What’s the movie Pulp Fiction about?
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction follows the mission of two hitmen, Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta), out to retrieve a suitcase stolen from their employer, mob boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). Wallace has also asked Vincent to take his wife Mia (Uma Thurman) out a few days later when Wallace himself will be out of town. Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) is an aging boxer who is paid by Wallace to lose his next fight. Honey Bunny and Pumpkin (Tim Roth) are a couple of young lovers and small-time thieves who decide they need a change of venue. The lives of these seemingly unrelated people are woven together in a wildly entertaining and exhilarating motion picture adventure that both thrills and amuses.

I think what's interesting is how Butch sort of recognized Marsellus was doing what he needed to do in his own interest and that just happened to be opposed to Butch's interest, but he realized that it wasn't "evil" or out of needless viciousness. It was when they were faced with genuine sadistic evil on them that they dropped the facade in the moment and unite.
Butch going back down to save the guy was the most unbelievable part of the movie
I think at the door he thought about it. And realized it was his fault that they got into this situation and also if he saves Marsellus, maybe he will get amnesty. Also this is a fate you wouldnt even would wish your worst enemy
I think it just goes to show the line a character wouldn’t cross. Leaving Marsellus would basically doom him to either death or whatever tf was up with the gimp, and the only reason Marsellus even had a problem with Butch was because he backstabbed him. Butch didn’t have as long of a criminal history as the other characters, so I could see him feeling way more conflicted over this than somebody else

Damn. Imagine how that had to feel. Getting hit by a car and then getting reamed by some random hillbilly as a crime lord. Just imagine what was going through his mind while it was happening. Damn.
I liked that he settled on the Samurai sword, a symbol of honor. Nice touch. Although I have always thought that his saving of Marsellus was equal parts good deed and trying to get the death mark on him called off.
Nah he did it because of what Christopher Walken"s character said about two men being in a situation where there may come a time when they take responsibility over each other. So butch does what he feels is right.
I love this little "searching for weapons" scene, you can basically read his mind, "ohh... lets do this, but I need a weapon...oh.. a hammer good to thrust.. oh no... a baseball bat, even better, ahh wait....chainsaw haha back and for...ohhhhhh...no no...forget the chainsaw... I found the perfect weapon... the Katana!" :D
If he had found an old Traci Lords video he might have gone home.
It took me until my 4th rewatch to realize Butch goes back because of the scene with Christopher Walken. "When two men are stuck in a situation like me and your dad were, you take on certain responsibilities of the other."
Also, Marsellus put his asshole on the line instead of Butch, just like Mr. Walken's hero
And in both situations one of the two gets something shoved up his butt. A gold watch in one case, Zed in the other.
Damn. Never thought of that.
That is exactly why this is the greatest movie of all time.. almost nothing is wasted in this movie.. everything connects
I also love how Vincent and Jules give us an idea of exactly how vengeful Marcellus can be at the very beginning of the movie. True or not, it's plausible that he might throw a man off a building for giving his wife a foot massage.
The big underlying theme of Pulp Fiction is that no matter how badass someone _thinks_ he is, there’s always another level of badass that that person never had any idea existed. In the pre-credit scene, Tim Roth asks, “No one ever robs restaurants-why not?” And, of course, by the end of the movie, he _knows_ why not-and why he’s not cut out to be a robber.
And I consider the film to be more about forgiveness and the benefits of being a good person, but okay.
@@PhilipPetrunak Indeed! The reclamation of Maynard and Zed has really inspired me to live a righteous life.

Baseball bat = Rigid, blunt, can swing from a distance, but can be grabbed if given the chance

Butch punching the gimp takes the cake for me.
The look on Butch's face just before "Step aside, Butch"
Not all original thought, but:
This is the completion of Butch's arc. His father was a brave soldier who, captured and imprisoned, held out through some of the worst hell imaginable until he was finally overcome and passed away. His legacy is passed down (via Christopher Walken's character) through the gold watch. Butch, however, is a pale shadow of that legacy. He's a cheat boxer who takes dives for money- in a word: dishonorable. He's about to go down one last time (swallowing his pride, as Marsellus phrases it) when Vincent Vega mocks him in the bar scene, calling him a "palooka" - the phrase for a mediocre, cheating boxer. Butch's pride is wounded in this moment, and he decides not to take a dive, and instead beats his opponent in the ring so hard he kills him.
But he's still not done. He's made a step toward honor, but there's still one final challenge.
Fast forward to this moment: captured, Marsellus being violated in the other room, Butch once again has a chance to walk away and shirk his father's legacy. But he turns back. He searches for the proper weapon to take up the mantle passed onto him, and doesn't find the right fit. That is, until he spots the katana up on the ceiling (that shot is one of my favorite shots ever- him looking up bloodied, exhausted, and awestruck). The katana is a warrior's weapon. Butch honors his father by becoming a warrior and saving his worst enemy from hell.
That makes sens. Nice theory pale 👍

To be fair, you wouldn't go up to rapist thinking they won't be armed and an armed guy means life or death, he had every right to take time for it

The chainsaw would've done the job but starting it would've alerted Zed and Maynard giving them plenty of time to counter attack. The samurai sword was the best option - it was long, silent, and could one shot kill someone. For every wound they afflict on Zed, they're gonna re-cauterize the wound and create a new one. A very long cycle, of 'almost' killing him.
Yep. Zed's dead alright! Just, very very slowly....
That would be nice if that’s how it worked however you wouldn’t cauterize a wound with a blowtorch. You’d do it with a red hot poker or bar. He wanted the torch to inflict excruciating pain on zed. Burning slowly is probably the worse suffering and death you can imagine
As it should be
If Zed was dead how did he become Redfoot in the Usual Suspects? 😋

The fact that Wallace gets the shotgun so quickly make this scene look like a dream(nightmare). It Doesn't play within the rules of reality. But makes so much sense in the flow of the scene.
That's something I like about Quentin Tarantino's style of directing. From a writing perspective, he tells horrible stories. Characters do things they shouldn't logically be able to, time jumps around a bit (like someone approaching from far away in the background, in the next shot they're suddenly there). But I love it. He tries to capture the "emotional essence" of the story, and bends the physical elements around that. So like, nobody cares about Marcellus Wallace untying himself. We don't care to see it, we don't care if he actually physically could, we want to see him (the person) to be able to get revenge.
Never thought of that, but true it all makes so much sense

Iconic scene.
3:13 you don't see it, but this is the moment Marsellus pulls up his pants.
He chooses the Samurai sword as it is associated with honor. This action is probably the most honorable he has done in his entire life and it establishes Pulp Fiction as something much more than a nihilistic post modern gore swear fest as many critics dismissed it.
I Wonder of that Samurai sword was used by Uma Thurman in Kill Bill

It's hard to believe that this movie was released nearly thirty years ago. Some legendary movies don't age well. This one doesn't age at all.
one of those cases where age is just a number
Thanks for the renewed existential crisis!
If you’re soft just say so.
I never noticed before how much the katana wavers in Butch's hands as he goes down the steps. Butch is terrified: he knows exactly what will happen to him if he gets captured again. It's also why he took his time assessing each weapon (you can see him pause with each one, working out how he could use it to take out the two men): he was going in outnumbered and literally outgunned, so he needed to make sure he went in smart. I'm sure Wallace would have preferred he'd hurried up, but then again he would have been, ahem, screwed as well if Butch had failed. The important thing is that Butch went back when he didn't have to, to save someone who probably wouldn't have done the same for him (Wallace probably would have gone to get his guys with the pliers and blowtorch).
There is no courage without fear. This scene solidifies Butch's character and sense of right and wrong. He had no reason to go back down in the basement. But he did. That's what defined him.
His behavior was entirely realistic. I know the right thing to do is to rush in and save him quickly, but I'm also scared as shit and need to be sneaky, I gotta compose myself a little bit...he gets a minute or two of more ass raping, so be it lol.
The way Willis made his way down the stairs was so iconic to me. Almost like a big cat stalking prey. Absolutely epic.
True!
That shotgun sounds so goddamn amazing
Nothing's cooler than that Katana. 👌
I attended the private world exclusive showing of Pulp Fiction in Nottingham (spring of '94), just after it wowed Cannes and months before it was certified and in cinemas. Mr QT introduced it as a mystery film, he'd snuck the sole (french-subtitled) print off the Cannes projectionist and across to Nottingham in his luggage. He then stood on stage afterwards for an extended Q&A... I still have the free T-shirt and pin badges (thanks Miramax), and a grainy photo of him answering my two questions. 🤓
We assumed half that basement scene would be censored before release, but fortunately it wasn't.
Legendary night and a legendary film. 👏
Thanks again Mr. T. Cheers. Russ
I love the fact that he chose the most honorable weapon of all: a samurai weapon...
Is almost like a symbol of Butch redeeming himself for not having the same honor as his predecessors
VERY good observation!!
He didn't shove the watch up his was tho. Disgraceful
Just as Tarantino intended.
@@redbaron8130 no shit?
I don't think Samurai were particularly honorable, (what honor is there in killing yourself, if defeated, it's kind of the equivelent of throwing the chessboard when you lose) but as somebody pointed out in another comment, of the weapons choices, the sword was the warriors weapon as opposed to the baseball bat, etc., so it was part of his story arch.
The gimp was a very unsettling character for me when i was younger. That someone could live a life like that was beyond my imagination. Such a broken soul.
I love how they censor curse words but not one of the worst and most graphic acts possible in human history.
The music is always a perfect match in every Tarantino movie.
They should have finished showing the end of this scene. Marsellus's ending commentary is priceless.

Ok with everyone saying that the katana is the symbol of honor Butch chooses. But, can we agree it's by far the most efficient weapon at sight? Honor or not?
Didn’t have a choice. The chainsaw most likely had no gas in it.
I wonder what Marcellus thinks as he's calling Vincent to come help him go "Medieval"
The time when the music stop, it's like the music talking to Zed, and say, "the party is over pal"

I saw this film opening weekend in October of 1994. I was 18 years old. I remember a great deal about that night. Where we saw it, the energy in the theatre during the opening credits. I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling of the first time I watched Butch scroll through his weapon options before finally laying his eyes on the mystery weapon. It was the kind of thrill I've only had a handful of times in a movie-going experience. This was the year that I fell hopelessly in love with film as a medium.
The end of Silence of the Lambs was my high point in watching movies in the theater. Nothing before or since has impacted me as much.

Likewise I was there opening weekend too. My cousin and I went, once it was done we immediately got back inline, paid for it again, and watched it again! Like you mentioned, the vibe in that theater was incredible on both viewings. Same here my love of film was definitely cemented in this movie going experience!
I was 12 seeing this in theaters with dad and been one of my favorite movies sinceb
Yep Zed, you are going to receive the FINEST medical care possible. Won't be ALLOWED to die for months.
After watching this movie for so many years I asked myself If Butch was in Marcellus position…Would Marcellus help him?
Probably not, he had a hit put on Butch
It’s hard to say. Leaving a man to be raped and tortured went against Butch’s morals, and I don’t know what morals Marcellus has, assuming he has any at all.
@@midnalazuli793 he buried the hatchet.
Nope. And even after Butch saved his life, Marcellus forced him to leave the city. Marcellus was an ungrateful, honorless piece of dirt.
Marcelus is shown to be good with his subordinates, and some of them, like Jules, treat him more like a coworker than a boss, and he even had zero problem when he told him he would quit. I believe Marcellus wouldn't have let Butch go through that, but he wouldn't've let him go either.
