Hi lovely video many thanks, I spent a great deal of my childhood on dengmarsh , the gallerways and dungeon ness point fishing with my father I’m 70 now and still fishing, but as you know the fishing back then was wonderful, we had a caravan at winchelsea so every school holiday was on the beach, wonderful wonderful memories, tight lines Will
Couple of little stories of dungie my friend george fished it regularly in the 1970s... its heyday. But that was typical of those who could hit the DUSTBIN at dungie... if you couldn't reach it forget it, you'd only get the scraps and the odd fish... My second story is about why so many cod there were at Dungie and why they disappeared... Sorry but quite lengthy to explain... 1. Why so many. In the early 1940s ( 43 i believe, could be wrong). The winter was one of the worst on record the thames AND parts of the channel actually froze...!!!!😮 The exact same winter was had again in 1963.... Big deal i hear you say, well these two extreme winters were both responsible for the cod EXPLOSION can't call it anything less. These two winters were so cold it drove the baby cod predators out into much deeper water mackerel AND herring, thus allowing the cod young to survive in much greater numbers, thus growing on to maturity. This knock on effect lasted for decades well through the 50s / 90s.... sadly as technology improved on the trawlers it was only a matter of time before they were wiped out. The exact same thing happened of the Grand banks / Flemish cap of the eastern American seaboard. They too wiped out their golden goose.. all down the eastern coast fishing communities were wiped out... So why didn't they come back in the same numbers ?? When a mature female cod spawns she lays about 250,000 eggs ONLY 6 of those will get to breed themselves...!!!!! Yeah some stat hey ?. Add in factory ships that sit mid channel and are fed by smaller boats its a wonder they lasted as long as tgey actually did... But why don't they come back ? Simple two reasons one the boats have now more technology than the space programme and even if we did have cold enough winters and spawning was good they'd never make it to maturity.. last cold enough winter to my mind was 2010.... FOURTEEN years ago... This all came not from me but a very good friendbwho works as a fishery scientist for the government.....a very knowledgeable man... so foljs there you have it that's why those halcyon days of the 60s / 90s days will NEVER come back... 😢
Well done for sticking it out Matt, not the easiest of conditions the wind really wears you out. Really enjoyed seeing that small Bass, perfection in miniature.🎣🎣🎣👍
Remember coming down in the 50s with dad and the fishermen carrying the cod of the beach hanging on poles.Used to get really big channel whiting as well, happy days bait used to freeze up,ice forming on the line but great memories looking back.
Nice one Matt. That place can be one of the wildest points on the South coast, and not for the faint hearted when it gets stormy, and in fact quite dangerous. I've had some lovely fish there and even seen shoals of Harbour porpoises a couple of times, recently. Had some epic winter catches at night in the 80's/90's and even on the boats, back in the day. It used to be 'shoulder to shoulder' and definitely one of the best venues in the south, only beaten by the Dover breakwater, and Chesil on occasion. Good luck & keep em coming!
Awesome Matt, caught some good fish there, in my teens, caught bigger cod from old Hastings pier, Warrior square, and St Leonards Church 😊 Happy catching from Australia Nick 🇦🇺
I remember fishing near there with my uncle, he got a birdie and only went out about 25metres, 5 minutes later reels in a 6lb cod. That section is usually very good Bass spot on the flood, can be tough fishing, sometimes need a fixed grip nose wire weight to combat weed and tide and casting out upside. Thanks for the video very well done.
Only fished it the once about 5 years ago with my lad who was 8 at the time and his first sea fishing trip, had a few whiting throughout the day and then last cast a 7lb Bass all on one of the hottest days of the year. Got the lad hooked after that.
Got to love a session at Dungie. I've not managed to get out there for a couple of years so its nice to see you there buddy. Interesting to see a codling coming up and I cant believe you have broken a rod tip!!!!!!!
I horrified how the fishing there has deteriorated so drastically over the years, especially as you said that you'd done well! The last time I fished there would have been at the end of the 1950s, back then you'd have caught dozens of double figured cod, even better later on in the season. My local fishmonger or chippy always bought my surplus fish so that covered my costs. Sorry about the rod, if you're broken others your casting is definitely at fault, you're probably putting too much force in initially rather than building the power up. I've never seen anyone break a rod like that. It's an easy repair though, if the rod is hollow then just slide the broken end in from the thick end and epoxy it in place. It wont affect the rods performance at all. If it's a solid tip then either use it shorter or replace the whole top. Really love the videos they bring back so many happy memories. After the 1950s I gave up fishing for a while, in the 1960s I found other things to do!!
my god the last time I fished there was 40 years ago a 12hr session produced 23 codling, those days are long gone. its a bloody long trip from south Wales.
I still drive to Pembrokeshire every year for a holiday but always love my fishing there... scenery is better too... unfortunately it doesn't matter where you fish now the numbers are small as are the fish..poxy factory ships sucking the sea dry
Nice fishing there and still fishing there.our grand Lodge of England was the old church of dungeness there.the Buffs R.O.A.B number 9986 much respect to them.😊
please could you make a video on how to use a SPINNING ROD for bait fishing? Like light bait fishing for anything that bites, or wintertime fishing. thanks
Used to fish there in the 70’s as a teenager, was not very good at casting, the cod were 100+ yards out, caught a few but mostly dabs and the odd bass by the power station outlet. Boat fishing there was another story altogether. Captain Ginger Gary used to put us on big cod wrecks, using muppets and perks in the summer and up tiding in the winter, never had a blank and often dozen or more big cod to 30 LBS, double figure bass, turbot and tope, sole and place.
Nice one Will...I remember angling competittors, back in the late 70's, walking back with their catch after a competition along the promenade at Lee on Solent...Cod they had to lift that measured from their hips to their feet !!! Gone, long gone those days. Here on the the flat sands of the Normandy beaches, its mullet on bread or vary small bass on rubber lures. How far are you casting (approx in meters) with those rods ? Im a beginner, Im getting 60m over here with a 20 gram head weighted lure.

Went there twice last year early October we had 4 sizeble bass second time November dog fish every cast. But both times had the beach to our selves remember when you would struggle to get a spot. But good film
In the 60s I passed my driving test and one of the first things I did was take a drive down to Ramsgate with my girlfriend ( my future wife ) along with her sister and husband. Whilst we were there we saw people catching whiting from the promenade I thought that is something I must have a go at.my then future brother-in-law said the he had been to Dungeness before and you could catch cod there.being only 17 I had no chance of buying a sea fishing rod but being a practical lad I was able to convert an old solid fibreglass rod with the help of a broom handle into something that to me looking like what I thought a beach rod looked like. I was able to buy a cheap multiplier. Practicing in a field and after multiple birds nests and burnt thumbs it was time to have a go. The point was the place to go every body said so that’s where we headed my girlfriend and her sister carrying the sandwiches and flasks my future brother-in-law and me carrying our rods and homemade tackle boxes the beach was full of other anglers with hardly a gap for us to fish in but we managed to squeeze in somehow. We had been there a while not catching anything and a big bloke with glasses wandered over and started to talk about fishing in general and that he knew some divers that had been diving off Dungeness and they had told him that the sound of all the leads and tackle hitting the water made a horrible lot of noise and it’s a wonder the fish stay in the area. He looked at my home made rod and said with a smile on his lips he would like to see it with a ten pound cod on the end of the line.I realised some time later after reading an Anglers Mail and seeing a photo of the bloke on the beach that it was the legendary Leslie Moncreff. Over the following years we did catch several good cod the most memorable was when I caught five cod in an evening session with a total weight of 75 pounds
Last time I fished there I had 40+ schoolie bass, not my kind of thing but it still shows results if you’re lucky. Sadly the mackerel came through and a massive shoal was reduced to nil by the time they’d run the gauntlet.
@SaltwaterAngler Yes, big Springs and a long walk along the shingle though. Very close in and struggle to find decent sized ones. All returned to grow bigger and hopefully avoid the omnipresent trawlers.
I used to fish the diamond and go round to the point a low water when it was south westerly in winter caught my biggest cod 24 pounds on a whiting livebait those where the good old days
Thanks for the comment - I’m not that experienced in estuaries to answer that with any real Authority . Although I would say have the confidence that fish will find a good bait trail in some really murky conditions. Conditions also very dependent on state of tide.
Don't remember how many times I been there this year. The fish hut always got the best bait around Kent. Last time porpoises were all around me and I capsized my kayak when one of them popped up next to me. I have lost two rods, so went to shore picked up surf rods. As soon as I made the first cast a seal swim by few feet from us parallel to the beach and he was looking at us with a face like "You ain't gonna catch anything today" 😂. It was like a zoo.
