What team should draft Zach Edey? Let us know down below

  • @actrade1

What many non-basketball people don’t understand about Zach edey is we really don’t know how big of a defensive factor he can be because Purdue will not let him get in foul trouble and challenge the rim. Put him on an NBA team and tell him zach we need 20 minutes. Don’t worry about foul trouble block every shot you can And it may be a whole different kettle of fish

Well his biggest drawback as a prospect is easily his defense because while maybe he is reserving himself on that end it is undeniable that he is a defensive liability. Zach struggles deeply in p&r against D1 guards. He is slow footed, slow to react, slow off the ground, not mobile in general laterally, even blocking shots his timing isn’t amazing and vertically he doesn’t jump very high. In the NBA where NBA level guards exist Zach will be put in the pick and roll every time down the court and it is either an easy blow by or a middy or a floater. Imagine Brook Lopez a very solid shot blocker and paint defender, but in the pick and roll he is torched. Where Zach can hopefully get that back is on offense. Although number 1 he has to work on setting better screens with that big of a frame you need to set bigger screens, number 2 his footwork needs to improve as he is a post player and that reliance on his left shoulder turn and hook, dominates now in college but bigger stronger more talented NBA bigs will take it away and force him to do something else. I doubt he will be a good 3 point shooter however I have strong faith he could develop a mid range as his ft% is solid and that’s usually a good indicator. So defense he will never be amazing, and on offense he has to work on better screens, footwork, and at the very least a mid range jump shot.

Personally, if any NBA team ignores his trajectory of improvement, I think they'll regret not grabbing him in the first round. He came in as the 440th ranked prospect and 3 years later was the Natl player of the year in everyone's assessment. He'll generate fan interest and that will bring in money to his team. And he'll develop his game to match what's needed in the NBA. The guy is determined, skillful, and he's got the track record. I think he'll wind up being an All Star at some point in his career. I’ll bet my mortgage he will never make an all star game. Idc how hard he works he’s not going to stop being slow footed and not agile. The guy isn’t even an elite defender or shot blocker outside of direct contests. He’ll score 8-10 points a game in the nba off the bench against other teams second units but his game isn’t very translatable hard work or not. Tbh he doesn’t really even have a great offensive post game. 20 years ago he’s a lottery pick though.

The NBA also knows that doesn't make sense. 3 pointers and the ability to dribble drive occasionally? Yup, but that's also not something they need him to do in college. There are videos of him knocking down three pointers consistently in warm-ups, so the potential is there.

In college, there’s maybe three 7-footers that are even remotely mobile. In the NBA, there’s a ton of them. He would get shut down real quick by Giannis or Victor. Lopez and Jokic would shut him down too. ~7ft guys are pretty common at center, so if Steven Crowl can hold him off in the paint, he won’t stand a chance against a real top tier big guy.

Depends on the team and their timeline. I think Edey can come in and be an incredible player, but he has a 3-5 year window to win a ring before age and size become problems. Like Yao Ming, the man’s knees and back were shot by the time he retired. He worked hard to be as good as he was with that body.
If I’m a team without a good 5 or need a backup 5 and an insurance policy against other big men (think Hack a Shaq for those Wemby/Chet/Joker players) then I’m taking Edey asap. Or trading whatever I need to. He has the chance to be something special but he needs real playing time and shot attempts, which is a lot to ask for if you’re not Joker/Wemby type outside players too.

There’s a lot of hype around the top French prospects in this year’s NBA draft, but be cautious. Remember last year’s French bust at the 5th pick? It feels like their home country might be inflating their draft stock.
If you're a GM, don’t fall for the media buzz. Here are five underrated players who deserve your attention:
Matas Buzelis: Versatile forward with high basketball IQ.
Zach Edey: Dominant center with size and strength.
Robert Dillingham: Dynamic guard with playmaking and scoring skills.
Nikola Topić: Talented international guard with all-around game.
Steven Knecht: Sharp-shooting wing who plays solid defense.

We have to view Eddy is having a Giannis-like impact on offense and potentially being 75-85% of Gobert on defense where he can defend the inside with his size and length but need help on drop coverages.
I guarantee you that if you took away Jokic's three point shot and reduced his assist rate in half, he'll still be a force to reckon with. Don't overthink it

So many people commenting here not on the state of the game as it stands. I am not a huge Curry fan but can say that his style of play was so shell shocking teams simply could find no answer, it created an absolute match up nightmare faciliating the rest of the players around Steph. What you have to realize with Zach is he is a monster offensive weapon that can be totally unstoppable meaning a mathup nightmare which in turn will trump what some will be concerned about with him on the defensive side. There will have to be a player on the court to deal with Edey who will not be a capable offensive player.
