My adventures in Barbados continued as I dive even deeper into the world of Bajan cuisine! Come with me as I learn how to make a local favorite, roasted breadfruit!
For this adventure, I headed over to Yelluh Meat in Bridgetown. I watched as they slit the breadfruit and then char them over a roaring fire. I had to wear goggles because otherwise, the smoke and fire messes up my eyes!

Breadfruit is super starchy and tasty and they roast it because they don’t eat it raw. You can make fries or chips from them. They’re better than potatoes!
After they charred some breadtruit, they cut them open. The meat inside is yellow and starchy. Then, they take out the breadfruit heart, which isn’t edible, and they add butter. The breadfruit with melted butter was smoky and felt kind of cheesy! It’s also filling!
They then top it with pickles, saltfish buljol, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet peppers, and lime juice! It’s almost like a salt fish salad or a ceviche! It looked amazing! I loved the mix of the refreshing vegetables, lime juice, fish, and the breadfruit.
You can also get it topped with smoked herring or pig tails, but I opted for the saltfish because I didn’t want to deal with so many tiny bones. It was drowning in butter and was so good!
I tried a bit of Craig’s readfruit with smoked herring. It was really tasty, and Nerissa’s pig tails breadfruit was also delicious! I loved the meaty and fatty pigtails. I thought it was the best one! They have lots of different options there, so be sure to try them when you visit!
Then, I saw them cooking some jerk chicken, and then, they make a taco with a breadfruit shell, some slaw, beef, cheese, and pineapple salsa. The shell was crispy and the meat had a bit of sweetness to it because of the pineapple salsa.
You can also have jerk chicken and saltfish buljol in it. It was an amazing Bajan breakfast taco! I loved the breadfruit shell way more than corn or flour!
Then, we drove past a lot wilderness to get to the eastern coast of the island. We arrived at Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill, which is home to the Caribbean’s largest and only working windmill. After seeing it, we drove on to Cherry Tree Hill, a popular viewpoint where also they sell crafts and souvenirs.
They had a gorgeous conch shell, painted coconut bowls, marble crafts, bracelets, and more. From there, we could see the Atlantic Ocean. We drove down East Coast Road, past lots of local homes. This area of Barbados was sparsely populated, but eventually, we found more homes and shops.
We stopped at Uncle Joe’s Seaside Bar & Grill, where Mick Jagger used to come back in the 1970s and ‘80s! It’s a rustic restaurant with a modernized terrace. We grabbed some beers (I got a Guinness Foreign Extra Stout) and enjoyed the view and the breeze.
Then, we headed to Animal Flower Cave at the southernmost point on the island. The shore is very rocky but you can see lots of caves and the waves breaking against the rocks. It’s beautiful!

This is mouth watering. Man I'm beginning to love everything about Barbados🇧🇧. Wish Bajans were the type of Caribbean people who migrate in high numbers to other Caribbean islands. We could use some Bajans here in the Bahamas🇧🇸. Best food i ever ate was at ostins Barbados. Swordfish grilled potatoes coleslaw fried plantains with 3 bajan Banks Beers.🍸🍾.. 💥💥💥💥💥
Sorry but Bajans love Barbados and we always go home no matter where we live or roam in the world. Our Premier, Mr. Errol Barrow made it so we can always come home.
Oistins on a Friday night is great

Breadfruit is truly one of the best things you can ever eat.
Yes I agree! ❤
I am so happy for this guy, he got the taste of the West Indian food.
I like the way he sounds when he gets the taste.
Breadfruit is from the Pacific Islands. It was brought to Jamaica by Capt. Cook to feed the slaves. It is being used in Hawaii and other Pacific islands to ferment into poi. It is very nourishing.
Breadfruit, looks so good. I love it. Goes well with meats and fish. The taco first time I saw that. Will love to try that. Beautiful Island. 💕💕💕

That breadfruit taco looks good.
Roast breadfruit and flying fish on the beach dipped in the sea water 😋😋😋that’s a childhood memory of mine.
I lived in Barbados in the 60s next to the fishing market on Bay street now defunct. The fishermen use to roast breadfruit and fish next to the market...dip it in a bucket of seawater and feed me and my siblings. They were so nice to us.
As soon as I land in Bim, I'm heading for to Yelluh Meat! I prefer roasted breadfruit all the time!

All over the Pacific islands!!! We love it like we love taro, and bananas
Breadfruit is my favorite one of the best food you can eat❤
I coming to barbados to eat that bread fruit .
Oh..I lived there but did not know about this place doing these things on the breadfruit. I love yellow meat. This was the second best of Barbados that you did.
🌸 my nana had lots of trees, the yellow variety. I’m referring to the flesh, it’s richer in flavour than the white one
Exactly like the ones featured in this video. I just love breadfruit, especially in oil down. Mom made veggie one, with chillies 🌶
Very delicious with coconut milk 😋
I am glad they found something to do with breadfruits. I like those.
The guy who’s making the bread for his breathing and smoke all day. That can’t be healthy. Thanks for sharing David. That’s a fruit that I have to try soon.😊
this is the GOAT of Travel! If he goes everywhere!
My mouth watering just watching this 🤤😋 🇧🇧🇧🇧
Waiting for you to try souse
he said he doesnt like pig feet or chicken feet but much prefers the salt fish
@@dwaynejordan5898 Ge doesn't have to do trotters and steppers, you can get lean meat, pig tail or even chicken!
@@dwaynejordan5898 He truly enjoyed the Puddin and Lean Souse at Craig's mom home. He tried Souse with chicken feet and other kind of trotters and it was obvious he was being polite. I enjoyed every moment of that episode. Bajans make an absolutely delicious Puddin and Souse. 🇧🇧🇨🇦🇧🇧🇨🇦🇧🇧
Iam from Haïti God job very good😇😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
My beautiful island, very creative 👌
Imagine I'm here in the UK with my mouth watering.
oh my goodness I need this 😀
just for the record you had the best one also the yellow meat breadfruit is sweeter for sure....
you should go to my mothers canteen opposite john moore's bar in St.James her food is lovely
Bajan don't do dry jerk. Bajans do seasoning that is done differently than how Jamaicans do theirs. And Bajans do their seasoning different so that the fry chicken and fry fish is something to talk about.
24:01 tryna figure out the parish church 🤣 gold
Can't wait to eat that in December.
Bread fruit forever!!
I lived in the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas for 15 years. Bread fruit and many other things grew there. They grew in my yard. I ate them all. Island life is the best life.
Where in East coast is this place. This look tasty, I want to go there.
Samoans enjoy Bread Fruit also👌
That nice white guy ate everything in sight 😂 what a cool place. Love from Jamaica. Scraping the burnt part of the fruit would be great.
I'm looking at the breadfruit roasting and thinking of dragon eggs from Game of Thrones
I think u found where i am going when i go to barbados
Roast, take out meat, seasoned with herbs, little breadcrumbs, shape in ball, roll very thin,Pringle thickness, cut out chips size and deep fry.
Dough like texture you must get.
I think you passed the sleeping giant. That's what that land formation is called...best viewed from the hill
Ammma hearing my island jamaica 🇯🇲 🥰👍
@Davidsbeenhere FYI Around March - April, the Animal Flower Cave is a good place to whale-watch as well.
Great content😉🤞
Love it, love it. Bless
my best bro david looking really really handsome thank you for your huge respect against cpec countries lot of love from your cousin viki 💙
I loveeee breadfruit
Wow... Here in d.r. we call that fruit "güanabana"... We eat it as is or make a juice or milk shake from it... But i had NEVER even thought something like this existed ❤❤.
Imma tru that
Two different fruits my friend. What you’re referring to is what Bajans call Soursop. The breadfruit in this video is known in D.R as Buen Pan I believe. They look similar on the outside but they are two different fruits.
@@Angelgal8teen
😱😱😱
Youre right!!!!
What happened was that i fast forwarded the beginning of the video and didnt see the fruit before roasting... (And i low key was thinking that i was looking at soursop and forgot that it is called that in english...)
But it looked VERY similar on the inside...
And when it comes to buenpan... I had never seen the actual fruit... Ive only ever seen the seed... And my mother used to make that shit boiled... I have NEVER liked buenpan (aka breadfruit 😜😜)
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Actually breadfruit does not have a seed. It had a white heart. What you are referring to is bread nut
@@gailspinks1
I looked it up.... It seems there are two variations of buenpan...

Why I sit down drulling over bread fruit.😜😜
Belly lover, David lolol. We appreciate having you here
I am first. Awesome video 💛
Growing up eating plantain tostones, when I first had breadfruit tostones it blew my mind. They are now way more common in PR. #Tostonesdepana
Man burning up the breadfruit. Upon looking at the entire vid, I realize that burning the fruit will enable a good crust for their method of serving.
I will recommend using Coconut oil though.
The end product looks delicious!
So let's see. What can I write today!!! Nah, just kidding. Very well put together. A blend of some history and food. I have never seen breadfruit with stuffing like that and breadfruit 🌮 which looked so delicious. Who would have thunk it (thunk=slang). I wish she would have shown how she made the 🌮 itself. I guess we could slice it thinly, fry it and fold it to form. What a nice alternative to the corn taco. As an aside: for health reasons, please use real butter instead of margarine. Margarine is very, very bad for your health and cholesterol: it lowers the good HDL and raises the bad LDL. So butter is better in moderation. As for the countryside, how nice it is to see the natural beauty of the island. Those rocks with the sea(ocean) waves lashing against them sort of reminds me of the Cliffs of Dover . Simply amazing the way they look. But David, where was the rum and coconut?🤔. After hearing you say that the goggles are worn by fire fighters, then we don't have to worry but you have to stay from that heat and flames. We don't want you to melt down like a snowman ⛄ LoL. Anyway, David, good content and well put together and you gave us some history as well. The series so far is to just sit back, relax and enjoy. So on to the next one. David, be well, be safe and blessings to you and your family, and your team.💕🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦 BTW, I thought you were going to do the Titanic thing by raising your hands in the air saying "I'm king of the world". LoL
Have to visit cottage bar in st .Joseph
