    Man what a great video
    I didn't have to pause it 50 times and go look up all the acronyms

    I've worked out about 6000km in various directions using low earth satellites and my technician privileges.

      I thought about talking about sats, but with theme night we try to stay under 15 minutes... would have been hard to squeeze in. They deserve a video all their own. Thanks for watching, and good job!

    Great video. I'm your neighbor- from Tuscaloosa, AL. Just starting to get into radio- I'm currently just a shortwave listener who loves happening upon ham conversations. I plan on sitting for the Technician exam in a short while. Anyway great explanations, very down to earth stuff. You've earned another subscriber, pal. 👍✌

    Still studying for my technician license, and really am fascinated by all of this. Only reason I wouldn't be interested in using the internet repeaters is because if we ever had to communicate without the grid I’ll need to know how to work without it.

      Icom 7300 hands down. I guess I should ask what you want to do with it, but I use it for a base station, pota, etc. maybe not if you want a SOTA rig, but it’s a great rig

      @@K5ATA Thanks for your reply. The 7300 is on my shortlist along with the 991A, which of course would give me VHF and UHF as well. I have an HT for those bands, but I want to learn SSB, so there's that.

    • @K5ATA
      @K5ATA  3 роки тому +1

      I have heard a lot of people who like the 991a. I’m just not a Yaesu guy. I have several dead ones lying about so I’d rather not give them more of my money lol.

    • @rangersmith4652
      @rangersmith4652 3 роки тому

      @@K5ATA The original 991s had balancing issues in their finals, and many died. I've heard of no such issues with the A model.

    It's an irony. that the most difficult modes like microwave, EME and satellites are all open to Technicians. In this day and age it doesn't take much skill to stay on frequency and work the world on HF.

    • @K5ATA
      @K5ATA  3 роки тому +2

      10 meters can be a lot of fun when the band is open. If you are studying for your general, you may be better served to get an entry level HF rig instead of a standalone 10 meter rig. The cost difference is not likely all that much, and the difference is capability is major. 73, thanks for watching!

    Just got my technician license, I bought an icom ID 52 a. Probably way overdid it because I basically don’t know much about this radio stuff yet lol. But I feel like I got one of the best things for a technician? Maybe I’m totally wrong.

    • @K5ATA
      @K5ATA  8 місяців тому

      First of all, congrats on getting your tech! Second… the ID-52 is an excellent radio. I have one and absolutely love it. Take the time to learn all of its features, there are a ton. One thing I love about Icom radios is the nearby repeater function. The ID-52 has this. Basically, load repeaters into the radio via cable or card, and as you travel, you can have the radio scan the repeaters close to you automatically. If you don’t have a D-Star repeater near you, look into a hotspot. D-Star opens up a lot of the world to you via digital voice. 73, and welcome!
