Once I was a normal person playing tecno with Rebirth in my pc. After a while I had the same idea: get the real things. So I bought a 303 and so on. Rebirth ruined my life. Be careful out there 😅
I love all your Bad Gear episodes, but it's also nice to see you branching out to other themes. I hope you do more Bad Gear AND other projects in the future. Whatever you do is golden! 😎
RB-338 was my gateway. 26 years later, I own 537 plugins, 7 hardware synths, 12 drum machines, 5 DAW's and zero finished albums. But I own, therefore I AM.
Usually, people own a license to use a certain software but it doesn't mean, they own the software. You are thereby, not allowed to use the software as you like. You are only allowed to use the software as the license allows you to. A significant difference...
I remember when ReBirth came out, I was 17 and I was instantly hooked. I spent many years producing hard techno with it, routing it into cubase via some obscure internal tool before they released ReWire. I had totally forgotten about the skins until I saw them in this video and it all came flooding back, I used many of them extensively. Man, this is a stark reminder that I used to be very passionate about creating music. Don't know what happened to that.
I also started using it at 17. But I had no idea how to use drum machines or sequencers. I just selected different presets and pretended I was an EDM producer. Back then there were no tutorial videos. Didn't know anyone who did know how to use that gear.
Yet another awesome episode!! Thank you! I have so many fond memories of ReBirth! I agree with many others that this was a nice alternative topic. Everything you do is fantastic!😊
No way can anyone engineer something like this outside of this channel. Off the charts skill level along with cooking 90s sounds that will never get old.
I lost my Ipad air 2 back in 2016 with my Rebirth installed then found it recently in the back pocket of the front seat in my Jeep! Ipad still works Rebirth is still installed! Happy Times.
Nostalgia overload! Rebirth was what got me into ‘serious’ music production. I remember thinking to myself: this is all I need to produce my first album 😅! I actually saved up for months to buy just Rebirth and a PC. And that lead me to Reason. I still don’t use reverb because Rebirth didn’t have one. And the 303 was my first introduction to synthesis. Remember that incredible TG Virus Megamix? By the way, D16 and Audiorealism have both kinda recreated Rebirth (in software, of course) , and mighty fine they are too.
My EHX Canyon is a permanent fixture on my board's mono aux send, it has earned its place as a performer seperate from my stereo fx chain. Invaluable little pedal, even in mono I find myself using it often. And I freaking love the 1960s lunchbox artwork aesthetic. I thought it might be cool to gang up a pair to create a dual-channel / stereo pair - I think the slewing inaccuracies introduced as you simultaneously worked each pedal with a separate hand might produce some cool stereo effects (or make people woozy).
@@AudioPilz No I haven't, but it looks a little more complicated than I need and apparently sums the input to mono. The idea of pairing and rigging up mono pedal pairs into 2-handed expressive controllers for stereo results seems like a fun idea, for sound design and tweaking live.
My cousin used to have this on the computer, rebirth was my first glance at electronic music production, the first thing i used to make music, never stoped since then! Thank u
Bro i feel you.. i run Electribe, Donner B-1, TD-3, RD-6 together (and i even hook up Crave and use Donner as MIDI), all of this into Zoon G1Four... and it was a nightmare to hook up. Some of the gear never wanted to work with Korg sync, Korg refused to recognize other gear, TD and RD refused to sync in other way other than Midi sync... and one time this contraption catched a spark and made my PC go nuts- without even being hooked up to the same PC by Midi!... Also after that my game controller stated working as a mouse and i was able to control audio options with it... I can only imagine what you've been thru!
Actually what you did was a very basic set up, knowing how to do it as what to use as a master clock is your probable issue, like those 9+ min sets where you use the same sequence and turn 2 or 3 knobs. Good luck though, I really look forwards to more of these sets.
Love this. Rebirth was actually where I made my first steps learning about sequencing and programming. There's a slew of 303, 808 and 909 clones, emulations and whatnot but I am with you that it was a special thing that should be set free
Pretty Nostalgic to see those old Steinberg logo's with that late 90's / early zero years Interface of Rebirth. It's from back in the day when they really innovated and invented cool stuff like Rewire, VST an the ASIO standard (which is in desperate need of a thorough modernization, only supporting 1 device at a time is very 1997). In a way Rebirth was a kind of software groovebox. Now in 2023 we've got grooveboxes that can run plugins and that come with ASIO drivers. We've come full circle!
living the dream! I remember working as teenager doing inventory for a music instrument shop and seeing the Rebirth brochure and the Yamaha CS1x brochure and thinking it was so cool how they looked like rave flyers ha
🙃 Damn! thought I had curly hair at 16! Rebirth was my first softsynth experience at about the same time I got access to NI FM7. How the times have changed, but not really when you think about it...
I have a rebirth set up I configured too. A Drumbrute for the 808, Behringer 909 clone, x2 TD-3 303 Behringer Clones. All dialed into a mixer with multifx. Rad video btw
Rebirth was so great. I used it all over my late 90s tracks. The iPad version was a ton of fun, wish they had been able to keep it around.Watching you try to recreate the whole thing was a delight. Here's one of my RB tracks (plus nord lead and kurzweil k2000) - ua-cam.com/video/GGflAi552vo/v-deo.html
I have 2 older iPads that have it installed - can't surf the web or watch UA-cam with them, but they'll hold a charge for weeks and still run those old offline music making apps just fine.
If you had it on older iPad then it will run on a new one too. You have to go to your purchases and then find or search for it there. iPhone version doesn’t work tho as it is 32 but:/ I have downloaded mine two weeks ago on previous gen iPad Air. It is a blast of the past 🫠
Nice video. ReBirth.ONE was one of the earliest music programs I bought. I used it in combination with an old Creative Labs Sound Blaster, a Yamaha S-YXG70 Soft Synthesizer that came with the PC version of FFVII, Music Write Plus midi notation software, a cheap Casio keyboard, a free version of Sonic Foundry Acid pH1 for mixing, Magix Hiphop/Techno Maker for effects like EQ and reverb and a whole bunch of chopped up samples and loops to create some really shitty music. All of those tracks got lost when my harddrive caught fire (literately) which probably was divine intervention to save humanity... Those were the days.

Awesome work! Rebirth has such a special place in my heart. I would spend hours recording the output of my computer to cassette tape so I could play my tracker and Rebirth songs on my friends hifi. What a time.
wow great job! IRL Rebirth sounds so good! just one thing, at 5:03 theres no need for a reamp here, the DS-1's input impedance is around 100k which absolutely anything can drive. Its going the other direction (high output z into low input z) that you might need to consider an impedance matching device.

Oh this is SUCH a cool concept!!!! I'd love you trying out a spinoff series where you attempt to replicate digital DAWs and such with real hardware. Good stuff!
Rebirth was awesome because it was my first encounter with software synths. I spent a goodish while a couple of weeks ago, getting it to run on my modern Windows 11 computer (not all that trivial as most guides don't actually work correctly on Windows 11), and I have to admit that it sounded way worse than I remembered it. The latency, while okay back then (I mean, I wasn't used to anything better) is really poor, and the overall sound just didn't quite do it for me anymore. I was actually expecting it to be one of those "OMG! I remember this! It's so cooooool!" moments, but it just made me feel grateful for the more modern (and vintage) setup I have now. No 303-clone in my setup, admittedly, but if I really want something similar, the "Transistor Bass" plugin in FL Studio does that job way better than Rebirth ever did.
What is so funny, is that I basically did the same as you IRL - I was already into hardware but could never afford more than a 101, so ReBirth was genius when it came out. Now I'm older, I've got all of them (two 101s, only one 303 sadly) and it's an absolute fortune trying to get them all working at the same time, given all the outputs of the 707/808/909. I've even got two Boss BX-8s for the drum machines, but I should have bought shares in RME! Thank you, loved the idea!
