    At any point in the history of the NBA prior to the past decade Zach Edey is regarded as a consensus #1 overall pick, franchise cornerstone, and generational big man. At what point do all these league trends stop mattering in the face of a guy who's just bigger and stronger than everyone else and can just put the ball in the basket over everyone else as has been the norm for most of basketball history?

      Yessir. Notice who the best player in the league is right now. A big, slow, defensive liability who couldn't shoot. Jokic. That was his scouting report.
      The center is returning. LeBron retires soon and so do the soft play rules. They've already started allowing face up hand checking. Next is lane contact.

    I don’t think you guys realize that literally the only guy who can body him in the league is Joel Embiid which is why the Sixers might as well just draft him as a back up.

    Something that is often overlooked is that Edey’s basketball “age” experience is about 5-6 years, compared to other of his peers in the college game. He is still learning and developing his skill set. He has made marked improvement every year, and has not peaked with his performance.

    I do tape review for the NBA draft. Im talking about the NBA. Not a website. I work for 3 scouts.
    Yall did the very best video on Zach. He's my logical 1 in this draft. That means hes the best option, not that he'll go 1.
    Until 2014, Edey would be number 1 with a bullet. He's a monster.
    Where do you have him now? After the tournament run and how he ate Clingan alive, did you move him up?
    Go watch the Gil's arena with Sheed. He says the same thing I did.
    BTW, I started in 06 doing tape. That was the worst draft I've seen. Almost quit doing it because of how difficult it was to grade guys because they were all mediocre at best, and I was disenchanted by that. A scout explained to me that I just got in on a bad draft. 07 was landmark.
    I score drafts. 0-100 40 is average and 80+ is '03 level. '84 would be a 100. '06 was a 12. I have this one at 9.6. That means I think maybe 2-3 guys last 5 years.

      @@Centermass007 sorry for the late response. I've been busy on Sarr. Hard pass.
      I was a tape rat for a college scout. He got an NBA job. He brought me along. That's how I got in. Go to a local HS and ask. It's how I got started.
      It's pretty secure at my level.

    As a former player when I watch Edey, I don't think he really is that slow. He looks slow because he's big and lumbery but he's not getting back late on defense and he's remarkably athletic for a 7' 4" dude. Anyone who doubts Edey ought to consider how you would feel going up against a team with Edey on it. I do not think you see Edey on the other side and start licking your chops. He is going to be a problem for any opposing offense and defense if he stays healthy and takes the next logical steps of progression. I would love to have Portland draft him and put him at the 5, Ayton at the 4, Grant at the 3, Sharpe at the 2, Scoot at the 1. To me that is a championship lineup.

    I love Edey and I've seen so many lazy stereotypical hot takes which actually annoy me at times.
    For a 7'4.5" 285 lbs (had lost ~ 22 lbs prior to this season) giant, he is relatively quick and fast. And those who say he is Boban #2 or a Mark Eaton #2 with no lift, etc., I call BS! He literally measured at nearly a 30" vertical at the combine last year while weighing 22 lbs heavier. And, he could even have a 32" vertical this year. Last year his lane agility measurement was at 11.37. Meanwhile, Da Ron Holmes at 6'10" who is supposed to be athletic, measured at 11.48!
    In four years, Edey has missed one game due to illness out of a 133 games. This year he is averaging 31.3 minutes per game and could probably go 36 minutes if need be. People might want to compare that to Clingan!
    I see him as beyond a "specialty guy." I see him at minimum as a solid rotational backup in the league.
    I want Portland to take him at #14 thru #17! Am I crazy?

    • @xLeeroycranex
      @xLeeroycranex 6 місяців тому +3

      I want the Blazers to get him too.
      People who say he's slow are stupid....NBA combine numbers, he was as fast as or faster in agility/lane drills than many NBA starting centers.
      Risacher or Williams with Top 5 pick and Edey with Warriors pick.
      In theory, one of those wings I listed+Sharpe+Simons (maybe Scoot someday) will open the floor up for Edey due to their shooting. If they miss, Edey outrebounds the competition and passes out for more.
      It's not complicated imo

  • @ericibaugh8231
    @ericibaugh8231 6 місяців тому +7

    I personally think that for certain teams Zach could be a phenomenal back up center, his post up game and rebounding is unquestionable, he's an absolute physical specimen at 7'4 300+ pounds, he's solid at shooting free throws, and plays good defense in the paint when he isn't worried about getting fouls. The clear issues he has is the lack of spacing he brings and he definitely looks pretty slow on the court. That being said I believe if he can develop his playmaking from the post (passing out to open shooters when he's getting doubled) he could create some serious problems for teams defensively. I certainly don't expect him to be a star in the NBA, but if given solid minutes and good guidance he could be a super solid role player for a lot of teams.

    His shot in the combine looks good. That may not translate to in-game right away but I could see the sky in a couple years taking that out to the 3-point line. I kind of think that with his production, shooting in the combine ect he may be one of the steals of the draft. Especially if a team has a coach and the willingness to hide his defensive deficiencies.

      Why do we like 3 point shooting? Efficiency. And Zach puts out similar efficiency from 2. AND at better consistency! Offensively he could be very effective if used right. Also if you aren’t a championship team plying small ball, why not go against the grain? Teams aren’t build to deal with him. Kind of like when golden state went against the grain with small ball they were really hard to stop. Edey can be a weapon against that overcorrection of everyone chucking three wether they’re elite at it or not

    One thing overlooked quite a bit, especially for a guy his size, is that he has had zero, zero, injury issues in 4 years in college. That's impressive.
    Also, he only plays close to the basket because that's what's asked of him. He's an unknown from a shooting perspective (while having very impressive shooting in practices), but having a great FT form is promising. I feel he's got one of the highest floors in the draft, which doesn't mean he should be a high pick, but mid to late 1st would be good value, imo.

      Not an unknown. I did tape review on him for 3 NBA scouts this year. That includes practice tapes and the preseason unattended scrimmages against local colleges.
      He can shoot. He's very reliable out to 17 feet and will average 30 percent from 3 if he takes em. Remember, he's always open due to his size.
      He can also run. And his footwork is A+++. He's a legitimate lottery guy in a good draft. This is the worst draft I've ever reviewed, and I've been doing it since 06. Go look that draft up. It's absolutely horrible. This one is far, far worse.

    His defense should be looked at with the frame that he isn’t asked to be a shot blocker at Purdue. His number one priority is not picking up fouls so if he isn’t in the perfect position, he will let guys get stuff up. He doesn’t hunt blocks the way most guys his size do.
    I see a lot of people say that he doesn’t have a bag, but everything elite about edey happens when he doesn’t have the ball. He is able to bury his defender on almost every possession and put them in a position where their only option is to foul.
    His success at the next level is solely based on where he goes, and how much that coach wants to feature him.

      @ripsett6638 4 місяці тому +1

      @@thequixoticangler3364 Very true. Seldom does he get off balance and he can finish on both sides. Even in the relatively few instances he fades away, while not ideal for his size, he shows off his touch. His body control and spatial awareness for his size is pretty remarkable. His motor is crazy and those workhorse archetypes don’t usually come at 7’4, 300 pounds. Seeing him dive on loose balls as many times as he did at Purdue was awesome. Only playing for as long as he has, I’m sure he’ll take another massive leap in skill in the league.
      All those teams would be very interesting. The wemby or Chet pairing would give him some help on the P&R and perimeter on D (literally the only thing talking heads bring up). I’m not too informed on Orlando’s current roster. I know there has been some clamoring in Toronto for him and would like to see a homecoming for him, though I’m not sure how well he fits there.

      @@ripsett6638 Ooh I'm loving this.
      1. Toronto is not a good fit stylistically. He'd sell tickets.
      2. Yes to what you said on OKC/SA. Both feature a unicorn stretch 4. Edey fits perfectly in both places.
      3. Denver is good because he's a carbon copy of Joker. If they can get him, we finally get to answer the question of what 2 Jokers on the floor looks like. They'd know how to use him.
      4. He's never been hurt. Ever. At his size, that's not just unheard of, it's impossible. I'm asking for a blood test immediately. I'm checking to see if this kid has oil instead of blood. He might be a robot. LoL.
      He's the logical 1 in this garbage fire draft. He's a top 5 pick in any draft before the Jalil Okafor draft(he was the reason the NBA stopped using big men).
      He's special. You see it. I see it. He devoured Clingan who might go 1 on "potential"(I could write a book on why that's a horrible metric). He's gonna be the ROY.

    • @ripsett6638
      @ripsett6638 4 місяці тому +1

      @@thequixoticangler3364 One thing I find interesting in the Jokic/Edey comparison is that they both invested in other sports when they were younger (Jokic’s water polo and Edey’s baseball and hockey). Idk if that could be a reason for their motors or their durability or if they both are just lucky or freaks lol. Edey doesn’t have the court vision and passing that Jokic does, but I think he could develop a better passing game, especially from the high post (mostly hand offs at Purdue). Im just so curious what it will look like to not see him getting double or triple teamed every time he touches the ball.
      Everyone says that he’s this slow plodding center, and while end to end he’s not blazing, but if you look at his shuttle times he beat out most of he ranked towards the top in post players last year. The dude is pretty agile.
      Media will point to anything they can to dismiss him as even a lottery pick. He’s not a sexy pick and the whole nba is wrapped up in selling 3’s and breakaway dunks. Everyone wants a Swiss Army knife and Edey just happens to be big ol sledgehammer. I’m a die hard Purdue fan and have thoroughly enjoyed watching him dominate the last two years with. “Old school basketball”. With his character and work ethic the guys deserves to be a star. I mean the kid would stay the last two years hours after games to sign stuff and take pictures with fans. Just hope he lands somewhere with a coach with some creativity who isn’t locked into the current nba meta.

Coach has the center playing point forward, and if he’s surrounded by perimeter shooters, there be no stopping the offence, and defensively I don’t buy the argument about speed of the oposition as a detriment when he’d be on the court, the other players only need to slow the play to his pace.

I think as he gets more acclimated to the NBA game he'll be starter worthy. I will give you this - it largely depends on what situation he is drafted into , and how that franchise values him. I've seen A LOT of NBA players who had the talent - but for whatever reason weren't put into the ideal situation & thus were not afforded much of an opportunity. You'll see that a lot , then down the road another team sees something in the player at a spot of need , and they eventually ball out. I sm finding it so hard to fir Edey into the first rnd. I just can't see his lack of mobility and over simplified game just isn't NBA quality. I can see maybe someone like the Hawks getting him in 2nd rnd? In not sure

    I really hope that NBA Peeps are not expecting Edey to be anything like Wemby 😂. Please all #nba fans , Edey is 7'4" but he doesn't move or handle like Wemby and I guarantee that Edey will not stay healthy in the NBA. Hes going to be asked to do way more than what he's capable of. He'd be a better MMA fighter. Sorry Edey i do appreciate your achievements but i just haven't seen that X factor from u, YET.

      What are you talking about? He missed 1 game in college from illness 😂
      Nobody is expecting him to be Wemby.
      Horrible take

      @@MAXIMUSWE hi mate, appreciate the reply. I didn't explain properly. I maybe should of gone for a Sengun ceiling and Boban I'll floor. Are U worried about Edeys lack of quickness and agility? He's a great College baller and I wish him the best

    I'd stay as far away as possible from that dude. This guy is soft af even in today's NBA. I wouldn't even entertain taking him in any lottery spot.

      Yeah I don’t think a team will take him in the lotto. Hes a guy you take a little later to come off your bench and give teams a different look

      Soft af?
      Tell me you haven't watched him play without saying "I haven't watched him play"... Lol

      Not soft at all. You’ve either not watched him or are a hater from IU

      Hes not soft at all , in fact his game is more physical than most...lol
      He onky missed one game of college basketball because of illness.
      Do you people just come in the comments and make shit up?
