    On "My Car Story" we're in Chicago on 2-19-17.
    We're taking a ride in a 1969 Dodge Daytona Charger in Spring Green Paint with a Black Tail that is amazingly original. The car features the original 426 Hemi engine.
    We’re talking with the Owner Tom Lembeck who shares there are only about 39 1969 Dodge Daytona’s that came with a Hemi engine still around.
    What a TREAT!
    ENJOY!

      I liked it when he lifted the hood and the HEMI was making all that glorious mechanical racket!!! Ha-ha-ha. Now-a-days, people would take their car to the dealership and say--"It's making funny noises--there's got to be something wrong with it." :- )

    After being bored and scrolling through the comments and corresponding threads on this video, I've come to the conclusion that many are not aware of its Nascar heritage, low manufacturer numbers and records it broke for its time, and not mention breakthrough discoveries in automotive aerodynamics. Some people are even attempting to compare it to Hondas. These cars along with their rarity are pieces of history.

      Lou Costabile
      I'm a fan of the American automobile history. Parents taught me alot and made sure to show me the importance. I got a little 71 Monte Carlo that I built and attempted to recreate the infamous Chevy DZ-302. 327 block, 283 crank, 2.02-1.60 camel hump heads, .288-.298 cam etc. Mostly stock components, minus springs, retainers ignition, etc. Finally completed 1 years ago, TH400 trans, 12 bolt 3.73 with spool, put down 345hp& 356tq at the tires and spins to a fun loving 8,200rpm. Just basic, high revving fun car to drive. Can't wait to take it the track this year. May not be as fast as some cars, but that feeling of pride in ownership and actually building it yourself is by far better.

      The car was built to win Nascar which it did but they had to build and sell 500 to compete, that's why it has a huge wing and long front end.

      Hi Bee Lover, I've met many people interested in so many different cars, that I've come to realize, there really are no garbage cars, because someone somewhere can find satisfaction in the vehicle they have or enjoy. Also, I believe cars also get better looking with age, so cars people might not be interested in today, might become collectible or more valuable over time based on condition. Hope that helped answer your question. Thank you for asking, Lou

    • @521CID
      @521CID 8 років тому +5

      truth4wtc7 Try Priceless, real car people don't put prices on there cars, you go strictly by the way the car makes you feel. The way it makes you feel is worth more then money. I have a 2002 Z28, I love this car, makes me feel great, love everything about it, built, but garage kept in the winter, and rain, daily driver other then that, these cars aren't worth much at all, but to me, 50 grand wouldn't take this car off of me. car makes me feel better then the money, Priceless. if you talk about what a cars worth, your not a car person.

    • @521CID
      @521CID 8 років тому +3

      truth4wtc7 This Daytona isn't worth anymore money then what it was baught for new, honestly, but to the person that loves it, emotionally, sentimentally, the feeling that he or she gets looking at it, touching it, driving it. dreaming of it, that feeling is worth more then a million bucks. priceless

    • @RoscoRide
      @RoscoRide 8 років тому +3

      LS6 Z28 That's a dumb thing to say, when you sell your car just take $1000 bucks for it then...to say talking about The price of a car doesn't make you a car person is stupid. David spade paid $900,000. 2 years ago for a Hemi Daytona.

      I'm sure it's the same as when I used to do amateur racing with an old BMW. Some of the guys with really nice track cars would trailer them to the track in their business trailer. The whole point of their side business was to support their "money-hole" hobby. And I don't mean that in a bad way. It just is what it is. Very addictive and very very expensive.

    Nothing could best the Scat Pak. In 1975 my dad came home one day and my 17 yo brother and I ( I was 15 ) would trickle out different doors to greet him a lot of days
    My brother was a junior in Highschool I believe and I knew he was going to buy my brother a car, used, soon after school started. This day I looked out the upstairs window and was floored. SUPER BEE. Crazy, I blasted down stairs as my brother just walked out and we greeted Dad. I can still see that grey roof. We spent all night with his new (used) car. Aw man I loved that car.
    383 Magnum beast ENGINE ,
    PISTOL GRIP. A customer of my dad owed him money; dad took this as a payout. We dogged out in so many street races GM and Ford's, including a Boss 302!!!! Flash forward: about 2 years later my brother was going to go off to college the next year and promised giving the car to me; it didn't happen .
    NY eve I think 1976 he and a buddy went out LATE TO A PARTY ( my mom told him not to go, he convinced her: the car was demolished by a drunk driver in a broadside crash. It knocked his buddy from the front passenger seat into the driver seat into my brother.
    I was glad no one was hurt, but
    devasted I lost my promised car.
    Scat Pak and Dodge Bros rule and Shelby's are slow garbage 😜.
    1976 or so

      Thanks Lou. Yeah it was the 1970's and muscle cars were dirt cheap. It wasnt a Hemi, 440 or a 383 it was a 340 Cuda but it was fun just the same and had plenty of power for a teenager who drove it like he stole it LOL. I had a chance to buy a used purple Hemi Cuda in excellent condition for 6000 but could not afford it at as a teen lol. I also remember a winged Daytona for sale but believe it or not nobody wanted the winged cars back then. It was to much and over the top for everyday driving. The dealers could not sell them as I remember. Still kicking myself for not jumping on that car.

    I remember in May 1969,riding shotgun on the way home from Airport Motors,Queens,N.Y. We were on Utica Ave.,near the corner of Farragut Rd. in Brooklyn,N.Y. Brand new Hemi Roadrunner,torqueflite,shifter on the column,4.10 gears and a black bench seat. My buddy,Randy, nails the gas at approximately 25 mph to pass a bus. The transmission downshifts and catches 1st. The engine positively ROARS as it lights up the rear tires.The car changes lanes by itself. Randy lets go of the gas and screams the loudest "HOLY SHIT" I had ever heard. Two young guys. The driver is 19 the passenger (me),16, were just introduced to the world of the Street Hemi.......Life was never the same.

    A "wing car" on the North side of Chicago? Indeed a rare sight-& the exhaust note alone would scare Hondas, nevermind the mild burnout. And I understand why he didn't hit it as hard as he could have: you do a hard burnout, maybe you break something, then you get a jabroni in a tow truck that doesn't know how to properly secure the car...need I say more?

    • @ltr4300
      @ltr4300 7 років тому +5

      Those were a bit cammy at idle and it seems to be loading up a bit, not uncommon for a big motor that doesn't get out and stretch its legs daily. If he just booped it, there's a 50/50 chance it would just load and die/bog. Massive engines like that took maybe 15 minutes or so to be fully warmed up, and the carbs were built for performance, not driveability. They were a pain in the ass when new, even. Don't know your age, but many people now don't understand the concept of not being able to just go apeshit bonkers with it 15 seconds after turning the key cold start. There was a process of warming up and clearing out back in the day...I'm sure if he got it out on an open road and did a 75 mph run for a couple of miles, it would be clear and ready for any kinda showing off. Plus I'm sure he doesn't really wanna utterly destroy his period-correct and not too cheap skinnies showing off for every dillhole with a camera that says "let's do some burnouts!"...and finally...those old monster block motors had a lotta reciprocating weight. That meant when you did a little burnout in a short area there was sometimes the effect that as you let off the gas, the now sticky tires would hook up, and the car would lunge unexpectedly, even as the motor was spooling down. So you could easily suddenly torpedo some twonk in a minivan that suddenly decided to cross your path. Having foot on brake keeps that at least somewhat under wraps.

    I remember when a lot of hemi owners pulled the engines out when the valve springs made the cams wipe out their lobes. Switched to 440s.

    Referring to the ‘69 Dodge Charger Daytona, the owner said, “Supposedly they [Dodge] only built 73 of these cars”...
    In fact, Dodge built 501 of these for sale to the general public thru their dealership network in order to meet the minimum 500 production number required by NASCAR before the make could enter and race it in the series. 501 is a few more than 73 but still very rare compared to the average production numbers of more popular (or shall we say more ‘normal’) automobile models that number in the tens of thousands.
    Great vid post of a very unique, very historic automobile, Lou! I personally rank it up there in the #2 position of the TOP THREE most iconic musclecars ever built by the 4 major automobile makers (General Motors, Chrysler, Lincoln, and American Motors) and sold to the general public thru their respective dealerships...
    #1 musclecar:
    ‘70/‘71 PLYMOUTH HEMICUDA
    #2 musclecar:
    ‘69 DODGE CHARGER DAYTONA
    #3 musclecar:
    ‘70 PLYMOUTH ROADRUNNER SUPERBIRD

      Got it. Thanks for the clarification Lou. I can’t recall if I’d ever heard how many of the Hemi Daytona’s were produced. I would have guessed much less than 73. I would have thought maybe 10 to 30 or so. No doubt the owner knows more about the Daytona’s than I do as he owns one and has surely looked at all the production figures on it. That beast is an AMERICAN LEGEND ...an ICON!

    Special Day Today! Couple of teens in their Charger LOL. The funny thing is Lou I was in my mid 20's and scrubbed the tires of my 4spd 5.0 Mustang with my friend and the cop pulls me over and says kind of old for this aren't you? And I was in my 20's! Here you guys are in a '69 Hemi Charger little older than 20's lol.

    This is from a couple of years ago but still stoked to see it. Pretty cool,,,a month or so ago, the question was asked here, SuperBird or Daytona. My pick was the Daytona, not only because i once had a '69 Charger but because i had a photo layout from Hot Rod magazine of a blue one taped to the front door of my apartment i'd see everyday before driving to work. It Was THIS Car!! ok, color was changed but,,,too crazy!!!

    I was 10 yrs old and the sales guys at my local Dodge dealer would let me sit in the orange one they had on the lot, as long as I made loud engine noises as I went through the gears with the pistol grip 4 speed. One day it was gone and I had to make those entertaining noises in a 340 Dart. I'm making those noises right now.
