    Just wanted to say, thank you for your service to our country. I saw your "The Story" video and man Tino, things sure are getting out of hand as far as everything being politicized. When someone with your background is being harassed in that manner, there can only be one reason. You were spot on, we have to learn all military history because there are many lessons to learn that we'll surely need in the near future. Comments we turned off on that video, so I posted here. I can imagine why. Thanks again. For your service and for seeking the truth of the past. Cheers 🍻

    i still find it absolutely staggering so much tunnel was dug without any signs of concrete or reinforcement to back up tunnels already dug - today it be madness to dig anywhere without lining what is done behind you in order to provide a safer retreat in case of fall ins etc - ok so it was different times back then etc, but in these tunnels its not always easy to define direction and slopes, how each tunnel relates to the others surrounding it and how they might have worked together - the size of them in their current state suggests nothing more than access tunnels - if there were equipment at one side or the other, passing by might still be a squeeze - and it might also suggest that while the Germans in WWII were the Concrete Kings experimenting with all kinds of mix, the supply from Herr Speer and alike must of been way off compared to records as you often say
    PS. i enjoyed your previous video, i think its fair to say we all make silly mistakes from time to time, and sometimes they had their reasons for being, there will always be those who have to poke and prod at mistakes, when a mans maracas are big enough, it takes a real man to stand up and admit his error, still i enjoyed the content and understand what the aims were, you have skills and you are a sensitive guy at heart, i think it be fair to say all your followers will still enjoy what you do, even if in 20 30 years you stand up and say, i might have got that bit wrong, we are with you all the same

      These tunnels were likely dug by slave labor, so the SS cared little whether anyone was killed in a collapse.

    • @patchmack4469
      @patchmack4469 2 роки тому +1

      @@judyhoskins3995 yep i know that, that's not what i was getting at - my thoughts are, they have the task of digging the tunnels and have the slave labour, but nothing was ever finished either due to short or no supply - any collapses at the time would have been cleared because you couldn't leave a tunnel with what might be a huge speed bump, anything travelling on rails wouldn't work - but yes your quite right the SS wouldn't have cared less regarding deaths - Tinos videos serve well to remind all of the efforts made to dig these systems

    The nice thing about those different veins of rock with an internal explosion, would also be that only a lot of small bits would fall off. The rock is basically pre-fractured. A collapse could be completely cleared within a few days by a small non-specialized workforce with wheelbarrows, while a collapse in (for example) a granite tunnel would need specialized people able to cut big blocks into smaller chunks before they could be moved out. So it is a pretty much ideal tunnel for fabricating explosives in a wartime scenario with unreliable resources.

    The drill bit is hammered because the drill is a hammer drill that impacts the bit and rotates it a part turn each impact. The collet for the bit is large enough to accept the bit with some dirt or deformity. What's missing on the old bits is the center hole for air to pass into the bit and through small openings on the tip designed to clear the dust.

    Those definitely could be benchmarks. Surveying is necessary throughout excavation to align tunnels, check grade, and check coordinates. It's not about indicating location as that information can be referenced on a schematic. Rather, the benchmark is a set elevation point that you can measure from. An easy way to check is looking at each intersection or turn in the tunnels and checking for a benchmark. Theodolites use a telescope to aim at the rod so require a clear line of sight.

      yes exactly those were points where they took hight and direction readings

    • @sampointau
      @sampointau 2 роки тому

      Very true, they could've just simply had a nail in the exact centre and use it as a reference point for a theodolite to be established over. I once worked as a survey field hand for a maritime authority and we used nails when establishing a reference point but we also worked of brass nails set in sandstone and concrete which were over 100 years old, sometimes the "Pins" as we called them had the remains of a copper/brass or fibre disk that the points went through that generally were stamped with reference # or exact lat/long if on a defined reference grid square.

    • @sampointau
      @sampointau 2 роки тому

      The pins could also be in the bottom of a small pit, generally with a concrete cover, to reference for an exact height datum, especially when land or a road had to be levelled down to that datum or if the ground around the datum point had been raised. Sometimes we had to dig out the dirt and stuff that had washed into the pits so we could get exact height measurement to set up the theodolite tripod to the exact datum offset height.

    I doubt that anyone would have been making explosives in those tunnels, There is NOWHERE for any accidental blasts to go except along the tunnels. Messy!
    Globally, explosive manufacture is generally conducted in open spaces, in widely separated, often timber, structures, each with its own surrounding earth berm. It one building "goes up", it will (hopefully) not start a chain reaction.. Commercial fireworks manufacture is done the same way; well at least in the "West".
    Interesting rock there, as well. Early in the tunnel, the sandstone strata appear VERTICAL, which indicate that somewhere in the deep geological past, the entire piece of real estate was tilted / folded at a right-angle. deeper in, seems to be closer to horizontal. Because Sandstone is a sedimentary rock, formed from intermittently deposited layers of sand, it "cleaves" along those layer boundaries. Tunneling through horizontally-aligned sandstone poses greater risk of collapse, especially if there have been millions of years of water seepage from above.
