That is amazing! All those treasured antiques could make for great stories of the past. Those storage structures could literally be turned into a museum.

Nice home, my wife's grandma house is also in the countryside, I always like the smell of the tatami entering the house...

Yeah, me too, Claudio! This new house used a lot of ‘Sugi’ wood. That also smells amazing.

Thanks for the house tour Dean and Keiji . 🏡 I treasure old stuff. 👍😎 Those musical drawers were interesting

It's not uncommon to find these old draws, where you push one in and another pops out, but some where designed purposely to have this instrumental effect. So cool! 😃

@@runAwayJapan They are cool 😀 I didn't know that about those drawers thanks for the info. What would be really interesting is to play a tune on those drawers. 🎶😀

Dean, keep the sword, we'll take Keiji :-) He is a bright, curious, and fun lad! The house looks great--how is the insulation and heating system? Those are two things that one often finds less than optimal in Japanese houses, from what I have seen so far.

Hi etherdog, I can report that both old houses and most new houses in Japan, both go with the option of not bothering with insulation and any heating system 😂Very few house in Japan have central heating, radiators, or even double glazed windows etc. Getting a good sweater seems to be the tactic here 😅

Those storage sheds look full of history, days worth of fun hunting through all of those. Definitely treasure!. I hope to own a house in Japan one day. Now you've given me something to aim for. Cheers guys :)

Cheers, Robb! With the Akiya Houses now getting sold off, I think foreigners have a real shot of owning old houses full of history for very little investment too. I'd like to find one out in the countryside one day and restore it, just as a hobby.

I would love to explore those storage rooms, I bet many of the things there have a history. How about taking us on a tour of your wife's hometown?

Hi Marigen. That’s a good idea. Nara is an amazing city. I’ll see if I can get keiji to join me on a walking tour. That might be really interesting. We can pick the areas that most tourists would miss.
