What Are Chipmunks Like as Pets - Do Chipmunks Hibernate - Life with Steve and Shannon Anderson

- What are chipmunks like as pets? Do chipmunks hibernate? Those excellent questions...
Robins have returned to Northern Ontario from their winter migration, which is a sure sign of Spring, and the pair that like to call our honeysuckle home have taken to their nest again.
Eastern Chipmunks, on the other hand, like to live alone in holes or burrows called dens. Chipmunks hibernate in winter, but they don't sleep all the way through the season. They retreat to their burrows but wake every few days, raise their body temperatures to normal, feed on stored food rather than fat reserves and, well, relieve themselves. But, as the warmer days of Spring arrive, they wake right up and come out looking for food.
And our back porch is full of little striped friends who are waking from their slumber! Chipmunks, by the way, make great friends and are very affectionate; however, as with any wild animal, it's best to enjoy their company outdoors.
But where is Chippits? I haven't seen her since last Autumn...
Come and watch with me to see if our little friend returns.

I love this video so much. I have a chipmunk in my yard that comes around every morning. ❤
Aren't they just the cutest, most wonderful critters?! I'm so glad that you have a friendly little one as well. :)
wow. How cute is that. Chippit remembered you... lol . Looks like you got yourself a pet.
Smart little critters, eh! I'm so happy Chippits came back. Best kind of pet for me - the kind that can look after themselves, lol! (Nothing against your pup - I love dogs, and yours is great! Guess I'm a chipmunk person at heart... does that make me a little nutty?) :)
@@SteveandShannonAnderson Ha HA ha ... A little? Sorry couldn't resist.. lol
@@RcNickster709 I just saw this and I would say the same thing then as now.... :P LOL!!
So cute the chipmonks Shannon thank younfor the video of them
These little guys bring me no end of pleasure, Richard. I'm glad that you enjoyed them with me! :) Blessings, brother!
LOL, Chippits is BACK!!! 😊 Yayayayayay....and my Sherona went out to feed him seeds in her stripey goodness clothes. Teeheehee....the chippy is striped and so are you!! 😆 What a fun video that was....you sure are a nature girl....butterflies, birds, chipmunks, hummingbirds....I think all of God's creatures love you. 😉 What a gorgeous day we had - God bless you Sherona..Air hugs 🤗
Maybe my stripes get me accepted into his little heart all the better? Hmmm... where are my stripey goodness pants? Lol!! :) God blesses me so much with all of these wonderful things -- oh! and don't forget those hummingbird moths!!! -- I am so glad I get to share them with you, Pumpkin! :) Air hugs and sunny days and all God's best blessings, my friend!
@@SteveandShannonAnderson Aww thanks Sherona, 💚🤗 Oooo I forgot to mention - your brilliant idea to get a close up shot of Chippits starting at 4:07 - did you see those cheek puff out when he was eating the seeds....ahhhmmmaazziing! 😮 LOL, at 5:20 now that hits the spot....handy to have back feet to scratch with. 😉
@@SusanMillard I didn't even know that I had the "scritchie" part until I watched the film!!! Lol! I love those cheeks of his, too. And the way he goes "boing boing boing" as he scampers away at the end! :)
This is so precious, you are so lucky ❤️
I really am blessed to enjoy these little guys! Thank you, Abby. :)
I miss my Chippy friend
I totally hear you, Megan - I miss my Chippits, too! Here's to seeing them again in the Spring... :) Shannon A.
@@SteveandShannonAnderson I thought Chippy went into hibernation a few weeks ago but then the weather warmed up again and I just happened to look out back and there he was looking at my window as if to say where's my nuts? This year has been horrible for me first loosing my youngest son in January then October my last of my 3 brothers. Devastation beyond imagination. For some reason I came across Chippy then we became friends. I already made friends with Bunn Bunn and family. Some days they go to the buffet together lol! They are such sweet animals! I've been posting my pictures on Pixabay... pixabay.com/photos/chipmunk-rodent-eating-feeding-5733875/
@@MeganZopf Oh, Megan - I am so sorry for your loss. As if 2020 hasn't been difficult enough, you certainly didn't need those heart-rending situations as well... I have always believed and said that God will reach out to us in the ways that we will best understand and hear/see Him - be it in a phone call from a friend, a dream, a verse of Scripture that suddenly makes sense, a song that comes to mind... or yes, even in a chipmunk that should have been in hibernation. :) To me, that is God saying to you, "Even when you can't see Me, know that I am here. Even when everything and everyone else tells you that I am not around, know that I am right here with you." -- I would absolutely _love_ to see the pictures of your little friends!! I will be sure to check out the Pixabay pics (great site, btw). Hugs and blessings and prayers, Shannon A.
Gorgeous! Have a great day my friends and thanks for the great video. 😊👍🎸🔥
Thank you, GH! Love these little guys. :) Blessings!
Now that I have moved back to UK I miss my Ontario chipmunk friends
I miss the little guys when they aren't here to visit over a couple of days - I can totally empathize with you, Yogbarog! I've got a real soft spot for my little Chippits - she's just so special. I'm extra glad to have been able to share this video with you. :) Shannon A.
You can feel free to come see mine!! I live in Ontario too😘
@@WhiteChipmunks Aren't they just the most special little creatures, "White Chipmunks?!" I miss them now that they are hibernating again... Ah well! We've got our pictures and videos and memories to keep us until Spring! :)
Steve and Shannon Anderson indeed!! Mine are indoors yes but they should be old enough to have babies in spring (crossing my fingers.) Thank you both very much for subscribing! I try very hard to bring consistent funny, educational or just plain interesting videos! I hope you will enjoy the Halloween one I’m working on😃
My 3 chipmunks chase each other constantly outside . They're so territorial about who gets fed first . They're just mean .
They really can be absolute little bums with each other at times... If you can put a pile out for each of them, they start to learn their own spots (my Mom is an expert with this!). -- Thanks for sharing, Ringo Bingo! :)
These little animals are really excellent, great video !!
They really are fun little critters! Thanks, Pascal! :)
@@SteveandShannonAnderson 😊👍
They sing a lot just ask Alvin! Very nice video! God Bless
See now, I'd be out on a quiet winter's day, and thought I could hear some music coming from underground somewhere... this explains everything!! LOL!! :) Thanks - and blessings!
I love this so much, this is so wholesome. ❤️❤️☺️ the sweet way he makes her laugh and you can tell he brings so much joy to her makes me smile so much. ❤️💙
Thank you so much, Cristas! :) You're absolutely correct - she brings me so much joy!! Chippits is such a funny little sweetheart! I loved every day that she (I discovered later that Chippits is a girl, lol!) came to visit (she's hibernating now) and would look for her if she wasn't around. I can hardly wait for Spring to arrive and we haven't even had Winter in Ontario yet, _lol!_ -- So glad to have brought a smile to your face, Cristas. Have yourself a wonderful day/rest of the week, Shannon A. :)
That is sooo cool. I love the trust he has & thank you for being so kind to animals.
Chippits is a special little chipmunk, that's for certain. :)
I'm so glad you enjoyed this video with me. And thank you! :) Lol!
This was so relaxing and calming, a million thanks , your in my prayers
You are so welcome and thank you so much, Rick! :) God bless and keep you.

Chippits strikes again!!! :) Air hugs, Sarah!
@@SteveandShannonAnderson Next time, I think Steve should leave the screen door open :) Just sayin! Chippits is movin in!
@@e.l.2963 LOL!! I like the way you think, Sarah B! --- Hey!! You changed your name! :) I like it, too!!
@@SteveandShannonAnderson Thanks Shannon! Yes I changed it because I am realizing now that I don't want to just make videos on learning Chinese. I have too many ideas for videos in my head haha!
That chipmunk loves you 😊
She is my very special little friend, that is for sure! :)
@@SteveandShannonAnderson absolutely 💯. I know how you feel . I think these animals watch us more than we watch them . That’s how I met chipmunk who would watch from the woodpile so I started leaving nuts 🥜 and the rest happened
Ours have a tendency to listen for the screen door and then come out. I also have a plastic cup that I will fill seeds and give a little shake and they will come running immediately! They do listen and they do watch and they are the best! :)
i only just recently befriended two chipmunks, Sven and Fenton(i tell them apart by Fentons long, thin tail, and Sven's pea-sized scar on the top of his head, along with his very short tail only a few inches long which leads me to wonder if he made a narrow escape from a predator). over a few weeks i gained their trust slowly and at their own pace. Sven is quite shy, so the furthest i got with him was for him to be able to let his guard down when near me and slowly eat his way towards me and then eat out of my hand. the first time he ate from my hand, he sucked up a few seeds before realizing "wait a minute! there's a human underneath these seeds! wtf wtf wtf wtf wtf wtffff!" and the poor guy jumped about a foot up in the air and scrambled away so fast that he fell over, to which i will be going to hell for laughing at.
fenton was easy to befriend. ate from my hand no problem and allowed some subtle scritches on the shoulder, i even caught him playfully attacking the puff balls that hang on the sides of my slippers. i was working on the next step of getting him up to my lap.
but, Sven has been missing for about two weeks now, and fenton whom visited several times a day has been nowhere to be seen for days now. hibernation usually starts in november, but i had not taken into consideration that the wisconsin weather would be cold enough by now for them to call it a season and settle into their dens. and as silly as it sounds, i'm devastated. i assumed i had at least a couple more weeks with them, and my heart is broken that i never got to say goodbye, or give them extra special treats as a parting gift. i never thought i'd be so emotionally invested in these little guys. all that gives me comfort now is knowing that i gave them more than enough food during our bonding sessions to last them a long time, and that i hopefully made their winter preparation less stressful
I can totally relate, Lindsey. We live in Ontario and, when the nights got a bit cooler a couple of weeks back, my little ones started disappearing.
Chippits is my extra special little girl. She has a little nick out of her ear; hence her name. And her tail is shorter, so I have a feeling she went through something as well. Every year, when she goes to bed, I pray that she will come back as she is already at least 4 years old (that's how long she's been visiting me). Staying in my backyard probably keeps her a bit safer; however, wild chipmunks don't generally live past 5 at the most...
Timothy and Timidy - both shy, with one boy and one girl - were here for a bit - that's them in the photo. Timidy moved away, but Timothy came up until about 4 days ago, and then disappeared too. He's younger than Chippits; he may even be her offspring.
These little guys _do_ become part of our lives! I take videos and then get pictures from them so that I can remember them when they go to hide away until Spring. Oh, how I miss them too!!!
But yes, you have certainly helped to provide for them for the winter. That gives us such a special feeling, eh!! And, you watch: Sven and Fenton (love their names!) know who you are now and they _will_ come back when they venture out again - I promise!!! :)
I absolutely love your stories about the little guys - thank you for sharing them with me! :) Hugs, Shannon A.
I am retired and am a hobby machinist. Every morning when I go into my shop I leave some roasted peanuts that I have cracked the shells on and put them on my stone wall just outside the shop door for my little chipmunk friend. It doesn't take long for the nut meat to disappear and only the shells remain. Later in the spring when the weather warms up I leave the shop door open and put the nuts on the floor beside my computer table and my friend comes right into the shop to scavenge the food supply. If I should forget the morning treat it sits on the wall outside the shop door and complains loudly letting me know it is about. I have gained enough trust from the little creature that a rub down it's back is totally accepted. It seems to have accepted me as it's friend and there is a scuffle when another chipmunk comes around though some are brave enough to sneak some of the nuts. Well it is the first of January here in Massachusetts and only the red and gray squirrels are about so it is quiet here and I am just waiting for my friend to return in the spring. Thanks for the video.
Dick B. USA
Thank you ever so much for sharing your story with us, Dick! :)
It's much too cold here for our chipmunks now, as well; so, we're just enjoying a red squirrel who has made our home (specifically, the attic of our detached garage) it's home. Peanuts out of the shell are on the menu for my winter friend and, yes, I hear about it when there isn't a handful on the back porch waiting.
No one else would believe the personalities these little guys have! I do miss my stripey friends. I get to pet them but the squirrel and I are, perhaps, a little leery of one another. I've seen him chase my chipmunks and he's not so nice about it. Oh, but he is lovely against the snow. :)
I'm waiting for Spring as well, heralded by spring peepers (frogs) in the back pond and Chippits (my extra special chipmunk with a little chip out of her ear) climbing the screen door to peer inside at me... We're so glad that the videos of our friends can keep you company until all of our little rascals return. :) Blessing, Shannon A.
Yea, the gray squirrels have gotten into our house attic and chewed up things we had in storage there. "Store up not your treasures on earth"
@@richardboucher6904 "...where moth and rust (and squirrels) destroy..." :)
You can build a insulated box and put it over their hole in the winter. I would lift it up and put nuts and cut up apple in it. They would venture out and retrieve them.
That is a really awesome idea! Mind you, we get a lot of snow around here in Ontario.. I may not be able to find the box after a really good snowfall, lol! :) Thank you for sharing.
That's awesome....I have a couple that let me feed me too.....I love it!!
There really is something so exciting and special about wild chipmunks coming to visit like that, isn't there, Joey! :) I'm so glad that you get to experience it too!!!
Awee too cute 🐿 new supporter here hope we can stay connected 🤝👍🏼
I'm so glad that you like my little friends too, Marilyn! They bring me so much pleasure, it's fun to share it around. :) And *welcome to the Anderson family!* It's great to have you with us. :) God bless and keep you, Shannon.
What is cuter than a chipmunk??!!
Ummmm.... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! :)
Have you seen choo choo s story channel . He s got the chipmunk thing down . Opens his door and they come to eat , lol .
No, I haven't seen that; however, I will definitely have to check it out. Thank you so much for letting me know! :)
@@SteveandShannonAnderson that’s where I copied what he does , and you . I think anyone who sits outside with their iPad can hopefully have a chipmunk or squirrel closeby . I’m in Ohio . We have decent wildlife and our first black bear last year . I think he went into meander reservoir area where the drinking water is protected and the land is so good . We used to sneak in there back in the high school days .
It is my personal opinion that God made Chipmunks to be our buddies, LOL! Why not?! And thank you so very much for the compliment about watching our videos to learn how to get your own chipmunk buddy! That really puts a smile in my heart. :)
As for the bear, that is really neat! Black bears have their own territories; the females tend to range between 8 and 20 miles whereas the males kind of overlap between the territories of several females.. all things depending, you might see that bear again!
It is so wonderful that you have such a beautiful and protected spot for the Wildlife there.. as well as for the high school students, lol! :)
My chipmunk chases the other ones away , lol . I toss them all a handful of peanuts . Chipmunk needs to learn to share and not be so greedy . Today was the first day he took a peanut from my hand
Chipmunks can be very territorial, that is for sure. And that would be so very exciting, that that little one took a peanut from your hand for the first time! Right on, lol! Thank you so much for sharing that with us! :)
@@SteveandShannonAnderson thanks . I wonder if it’s male or female . I m thinking male . There’s a couple vids . I do love my little chipmunk .
I admit that I discovered which of mine was a male and which was a female when they ran up the screen door and peeked in.. otherwise, I don't know if I could tell you how to tell the difference! LOL! :)
So, did you ever answer the question, “do chipmunks hibernate “?
That is a very honest question, thank you! My apologies, itaintmebabe99: the video hints at the fact that they do, but the direct answer is down in my description box. Chipmunks _do_ hibernate in winter, _however_ they don't sleep all the way through the season. They retreat to their burrows but wake every few days, raise their body temperatures to normal, feed on stored food rather than fat reserves and, well, relieve themselves. But, as the warmer days of Spring arrive, they wake right up and come out looking for food! :) Thank you again for asking - hope this helped! Shannon A.
Chipmunks make great pets and musicians.
_Lol!!!_ Totally agree, PR! :)
They should never be"pets"
I can totally understand your comment. I think I would call these guys more my friends than my pets. Although I used it in the title, pets would definitely be a misnomer here. :)
