    Original video ► • Top 5 Most Devastating...
    This is Nick's response to the viewers' comments about the 5 strikes that he considers the most effective for street combat.
    First of all, these top 5 strikes are not the all-around "best". Nick teaches, first and foremost, to avoid potential fights by diffusing the situation. If you can't, you need to be able to strike first, in such a way that would let you beat the attacker as fast as possible, or give you enough time to get away.
    In this sense, these strikes are the most effective, perfectly suited to begin and finish a street fight as fast as possible. They are all pre-emptive, and aren't meant to be executed mid-combat.

    Been practicing martial arts since I was able to walk. It's in my family.
    Here is what I know.
    As long as it is hand to hand combat and no weapons are involved. If you can disable their ability to see, breath or walk; the fight should end very quickly.
    Do not fight. But if you must.
    Strike First. Strike Fast. Strike Hard.
    Be safe.

    i like the way this guy explains self defense. fighting as more a last resort and attempting a verbal end to an arguement before physical. thanks, i enjoy all of your vids.

    Nick is totally practical. He is focussing on what's realistic, and he mentions situational awareness (the other friend, the guy pulling a knife). This is actually very sophisticated training because he isn't teaching things in a vacuum. The idea of "going pre emetive" as a truly self defense strategy in some of these real world scenarios is what he sees as the overview. He's not advocating aggression, he's advocating common sense in a dire situation where things are going to get ugly no matter what you do. He wants you to recognize that and get yourself out of it the safest way so that you can get home to your family. A big guy can kill you with one punch or change your life forever. For someone (like myself) that is much smaller, this can be a very dangerous situation to be in.

    About the head clinch thing... when you grab someone around the head in preparation for knee strikes take the opportunity for a shoulder butt into the face... as you pull the head in and down, angle your shoulder slightly and pull the face hard into the round of the shoulder, then roughly down into the 'locked' position.
    It's one of those cheap shots...not particularly damaging, but it hurts like hell and distracts from the knee strikes that you're about to launch.

    This guy Nick know what he is talking about. It's best to avoid street fights even if it hurts your ego. Why risk going to the hospital, jail or the morgue?

      +Nick Drossos Nick you seem like you have good intentions in the videos you post but what Jeff is saying I've been saying to you. If you can just turn and run then there is no fight. Again, I think you have good intentions here. My suggestion is to always start your videos with a statement about not engaging and even turning around and just walking away fast saying "hey ,my bad..sorry about that". Also you have probably had 10 solid bar fights that got bad or dangerous. Just like anyone our age. No one has ever pulled a knife out on me. Maybe it's just the video's i saw. They all have you using the example of a person pulling out a knife. This isn't Mexico. No one walks around with knives. Though lots of people have gun permits. Thanks for posting the info but think about the word Jeff used, "ego". The first rule with street or bar fights is to do everything you can no matter how silly you look while trying not to fight.

    • @MultiJamesman
      @MultiJamesman 8 років тому +1

      +John Pandolfo Tonnes of people walk around with knives. I walk around with a knife, they have a lot of uses other than stabbing people. Nick did some bouncing and you're gonna see a lot more physical, crazy shit than the average person will doing that.

    • @JohnPandolfo121
      @JohnPandolfo121 8 років тому

      MultiJamesman I was a bouncer too and if someone has a knife there not getting into any nightclub. It's 2016. You can't get in with keys. No metal. In the days when he was a bouncer there was no Patriot Act. No one is going to jail while walking around with a knife. They might have the utility knife but bu the time you get it open your head is bashed in or the person took off. If you wanna say non spring switch blades. Police will arrest you and have you sort that out in front of a judge. No one walks around with a knife. People have guns with concealed carry permits. Those people know better than to pull a gun out during a fight. You sound ridiculous. Your friend might have god intentions but he's living in a fantasy world. It;s not the 70s or even 80s anymore.

    • @MultiJamesman
      @MultiJamesman 8 років тому +1

      John Pandolfo I can get that lock knife open with one hand in no time at all - I practice it, drunk, sober, whatever. There are many kinds of non-metallic knives. Lots of people walk around with knives. What else are you gonna do when some rabid, stray dog comes at you?

    • @JohnPandolfo121
      @JohnPandolfo121 8 років тому

      MultiJamesman Your living in the past. No one with an ounce of intelligence will go out with a knife. If your from a area of Philly or any city except NYC then yeah maybe you have some low life that would be carrying a knife. It's 2016. No one has a knife on them. They either have a legal gun or an illegal gun. You can't get into any store with a knife. If you get caught with one you face 100,000 in legal fee's and a minimum of 5 years in jail. Learn the law. The bad people seem to know it better than the more intelligent people. With that said. Go ahead and waste your time learning how to defend against a knife attack.will do one thing. Get you shot. Which helps us. One less knucklehead walking around. Your just silly.Telling me he was a bouncer. I can see his age. He was a bouncer before the Patriot Act. Think those new laws are a joke. Also means you just living in the past. Fell free to waste your time. Everyone has a concealed carry now. Which does not include a knife. Do your homework.

    Note to fighters (especially those who have had little or no training):
    ALWAYS be careful when using throat strikes, they're a lot more devastating than people think, definitely can be lethal. Living with someone's death on your conscious and knowing that it's your fault would not be ideal, even if it's self-defense.

      Easier to disable than kill, break a finger, nose or arm, they won't fight after that unless on drugs (in which case just run because those on ice for example have super human like strength but aren't coordinated or in a state to pursue very well), don't be so quick to go for the throat and kill, you will regret it, you'll see this in time.

    I agree with Nick.. This is an evil world we live in, and if someone is up in your face, they are there for malicious intent. Preemptive is not only a principle, but survival,, your not gonna to have a ref, or a cop, or anyone to bail you out of certain situations,, so its definitely better to have these strategies and not need them, than to need them and not have them.. The only goal is to defuse if possible,, or do what you can to get away or end it quick.. Preemptive will definitely give you the upper hand.. Tyvm Nick you help a lot of people.

    Hi Nick, I recently found your videos, and I'm liking the advice, thank you for them. Very informative.
    But, I'm wondering, don't most men already anticipate someone taking a shot at the groin, just as a dirty trick in fighting? I would think they would know to anticipate such a thing instinctively, (much like protecting your face from being hit). Would it be as effective to try that, because it would be a more expected, cheap shot, especially as a female, defending?
    Or do you find it is more a shot of whatever area is the most open to attack opportunity available, like if you have a shot, take it, no matter what body part presents itself? I would think more to hit the ribs, the thigh muscle, the knees.

    Great video again, Nick. And yes, people SHOULD watch the other videos in the series to get a more complete understanding of your philosophy & approach. One of the reasons i subscribed sometime ago was because you're consistent across your videos. Reminds me of that other outstanding instructor with a doorman background, Geoff Thompson, who has a history of destroying idiots with black belts who tried to test him .Plus..the fact that I USED your method to get out of a bear hug from a guy who was bigger than me a while back. You're more of a 'teacher by principle' instead of giving textbook fixes for situations. Keep up the great work!

    1 day in a real muay thai class you will be told never to hold the back of the neck but hold the the growth spot of the head or the back of the head with your forearms glued to his colar bone. So if you hold the back of my neck what are you going to do if I posture up and look up to close the distance? his might work on a dummy with no arms though. Also don't poke someones eyes if your not ready to get your eyes poked as well.

    Dont worry about the comments dude. These are very good tips. The thing about fight/self defence videos on youtube is that theres so many macho internet tough guys who will always be finding flaws in everything, the thing they dont realise (probably due to inexperience in real street fights) is that there is no such thing as a perfect self defence strategy as real fights are fast, brutal and most of all, unpredictable. If they acknowledged this and didnt get the majority of their fighting tips from movies and ufc they'd realise that your strategy of ending the fight as quickly and efficiently as possible is a very logical one.

      ***** Always. I just want to add that I like your approach because it's clear to me that you are not a bully brawler but giving advice to stay safe; Off course any one can abuse this advice, but that is everybody's own responsablilty. When I was on a holiday in Morocco, I went to the pharmacy at night. I new the neighbourhood and country very well (feels almost like home because the people are very generous). Three criminals, about my age (I was 25 at the time I guess), tried to stop me: I was caged in by a parked car at my right, next to the car was one of the crooks, in front of me there was one, and one behind me. I was very "aware" as you always remind us to be. I kept my cool (back then I was very skinny, about 45 pounds lighter then now so i really needed perfect technique), I stept forward, showing no fear (even if I was scared), the guy stopped me while showing the knife in his hands (just showing it, as if he thought that would be enought). I gave him a light jab with my left, to set him up and then gave him a terrible right hook, with all the torque and force of my rotating hip and lower back. He collapsed in front of me. I stepped over him, and did not turn around. I just listened very carefully. "are the other two moving, do I hear them running towards me,...". But it was very silent. I did not turn as if I was saying: "I'm not even worried about you guys". When I came back after two minutes, the guy was stll on the floor, and the other two joined a group of three. I passed them, and they greeted me, showing their hands and showing a kind of gentle attitude as if they wanted to say "we"re cool". A week later I heard one of them killed (with a knife and stick) a man that decided to give them his money. So my extremely violent attack saved my life. In my own country I was attacked by a nazi hooligan when I tried to protect a girl they were trying to throw into the river ( a river known to be deadly because of its strong underwater current). He hit me wit a leather bag (don(t know the right name, but I'm talking about what you see in Robin Hood movies, where they keep there coins in). He hit me so hard that I lost consciousness for about 1 second. I later discovered there was a metal bal in this "pouch " (is that the word?), and had a fractured skull). So I lost consciousness for a second, but didn't fell to the ground because of the bus stop glass wall. I opened my eyes and grabbed the first thing I saw in front of me, and gave him to headbutts, right on the nose. He fell to the ground and I kicked him in the stomach because I knew he wasn't alone and I had to neutralize the danger as soon as possible. Luckily the bus stopped, and I was so "dazed" that I didn't really realized what just happened. I got of the bus and two days later I got a terrible head ache; I went to the doctor and fell unconcious on the floor. In the hospital they discovered the fractured skull, rising pressure, and blood leaking into my eye sockets (under the eye). I survived, but it was close. The guy that attacked me got 6 months probation so no jailtime. Disgusting I know. The judged said that he was already punished enough because of the injuries I inflicted on him. Imagine that. He tried to kill the girl, and me, almost succeeds and gets no jailtime. And it was his second time in two years he almost killed some one. His injuries are blind in one eye, and he has problems with solid foods. All this to say that self defence, i a very agressive way, is nowadays, neccesary if you do not want to die/ Diffuse with words, always, but when you see that you are getting set up for a sucker punch or are getting "circled" by multiple attackers, strike as hard as possible, with no mercy. A judge will understand, IF you yourself used common sense before taking action. Keep up the good video's.

    What if you are physically weak. I was in the hospital for 9 months. I am as weak as I have ever been. While I am trying to build my strength back I have run into situations that turned violent. I did my best to avoid them but I ended up getting sucker punched and then pounded while I was on the ground. I need some techniques to use in the mean time. Anything?

    you're right man, don't let the 12 year old trolls get ya down, most are full of shit.
    we don't pay attention to them anyways. Awareness is key, you reminded me of that. I've been in about 15 to 20 fights, and wasn't the worse off guy because I was aware, and I used my opponent's aggression against him, or his ignorance, if you will. I like how you preach that it is all in your mind, because it is my man. Thanks for all the people and myself that will use your knowledge to level the playing field. Keep up the good work my man.

    Under Irish law assault begins when the aggressor shows clear signs that s/he is going to attack. So, for example, if an aggressor is making a fist gesture at me then they have already assaulted me under Irish law.
    Therefore, if I strike an aggressor who made a fist gesture (or some other sign that suggested that an attack is probable) then my strike is classified as self defence - even though I struck the aggressor first ;)

    Another way to get a accurate throat strike is to, open palm to the upper chest then slide straight up to the neck. Your thumb and your fingers are all ready set to strike.

    I had a violent encounter recently my neighbour came banging on my door with a hammer and apparently I burst out of the door and battered him around the head with a stick I was drunk so cannot remember, but have been told I gave him no chance and that I had opened up his head and there was blood everywhere it really scares me as this could have ended in somebodies death or long imprisonment, the Police were called and I was arrested they were quite sympathetic as this guy is always causing trouble, but now im worried I will have to defend myself again I hate violence it makes me feel sick and even when you win there are consequences, but some people won,t stop he has rowed with all my neighbours but when I was told what I had done I was kind of shocked and ashamed, but also a little proud because I have been afraid my whole life.

    Hey Nick. Great video. I have a question - happy for anyone to answer. When going for a head strike or a throat strike on an opponent thats beefed up, with a thick solid neck and shoulders is that still going to be an effective first move?

    • @face..301
      @face..301 9 років тому

      Open palm? U mean a slap lol
      If u have no power learn bjj all you will do is piss the guy off by slapping him

    • @davidfellner1119
      @davidfellner1119 9 років тому

      Face.. Smashing someone's nose with your open palm will exert just as much force as punching them, with much less risk of breaking the many little bones in your hand. But thank you for stating the obvious that slapping is not an effective fighting technique.
      I've read/heard that slapping (or clapping?) the ears is highly effective, but I don't have the training or knowledge to back this up

    • @face..301
      @face..301 9 років тому

      Have you ever hit a heavy bag with an open palm? It's has nowhere near the same power you fucking goof.
      And you thank me for stating the obvious but disagree with what I said haha are you really that stupid that makes no sense

    • @davidfellner1119
      @davidfellner1119 9 років тому +1

      A palm strike delivers plenty of force to break someone's nose and snap their head back. And the part of your comment I called *obvious* was that slapping is not effective (thereby agreeing with it). The part I *disagreed* with is that palm strikes are ineffective. Calling someone stupid for something they clearly didn't say makes you come across as ignorant and oblivious.
