Glad you pointed out to listen to body. Last spring I did too many reps one particular day with a style I knew didn’t feel right. Spent the next month nursing tendon issues in the forearm. D’oh.
I’ve switched so many times, but when i first started playing i had a kind of sling putt from my side with lots of spin. I could hit putts from 70 feet quite often. After 2 years of playing i’ve brought it back. I’m way more accurate now. And when I’m on, i feel unstoppable.
I've morphed into a spin putter, and have been experimenting with a forward stance vs a straddle putt. Haven't come to a conclusion but straddle spin putts seem to be my calling. Thanks for the video!
Well done, I spin-putt for my current skill (beginner) it makes me able to use the training done when putting also for shorter approach. But this video tells me to learn a push-putt to either use as the main one, or for days when the spin-putt seems more off and the length is more important to save strokes, hence the push would be the better one for me probably... Thanks for your magic power of simplifying ;)
I’m glad you made this video. I’ve been trying each out but feel that the spush works best for me. I lean more push after watching one of your other videos (missing right a lot) and try to adjust my nose angle (after hitting the bottom of the basket). Thanks for the advice Scott!
Totally agree with this. Don’t let anyone tell you how to putt, as it’s slightly different for everyone. You can get small tips or watch pros for tips, but you have to figure out what works best for you. If you can turbo putt for 90%+ anywhere in circle 1, then do it, and don’t worry about what anyone tells you. I wouldn’t recommend all turbo, but you do you!
Very informational again Scott. I have all of those putting styles, thankfully. It's my only saving grace in my poor driving rounds on league day. Lol. True student/teacher of the game, appreciate you bud.
Thank you. Been playing a year after coming from ultimate. It only makes sense to me to practice all putting styles. Maybe settle on a preferred putt but you need to be flexible and accommodate any situation you need to putt in. Great vid!
Excellent description of the three types and uses. I'd love to see how you handle those longer shots like maybe 60+ feet. Where ever your normal putt doesn't have enough reach. Mine is more like 40+ feet and have a lot of room to grow.
Push putters will have less 3 putts while spin putters will have more C2 makes. Personally I am a combination. I live in Kansas and needed the extra spin in the wind.
After WAY too many years, I've finally come to the conclusion that I am a push putter up to about 12 feet, spin-putt to about 35, and spush to just about C2. After that, it's just turn and chuck. I have ZERO jump-putt ability.
I would argue the push is more complicated because at some point you have to switch styles for long shots which means you aren’t repeating the same shot as often which would have to make it harder. Also the fact that the wind is tough on push putters and they end up spushing or die if it’s breezy. No argument that there are successful push putters maybe the argument is they are successful in spite of the fact they are doing it the harder way in terms of simplicity. Sure the mechanics are simpler but if you end switching on a third or more of your putts that seems like keeping track of more anyway.
I had a bit of an eureka moment while trying to figure out my putt recently. I used to be fairly good at putting, but somehow is just lost that feeling and my putts have been awful for a while. Then I tried to start from scratch and rebuild my putt. I tried everything and saw what worked and what didn't. I did what you suggest and figured out what feels natural and comfortable to me. Push putting for instance feels really annoying. At one point I started paying real close attention to my footwork and all of a sudden my putts were going straight and with plenty of power to reach the basket from circle two. I stand in a stagger stance, weight evenly distributed over both legs, then bend both my knees with a bit of my weight shifted to the back leg and then push of hard with just my back leg. I don't even pay that much attention to my arm. I pull it into my body just a bit and then just straighten it out towards the basket. All the power is coming from my legs, all that my arm has to do is aim toward the basket. I used to really curl my arm into my body and used a lot of elbow and wrist, and this caused me to miss right and left a lot. So far this new technique has been giving me very consistent performance.
thanks for this Scott. I have tried to do the push putt because that was what I was taught. I had a hard time from even 6m to get it with enough power, so invariably I yanked it right. Changed to the spush and I am doing so much better. Still enjoy watching those quirky techniques though :) (Paige, Matty O). Look forward to seeing your main putting style on tour.
I'm a beginner, but I often go to a push putt when I want the disc to flop and stop in case I miss, while if I spin putt and I'm off I generally have a longer come back putt or get in trouble due to a "death" putt situation, etc.. When I push putt though I straddle (Kevin Jones-ish). Neither one feels any worse than the other, then again maybe I'm not listening hard enough.
I keep my wrist rather rather locked for my spin putt, and keep my hand at noon on the disc. The only moving parts are my elbow and fingers. I generate the spin from the fingers, the underside of the first knuckle of the index finger digs into the microbead of my putter.
On my own without instruction I found a stagger stepped spush putt, feels awesome, I'm super new so I'm not discouraged but I smack the band often in my putt practice! I think it's good cause I'm close. Thanks for the vid.
So good, Scott! You came and did a clinic in my area (at Kaposia in MN), but I wasn’t able to make it out. We’re in Dallas now. Any chance you’ll be doing clinics during the Texas swing this year? :)
I think (my personal opinion) that learning to push putt in C1 and C2 consistently and spin putting outside the circle is ideal. Only time I would spin putt in the circle is if (like mentioned in the video) there’s a big head wind.
I'm mostly a spush guy. But I think I might try more of a push putt on shorter putts. Getting a consistent release is key for me. Always gotta remind myself to give it some pop, and shake hands with the basket.
I spush putt but had a bad habit of relying on hyzer to lofting it in. They always ended high right or low left. I have to keep reminding myself to shoot AT the basket and just let it float in.
Thanks or another nice video Scott, I'm wondering how the straddle put stanceworks into this. I guess you could use it with either of the three styles you described but I'd like to hear more of your thoughts so this. Perhaps you've already covered in the video that I have not yet discovered.
I have felt the push putt and the last putt or a similar putt that has full spin putt with a push put would work best. Not the spin put as much but then I suck at a full spin putt.
Great explanation Scott. I also watched a video on popping the palm at the same time as follow through with the palm up. I tried it and found a bit more spin and power on the push put. I noticed in your class that you used a palm pop to pass the disk back during the 20' putting lessons. You had an amazing amount of power using your palm. Is that something you incorporate in your push putts?
I know you're trying not to make it too complicated (which you are doing better than anyone tbh) but I was thinking about your comment about the wrist geometry during a spin putt. Your hand is moving around the disc for a portion of the putt so the change in angle in the wrist does not change the direction of the disc if you mistime it slightly. Of course a late release will at some point still yank it to the right. Did that make sense? I'll happily draw you a diagram if needed. I think it's a point missed by many which then moves them (and by "them" I'm including myself) towards push putting.
@@ScottStokelyDG Now I'm just impatiently posting the video response here as well :) ua-cam.com/video/LRXOR8MsPJw/v-deo.html Hope it makes sense. I really do think a lot of beginners are missing out on spin putting. And MAN, I'm not much of a talker but putting together coherent sentences in front of a camera is haaard! XD
Mr. Stokely, I love your videos and always and enjoy watching them for free and can’t wait to support you on tour. I have learned so much from your videos and am just putting that out as a disclaimer. However, I think there may be one thing you missed in this video, but there’s probably a reason you didn’t mention this so please inform me why. That is, a push or a spush putt will likely have a more parabolic motion, letting it come into the basket which allows it to stick more often. Also it will generally not miss as far away as a spin putt might. Of course there are exceptions to this and that may be specific to me but I thought it could be something to mention. Thanks!
Push or Spush don't automatically have an arc until you at a greater distance. Since shorter putts are far more important than longer putts, I don't find it to be so much of a factor when deciding which putt to use.
I love turbo putting! It's my primary method of putting. I guess it's a spin put because once my arm is extended above my head, only my elbow and wrist have any movement at all. Do you find it to be viable or is it just a gimmick?
I remember these putting terms changing a bit with Dave Feldberg talking about it a while back, mostly the push putt replacing the lob. Eventually when sports science and kinesiology are more involved in DG the terms push and spin may be reevaluated. All putts spin and what we are calling a spin putt is actually a push, an extension of the arm motion vs flexion or think of doing a push up, you are pushing the disc away. In a Lift, Lob or "push" I believe it is flexion of the anterior deltoid or shoulder in a upward motion. What we use to call a lob putt was fine, but calling it a lift may also be more accurate, lifting the hand, arm or putter. A spush, well who knows lol, maybe simply a mix putt. Push, Lift or Mix
Beautiful explanation with trade-offs disclaimer. Scott, why do you think forehand putting isn't a thing? It is more challenging in close, clearly, however as the distance increases, say beyond 15 feet, it becomes relatively more and more accurate. Also it is possible to make the disc stall, with a strong wrist snap and nose up angle, taking away the danger of going past, even on long attempts? Your thoughts?
The reason sidearm putting is not viable is the inability to putt front your center. That's like throwing darts from way out on the side instead of aiming from the center.
Scott, thanks again for this super helpful video! How the two or three versions of putting differ when it comes to wrist release? I understand that in push putting you still add some spin to the disc. Is it same amount of spin from the wrist as in a spin putt, but the spin putt has more spin overall because elbow and wrist are in involved?
I use a push putt 16 ft or less. I use the spush putt 17-32 ft & a spin putt outside circle or more. Is that weird? One gives me more distance than another & at a certain distance is just feels more comfortable.
yeah i'm in a sort of flux... not sure which way to go right now i'm trying to copy McBeths spush thing, doesnt really feel right. its funny i've always thought push putting was the simplest and best for normal conditions... but watching Josh Anthon and Matty O with their spins... crazy how accurate they are in all conditions. hmmm
I have a question. I have seen this numerous times and have never heard anyone comment on it. Why do I see so many pros holding putters in their opposite hand while putting? Is there a balance technique or is it a comfort thing, or something else? Thanks!
When I practice putt I typically do it rapid fire while holding a stack of (10) discs. So holding another disc is replication of what I do in practice.

I have no idea why but I have like 5 putts that feel right but only 1 of them feels right from day to day and I’m very confused, and I was wondering if you knew how to help.
why choose? Started as spin putter and didn't try or knew what a push putt was but then when I did it felt good too...now is just putting in the practice (disclaimer I haven't tried push putts in the wind yet)....
I push putt because I can't spin put for shit, but I have a super short-range with my push putt. I make 25 foot putts 75 percent of the time but can't get a 30 foot putt to the basket.
I call my current putt I developed over the years a spinning push putt, in that I am 50/50 doing both spinning and pushing at the same time with full on spin the way a spin player would with a full push that is maybe not as deep as some push putters do but when I do push putt it is not as deep as you see all the pros do with the hand in lowest point to the knee, only doing that at my max distance with my putter, at 30---33 feet maybe 35 feet on a good day. There is also an odd single player on UA-cam who does this above over the head odd two hand putt from Michigan who in later videos began talking so fast I can't keep keep up with what he is saying so after a few years I had to drop his content. This putt is an odd spin putt, but he can do a push putt for further with a driving spin only for high winds. The other putt you never see from better players even those past Recreational level is, a shove putt. I had a putt like this as one I was trying a Basketball style stance with similar hand placement on the disc to a person doing a free throw on the disc with all shove and 0% spin from 2006 to 2009 and again when back in from 2015 to 2016. After or in mid 2016 is when I went to start to develop the main putting style I finally made and have used use the full thing since 2017/2018. This putt is odd in the since the other non disc throwing hand is doing a guiding track like some pros do with another putter/slow disc no more than 4 speed but sans the other putter/slow disc to do the tracking on the putter I am throwing since I have never had another putter in my hands when putting so it feels off to do the tracking hand with another putter but rather more correct as now an open hand thumb not over the disc, so I avoid gripping the disc as has happened before when doing this same putt and trying to track in the past prior to 2018/2019.
Sorry, this is long, but it explains as best I can my putting style I have used more recently. Yes, I track a bit more than others do with the disc on the side of the putter they are using to how I do with my open hand track. If I did not do my putt the way I did, I would be putting so slanted the disc is coming out at about 30 to 45 degrees from flat level ground.
I don't know who tf said to me that I have to putt so that I "paint the pole" as my spin putt started to miss. I started putting in practice for my putting and I messed up my putting style entirely. Dang it. Now I spush putt and I miss everywhere. I'll get it fixed, but dang if someone gave me better advice before.
I hate putting or more precisely putting with my body. I'm kind or natural spush with more push aspect like mcbeth, but Im just horrible at it whatever amount of practise I do. It is not even that this feels best style, it's just best of all the worst feeling styles. My body just hast been made to put and it is tremendously disencouraging towards whole sport.
Love your content but one of my biggest pet peeves is when people say "heighth" instead of "height". But you did pronounced "heights" correctly so I'm befuddled...
This is the clearest explanation I've heard of the difference between putting styles.

I am not a fan of turbo putting as your main method. It is definitely useful as a situational shot I classify as a Utility shot.
With putting, all ways are good, except the bad. Whatever gets the disc in the cage is correct.
: )
All my putts, no matter what style, go very high up in the air…
Practice finishing with your hand pointed at the basket not up in the air and that should help.
Thank you Scott!
