I was in a long distance relationship for about a year (I lived in Canada, and he lived in Italy) and that was extremely extreeeeeemely EXTREMELY hard on both of us... not just because of all of the points that you guys made in this video- but also, timezones suck. Big time.
We had to be extra careful about how/when to time our conversations, phone calls, etc... because we both worked as well... and just to be able to talk to one another, sometimes we would stay up way late/wake up at absurd hours of the day just to be able to communicate. It was so difficult, you guys... but so worth it. Now we're married! And I live in Europe! Woo!
I feel lucky because I have a dual citizenship (to begin with) so moving and relocating my life was pretty simple. But I feel for those who have to go through all of the legality bull that we initially had tried to do when we thought about moving him to Canada... Just... nope...

I’m thrilled Niko is making more videos with you! I appreciate hearing your words about long distance, it can be incredibly difficult but I find long-term plans really help. My boyfriend has until June before he has finished his uni degree, but we’ve has four years of long distance! It’s going to be so sweet when he moves in with me next year! I doubt he is as excited about all the pastel decor I intend on putting everywhere!

My best friend married her boyfriend who she met online after 4 years of long-distance (US/Canada) dating. A lot of people were skeptical, but the two of them got each other through a lot, and I've never seen her more happier in the 15+ years I've known her! THANK YOU Niko and Alb, for saying long-distance, online relationships work!
My fiance and I were long distance, too. I'm English, he's Welsh. Early on, there was a period where we didn't see each other for three months, and I mean literally didn't see each other (He's like a granddad in a 23 year old's body - Skype was a mystery to him for so long.) After that, we both decided we could not go that long with just texts, calls and photos ever again. We never went home from a visit without setting the date for the next one. We wrote letters, which I found to be much more comforting than an intangible text. I finally taught him how to use Skype, and we made jokes about how we had so many cheesy romantic reunions on train station platforms.
I'm in a similar situation. Only the boyfriend is Scottish. Get to see him every three or four months as long as we keep on top of planning, but because of work schedules (he starts about the time I finish) I often don't get much chance to chat to him for long periods of time either. Its hard =(
I like the letters idea. Might try that. And maybe convince him to teach me Skype (I'm the grandpa here xD).

Not only is your dynamic as a couple so beautiful and wholesome to witness, but this is by far the most articulate and emotionally uplifting video that I ever have seen about long distance relationships. I've been in my LDR for a year and a third now, and it gives me so much hope to see your love thriving! My boyfriend and I live on opposite coasts of the United States, and we rarely get to be together with fewer than 3 or 4 months in between trips. It can feel bleak, but it's wonderful to see proof that when you truly love someone, the struggles of long distance are worth being together eventually. Wooow. This video hit home. Emotionally in both positive and negative ways. I was in a long distance and you hit it right on the nose. Giving up time for eachptjer and what that means. My partner lied to me and was sleeping with her ex. I also found out she had no plan for me when i was moving. She had not come out to her family. Our end goals were not the same. I'm actually at his house right now and leaving to go back home tonight and it' the worst because we don't know when we'll see each other next and we're trying so hard to work things out so I can move out here with him. It really does almost feel hopeless when we make plans for me to get out here and they fall through for one reason or another but it's always great to see such an amazing couple who worked through it. You really are an inspiration.
I'm so very happy for you both, but seeing this does make me a little sad since my long distance relationship fell apart. There are some things you guys talk about that I really relate to, and some hard truths to face. Things weren't perfect but I felt like it was something worth fighting for... ultimately, relationships take work and when things don't match up it's easy to let those things divide you. I hope this video gives some good insight to those who are looking for understanding and a real honest perspective on the highs and lows of the LDR. I happy-cried through this whole video lol! I'm so happy for you two! You seem so great for eachother. I was in an LDR for a couple of years. I was in Michigan and he was in California. We talked all day, every day for years and then I came to visit him in Oakland, California. We had so much fun at first, but after awhile we found out we didn't work out day-to-day in a confined space. We're still friends, and I ended up moving to California anyway, getting my own place, and falling in love with someone else in San Francisco. It all works out.

I really really love you guys and I’m so glad you overcame those obstacles to be together because seeing you together makes me so happy and I know it makes you happy, it’s so incredible. Unfortunately I lost hope in LDRs after sort of being in one for over 6 years, and since the thought of that person still makes my heart crumble. ( I have since moved on and I’m very happily in love but thinking about everything we went through in that long distance relationship and the way it ended still kills me). I do hope this video helps out some other souls currently in a similar situation! Distance should not keep you from ending up with the person you believe you’re meant to be with.

You guys are so cute, this is some really good advice/information. I’ve been in a long distance relationship for a bit over two years. We lived in the same state for a year so we got to know each other pretty well before the ldr. I cannot stress enough how important communication and commitment are. Being in a relationship in general is hard and it takes a lot of commitment and effort. Everything goes both ways.
You guys give me so much hope for my relationship ;^; I've been in an LDR for 4 years and there isn't really an end of that in sight at least for a year but it's still so unsure. I hope we can live together and be as happy as you two, and soon. Thank you for being so inspiring.

Niko has the prettiest smile and she just gives off this wise, funny, trustworthy vibe! My girlfriend and I have been in an ldr (between Texas and New York, about 2,000 miles) for nine months now. We've had three visits, four months apart which is The Worst, but our next visit is planned two months from now and then she intends to move down to me in autumn. Everything y'all say about communication and goals is 100% true. If you aren't on the same page in terms of goals, it isn't worth your time, and if you aren't on the same page in terms of communication, schedule a time to video chat any super important conversations. Video chat saves lives y'all. Much better than calling and definitely better than messaging.
I love and relate to this video so much. My husband and I were in a long distance relationship for five years between Canada and the UK before we married. For us, something that really helped was gaming together online so that we had an activity we could share if we ran out of things to chat about. The immigration process was definitely the most difficult part and involved a lot of money, sacrifice and painful uncertainty, but we made it! I'm so glad you are both able to live in the same country now too and I hope this video gives hope to anyone who's going through the same thing.

This was needed, I have been in a long distance relationship for now 10 months. I live in Canada and my boyfriend lives in England. I flew down this summer and it was amazing! It is hard and a lot of paper work to move together but it’s so worth it! The paperwork is long and sometimes a pain but it works out in the end. I am flying down in January and putting my visa papers in!! Thank you for this. Love is worth the wait and I am so happy for this experience with him
This has touched my heart so very much. My boyfriend of five years and I have been long distance for about a year and a half now. He's gone to university in Los Angeles, while I go in New York. It's been tough, but I think having a solid foundation is so important. We're both so busy with classes, work, internships, etc. I miss him constantly, but honestly, it makes you grow so fond of the person; you cherish them.

So nice to hear talks of LDR and how it's worth it and you can do it if the person and relationship are worth it to you. I've been LDR with my partner who moved to Scotland to finish a grad. program for over two years now. People in LA can be really FOMO and instant gratification when it comes to dating but my partner and I know this is worth it. Love you both!

Thank you so much for this video! My girlfriend and I have always been long distance, we met online and we have been in a relationship for four years. It can be incredibly difficult and there have been some times where we were close to giving up but we never did. A few weeks ago, we met each other for the first time. The time we spent together were the happiest days of my life, but the hardest thing I've ever had to do is watch her leave and not get on the train with her and leave everything behind to be with her. We have at least another four years apart before we can live together, and that's such a daunting length of time, but when I think about how happy I was when we were together for those few days, I know it's well worth the wait.

My partner and I are long distance (I'm in Ontario and they're in Germany) and it's SO hard sometimes. But for all the ways that it's difficult, it's the most wonderful relationship I could imagine/have ever been in. We chatted with ALB at ConBravo! this year about it (and Monsters University because it is the best) and she had some wonderful insights. This video definitely made me tear up because despite the absolute heartache of airport goodbyes and judgements from others about the viability of long distance relationships, I know we're in it for the long haul and it's wonderful not to feel so alone.
