Its refreshing to think that it only requires two monophonic abrasive sounding and super limited synths, two drum machines, imagination and a lot of patience, and something as fat and timeless sounding as this is possible. We live in an era where we are so spoilt for music-making tool choices...
It was a great time, even if you owned hardware - you only had so many options, and we would push the tools we had to their limits trying to squeeze something new and and fresh out of them. You also ended up knowing every piece of software or hardware inside out and could move through it like it was a part of your soul. Every little nuance of its behaviour was apparent to you and you could exploit these little details to your advantage. A very good reminder of how sticking with a handfull of choices is greater than always jumping to the latest thing. Unfortunately one also has to balance that with a need for achieving that "modern" sound as there is a kind of "standard" you hear in every generation of music.
TGVirus was one of the most amazing artists in the ReBirth community. I downloaded every ReBirth songfile I could find by him. Later on, I listened to the Nordbeat stuff he did with AHTSI/TripleTuned. I remember before I had the full version, this song was slightly longer than how long you could use the demo program for. So when the song was close to being over, you'd get a popup that says your 15 minutes is up, wait for the song to finish, and then click "OK" to close the program.
Ah man this still sounds so great! I remember back when I was just a 7 year old kid my older brother downloaded the demo for this. We spent hours and hours trying to make songs and had a blast. Ever since I have been making my own music. Creativity is the best thing about being human
if you are used too use a real tb303 its not that diffrent too use and you coudt use the pattern generator program to pre program the patterns in a easy way
This was _the_ track that came with the software. All the others were... yeah, nice. This one blew them all out of the water by three orders of magnitude!
with 18 years old playing with this demo all day... "one day i will get the full version" but then they made "REASON" and i got REASON 1.01 and i start making my first techno tracks...
As amazing as Rebirth was, it was incredibly constrained compared to what a more modern digital setup would look like. It's absolutely mindblowing that so many people back then could work within these constraints and construct such elaborate and amazing tracks like this. This probably represents at least a dozen hours conservatively, of painstaking programming to finally get this sound. I'm amazed 9:55-12:55 is such a classic '98-'00 banger. The buildup at 12:12 is just😙👌
