"Cai" is the Mandarin Pinyin for "vegetable." His name is Vegetable. A lot of the names in ATLA are super on point. "Heibai" means "black-and-white", "Wan Shi Tong" means "knower-of-all-things". Kind of in the tradition of a story like Journey to the West, where the names really do tell you just about everything you need to know about someone. But yep, his name is Vegetable.
Cai is also homophones with the actual Chinese surname for Chua（蔡）, and yes the surname gets punned very often with vegetable（菜）.
@@Blitzcreeper239 One question I always had about Chua, is that Minnan or Hakka? Because IIRC it’s “Choi” (“Coi” in Jyutping) for Cantonese. But yeah more realistically the cabbage merchant’s actual name is 蔡, not literally 菜. But I certainly know why the creators of ATLA decided the merchant’s name was Cai, lol.

@@bkschatzki Not too sure about being Minnan or Hakka, but yes I did learn it was Choi in Canto haha... From Wikipedia, it seems to have originated from the state of the same name in the Zhou dynasty. And it says Chua is based on Teochew and Hokkien pronunciation, which makes sense to me.
@@Blitzcreeper239 Pretty sure Teochew and Hokkien are Minnan, so ya. Good info though. A lot of surnames come from small ancient kingdoms. I'm pretty sure 陈/陳 (Chen/Chan/Caan/etc.) is also an old kingdom name. And if you break the character down literally by its components, I'm pretty sure it just means something like "a place east of some hills," but don't quote me on that.
Anyway, I'm very glad to have learned something in the comments section of this video about an unfortunate fictional cabbage seller. So cheers to that.

To be fair, Bumi canonically surrendered Omashu without a fight before being imprisoned. Also, the timeline implied by the video is completely wrong, as Omashu was visited and shown to be occupied territory well before the slug incident, let alone the Ba Sing Se episodes.
Azula didn't take over Omashu, she was still in the Fire Kingdom at the time.

I like the idea that going to the feast he still harbours a level of resentment to Aang and Sokka and Katara for all they did to his cabbages, But idolises Toph, Because who in the Earth Kingdom doesn't?

I've always believed the idea that there's a hidden organisation of cabbage merchants in atla. They resupply any merchant who loses their wares in an accident, and just help each other in general. That would explain how cai keeps getting back his cabbages, and also adds a hilarious implication to the show, being that there's an undiscovered powerful group of cabbage merchants

I think Sokka was messing with him. He knows who Kai is, what he did and why - after all, Sokka is a friend of Zuko, who called him by name. The Gaang would be the first people to forgive him, along with The White Lotus crew(Bumi might even find the story as amusing as it is sad(sad because of any of his people who died in Omashu's fall)). I can't imagine Sokka, Katarra, and Aang NOT apologizing to him and Bumi for that mess... With Sokka recanting a few seconds later with "Wait, why are Katarra and I apologizing!? WE didn't do-OW!!" As Katarra elbows him in the ribs.

My favorite part about tLoK is that an heir to cabbage merchant Cai finally achieves some well deserved revenge on the heir to Avatar Aang. While Korra survives and it doesn't cause her any long term setbacks, I was still cheering for team cabbage!

I love that the story goes that this guy never gave up on his passions. After failing his whole life purely from freak accidents, he was fully taken care of. Even though he felt guilty of his war crimes, it was still a piece of his journey that lead him to innovating technology. Everything in this guy's life lined up on the sheer power of believing in his dreams. He has the true protagonist powers.
I was a bit sceptical going into this video, but after watching the whole thing I can definitely say I agree that this was in fact, hilarious 😆😆

Slight blip in the timeline there... the Omashu Secret Tunnel information (10:05) should have come earlier on the timeline, before the cabbage merchant sees the Avatar getting into Ba Sing Se (8:53), for it to be useful to the Fire Nation in capturing Omashu.

I prefer to believe Boomy did reimburse the cabbage seller and that's how he could afford to get the next cart, but the secret spy story is fun too.
I like to think Bumi gave the cabbage merchant *some* money, which is how he was able to afford to set up his third cabbage cart in that episode. Still, going through three carts in two days is pretty expensive!
Also, it's a market stand rather than a cart, but a bunch of cabbages get washed away during the flood in 'Jet' - I like to think those belonged to The Cabbage Merchant as well. The town is occupied by the Fire Nation military, so maybe that's where he gets approached with the cabbage slug scheme.

I was making a reference to 'Twisted: the musical'. Which is a parody of Jafar from Aladdin. The idea is that the Disney movie is told from the "good guy's" perspective, but it's not the true story. One of the songs has all the Disney villains stating their good intentions... Except Cruella; making a coat out of puppies is just cruel.
Actually Hans from Frozen written as though is a master of manipulation. It's subtle, but his use of psychological tricks could be interesting. He only reveals his plans when he is sure Anna is dead and Elsa is branded a treasonous witch. How was he to know Anna would sacrifice herself in the name of true love for her sister's sake.
