2:57 This moment really sums up what Scorsese wanted to show with this scene. Amsterdam is remembering this fight scene from when he was a child. "Some of it I half remember, and the rest I took from dreams". That's why the fight scene seems so gaudy and over-the-top; it's being recollected from a traumatized kid's memory of the worst day of his life.
Thanks, makes sense now
Good take.
I doubt he was traumatized from the battle itself. I think a real boy of that era would enjoy the spectacle. His Father's death did him in though.
@@nikosgreek352 It’s a debatable interpretation, but I think Scorsese put that shot of his flinch into the montage on purpose. He’s not enjoying the sight of the battle, and there’s a heavy focus on the dead and injured as they writhe or fall to the ground. Sure, he would be more desensitized than us, but I think this was his first real fight, so he wasn’t used to it yet.
@@nikosgreek352 The impression I got was that he had a romanticized notion of what the battle would be like, but was traumatized by the very different, and much more horrific, reality of it. He was a tough street urchin in a violent time and place, yes, but he hardly saw something like this before.

Take a moment to appreciate the badass that was Priest Vallon here. He'd already fought Bill The Butcher before - who we are shown is very dangerous later - and won. He beat him to a pulp and left him alive. Then Bill challenges him again, and he agrees, fighting with a longsword and a giant cross to bludgeon people with, while standing a head above the crowd like a black tower.
Bill has to throw a combatant at him to ensure Vallon is distracted killing him while he secures a jab. And even then, Vallon begins choking him. It takes a killshot to the flank to finally topple him.
No wonder Bill honoured him still, 15 years later. Vallon was a badass.
When you´re feeling pain and hold your ground you´re already a badass.
When you´re watching unspeakable violence and chaos and hold your ground you´re a badass.
When you´re staying cool while everything around you goes downhill you´re a badass.
Not moaning in the face of death means you´re a badass.
Vallon accomplished all four of them.
Makes him one of the worst badasses amongst all badasses, I guess.

@@staticx2552Thats why he allows Decaprio to live the same way. Lesson learned and lesson cycle repeated.
@@staticx2552 That's why Bill thinks he was spared. I think that Priest Vallon likely wanted him to repent but Bill saw it as Priest Vallon wanting him to live in shame. Right after he brings this up Bill proclaims Priest Vallon a great man for wanting him to live in shame. Two different worldviews.
The only way he can beat Priest is by cheating or sacrificing someone. Like what he did, he shoved someone else to die so he can get through with his cheap shot.

A little detail that some may have missed - the first stab to Priest Vallon is not a fatal blow. A stab to the guts like that will bleed a lot, but can be survived with some medical attention. It's not until he puts his hands on Bill's throat that he stabs him in the lungs for the kill. Bill knows this, and confirms it when he demonstrates to Amsterdam later in the movie using a hanging pig corpse.
I never picked up on that!
Yeah basically explaining how he killed his dad
@WungusBill To be fair, the aorta is retroperitoneal; it lies at the back next to the spine, and is only rarely damaged by knife wounds from the front or side.
That been said, a gut wound would still be almost invariably fatal before antibiotics were available, with the victim dying a slow, agonizing death from peritonitis and sepsis.
Yeah right. It's a fatal kill in the 19th century.

Yes, in a real battle all it takes is just ONE stray bullet to kill Rambo. But not in the movies. It wouldn't suit the dramatic storyline well at all.

My favorite part is when Monk gets hyped and starts screaming for who wants some. His character was a reluctant warrior. But when he was in it. He was there for it!
Daniel using some Mohican skills right there...
A cool detail is that Butcher calls out to the Priest before he goes for the kill. It’s only a split second, but it’s enough time for the Priest to turn and swing his weapon. It shows that Butcher refused to stab the Priest in the back. And that he respected his own twisted warrior code.
After he stabs several people in the back
It doesn't seem like that to me. Priest Vallon had already defeated Bill in a one-on-one fight. He knew how strong he was and in this confrontation he couldn't leave anything to chance. And that's what happens in this fight. Someone hits the priest's left arm with an axe. Bill knew at that moment the priest could only use his right arm, the one holding the sword. Then Bill calls him knowing that the priest would not hesitate to deliver a fatal blow. Right there, Bill takes another fighter and takes him towards Vallon to receive the sword, which cancels any threat and then he can stab Vallon, who still shows himself capable of strangling Bill until he receives a second stab. It was not honorable, but rather a sure strategy to win.
1:48 i had a good chuckle at the guy dropping his weapon and just tackeling somebody.
"prepare to receive the true lord!"
My favorite line in the whole movie.
I still don't understand why he talks of fighting honourably when he did not fight honourably at all against The Priest.

The violence that actually occurred daily in the Five Points was much worse than what is depicted in the film. These people were poorer than we can imagine, even if you stole a firearm, finding ammunition was difficult[food was more imperative]. What a difference from today.
It was during the Civil War. Most of the weapons, gunpowder, & ammo were consigned to the war effort.

If Bill The Butcher didn't sneak attack Priest Vallon like that the Irish would have prevailed, while Vallon would in all likelihood have killed The Butcher. What a superbly filmed scene!
To be fair, i think honor goes out the window when your opponent brings a sword to a knife fight.
The music score of that battle scene is something else.
It's a known fact that Rome has never smelled very good. Throughout history, as Rome developed, more and more human and animal waste flowed through the cities. The vast sewer system carried it away but did little to prevent the smell. This led to Roman, and later Italian, citizens losing their sense of smell. They tried to get it back by developing new fragrances and even putting excessive garlic, onion, and other seasonings in their food, but the smell was always too pungent and strong.

I doubt there was ever a gang war that looked like this. Simply because if there's going to be that many of them on both sides for a planned battle they going to build cheap Shields or fight with Spears.

I think the Irish would have constructed Shield because they had a living tradition they inherited of using Targe and sword. Trage being a small round Shield.
The natives would have constructed Spears because that is what a musket with a Bayonet is after you fire it.
Then they would have lined up in formation which would make a lot of sense for concentration of force.
What makes this fight so intense is later on in the movie Bill the Butcher explains how this was vengeance for the beating he took from before from the priest. You can see Bill the Butcher literally searching the crowds to find him and threw a person at him while calling out "priest!" He has such a satisfied look on his face as priest is stabbed the second time at 4:01
О
I think the reason he talks him up so much years after his death is he feels a guilt for winning against the priest in a "dishonest" manner using the other man as a shield and distracting Vallon and then sneaking out from behind him and cheap shotting him rather than facing him eye to eye man to man, hence why he calls him a great man later for sparing him when he didn't have the courage to look him in the eye and again when he killed him he didn't have the courage to face him man to man rather using a meat shield to get the drop on him. Just my thoughts on it I could be over analyzing it but later he makes a big point about Vallon jr. being a sneak thief for trying to get the drop on him at his yearly festival and the only reason he won is because of a rat.
