Here because Sarah N Tuned mentioned you in her Pilot Trailsport vid and had to come see your guys take!
That's a man
Have watched several of these reviews in AZ and Kase does the most polished review yet ! Very nice job at presenting the Pilot and features . Kudos to Kase !!
I think that’s the thing these off-road guys forget. AWD works as you accelerate and continue to press the gas. It doesn’t work effectively doing a “stop and go” style of driving. If wheels slip, keep on accelerating, and let the AWD do its thing.
I'm looking forward to the Ridgeline Trailsport.
I have been towing everyday for two years with my 2012 Honda Pilot and I just have to say that v6 is a strong reliable engine just gotta do the routine maintence
You guys are one of the best car reviewers on line. Very professional, detailed with our being boring or over explained. Thanks Case
Would be cool to have an off-road comparison between the TS and Elite to see the real world difference. It’s too bad you can’t have the TS as a package on other trims.
Agree. Leather interior ... cooled seats is a must for summer time heat. I'd rather have cloth but that's another argument. I also think a 3 way, Kia Telluride, and both Passport models!
There would be no difference aside from an inch worth of bottoming out.
This. Why can't us poors buy a TS Sport?
YES, Honda! Keep the Jeep Grand Cherokee honest. Give us that competition. Need more offroad capable midsize SUVs
Off road capable and fwd doesn’t make sense to me. Its hardly a SUV more like a crossover.
Hear me out, add one maybe two inches of lift and put some more rugged/aggressive tires and, beyond rock crawling, you could pretty much go almost anywhere.
Case: You are one of the best testers along with Tommy. I can tell just by the way you confidently handle the steering wheel you are one-with the car and really know what's it's doing and feel it. You are a true "car-guy"!
Okay, so this is another "Honda Sponsored" event. When will you get one to test on your own?? I'm very impressed for what it is! A 7 passenger Family SUV. I don't think you want a family hauler with 11" of ground clearance... the kids won't be able to get in! I would personally like a Passport version with all the skip plate goodness and then I'd lift it 1- 1-1/2" and put some real off-road tires on it. 🙂 This is only the beginning as Honda is starting to really get their act together. The next Passport will be even better and have more ground clearance!
Great video. Love all the angles off road
An aftermarket lift and beefier tires would make this thing much better.
Better is subjective. A lift on a unibody is more like walking on your tip toes, versus actually being a taller person. Better tires, I’ll totally give you. Tires always make a vehicle.
@@rustlesee Definitely not an extreme lift, I'm talking like 1-2 inches. Think of it as a short person wearing shoes with thicker soles. Taller tires would would most likely require said lift for clearance issues. These stock tires don't look very tall. Until a Pilot goes body on frame it will never be a serious off roading vehicle, but improvements can be done to anything if a person is willing to spend the $. That's objective. I totally agree about the tires tho.
My god what an indepth review. So well researched and demonstrated. 3 thumbs up
I get what Honda is aiming for but they are more for sand and snow not jeep trails. Unless your Jon DZ adventure and you lift your passport 3.5" then you have a chance. The fit, finish and reliability is still miles above any domestic ie Bronco Sport.
Great review. Glad someone did a thorough review of the Trailsport and not just the Elite. Hoping in the near future we get an update with the 12" monitor from the Accord and full digital gauge cluster. I hate the half and half look.
Somewhere around Sedona would be my guess. Those towering sandstone buttes are beautiful!!
I grew up in Flagstaff. And the Sedona area was always our favorite road trip setting.
Awesome presentation
This young man is truly an excellent presenter. I'm very impressed, keep him around!
Great review! Quality presentation without unnecessary yap yap.
Looks Perfect to take you to your favorite Campground.🚙
you and sarah did great on the tests
That color blue against that beautiful landscape is awesome! Not sure I'd pick it for my daily commute through rural MI though.
If you say so. I felt like upchucking.
@Krane lol.
Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm just tired of grey skies and snow on the ground I guess :)
Why not? You'd SEE it in a Sea, an OCEAN of BLA Grey or Beige of the day! Life is way too short for Bla Beige! Trust😂
Kase yas. You magnificent human. being good work man
👏👏👏🙏 GOOD JOB KASE 🙏... AND TFL CAMERA NINJA...COOL ANGLES 👏👏👏 ... HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY EVERYONE ✌️
When I think of Honda I think of...Moab
That’s Sedona
Imagine your new 50k Honda and you grind down your skid plates like the ones he showed! WARRANTY VOID!
What’s funny is that Honda actually believes this to be a competitor to the 4Runner TRD Pro
Get a bloody low range and real clearance.
The trans buttons SUCK!
It's about time we get to see what the i-VTM4 can do with some A/T tires!
Will be interesting to see what this does on the roller test. As I understand it, Honda has some type of electronic "line-lock" to transfer torque between the front wheels (the iVTM4 does this automatically for the rear wheels) to the wheel with traction... this may be on TrailSport only.
Check out JonDZ Adventures. He has a modded Passport, and he does some pretty aggressive trails with it.
At least they put you guys on a decent trail to actually test the vehicle made it work some and definitely scraped a few times
Thanks for this review. We have the pilot and passport on our radar to upgrade from our civic
Nice Review !
20 MPG combined? LOL, that’s EXACTLY what I’m getting in my V6 Bronco!
I did notice him bashing on the Broncos fuel mileage. I said huh? I have heard of plenty of people getting 18-20 with their four door's. People with the bronco sports are mid to high 20's. He needs to get a clue...
Yeah, this time of year I typically get 19.5 combined in my 5th gen 4Runner. The mileage on this is disappointing considering the price.
Your Bronco won’t last as long as this Honda. And this Honda is a crossover 😂
@@trailrunnah8886 About the same as non hybrid Highlander, AWD Telluride, and AWD Pathfinder, costing about the same. Not sure why it would be disappointing if all the non-hybrid players fall in about the same mpg.
@@disco.lemonade Fair enough. I usually don't follow this segment, so I wasn't aware of the mileage. I thought by now they have them getting a little bit better mileage, more like 25 combined. I'm just comparing this to my Toyota 4Runner. That's 20-year-old technology and is rated at 17/21, not really that far behind this more modern vehicle that's less capable.
For what it is, this is great, however it has LESS ground clearance than a Subaru Outback (which has 9.5”!). I think Honda could have done better in that area. Otherwise I love the look of this, and it’s bound to sell VERY well.
Honda needs to up their game with the Ridgeline. Factory 2" lift and beefier tires would help.
Wait for the new model next year. Hint hint!!
I'm not going to sell my Wrangler just yet, but great review. Covered what I wanted to know
Hope you had a nice time in AZ. Did you get a chance to talk to other journalists like Ryan? He had a nice long review on this vehicle and had a lot of good things to say about it. You did not drive yours as gingerly I think. 😆 Nicely done Kase.
It was impressive to see how well the 4 wd system worked. Overall, a great looking SUV.
I think I really liked that....
Is the removable center seat available in this trim?
I don’t see any footage of “The Steps” at Broken Arrow. Did you take on that obstacle in the Pilot or did you bypass it?
i want see 2023 Honda pilot trailsport vs 2023 Nissan pathfinder Rock Creek! I missing past 1990 Japanese SUVS sweet spot🥰
Like you I miss pre-2000 vehicles. The new models just don't work for me. My 89 Nissan hardbody v6 SE still gets 22 mpg an gets me where I want to go here in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah an Nevada. (260000 an still going)
Well, this has about a half inch more ground clearance. Plus the AWD system is really close to the Acura one. For my money, I’d pick this over Nissan.
Way to go Honda
Hope you had fun with Sarah-N-Tuned. She gave you guys a little shout out with a little arrow pointing to whom ever was videoing you. Kind of neat that two of my favorite UA-cam Channels are at the same place. She goes in to a little more technical detail and likes to crawl under the vehicles(usually she has a lift, but not today).
Sarah-N-Trooned
I realize it messes with fuel economy, but 8" of ground clearance on an "off road" vehicle with a longer wheelbase is just not enough. Adjustable ride height features add complexity and cost, but it would also give the vehicle capability to traverse more terrains that would otherwise abuse its skid plates.
I think that is Sarah-n-tuned at the back
I'm really considering a Honda Pilot, if l'm honest with myself this is all the SUV need. love the fact that it doesn't have a Turbo and rather has a V6 NA which equals reliability. And also, lI'm not sure if I would be comfortable rock climbing with my brand new 60K off-road truck/SUV so who am kidding. If really want to go off-roading would just buy a Honda SXS or a Polaris and tow it with my super comfortable Honda Pilot
I wonder how it would have handled the trail if you left it in the Normal driving mode instead of switching to the Trail mode?
I love Honda and Toyota but the 2023 Honda Pilot TrailSport is rated at 18 city 23 highway, so I might as well keep my Tacoma which is lifted 3 inches, has 32 inch all terrains, and gets me 16 to 17 city and 21 to 22 highway. I would only be getting 1 to 2 MPG better and would be sacrificing way too much offroad. Its still impressive though if you dont mind frequently scraping the hell out of your underbody. I've been on that same trail and never scraped once or had any slipping.
Your Tacoma is nowhere near as comfortable, nor does it have 3 rows of seating. Yeah they could've lifted it more (but that's fighting against rollover safety) but it still has to live up to the expectation of a comfy street car that happens to survive moderate trails
Would love to see an off-road comparison of the high level “soft-roader” trims- Subaru’s Wilderness vs Honda’s Trailsport vs Nissan’s Rock Creek
Don't forget GMC's Acadia AT-4. 😂
Add the Toyota Rav4 Adventure and TRD trims into that as well
Anyone know exactly what trail in AZ they were at? I know it's in or near Sedona. Was it Broken Arrow?
it truly looks like response of slipping condition is much faster now
Can it complete the Alpine Loop?
I want to see the Subaru Ascent vs this trailsport
Subaru has let their AWD system go once they went to open rear diffs and brake modulated traction control. The ivtm4 is the same as SH-AWD from Acura products since the pilot is an MDX with different suspension and a third row. It's a very capable AWD system that Subaru hasn't matched.
It would still be a good comparison to watch though
How's the radio?? Not one reviewer mentioned the watts/speakers for each model or how it sounded.
They're pretty good stereos. Not as good as the els you'd get in an Acura but as a bit of an audiophile, I could live with it
8" maximum ground clearance, but the converter underneath is hanging even lower; hence we hear the metal grinding sound even on tiny bumps. My 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has 8.7" clearance. In this video alone we heard about 5 metal grinds! I don't care about the stitching or the tactile knobs.
9.5" would be good for what this vehicle purports to be. Badging be damned, I couldn't care less about advertising its off-road "prowess". They got the off-road robots sorted, or so it seems - now to add some clearance to give the skidders a little bit of a reprieve...
This is a SUV id buy for the wifey and still be fine driving it myself. Might just trade in the 14 Pilot for this....
Cool 🥰
We love tough car 🇲🇲
Lol you found one!!! Here in Canada it is more than a year waiting list. Buy the way that car with 5 passengers will never go true that route
Continental Terrain Contact A/T are excellent mild A/T tires. Pretty suprising that Honda put such "aggressive" A/Ts on it. They have very high rolling resistance, so MPG will absolutely be impacted.
That Pilot TS needs a lift from the factory. I'm surprised they said they developed it on that trail, since it was smacking the ground quite a bit.
I agree. Another inch and a half or slightly bigger tires would help
Its not just to lift it up and call it a day lmao.
10:05 This is not the TrailSport model, want to know how noisy with the all terrain tires.
Would be much better if it had better ground clearance.
No shit, Sherlock
I want a real Trail Sport like this for the Honda Passport!
Would love to see this compared to the Bronco Sport
Not even a comparison, at all. The length and weight kill this off road, if you’re comparing them. BS has more ground clearance too. This is a great option for families that like to adventure on the weekends though.
Dude the bronco sport is a joke. I almost bought it a year ago until every girl with a latte drives it around New England. I hope your not comparing an over priced bronco with something that will last for 10 years. It’s a hybrid of basic off-road and regular every day use. Bronco is so ugly looking
Better than an element?
Would the Forester wilderness complete this course?
can you guys do a slip test of this car? thanks.
The AWD is the same as SH-AWD so any videos you see with that system in an Acura are directly applicable here
Seems slightly better than the passport
Do Passport next!
It’s a bummer that third seat isn’t an option in the second row.
Does the engine still use a timing belt, or timing chain?
Belt!
Honda definitely has the right formula for this one. When the Passport get this refresh later in the fall (Honda just confirmed it and it will be 2024MY), I think I might pre order one. The 4Runner while capable is way too outdated for my 80% on road driving and I'm not stoked about Toyota moving to a Turbo 4 for the next Gen. So the updated Passport is shaping up to be the next best thing: good offload capability, newish tech combined with old school powertrain, and Japanese reliability.
If you want a car with ‘the tech’ to lull you to sleep on the way to Costco, you’re not in the market for a 4Runner or any off road car. The low tech is the whole reason why a 4Runner or any traditional 4x4 with solid axles will outperform this Pilot every time.
@@miniaddict4534 yeah they already said they’re not in the market for a 4Runner nor any off-road vehicle as they do 80% highway. Also look around, the majority of 4Runners on road are on their way to Costco and target. Jeeps and Bronco have a ton of tech inside and make for great grocery getters too.
Is this in Sedona
"More than your average subaru owner"... You do realize the REGULAR Forester comes stock with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, right? Not to mention the Outback and Forester Wilderness models come with even more at 9.5 and 9.2 inches. 😆
Subarus AWD doesn't compare well against the SH-AWD/ivtm4, not anymore. They don't even get limited slip rear diffs anymore while this has full torque vectoring in the diff, not just faking it with brake modulation as Subaru does in recent years
The camera man breathing is on the heavy side 😉
No diff lock but still decent.
The pilot and the Ridgeline need timing chains! Why does the odyssey get a timing chain but not Pilot or Ridgeline?
I don't get the need for a 7 seat vehicle what am I running a bus service. i see so many vehicles like this every day with just one person in them, and most of the tech is just extra cost things you don't need.
8:16 I would double check with the manual that this is an appropriate recovery point. These are put here so that you can attach catch chains on trailers. I’d imagine if they can hold the weight of a trailer, they could also pull the car, but still double check.
Honda designed both the front and rear recovery points to hold twice the GVWR.
How was it like meeting Sarah-N-Tuned?
I don't think they "met", "Sarah-n-Tuned" showed the TFL guys watching her driving it!
Kase 🙂.
Have you seen the axles on the pilot they are like twigs, I don't think it's really meant for this environment all the time.
Low range? Without it you can go up things that you won’t want to come down. Sure it has descent control, but I prefer to let my transfer case do the work.
Hill Descent? Did you see that thing flying down the hill. No way that will pass.
That thing wouldn't have made it without the rocks being placed at key areas.
That "recovery point" is kind of scary. I feel like it would sheer off some bolts with any real force.
Honda please make an off road capable car that can take on jeep wranglers, toyota 4runners, and ford broncos. This is the right time to do it.
This is the best you'll get
Where are you in this video?
the. problem is for the same price you gonna be able to get a 4 runner
Bring the Subaru Ascent vs the new Honda Pilot
No way that rear hook is a recovery point, seems far too thin. More for break away chains when towing..
I've seen many reviewers quoting Honda that those are rated for twice the GVWR.
Any chance Honda would make a MallSport trim?
I wanted to see that thing scrape its way down the stairs on Broken Arrow!
I will have you know, Case… the Subaru Wilderness line has better everything! Numbers, awd, tires, etc.! So I would take a Subaru way more places than that Honda! Ntm the wilderness has damn near 2 more inches of ground clearance than even the trail sport does.
The third window on the sides just don't look right.
Your driving impressions were clearly not filmed in a Trail Sport. What did you think of the Trail Sport on the road?
So you CAN take it offroad but will damage it every time you do.
Nice Subaru...
Looks like a descent vehicle. I like that it has a regular transmission and a full size spare. Not really a fan of that particular color or the price.
A baby blue off-roader. Yuck!
It has a regular Honda 10 speed transmission and a full size spare underneath.
“More than probably your average person in a Subaru is going to hit.” 🤔. Was that an accident or a jab at the competition?
😊😊😘😘
9:55 can you a crack on the plate?
To bad they’re not going to be at dealerships for a long time
