Robert Zemeckis was being interviewed one time by a critic who kept talking about the film's special effects and finally Zemeckis got irritated and said the movie's not about the special effects. So the critic asked Zemeckis what IS the movie about and Zemeckis said, "Forrest Gump is about grieving." I thought that was strange, but the more I thought about, I realized that fundamentally Forrest Gump is about grieving and loss, but it's also about healing and faith. But that's what attracted Zemeckis to the script and made him want to direct it. Grieving. Forrest grieves over and over but always gets through it with optimism.

She spent many more years running than Forrest ever did, but it took a very long time to leave her past behind.

Hey Isabel! Jenny was never really a "Bad" person to me. I think the people who hate Jenny should really direct the Monster label toward her abusive father instead of Jenny herself. And I think Jenny and Forrest having pretty different paths in their lives helps make this story so good! Overall, this movie is just very inspirational for me, and I also quote it all the time! And my brother actually has Autism, which makes me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother relate in that they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that Last Year, I actually posted a video on my UA-cam channel that was almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something unique.
If you have a few minutes sometime and are interested, here is a link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/Or-sIiNANYg/v-deo.html

    Forrest's run:
I think he ran because he had to do something. He couldn't find Jenny, he couldn't work out why she left, he couldn't handle the silence of her absence. So running gave him something to do, as if he was doing SOMETHING.
It's like when the pandemic first hit. People were freaked out, didn't know what to do. So they went to the stores and started stocking up. There wasn't anything they COULD do, but they felt out of control, so hoarding food, water, and toilet paper felt like they were taking control. Forrest needed to do something, so he ran. And the running kept him occupied, so he kept on running. The running stood between him and the turmoil of his own emotions. Eventually, the pain settled and he didn't need the running to keep him occupied. So he finally was able to go back to his regular life.
    Jenny's issues:
Jenny and her sisters were constantly molested by their father. Jenny learned she had no worth outside of sexual exploitation. Her early molestation made her hyper-sexualized at a young age, so she felt sex was a basis for all relationships. The fact that she had physically-abusive relationships one after the other suggests she was physically as well as sexually abused by her father.
People who suffer abuse end up with low self-esteem; they feel they don't deserve anything better. They also come to expect abuse as a basic component of any relationship. As a result, an absence of abuse is very unsettling. On the one hand, lack of abuse feels 'unnatural'; on the other hand, an unabusive relationship is what the person so dearly wants that they don't trust it being real or being stable, in which case better to not have what you dearly want than to get it and lose it. Either way, the person gets a little freaked out by the lack of abuse.
Abused people live in hurt. They sort of welcome the abuse because they don't feel they deserve better. When they don't have the abuse, they ache for a relationship (expecting it comes with violence) or something better that they don't feel they deserve. Being abused means even when you're in a relationship, you're alone and isolated. And when you're alone, your memories of the early abuse (like with Jenny's father) come back to haunt you. So you self-medicate; you try to numb yourself with drugs. It doesn't work. It never works.
Jenny came back to stay with Forrest because she needed a safe harbor, to finally sort things out. She probably would have stayed, but then he asked her to marry him. And she still couldn't work up the trust that things would work out; she couldn't reconcile her belief that she wasn't worth it, that she didn't deserve Forrest. She gave herself to Forrest that night, because it's the only currency she knows. And because there wasn't so much at stake since she already had decided she was leaving. People oftentimes relent with what they've held back and are generous once they decide it's over, like it's a parting gift.
When Jenny became pregnant with Forrest's child, she got her life together. She sobered up, got stable, dedicated herself to that child. Then she found out she was dying. She had to make arrangements for her son. So she contacted Forrest. Facing death, there was nothing to do but hope it would work out. She felt she had no choices left.
Note that Jenny as a child would pray for God to change her into a bird so she could fly far far away. Every time things got too intense for her, she would find a precipice and consider jumping. The song playing when she climbed up on the edge of that balcony was Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird". Note also that when Jenny pulled Forrest into the cornfield to pray, a flock of birds took off next to her. When Forrest walks back from Jenny's grave, a flock of birds take off between him and Jenny's grave. Note that when Forrest spoke to Jenny at her grave, he mentions destiny and chance, that sometimes we float around on the breeze; then remember the feather that floated to him as he sat on the bus stop bench and flew away at the school bus stop bench. Jenny and Forrest were destined for each other, but she ended up floating in and out of his life like a lost feather in the wind. They were destined, because every time Jenny floated out, their paths would always cross again. Forrest was always her home.

Once you’re sexually abused you don’t feel worthy and she sought destructive men to be with. She didn’t fell worthy to be loved. I’m so glad she saw the truth at the end. Good reaction CU. 😀

As someone from Alabama, it warms my heart to see people from all over the world fall in love with our favorite movie down here.
One thing I wanted to add that a lot of people might not catch: the football coach that he runs past in the beginning of the movie is Paul "Bear" Bryant, who was the coach for the University of Alabama football team and who is extremely well known to this day down here. The black and white checkered hat was a trademark and Houndstooth is still worn when we support the team.
Alabama as a state doesn't have any professional teams, but we love American football, so we support the local amateur players in the same way the Europeans support their local lower-division clubs

It is so refreshing to listen to a reactor who knows history, sees the complexities and nuances in characters, and understands them. It’s just great and not the norm on most reaction channels. Yet he hasn’t posted in 6 months … I hope he will soon. But I don’t think he understood that Jenny knew only one thing…to run. Her childhood abuse physical and sexual impacted her whole life. She ran from life. It’s why she told Forrest to run - “Run Forrest run!” and the reason for her misguided and often dangerous choices in life. And the virus she had was AIDs. Only a man as pure and beautiful as Forrest could love her so unconditionally. But overall, this was another super reaction!
And he has great taste in music!!

Hey Tammie! Forrest Gump is absolutely one of My Top 5 favorite movies! Whenever I watch Forrest Gump, I just find that it is SO engaging and well-acted that it feels like it is a quick watch even though the movie is almost 2 1/2 hours long! And despite it being a fictional story, I still find it to be very inspirational, and it has moments that I think most people can relate to on an emotional level. Also, my brother actually has Autism, which helps me connect with this movie even more (I know Forrest Gump did not have Autism, but him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled).
I really believe in what you say in your comment here. That "Music gets us all through our lives." For that reason, I also just wanted to let you know that Last Year, I actually posted a video on my UA-cam channel that was almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup).

@ 15:45 I seem to recall seeing you and maybe your brother do music reactions a couple of years ago. If true I watched a lot of yours and very glad you did all that music first, before watching Gump. If that's not the case, it's still so cool you know all this music that I grew up with! All the music clips fit the timeline of events in the movie pretty well. Whatever music you're looking for is on the end credits of most movies and listed in the order they occur in the movies. I know someone told you the name of the song you asked about, but if there are any others look for them there.
@ 24:16 The scene you watched here of Gump and Dan crossing the street and Lt. Dan beating the car hood yelling "I'm walking here!!..." is a reenactment of a very memorable scene in a popular movie called "Midnight Cowboy" (1969) with that theme music in it "Everybody's Talkin' " by Harry Nilsson. It was funny in Gump here because in Midnight Cowboy the guy had a bad leg and limped, but could walk all while that music was playing. It's a movie you should check out sometime. Another cult film of the era with 60s music is "Easy Rider" (1969) starring a guy you're familiar with, Jack Nicholson and the role that made him real popular.
A couple of Tom Hanks movie suggestions that should get a lot of views, "Apollo 13" (1995) based on the true events, and "Saving Private Ryan" (1998). ✌ 😎

If you're curious about special effects, it's mostly CGI. In the kennedy scene I think Kennedy was actually added. For Lt. The youtube channel Corridor Crew VFX covers almost all the scenes in different videos.

George, I love your music and movie reviews in general, but was thrilled when I came across this _knowing_ you would know the music and couldn't wait to see the recognition on your face... and the bonus of you singing along.
Fantastic review and very glad others pointed out the "Run, Forrest, run!" that Jenny said from the beginning is what she was saying to herself. She was trying to run from the pain, in all the ways one can avoid inner pain.
She did not tell Forrest about their son because he was running for those 3+ years. When she saw him on TV, that might have been when she wrote Forrest about coming to see her; he was still not finished running, however. Forrest got to her as soon as he could.
If you watch this again, notice all the feather references besides the white feather (a pure Jenny), there are birds flying in and out of their tree in Alabama, the constant references to flying... it was always Jenny flying away until she was buried under the tree, then a flock of birds comes home, representing Jenny's finally being at home now, too. She was at peace, finally, under their tree.

I just discovered your channel. Your reactions are great and very heart warming. When this movie came out, my life was in shambles and I would go to the matinee and watch this movie over and over again. For a few hours a day I was transported from the darkness of my reality to such an innocent heart of Forrest. This movie helped me beyond words. Living my life with gratitude now.
