I think the biggest similarities between soundcloud rap and punk rock (regardless of weather you think soundcloud rap is the new punk or not) is that both genres rose up from disaffected youth and took the mainstream by storm, stuck around for about two too three years, and then died out in its purest form leaving a generation with an entirely new conception and sound for what music can be. Things in the future will likely still be called soundcloud rap, just as they used to be called punk, when in reality they are more accurately described as rap/rock that wouldn't be able to exist if it weren't for those early pioneers of soundcloud rap/punk rock.
Same as most genres bro even rock, most creative people are working class n therefore rebellious. N often show that through music which isnt taken well by the mystery men🌐
i would disagree. eventough the people who made both genres came from a similar type of background the acctual music is a lot different. Punk rock constisted (mostly) of a drummer, a bass and a singer. the rap is just a singer with a loud instumental that doenst even have a bass in there. also punk also consisted of the "no future" idea which rappers dont have at all
I agree with Soundcloud rap wave of 2010's being a punk movement. Punk rock is a genre, though, and I don't think that brand of rap can be compared to punk rock in any way but its origin and the people surrounding it rather than the music itself.
Jesus yall fucked this up. What about Denzel Curry, SGP, & Raider Klan? The scene's existed for more than 20 minutes. Also, saying XXX influenced $uicideboy$ & Ronny J is fucking disrespectful and flat out wrong. It's the other way around, and honestly, all this gritty lo-fi rap is an offshoot of Memphis horrorcore from the 90s anyway. If you wanna really take a look at the people who started it, lookup old stuff from Three 6 Mafia, Tommy Wright III, Skimask Troopaz, and Lil Noid.
I agree with the punk relation, but it’s not punk rock. Its a punk phase of hip-hop, whose mainstream is glossy and already political in nature. These artists, stretching farther than south Florida, are dirty, rude, and controversial, similar to the Sex Pistols and the Dolls. But this new movement is punk in its meaninglessness. The way that the music is about the sound, bumping bass, and rude lyrics avoiding the politics produced by Kendrick, j cole, kanye, and other contemporary artists.
it's closest to punk we'll get to in 2017 tbh with one huge difference, punk was never really about flashing ur newfound wealth no matter how poor u used to be
Stephone the jerk Hip hop was built upon funk, jazz, soul, and disco samples back in the 1970s with heavy Jamaican influences. It's been mixing with rock, metal, electro-funk and house since the 80's, this is nothing new.
I guess anti-establishment is now considered flexing and flaunting their wealth. I don't have a problem with either genre, but this is so wrong. South Florida rap is mainstream, you hear these songs on the radio and pretty much everyone enjoys them. Punk is counter culture, it's mainstream to an extent, but how many modern rap albums have had their records banned in stores or be the subject of heavy political debate?
Julian Green ok, and that's also a main problem with this video. There is nothing truly shocking in music currently. And while nothing has been outright banned, you have to have seen at least a petition to get a film or a video game banned.
brolindres sure, but art isn’t made in a vacuum. Almost every taboo has been broken already; what’s left to “shock” people with? Yeah I’ve occasionally seen petitions against films, video games and music, but they were roundly ignored. None of them became a flashpoint for political discussion.
Julian Green I agree, I also feel like hip hop needs it own identity and companies like genius need to stop labeling it as "the new ____". Imagine if every piece of art was compared to something great instantly, it would never be able to stand on its own.
Denzel Curry is from South Florida and really fits the description you're giving Punk. He's very counter culture and makes his dislike of American governmental methods known while repping the philosophies of his area. His most recent project, the 13 EP, is the best example of all this in my opinion but we'll see if he continues on that route. I don't listen to Punk so I really don't know if Curry fits the bill of "Punk Rap" but be sure to let me know what you think of him in reference to that
I can see the resemblance to punk. The shit lyrics, unorthodox lazy flows, pure recklessness, drugs and they're young. Just like the Sex Pistols and it's contemporaries. Shit lyrics, shit catchy riffs, horrible musicianship, and attitude. Every "rockstar" back in the day gave them shit for not sounding/playing good. Just like today, old rappers shitting on these young dudes. Sounds like punk to me. Hip hop/rap going through a punk and pop phase. I'm more of a rock/metal guy so I may not like it, but respect the music "existing." And there's plenty of young folk who actually like it.
Lil pump dropped out of hip hop to save harvard. For real, he's about to make top 10 on billboard. just what the fuck america. And to be frankly honest, I have no fucking idea why Gucci Gang charted and is doing so well when it's basically the same shit as his other songs which didn't chart.

When people compare Tupac to Lil Pump it pisses me off for two reasons 1. Tupac is a legendary rapper that has been being played for years, lil Pump will only last maybe a few more years. Also, Tupac is taking about real stuff and problems in the hood. Lil Pump promotes that bad stuff, which can put big problems in the U.S. 2. Them two have different styles, Tupac is like a poet, he is very lyrical. Lil Pump is a hype and... I guess you could say.. repeater? Idk how to say it but he repeats the same stuff *OVER AND OVER*
SoundCloud and trap rap is basically the hair metal of the 2010s. Hopefully, we get our own Nirvana and grunge era to wash out the mainstream, mundane garbage polluting the airwaves.
Yeah, there’s some similarities but I think the whole “punk” label as applied to most of these Florida SoundCloud rappers is really shallow. These new rappers have the DIY aesthetic and the apparent eagerness to violate or exaggerate many of the conventions of their genre that punk rockers had. But beyond that, I think the comparison starts to fall apart.
Im a rapper from Miami FL. I graduated from miami high by calle 8. Its one of the first high schools in the US. Not some yuppie rich area suburb out skirts of fl. Before I was a rapper I was a member of a punk band called Das Phobia. This statement is so untrue. The punk movement isnt about aimless ignorance. A ton of punk bands were spreading awareness and knowledge in their songs like NOFX and others.. Rappers have been already doing this style under the category of rap... why is it now being made into punk? Its offensive. Rap is rap, punk is punk. When I started making rap music I didnt label my music rap punk because i was a punk.. it was rap. You can pay homage to another genre it doesnt make you that genre unless you have all those elements. I would even say an electro punk band would pass with all machines... bit definately not this.. this is so far off from it Blah this is just too much of a bold statement. They are part of rap. These new rappers just dont have a name to their EMO ass sub-genre yet so they are tryna put them in a box labelled Punk Rap but they are so far off. Obviously these People at Genius have never heard "Death Grips"
You seem so certain and assured here yet you think Rap is a genre. In that case I guess Drum is a genre too alongside Sing. It’s that poor knowledge and assignment of genres to these rappers that undermined your argument really
They have similarities in that they stray from mainstream. The difference is that punk is anti-estabilisment and rebellious with a clear message to it, while Soundcloud really isn't rebellious. It's just alternative rap.
They may be similar, but educate yourself. Two different subcultures, Two different sounds, two different song structurally, and different concepts. Controversy and Shock and Distortion and anti establishment do not DEFINE punk. Please take this down.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
It's called the underground scene. Punk rock was the same thing back in the 60's-80's. It doesn't mean that the South Florida Rap scene is "Punk". Punk's main parts were about society, politics, insecurity, and social alienation/anxiety. And although you can say that about XXXTentacion's music, it's definitely not the case with everyone else. The similarities are mainly in the live show. That's about it. The underground aesthetic.
25 year old punk rocker here. I like the direction the soundcloud shit is going and I don't even like rap or whatever, it just needs to go all the way and get really political and intelligent and experimental then I'd respect it totally. btw RIP X & Peep

Even tho I don't like lil pump and a lot of contemporary SoundCloud rap, Hip-hop has always had elements of punk like having an anti authorian attitude, an intentionally garish aesthetic to piss off snobs, breaking the rules and conventions of music, they often perform music regardless of technical skill and sometimes that becomes part of appeal, kinda like how Johnny Rotten's voice cracks on some tracks but it actually compliments the song's angry relibellious tone, I may not like this new wave currently but I believe it has potential to grow and if it was just a lil more focused, it could do great things
waterzofnazareth rich old jews using the spastic outbursts of mentally ill teenagers to cash in on edgy kids is pretty much the definition of punk, yeah
Lil Pump shouldn't even be compared to punk, his music doesnt, and I repeat, DOESNT SAY SHIT. POINT BLANK PERIOD. Also, if you're gonna talk about the sound, don't bring up the cover boy of the sound if they have nothing to do with the production besides spewing random shit on the mic.
I would consider Cloud Rap to be more akin to the 80s DIY Hardcore scene in places like DC with groups like Bad Brains and Minor Threat, whereas I’d consider breakout punk bands like the Ramones and The Clash more comparable to the more mainstream wave of trap music in the past 10 yrs.
NO. there. Its’s just a new wave of rap music and don’t come at me saying its the culture of south Florida rap that’s inspired. because most of the rappers out here are at least 25 years old and are mostly inspired by the 90’s grudge scene and the early to mid 2000’s rap era that fuels their lyrics. Nothing else
It's disrespectful not mentioning Denzel Curry or SpaceGhostPurp in this video they're the pioneers to this new punk rap from Florida

Because you get these people stuck in the past who thinks "rap" has to be done a certain way.
avp927 if people miss it so much, why isn't it the most popular genre of music anymore? 🤔
Because like every other genres of music it has sub genres. Punk rap is a good name for this type of rap.

flexing millions on jewerly and clothes with trash lyrics with 0 impact on society is punk yeah right bro
waterzofnazareth rich old jews using the spastic outbursts of mentally ill teenagers to cash in on edgy kids is pretty much the definition of punk, yeah
I agree
Do yall not watch the video
Dope segment.
Daaaamn Ski went and sampled fucking Spongebob's Bubble Bowl preformace on that Death Is Long track!! Shit is dope as fuck!
Don't forget dat *Chance the Rapper* saved soundcloud ass

Don’t mix rap with punk
*Ramones => Green Day =>* -XXXTenacion-
However, I still fuck with his music.
This is not fucking punk no rebellion the closest new trap artist to punk is nascar aloe
Lil pump can’t be considered music
RIP X
punk is political
I would consider Cloud Rap to be more akin to the 80s DIY Hardcore scene in places like DC with groups like Bad Brains and Minor Threat, whereas I’d consider breakout punk bands like the Ramones and The Clash more comparable to the more mainstream wave of trap music in the past 10 yrs.
R.I.P LEGEND
XXXTENTATION
You have to be good to be considered a legend first
You can't compare totally different even the way punks party
Punk rock = Anti-corporate
South Florida rap = Showing off clothes and drugs
South Florida rap is an insult to music as a whole
Rock Rawk mane is given it too ya not given a fuck nigyah!
NO.
