On "My Car Story" we're at the Carlisle Events in Carlisle PA on 7-13-23.
We're looking at a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona in Orange Paint. The car comes with the 426 CI V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Bob Jennings. Bob’s had this car since 2019. Bob loves the “Wing Cars” and this one is a “Benchmark” because of this cars originality and has less than 40,000 original miles. He shares how this car was put away for many years and some of the things he had to do to get this one running again.
Bob Jennings shares a video of the differences of the 1969 Dodge Daytona and 1970 Plymouth Superbird in this video • Differences between a ...

Hi Richard, I agree, Bob is the right Guy for this car. I feel very fortunate to get to ride in some great cars, and it's a pleasure to share what I find with you lucky Bastard :-) Lou
can`t mistake that starter sound! What a beauty!
You're right :-)
The license plate says it all. No matter the year or the miles, a Wing Car is always special. It's nice to see this one is in Mr. Jennings' capable and patient hands. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, "a Wing Car is always special." I agree. My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome, Lou
Small correction, the Daytona was sold new by Race Motor Sales in Marion Ohio. My father owned the dealership and he let me drive the car one time while it was in inventory. I was 17 years old.

@tomrace6518.. Hi Tom, hey what was the top speed of these 426 Hemi powered Daytona Charger cars? Was it anything close to the race version of these cars?
@@loucostabile.. Hi Lou, what was the top speed of these 426 Hemi powered Daytona Chargers? Was it anything close to the 200mph race version?
Great dad to save such an ìconic survivor classic hemi Daytona for the kids. Fantastic story. Thanks Lou, very enjoyable feature today, got the birds singing too!
Happy to share this " ìconic survivor classic hemi Daytona" with you :-) You're welcome Bruce H.
The Wing cars are always super special. A real icon. And I still find it interesting that they did not sell well at the time.
Thanks for letting us see this classic Lou!
Hi Jeff, "The Wing cars are always super special. A real icon." I agree. My pleasure sharing this classic with you. You're welcome, Lou
There were a few of those around when I was a kid. They always drew a crowd at the local drive-in. We had a Daytona with the 440 back in the early 80's. Muscle cars weren't much in demand at that time. It didn't bring much money. That's one I wish we had kept in a barn.
Hi JWelchon, Happy to read this car brings back memories of cars you remember :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
The perfect guest!! Bob is so friendly and knowledgeable, and calls Lou by name. And the car is the Benchmark for Lou's videos. How ya' gonna' top this? Oh that's right, ya' always do!! Ü
Hi woofer devlin, "The perfect guest!! Bob is so friendly and knowledgeable, and calls Lou by name. And the car is the Benchmark for Lou's videos." ...he's a wonderful person, and it's a wonderful thing to be sharing this car :-) My pleasure sharing with you. Stay tuned and we'll see what I can come up with, Lou

A subscription to a quality channel like this is a pleasure.
I was 12 when I saw my first winged car in 1970- a Superbird in Lime Light green. I almost jumped out of the back seat and screamed 'Dad, a Superbird!! We gotta buy one of those!!!'. My mom said 'Norman, he's right. I could hang the laundry on that thing and get the clothes dry in about two minutes!'. She had me hopeful for about 2 seconds until the reality of living in a non-car enthusiast family hit home once again. The HOLY GRL licence plate just about sums it up. Awesome video Lou!!!
Hi Tom (and JudyAnn), Ahhh the Lime Light Green Superbird that you almost jumped out of the back seat for....yep, you're a Car Guy :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
Can't say it's an oldie but a goodie but it's a nice old remnant.
Thanks for viewing and sharing.
my God !!! What a magnificent, splendid Mopar, congratulations to the owner and the video.
A hug here from the city of Curitiba, Brazil.
High praise. A hug back to you from USA.
I remember seeing a baby blue superbird on Park ave. up here in montreal around 1975, it blew my mind. This Daytona took me back to the seventies. Great stuff, keep them coming, appreciate your channel and your efforts.

Love the survivor cars of any make, Lou! Keep up the good work
Happy to share this Survivor with you Dan :-)
I got to the office 20 minutes early today and checked YT to see if there was anything of interest before work starts. God bless you Lou, there you were with a Hemi Daytona! On Friday even! MOPAR or no car Lou and have a great day!
Hi Ken InHB, Blessings received. God bless you too. HAPPY FRIDAY! Lou
Wow, what a special Hemi survivor car! Love those Dodge Charger Daytona & Plymouth Superbird Wing Cars! Thanks once more Lou featuring yet another excellent Mopar video!
My pleasure sharing this "excellent Mopar" with you. You're welcome JackFlemingFan.
I glad to see he didn't restore with it in the shape it was in already I surprised to see it didn't have a 4speed rather than a automatic
Hi Larry, Happy to read you like this one just as it is :-) Lou
I must say, I've seen a lot of muscle cars in my life, but I've never seen a Dodge Daytona or a Plymouth Superbird in the flesh. This is a great original survivor..Thnx Lou!
Hope you see one or two soon! You're welcome David!
Beautiful car Lou. Always like seeing the unrestored original cars. Especially when it's a Hemi Daytona Charger. I had a friend whose dad almost bought one brand new, but went with the regular Charger R/T instead, he said that the Daytona was like 1,000 dollars more than the Charger R/T and he just couldn't afford it.
Hi PlymouthDuster225, Happy to share this car in this condition with you :-) Glad to read this car brings back memories of your Friends Dads almost bought car. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Very cool. I have a 1968 Dodge D100 Custom that has the same wheel covers, only difference is that the centers on mine are red and they are original to the truck. Cool Mopar stuff.
Hi Hobiemarty, Happy to read "Very cool" :-) That is good to know that you have those hard to find wheel covers too. Lou
Very cool presentation Lou - thanks for sharing Bob & his (wonderfully unique) Daytona with us. Cheers!
Happy to read you enjoy this presentation Raynus 1 :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome. Cheers!
What an awesome treat Lou. Both you and Bob are happy sorts in this video which makes this really fun to watch. Thanks, thanks so much for the ride!!!
Hi Mark V. and Victoria Macham, Happy to share this "treat" with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
Great looking car Lou. Every time you feature a Hemi it gives me a kick up the pants to get the engine rebuild progressed further on mine 🤪
Hi lyonheart84 exotic fruit growing, Getter done!
Wow! Wow! and Wow! What else needs to be said!?! Thanks, Lou.
Wow! x 3 = Winner :-) You're welcome Fred and Debra MacDonald.
I remember when the Daytonas and Superbirds came out as a 10 yr old kid. It was like they were from another planet. We were a Mopar family and I was a car nut, so Daytonas and Superbirds made me especially proud when they dominated NASCAR. My Chevy and Ford buddies had to eat their words. That one is a rare beast, for sure! I think it is in capable hands and will be cared for with love...and patients. Thanks for the memories, Lou.
Hi architype one, "It was like they were from another planet." You're right, and well said. Happy to share this "Rare Beast" with you. You're welcome, and glad this one brings good memories, Lou
Great job Lou!
Bob is the nicest guy I spoke with him many times so down to earth! Lou you could spend a lot of time in bobs garage
Hi Michael, Happy to read you enjoy this video. I hope I'm spending more time with Bob :-) Lou
What a spectacular 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona we have here as a reference! Its stylized and aerodynamic wedge-shaped beak, which further lengthens its large front, along with its large tail spoiler, are quite reminiscent of the contemporary Plymouth Superbird. For having been stored for about 40 years, it is in good condition; even with its original stickers! Well, although it took effort to make it work again due to its unused state. By the way, thanks to the link you left, I went to see the video where Mr. Jennings explains the differences between a Superbird and a Daytona... Great car and video, Lou!
Hi Jaime, Happy to read this car is "spectacular" :-) Glad to read you saw the difference between the two video too. Thought you'd like that. Here is one more video I think you'll enjoy, Lou ua-cam.com/video/XemBZn5aQUk/v-deo.html
My dad bought a new 68 charger base model, had the exact same hubcaps.
Hi Andy, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many cars on this Channel you enjoy! Please Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this UA-cam Channel, Lou
Thanks for showing this rare and beautiful car guys.
You're welcome Donald the truth seeker.
Great story 👍👍
Happy to read you enjoy this story :-)
Very Cool Survivor ! Thanks for posting Lou !
Hi Rudy, Happy to read this one is "Very Cool" :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome, Lou
What a delightful caretaker of a special wingcar... and refreshing to see a car that isn't an over-restored, trailer queen.
Happy to read you enjoy this Caretaker and his car :-)
Bob is one of the best, love seeing him down at shows! Checked this car out a number of times now, always impressed.
Hi Kinleys Classics, "Bob is one of the best" I agree. You're right, his cars are impressive, Lou
Very cool Daytona - amazing that it survived in such an original, unmolested state after all these years. I believe there is a banana yellow 1970 Hemi Charger that was originally purchased by a 15 year old that survived as another “benchmark” type car.
Hi Ed, Happy to read this one is "Very cool" :-) Hmmm, I'll keep an eye out for the Banana Yellow 1970 Hemi Charger. Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
Rare and beautiful survivor 😍😍😍😍😍 Thanks Lou!
Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) You're welcome motorTranz!
Nice Lou! This is a real treat!.
Happy to read this one is a "real treat!" :-) I think so too.
Lou as always another great video and the daytona charger is the sweetheart of all cars thanks love it
Allen my pleasure sharing this "sweetheart" with you :-) You're welcome.
My true dream car
NICE!
Great survivor Hemi wing car. Thanks Lou!
Hi John, Happy to share this "Great survivor Hemi wing car" with you :-) You're welcome.
WOW!! that is an iconic vehicle. I remember them running Daytona for the first time, and that was it. ruled unsafe. that IS a BENCHMARK!! great video, even with the lousy paint, it's beautiful. Don Garlits has one in his museum in Florida.
Hi David, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing and I believe you're going to see many more cars on this Channel you'll enjoy. Hope you Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this UA-cam Channel, Lou
Thanks Lou for another great video!
You're welcome Ken. My pleasure sharing with you.
Thanks Lou
You're welcome David
Also, these cars ran best at high speeds, not city driving. That’s why they sometimes conk out while stopped. Thx again Lou!
Hi Bradydog, My pleasure sharing this "banked curve special" with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
WOW.Love this car a lot Lou. A MOPAR fan
Hi Ollie, Happy to read you "Love this car a lot!" :-) Lou
😍Great looking High Wing!!!!👍
NICE!
My all time dream car
NICE!
Hey Lou.That low mileage survivor with that engine, is a diamond in the rough.Good story.
Hey Robert, Happy to share this "diamond in the rough" with you :-) Lou
THANKS LOU,BOB ,SHARING IT…I HAVE A FRIEND WHO HAS A COUPLE OF PLYMOUTH SUPERBIRDS🤗👍😎
Hi Budget Audiophile Life-long, You're welcome. I like who you have as a Friend :-) Lou
He is a nice humble guy who buys sells and trades classics
That "Grin," lol...as I've said before Lou - you meet up with the nicest car owners.
Take care...
Happy to read you enjoy the "grins" on the Channel :-)
Daytona has a longer wheelbase than the Superbird, just as the Dodge Coronet Super Bee had a longer Wheelbase than the Ply. Road runner.
Hi Nicky, Thanks for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
How cool was the 17 year old that walked into the dealership and bought this car. Beautiful car Bob, thank you Lou. Lou, do you have a classic car?
Hi Raider X, That would be pretty cool to be 17 years old and get one of these. You're welcome. Here is a story I think you'll enjoy, Lou ua-cam.com/video/kI6Ul6f3jAI/v-deo.html
Thank you Lou.@@loucostabile
After Richard Petty won almost every race in 1970 with his Daytona (he rode for Ford for 1 year in 1969 and Chrysler homoligated the car in 1969 to get him back), NASCAR put big restrictions on the winged cars including an engine that could be no bigger than a 305.
Hi Bradydog, Great memories of a great time for NASCAR, Lou
And a BENCHMARK video! Thanks Lou, it is REALLY nice to see an original in such nice condition!! And I think, this was early (prior to January 1, 1969) manufacture, due to the non-locking steering wheel? Can anyone verify this? Always a pleasure Lou! 🙂
"And a BENCHMARK video!" NICE! You're welcome Rick.
What a beautiful survivor! 👏👍👍🫡
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
What a find!
:-)
So Beautiful! 😍
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
Thanks, BOb & Lou: great overview, & Mechanics stuff, too… Interestingly, I had seen new *Superbird (forgot Color, automatic), parked downtown in Lafayette Indiana , before Graduation ( Pharmacy 70),& found way to long & Garish ( May still have been over budget then)…We using our 66;4 Speed until finally needing : in Fall 1979 ,a 70 DODGE Coronet 500/ 383/4 BBL/ Ralley red / Black vinyl @ some $3000.00: full price ..Interestingly, we did “ pass “on a 70 Challenger /triple Green RT/ SE/4 speed /383, * but **loaded every OPTION…..actually, the 383 in Coronet , Turquoise Engine, plenty powerful also!
Hi Opera, Happy to read you enjoy the overview of this car :-) Thanks for sharing some of the cars you remember, Lou
Good Morning Lou ! Now Mr. Bob said he has all his cars inspected . What else does he have ? Maybe some day ?? We will find out ? 🙏🏼
Good Morning Craig ! There are a few of Bob's on the Channel. Type into UA-cam search "My Car Story with Lou Daytona" and "My Car Story with Lou Superbird" and I think there will be another in there for you :-) Lou
Orange Crush! This car is the bomb.
NICE!
That really is something special ~ right down to the wile e. coyote decal, thnx guys. . . :>/
Hi Dr. Candor, Ahhh the Coyote on the tail is still trying to catch that Road Runner, or well a Charger.....hmmm, maybe he should have waited a year to put that decal on a Superbird :-) You're welcome.
I’m not sure I’d be riding anywhere in that if those are 50 year old tires.
....we're just taking it for a little spin so you can enjoy it too :-)
It might be stock, but I don’t think I could keep those hubcaps on it. Other than that, I like it as-is, it’s cool to see one essentially unrestored.
Thanks for viewing and sharing.
Nice 😊
Hi Michael, Happy to read this one is "Nice" :-) Lou
Rare parts, built for Talledaga.
Thanks for sharing what you notice.
👍💯😎💯👍
:-)
Place AMS oil in it full synthetic 10w40 Bob.
Thank you for viewing and sharing.
@@loucostabile ams oil been in business since 1972. They produce the oil, transmission fluids, gear lubes, brake fluids, power steering fluids, and anti freeze. Their fluids are 100% full synthetic and they don’t spend millions of dollars on fancy commercials to endorse their line of products. That way their money can be invested totally in their products. Their oil out performed Royal purple and Mobil 1 in a flow test. A lot of mechanics haven’t heard about this company. I’ve been knowing about them since I was a teenager and I’m 55 years old now.
I was 16 when I got my '67 GTO.😄
Hi Ed, That's a cool car. NICE! Lou
How do those cars fit into a standard garage?
They need a bit more room to fit :-)
💕👍 nice monster ! !
:-)
Interesting that he says the car has factory front drum brakes. The Super Birds had factory power front discs. Every article I've ever read including factory literature, say the 69 Charger 500, which the Daytona started out with, say power front disc brakes are std. Maybe this was a really early build?? Who knows. And I like that he still has so much trouble with the Hemi being coldblooded. They were, and the 1s with a solid cam were even worse to tune. Chassis/dyno tuning was the only way to get 1 right. Mr. Norm's was the place to have that done. My dad took his brand new 71 Cuda 340 to Mr Norm's to have tuned because he said the car never ran right with the dual breaker distributor. He told me that there was a line of Hemi cars, including 2 winged cars waiting to be tuned. Dad's car turned out to have the wrong springs in that dizzy. The tech dad talked to said that at the time, Chrysler was putting a ton of time in the 4bbl 440s because of police use, but was ignoring Hemi and even 440 3bbl cars because they were slated for scrap due to emissions. So what you bought, was what you got. Tuning was your problem.
Hi Adam, Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Glad to read this brings back memories of your Dads Cuda. Lou
I had a chance to buy one of these in 1978 for $1,500. Unfortunately I was a broke teenager. I still regret not being able to scrape up enough cash to buy it.
Hi Kevin, Sorry to read you did not get yours. Lou
Omg❤
:-)
Lou driving a 1969 Hemi Charger Daytona at age 17 we wouldn't have this channel to watch. Thank God that didn't happen!
....you're right! AMEN!
Looks like about 3 feet of front nose
....so make sure you keep a safe distance from the car in front of you :-)
Crossflow Hemi head featured better combustion for true racers.
Thanks for sharing what you notice.
This is a Holy Grail Hemi Daytona! Vitamin C orange and a survivor.
Originality is great, but this car needs fat radials on magnum or NASCAR wheels. Those hubcaps and skinny tires were meant to be tossed and replaced.
Hi soyounoat, Thank you for sharing what you would do, Lou
👍
:-)
Цікаве авто! Дякую!
Hi Сергій, Happy to share this interesting car with you. You're welcome, Lou
They are wild looking but I wouldn't want one. Gimme a Hemi Dart instead!
....like this one :-) ua-cam.com/video/9Asc-6rRPGU/v-deo.html
A Hemi car with drum brakes bought new by a 17 year old. Hilarious!
....probably couldn't afford the optional disc brakes, and heck, at 17 who needs brakes?
WOW! GREAT HEMI DAYTONA, WHAT A DREAM.THE RIGHT MAN OWNS IT NOW.👍👍👍🇺🇸
High praise.
