  • Debunking myths and dismantling the failing & broken arguments of MAGA supporters.
Before you start hating, no, I am not paid by the DNC, Biden Campaign, or Democrats to advocate for him or democratic policy. I'm passionate about ideas and policy itself, and right now my values align with the Democrats. I'm actually expected to lose over $25k this year in brand deals because my content has turned political, so this whole chapter is costing me money lol.

Interested in your take on the Electoral College, Julian. I am personally someone who supports it. Can you please explain your view? Thanks!

I do not support it. I think we should pass a constitutional amendment enshrining one person one vote. That’s democratic - and logical given President is leader of all Americans equally

1.) Small states are generally disadvantaged by population. You might -- reasonably -- say "Well one person one vote means that the 39 million Californian's should have a much larger say in who the President is than Wyoming's 500 thousand. This, I think everyone agrees on. However, I think there is place for an electoral mechanic to encourage a would-be President to have support across large land areas of the United States.
2.) The electoral mechanic to edge smaller states to have more influence enables -- in my opinion -- a more moderate candidate. By forcing candidates to care a bit more about the smaller states, it ensures a leader who is closer to the center of the ideological spectrum. As I'm sure you're aware, it isn't necessarily Red States vs Blue States but instead Urban vs Rural. If a candidate only had to care about urban areas, the Federal Government would be a lot more Democratic (I'm a Democrat too!) than the people want. "One Person One Vote" is a great slogan that 99% of the country would agree with. But it ignores the reality of campaigning. Candidates would spend all of their time and cash on voters in urban areas. I suspect both sides would try to court more rural voters with loud splashy promises as they could be more easily communicated on TV or other scalable media, but they would view it as a side show. Beside, the electoral college isn't all that skewed. Only 5 times in our nearly 250 years of history has it given the electoral college to the person who lost the popular vote. Wyoming has 3 delegates. California has 54.
3.) The United States is a very successful society. Our institutions are broadly successful and we have maintained rule of law, general stability, and spectacular feats such as our high standard of living. If you are going to assert that we need to change them, you should have a good reason. Not saying you don't, but I think its wise to be naturally conservative towards changing out institutions.
4.) I feel like for electoral reform there are other more feasible, realistic and better alternatives. Expanding the house, increasing staff budgets to members, etc.
Just my 2c. I am open to changing my mind though.

I really like CRS reports for policy because they are pretty unbiased, in my opinion at least. I read them all the time. The authors of each article are generally knowledgeable in the field and they generally keep their opinions out of the reports. If the media source wants to get more views and attention, it's going to be incentivized to twist stories over time. Just checkout the number of political "commentators" who spout nonsense. Which, for whatever reason, seems more common on the Right today.
