Yes, but Quint got the date wrong and the distress signal. The cruiser sank on July 30, and not on July 29 as Quint said, and the cruiser sent a distress signal three times, but they were ignored at the stations, considering it a trap for the Japanese.
Richard Dreyfuss is a very good actor in this movie. He is the marine biologist that helps track down the shark. You may know him after this movie in one of the best science fiction movies of the 70s called Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. He has made dozens of movies since this one.
Years ago I worked in a video store & on busy Sundays, I would put this movie on the screens. The entire store would stop and be transfixed at the opening sequence. It still chills me to the bone. Also the actresses actually got injured during that scene. I believe she broke her hip and was screaming in pain for real.
The reporter on the beach on the 4th of July is the author of the book, Jaws. It's a cameo appearance. His name was, Peter Benchley! He helped with the script also.
Steven Spielberg told John Williams that he wanted the score to be in 3/4 or 4/4 time so that people would whistle it because they remember it. John told him, “I can make this score theme with two notes.” Steven said NO! John said, Trust me! He came up with the theme for Jaws with these two ICONIC notes. When you hear them, you automatically know what it is from, no matter your age. He won the Oscar for Best Score! Two years later John was doing the score for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. John had it planned out but Steven said no! I want you to write a score using five notes. John said, “It doesn’t fit any time signature. He could do it in 5/4, but the melody would have to have hemeolas . Steven said, no, only a 5 note theme. Trust me! John wrote it and gave us another ICONIC theme. John was nominated for another Oscar for Best Score. Unfortunately, he did not win. That year’s Oscar for Best Score went to… John Williams for “Star Wars”!! He had been nominated twice in that year and beat himself!! Now normally with Oscars, if someone is nominated twice, either in the same category or in two different categories, they will cancel each one out and not win either. This time was a rare year for Scores. John went on and has the record for most Oscar nominations for Best Score and in a lot of the cases, he had been nominated twice in the same year but did not win. He canceled himself out. But what music!!!
Great edit! Very respectful to the film. You managed to keep in all the essential parts, nicely done. Kudos. By the way that crazy story Quint told is a true story.
20:03 I believe the Shark ignored the kid, because the kid didn't move as he was too scared. If Michael (the kid) tried to swim away, the Sharks hunting instincts would've kicked in and he would've gone after him. So Michael's being in shock and just staying there probably saved his life
JAWS Was the first giant shark movie. Up until this time sharks in movies and t v shows were these dolphin sized fish so it surprised a lot of people to find out that while at 25 feet in length the Great White in Jaws was bigger than the record, but not by much.
1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm. 2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time. 🤣 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud on screen. 6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish. 7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. 8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 9. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story. 10. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting any animal attack. 11. All of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea. 12. IRL the boy that said, "He made me do it." recently became the town police chief of the town where this was filmed. 13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son. 15. The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO.
Robert Shaw was an amazing actor. Loved him in The Battle of Britain, Force 10 from Navarone, and A Man For All Seasons (where he played Henry VIII) to name but a few. And of course he was absolutely brilliant in this film Jaws. So sad that he died at the really early age of 51 from a heart attack.
16:05 Don't worry, he's safe. They actually filmed the Ben Gardner head scene in the swimming pool of the film editor as they realised after completing principal photography that they needed another jump scare.
19:54 I think the reason the Shark ignored Michael (the kid) was because Sharks usually respond to movement. If he tried to swim away, the Sharks hunting instincts would kick in, and he would go after him. Thanks to Michael being too scared to move, the Shark probably didn't consider him as prey.
Robert Shaw was quite a drinker, and it's said he was half drunk during the back and forth stories about scar's with Dreyfus scene. I was 16 and saw this on a real "Big Screen" at the Shine Theater in my home town. When the head rolled out everybody in the theater screamed!! Awesome movie, even after all these year's. So glad a new Generation can enjoy the story telling.
Two facts: The book and the movie was based on the first ever shark attack on humans at a New Jersy summer beach in 1916. The story of the USS Indianapolis is true. Not only the crew suffered from the sharks, they also from themselves and each other because of the overheat exposure from the sun and salt water poisoning. Salvation finally found them after five days being standed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
"Jaws" is so great because It starts as a Mystery Movie and becomes a Monster Movie and then becomes an Adventure Movie,a Chase Movie and a Buddy Movie. And in the end the "Bad Guy" gets it! What's not to Love about this Film?
My understanding is that the reason the shark didn’t attack Michael in the pond is because the kid froze (he was so scared). His fear saved his life since the shark didn’t “see” him as they attack based on movement.
Back in 1975 when this movie came out, after watching the movie, some people admitted they were so scared of the shark that they was too afraid to take a bath in their own house.
Fantastic reaction, I saw this in the Drive In Theater when I was 14. When the shark came up at the Chief, I jumped and hit my head on the roof of the car. Scared the crap out me. ✌
This and Jurassic Park are two of the greatest films to represent the potential of animatronics (mechanized puppets) before computer graphics became a thing.
Such an iconic shot of Brody leaning on the sinking mast of the boat. This movie will be a banger forever, looks so damn fresh with the restauration work done.
I've always wondered what financial impact "Jaws" had on beach towns around the US coast in the year the movie came out, and if that effect only lasted for one year. It's really hard to find any data like that, with such a wide dispersion and different states etc. I was 10 when the movie came out, and I remember thinking about sharks for at least the next 5 years when I'd swim in the ocean.
You are right about the shark experts.......Ron and Valerie Taylor from Australia. They are shark experts and wanted to protect them. There are some great things on You Tube about them. Look up Valerie Taylor and most will come up.
I knew a kid back in the 70s whose dad was one of the cops in the boat. The news guy talking on the beach was Peter Benchley, the author of the book. I don't fault the mayor for worrying about business during the busiest weekend of their year. I do fault him for wearing an ugly suit to the beach and NOT swimming! 🙂
George, you did a great job with this terrifying movie! I remember seeing it on the big screen and it changed the way I swam in the ocean forever. I used to swim way out to the sandbars and collect shells. Not any more!!😟 Watching your face took me right back to that theater and how I felt too. Wonderful reaction, good job!🧡
The movie was filmed on Martha's Vineyard, a Massachusetts island. I vacation there every few years. There are occasional shark sightings there, but in real life they do close the beaches. I've never heard of there being an actual shark attack there, certainly not a lethal one. The story bears a striking resemblance to the real-life Jersey shore shark attacks during the summer of 1916: The fatalities included three men in their 20s and an 11 year old boy. The boy was killed while swimming with friends in Mattawan Creek--an unlikely place to encounter a shark. One of the men was killed trying to recover the boy's body. A 14 year old boy was also attacked in the creek. He survived but lost part of his left leg. Curiously, at the time, scientists were skeptical about the attacks being caused by sharks and tried to reassure the public that there was no danger. They thought that sharks were timid, wouldn't attack a human, and didn't have a strong enough bite to seriously injure a human. The 1916 attacks forced scientists to revise their views and begin taking sharks more seriously. Unfortunately, the pendulum swung too far the other way and decades sharks were seen as man-eating monsters to be hunted and killed.
Richard Dreyfuss, who plays the shark specialist, is also a brilliant actor. You may know him from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you add it to your iconic movie list. Another one is Mr Holland's Opus. I think all the music represented over the several decades depicted in this movie will be right up your alley.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is, unknown to most, probably based on a true story. In the lore of UFO's, there is the incident that supposedly happened at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. While the incident was filmed and documented film, it was supposedly classified ant not released, but one story goes that Steven Spielberg got to see the film and the report, and that's what was used for the basis of the movie.
You got it, $$$$$$, Keep the beaches open, at what cost? I love your channel, editing, perspective and genuine reactions. A lot of fun! The newscaster on the beach is Peter Benchley, who wrote the book that Jaws came from. I'm so glad you kept Quinn's story about the Indianapolis it is a really moving scene. Robert Shaw was a brilliant writer, actor very talented man. Spielberg is truly a master director no matter the Genre. John Williams always does the best music, and the soundtrack of the shark is used in so many things, as is the line "we're going to need a bigger boat"
Nicely done again, George. There are only 3 reactors I've subscribed to for the past year because the way everyone else acts or edits just really annoys the hell out of me. Finally I've found a 4th channel worth subscribing to. Thanks for doing it right and for doing it well!
The movie came out when I was 1 year old. When I was 10 or 11 my older sisters watched it and I really wanted to see it because they said it was "a movie about fish". I fell asleep doing it. When they woke me up they said "you missed the fish". 10 years later at a party a few people watched the film. I asked "what are you looking at?" Answere "Jaws". Me: "Ah fish. such a boring movie." I'll never forget the looks I got 😂😂 (I finally saw him a few years later)
You're right, George, the slower scenes let us get to know the characters and get attached to them, so that the big scenes hit way harder. I like it when you do great movies, and if they're older and classic, you at least know they're going to be great. Thank you.
Saw this as a child. Scared me to death!!went withmy mom and her sister ,my aunt and my cousins.my mom by the time they showed Quints death she had seen enough ! She was freaking out .She had to leave the theatre for a bit !meantime I'm standing up watching in horror and all the audience is screaming ! I still can't watch that scene to this day! I guess it really must've terrified me!
Nominated for, 4 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Sound Editing Best Film Editing Best Original Score. It was a box office and critical success making $470 million dollars ($2 billion dollars today) against a $13 million dollar budget. The tagline reads: "See it, before you go swimming." "The No. 1 Terrifying Bestseller Becomes The No 1 Terrifying Motion Picture."
Great reaction as always, George!! This movie is a favorite of mine. I saw it in the theater when I was 14. scared the bejesus out of me! I've lived in Florida since I was about 7 years old and still live very close to the beaches. I haven't gone in the ocean above my knees since I saw this!!! Fun fact: when Brody says "You're going to need a bigger boat", it was improvised by Roy Scheider and kept in the movie.
Hi there, George, Jaws is a classic film, a real blockbuster, the special effects were amazing and I absolutely love the music! So much tension and so much suspense and although it's 47 years old, it still packs a punch and how!! Steven Spielberg, such a brilliant director and the actors were fantastic, Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw. Loved your reaction George, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. On a lighter side, it would be great if you could react to a film I mentioned before, The Blues Brothers (1980), I think you'd love it and the music is great, it's directed by John Landis. Take care now and all the best. 😊👍
Great reaction! Saw this at the drive-in the summer of '75 when I was 7. Spent the next 2 or 3 summers in the shallows on our trips to Lake Huron because my brothers told me sharks could swim up the St. Lawrence.
I subscribe to many reactors... you're my favourite. Keep those reactions coming, because I enjoy your thoughtful, empathetic, and sensitive reactions. I have shiploads of suggestions for films I think you'd love.
Sad fact: the actress playing Alex Kitner's mother recently died of Covid. Fun fact: The news man on the beach is actually Peter Benchley the guy who wrote JAWS. JAWS avoided the kid because he's the star's son.
Thanks for reviewing this movie! The back story to this movie is fascinating. The shark prop was always breaking down, so they had to limit its use in the film. This was a stroke of luck because it up the suspense as not seeing the monster, but knowing it's there is more psychologically frightening than seeing the monster. Classic movie. The story Quint tells about the USS Indianapolis was a true story and worth checking out.
at that time knowledge about sharks was not as good as it is today so some things are not that realistic but of the 10,000,000 shark movies, this one is the best. there are a few that are very good in their own way, the shallows for example
Jaws is one of my all time faves, loved your reaction. True Lies should be next if you havent already. A great mix of action and comedy with Arnie, directed by James Cameron.
If you're a fan of comedy, then Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray are an excellent comedic duo in the film 'What About Bob' from 1991 that I've personally watched many times over.
Another Stephen Spielberg gem with Richard Dreyfus is of course Close Encounters of the Third Kind as mentioned in the comments. A very good quality movie that I’m sure you will like.
Great reaction, like always. If I could only pick 3 movies I would like to see you react to, this would be my list: 1st Das Boot, 2nd Seven Samurai and 3rd Heat.
George, you are a pretty stoic guy. I've seen the movie at least 4 times and I still jumped more than you at 15:50 (and I knew what was going to happen)
It's probably elsewhere in the comments but Robert Shaw (Quint) had another great role as Doyle Lonnegan in "The Sting", which is another awesome movie.
I think you would really like Fargo or Point Break -- If you are wanting a fun one Richard Dreyfuss is hilarious in What About Bob? -- So many great movies out there
@@smokeyverton7981 I also saw Jaws 3-D in the theatre but many years later. It’s a hot mess of a film but a lot of fun nonetheless. Especially in the theatre in 3-D
The reason why the avoided the little boy because he was not splashing around he was not moving as it said earlier in the film the shark is attracted to all the splashing of the water

The USS Indianapolis story is a true story. Still one of my favourite films ,just having these 3 actors together on a boat is mesmerising.
Yes, but Quint got the date wrong and the distress signal. The cruiser sank on July 30, and not on July 29 as Quint said, and the cruiser sent a distress signal three times, but they were ignored at the stations, considering it a trap for the Japanese.
This movie was Steven Spielberg's first block buster hit 1975 set all types of box office records at the time. One of my favorites
If you listen close, when Brody fires the shot that kills Bruce, you can tell it was the last shot due to the clip ejecting from the m1 garand
At the summer of the theaters’ release of Jaws, people were really affraid of entering in the water to swim, even in the rivers and lakes! 😂😂😂
Richard Dreyfuss is a very good actor in this movie. He is the marine biologist that helps track down the shark. You may know him after this movie in one of the best science fiction movies of the 70s called Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. He has made dozens of movies since this one.
Old movies were about great stories, characters, scripts, dialogue, real practical effects and actors. So much talent and so much work.
Dam right
And actors nowadays are models that look like they came out of g q magazine. They just want good looking people now. Not average lookingpeople
And Benchley became a shark conservationist after the backlash against sharks post Jaws...as he felt responsible.
Cage scenes were shot off the coast of Australia, by Ron and Valerie Taylor. and the reporter on the beach was Peter Benchley, the writer of the book

Another great movie starring Robert Shaw (Quint) is THE STING (1973). Also stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford
Yes! Watch this movie!
20:03 I believe the Shark ignored the kid, because the kid didn't move as he was too scared. If Michael (the kid) tried to swim away, the Sharks hunting instincts would've kicked in and he would've gone after him. So Michael's being in shock and just staying there probably saved his life
I would argue the Michael must have been treading water (moving) or else he would have sunk without trace!
Robert Shaw, legendary English actor!

Robert Shaw was fantastic. Between this and his turn as Grant in From Russia with Love, he is an absolute screen legend.

Movies can have an impact on your life. I'm 71 years old and saw this the week it premiered .... I have never gone in Ocean since!
16:05 Don't worry, he's safe. They actually filmed the Ben Gardner head scene in the swimming pool of the film editor as they realised after completing principal photography that they needed another jump scare.

Best job on Jaws I have seen. I have yet to see anyone react to "ORCA" after seeing Jaws. I guess Jaws was enough for most people lol.
If you saw this when you were 10 years old like I did, you’d still be afraid to be far out in a lake all alone. Shark PTSD from a movie.
My understanding is that the reason the shark didn’t attack Michael in the pond is because the kid froze (he was so scared). His fear saved his life since the shark didn’t “see” him as they attack based on movement.
Holy Hell George! I did NOT expect you to watch this! I’m glad you did. Good to see you live again.
Back in 1975 when this movie came out, after watching the movie, some people admitted they were so scared of the shark that they was too afraid to take a bath in their own house.
Really enjoy your channel and your reactions!

One of the best jump scares everl. Great movie

Hi from Arizona
The USS Indianapolis incident really happened.
Nicely done again, George. There are only 3 reactors I've subscribed to for the past year because the way everyone else acts or edits just really annoys the hell out of me. Finally I've found a 4th channel worth subscribing to. Thanks for doing it right and for doing it well!
I love your reactions here and your music channel. So sincere and authentic.
I have a *JAWS* poster on my wall for a reason! This film still works, decades later 🦈🎬🍿
That movie is the one that coined the term blockbuster; people line up around the block to see this
The movie came out when I was 1 year old. When I was 10 or 11 my older sisters watched it and I really wanted to see it because they said it was "a movie about fish". I fell asleep doing it. When they woke me up they said "you missed the fish".

She was freaking out .She had to leave the theatre for a bit !meantime I'm standing up watching in horror and all the audience is screaming ! I still can't watch that scene to this day! I guess it really must've terrified me!
There actor who played Quint apparently had a drinking problem and his co stars said he was drunk in all Of his scenes:
Wow as soon as I saw CloseUp and ”Jaws” I dropped everything, lol. Thank you for reacting to this! And very good as usual, You’re the best.
It makes me happy that you’re reacting to this movie🎉
The cut open stomach of the Tiger shark would stink but the digestive hydrochloric acid would also hard on the nose.
Fun Fact: The TV Interviewer you see in the 4th of July Beach party is played by the author of Jaws Peter Benchley.
Nominated for, 4 Oscars including Best Picture but won for
Best Sound Editing
Best Film Editing
Best Original Score.
It was a box office and critical success making $470 million dollars ($2 billion dollars today) against a $13 million dollar budget.
The tagline reads: "See it, before you go swimming."
"The No. 1 Terrifying Bestseller Becomes The No 1 Terrifying Motion Picture."
I read the Book before seeing the movie .... This is one instance where the Film is better than the Book!
I can’t wait to watch this!!! Best movie ever!!!
The “Kentucky Fried Movie” is the funniest movie ever made.
Jaws is brilliant btw.
"Stir of echoes" is a good one, i think you would like, kevin bacon is in it. 1999
excellently edited!
I'm glad I didn't see this when it came out because it no doubt would have put me off enjoying the water while I was living on the coast at that time.
Lawrence.
Amazing reaction again. Thank you for doing these movies
You asked why the shark didn't eat Brody's kid. Most likely because he was still. Sharks are attracted to movement.
Back so soon? Awesome!
best movie shark ever
13:54 Check the number. Spielberg was desperate to direct a Bond film but Cubby Broccoli refused so he had the licence plate made as a dig.
The WWII story was correct and a true story. Look up the USS Indianapolis for the story!
In the summer they come close to the beaches In NJ.
Better than the book
Ugh the book. That whole bit with Brody's wife.
17:04 The books author Peter Benchley
I think you would really like Fargo or Point Break -- If you are wanting a fun one Richard Dreyfuss is hilarious in What About Bob? -- So many great movies out there
Yes! HEAT 1995
I HIGHLY recommend Life As A House (2001) No one else will likely recommend it, but you really won't regret it.
If you want you can also watch "The Meg" from 2018. It's about a giant shark. In contrast, the great white shark is just a small fish.
See Duel Steven Spielberg
Notice the actors had very minimal makeup and hair was not in perfect place. They looked like everyday people. You don't see that today at all!
Jaws 2 is excellent as well. Not as good as this one but MUCH better than Jaws 3 & 4
I saw JAWS 3-D in the theater. Those 3D glasses were so lame, but at the time pretty cool
@@smokeyverton7981 I also saw Jaws 3-D in the theatre but many years later. It’s a hot mess of a film but a lot of fun nonetheless. Especially in the theatre in 3-D
Great reaction to the exorcist, it scared me too. I'm glad you're reacting to Jaws, I hope you share both of these great movies with your brother.
The reason why the avoided the little boy because he was not splashing around he was not moving as it said earlier in the film the shark is attracted to all the splashing of the water
Greetings from Finland man!!! You should definitely check out 47 meters down and 47 meters down uncageced!!! "I'll be back" 😎
Next movie I vote " Planet of the Apes " 1968 with Charleston Heston ✌
