Thanks to the native guy with the war pick in the lower part of the screen at the 1:48 mark to make me laugh at the start of such a serious fight and after such impressive speech from two great actors.
It took me various times watching this battle to realize that they actually are wearing uniforms. The various Irish Gangs have their own uniform but wear red. The Natives wear blue and pretty much the same.
It's a known fact that Rome has never smelled very good. Throughout history, as Rome developed, more and more human and animal waste flowed through the cities. The vast sewer system carried it away but did little to prevent the smell. This led to Roman, and later Italian, citizens losing their sense of smell. They tried to get it back by developing new fragrances and even putting excessive garlic, onion, and other seasonings in their food, but the smell was always too pungent and strong. This is why Bill "The Butcher" Cutting has such a problem with Roman Potpourri.
the music score playing as Bill the Butcher slowly walks through the crowd taking his time killing people was great acting by Daniel Day Lewis almost as if he was slowly biding his time to get near Priest Vallon but the way he stabbed him the second time showing no remorse . definitely a cold blooded kill along with how they took ears and noses as trophy's but a lot of respect by the Butcher not letting anyone touch Priest Vallon saying he'll cross over whole in honor..
I was only 13 when this movie came out but my mother did go see it in theaters, i think she thought it was going to be a historical fiction/romance movie, kind of like titanic. She also hates violent movies. I eventually saw it when I was in high school and asked her, "So what did you think of the movie when you saw it in theaters?" "It was the bloodiest movie I have ever seen in my life."
I just noticed the Bill the Butcher threw another man at Priest Vallon to distract him and open him up to his attack. He may have won the fight, but the kill wasn’t as straight up and honorable as he makes it out to be later.

Good movie overall! Wahi' Valleys
Yes, it is Medieval, like in Braveheart or in Antiquity like in Gladiator. These less privileged people are still just as barbaric. Their overall living standards are the same. It remains the same today.
probably because they never had enough time to shoot multiple scenes with the blood or the budget for it or even fe't that they needed it to be gore like that
I doubt there was ever a gang war that looked like this. Simply because if there's going to be that many of them on both sides for a planned battle they going to build cheap Shields or fight with Spears. If either side had a predominance of shields or spears they would have wiped out the other side.
I agree. All those stupid masks and costumes do nothing but impede you in a fight. People'd be carrying shields and wearing homemade body armour in a brawl like this.
@@ThisHandleWasTheOnly1Available and body armor does not have to be fancy or expensive for a fight like that. Leather has been very effective for many centuries
True. Thou if you think back to the Civil War, Men would line up in stright rows and take a shot at each other before reloading. No shields or barries between them. Following the code of the "Fair Shot". Some of the Men here would have been raised in that mine set, not to mention would view armor as unsportsmen.
@@KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven I think the Irish would have constructed Shield because they had a living tradition they inherited of using Targe and sword. Trage being a small round Shield. Then they would have lined up in formation which would make a lot of sense for concentration of force.

A bit of dash
The mighty McGloin almost bested by a sprat.
Dead Rabbits was such an awesome name for a gang.
imagine being a cop seeing this go down and just being like "nope" and walking away
After about three seconds nobody would be able to tell who;s on which side lol.
Lmfao 😂😂💀💀
Thanks to the native guy with the war pick in the lower part of the screen at the 1:48 mark to make me laugh at the start of such a serious fight and after such impressive speech from two great actors.
It took me various times watching this battle to realize that they actually are wearing uniforms. The various Irish Gangs have their own uniform but wear red. The Natives wear blue and pretty much the same.
And ironically, blue is the national colour of Ireland.
@@JimmySteller I would have figured green for Ireland, red for Northern Ireland.
This is the 2nd time I've heard that Irish 🍀 accent of Liam Neeson since The Prayer for the dying.
The Grey.
He is Irish.... thats the way he speaks all the time
What accent do you want an Irish actor playing an Irish man to use?
When I was a kid in the 80’s, this is exactly what our town wide snowball fights seemed like.
a saga only starts when Liam Neeson drops his sword for the last time
It's a known fact that Rome has never smelled very good.
No videogames, no smartphones, no TV just people having wholesome fun back then.
Everyone gangsta until the Priest pulls out a sword and says “Prepare to receive the true lord!”
Gangs of New York is criminally underated movie ever by Martin Scorsese
I can't believe how scary John C Riley looks in this lineup.
The Butcher is one of the best characters ever put on film.
😐
They are doing a remake in 2024 where Bill the Butcher is Transgender!
Bill The Butcher was a real life historical figure.
@@danielbrown3461 That joke's even funnier the 46th time, say it again
Amazing acting from Sean Bean in this scene, pulling off 63 different deaths in under 3 minutes
I was only 13 when this movie came out but my mother did go see it in theaters, i think she thought it was going to be a historical fiction/romance movie, kind of like titanic. She also hates violent movies. I eventually saw it when I was in high school and asked her, "So what did you think of the movie when you saw it in theaters?"
"It was the bloodiest movie I have ever seen in my life."
I like the guy at 1:50 who throws down his axe at the very beginning of the battle to ineffectively jump on a dude.
" May the Christian lord guide my hand "
What a great sentence from Ser day Lewis 🔥
3:27 that move where he tears the guys cheek off is fucking crazy.
The old fish hook. That cheesy movie with DiCaprio shows the same move, but the opponent submits. Far and Away
We need Bill The Butcher more than ever
No man touches this man. That battle epic.
2:33 My wife when I come home late after a couple of beers with the boys.
Such a powerful movie. Everyone plays their role So Well. A graphic violent movie also. 👍👍👍👍
I guess Liam Neeson has yet to have his particular set of skills.
Well, that escalated quickly.
I saw that. Rick killed a guy...

@@Unvaccinated69 Anchorman right ? .... Well cool, thanks.
One of the best example of 00's culture. Everything tried to look like a music clip or a videogame cinematic.
"prepare to receive the true lord!"
My favorite line in the whole movie.
The guy that got fish hooked at 3:27 and his cheek ripped open.. I'd rather get stabbed then go through that
What about getting your foot and leg broken by Monk's shillelagh?
I just noticed the Bill the Butcher threw another man at Priest Vallon to distract him and open him up to his attack. He may have won the fight, but the kill wasn’t as straight up and honorable as he makes it out to be later.
That's the point. Bill is a hypocrite. He stabs Monk in the back, he rushes Amsterdam in the mist from behind to hamstring him, it's all cowardly moves from a guy who bitches about 'honour'.
That's the point, he's a hypocrite. An irredeemable and racist hypocrite who couldn't even live up to the standard he used to judge other people.
Aww it's true but "threw a man" (at another man) still has to move the needle on the Badass-O-Meter somewhere doesn't it?
He did that because he knew priest was stronger than him
I like the music in this fight🔥
“Do you have the sand…!?”
I love the beginning; 1860's trash talk. lol:)
I've watched this scene so many times, but for the first time I've noticed something odd. For so many old-school, hand-to-hand combat weapons, real "medieval" stuff, there is very little blood, and "Bill the Butcher" hacks away at men who aren't looking! He's Bill the Slacker. Good movie overall! Wahi' Valleys
Yes, it is Medieval, like in Braveheart or in Antiquity like in Gladiator.
These less privileged people are still just as barbaric. Their overall living standards are the same.
It remains the same today.
@@antonboludo8886 Neither of those movies are historically accurate.
@@TheThingInMySink Yes, of course. I know this.
BTW, what lives in your sink? LOL
probably because they never had enough time to shoot multiple scenes with the blood or the budget for it or even fe't that they needed it to be gore like that
@@TheThingInMySink These are civilians fighting and killing each other, not military. Very frightening.
Not to mention the bow and arrow. 19th century equivalent of the sniper.
True. Thou if you think back to the Civil War, Men would line up in stright rows and take a shot at each other before reloading. No shields or barries between them. Following the code of the "Fair Shot". Some of the Men here would have been raised in that mine set, not to mention would view armor as unsportsmen.
@@KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven
I think the Irish would have constructed Shield because they had a living tradition they inherited of using Targe and sword. Trage being a small round Shield.
The natives would have constructed Spears because that is what a musket with a Bayonet is after you fire it.
Then they would have lined up in formation which would make a lot of sense for concentration of force.
I liked the Butcher even though he was the "bad guy" I was rooting for him....
Gotta like it when a bad guy is so blatant you give him credit.
Who says he was the bad guy? Seemed to be a pretty decent guy for a power player. He took in and cared for/mentored orphans, tried to make sure people got fed, tried to keep false religion out of politics, fought literal degenerates. What did he do wrong?
he was the good guy... just defending his homeland
@@notme3686 The level of cringe here...

The battle score was so ahead of its time
This was the original “Boys in the hood”.
Imagine being in a good fight like that and having a flying witch ( or whatever the hell that was ) zip in and tear your ear off. That's not fair
Random reply. But took a class on Scorsese decades ago. Recalled that professor asked the class what the editing here and the flying woman meant and no one answered and he seemed disappointed. He was a big Scorsese nut. Later I figured it's because the unreal stuff is from the point of view of child Amsterdam.
@@BlackCatRamen She wasn't flying, she jumped on the guy, and her character was actually one of the most accurate parts in the movie, altho she was a composite of two different women from that time: one wore the copper hooks on her gloves, the other liked to bite people's ears off and kept them in a pickle jar
@@BlackCatRamen "Some of it I half remember, and the rest I took from dreams" It took me way too long to realise that about the battle, I just always chalked it up to Scorsese being hyperbolic, but goddamn was he smart to lay the foundations like that. Especially when he cuts to Amsterdam watch the battle with growing horror.
That woman who chewed that man’s ear off is definitely wife material
This has got to be one of the silliest fight scenes in a movie that takes itself so seriously.

I like how Bill shouts "Priest!" before attacking. He could've stabbed him in the back, but he wanted Priest Vallon to know he was coming.
Not really. Still took him from behind, really. No honour.
And tossed another dude into him so he could not properly defend himself.
