A fast way to smooth styrofoam is go outside and rub it on the concrete sidewalk. It's like 80 grit and a large flat surface all in one. And don't be afraid to use the vibrating sander on those curves that file work looked painfully slow.
i wonder if you could make an anvil that light without losing hardness i mean if the thing was hollow maybe but without the weight it would move around idk maybe you could come up with something?
Anyone carving foam is cringeworthy to me now; too many memories carving in my old shop. I like using hot wire for a lot of the initial shaping, but to each their own and use what tools you have. Your final product looked great.
It never ceases to amaze me what you and Jimmy create. Genius! Pure Genius! Every time I watch you guys build some wonderful thing, I take a gift of that genius. Using the spray can to sand a radius, things like that. Simple yet so functional and thrifty. UA-cam would be crap without you guys! My grandkids are coming to stay with us for two weeks and I can't wait to freak them out with all the cool stuff you guys have taught me! Its going to be grand!
Haven't you learned anyhting from Jimmy? If something needs to be cut, you cut it on BANDSAW! Jeez! Jokes aside, the end result is pretty damn good, congrats!
This is awesome!! What liquid was added to the wood putty before putting in the foam? We won't do as good of a job, but my 7 year old wants to be a blacksmith for Halloween, and this was the best video to guide me on making an anvil he can carry around with him.
Seriously cool video! You are in good company when it comes to dealing that with uber messy foam. My current project has required that in spades! Now the anvil looks old and banged up enough for Jimmy to restore! ;)
I simply dont get this. You made a foam anvil for what purpose? All that time and effort in doing something in a horribly inefficient way to make what I'm guessing is just a decorative item? Do you realize you could have used the just the foam core to make an actual anvil? I'm guessing this must be some hipster build retro art project because I just cant understand why someone would put that much time and energy into something as useless as a foam anvil.
Once again, just a piece of art. Thums up my friend, drinking morning coffee and watching your video - its going to ne a good day. Greetings from Poland .
Awesome build!
Very cool build! Liked seeing the build up of the layers of paint/weathering to achieve the final look.
Cool glad you liked it, thank you.
Very cool. Final result was very convincing!
Great video! As a life long set and prop guy, it's really great to see some vids demonstrating our craft. Thanks

That is really cool!
That's really nice
Looks like you switched foam after the first rough cuts if I'm not mistaken.
great idea for a halloween prop, thanks
Right on, thank ou
i wonder if you could make an anvil that light without losing hardness i mean if the thing was hollow maybe but without the weight it would move around idk maybe you could come up with something?
Build it from diamonds and make it hollow
Top work
amazing work! i'm subscribing now :)

I was waiting for you to Sand cast it or something haha
I thought this video was leading up to a prank where you were going to have Jimmy catch the anvil
Good Job :-)
Thank you
I want to make this to leave it by the curb, just to mess with the scrap pickers on trash day.
How did you not drop this on Jimmy's head?! I demand a loony toons style anvil to the head or I will not give you any of my fake Internet points!
what do you use it for ?
prank someone by making them think your gonna prank someone els by dropping it on them and see what kind of reaction you get lol
what foam are you using?
Noam Maissel Dow brand foam insulation
Much easier to cut foam on a band saw.
Indeed, but I decided to work with hand tools.
Dat rust
Dem nice comments. Ha thank you!
You should build two, then go out into the street and juggle with them.
Ha! That is good.
For the love of God, use a hot wire knife and save our ears! :)
I got ear herpes listening to this video
I thought when you were cutting the foam that you were going to use a lost foam casting technique.
so did I
Same :(
same
Ryan C I will do it upstate
I was hoping you'd be making a mold out of it, then making like an aluminum anvil or something, either way, nice work. :)
me too. well you thought wrong
Seoul Peterson What can anyone do with an aluminum anvil?
1, this comment is a year old
2, what can you do with a foam anvil?
Morgan: Pick it up.
Seoul: Pick it up.
I see some ACME cartoonish pranks in the future. Cool build.
Glad I am not the only Machiavellian mind here.
Ha thank you !
That's sick!! Such great attention to detail like all your work. The gags you can pull with it are crazy !!
Ha! Thank you!!
Conn Guy Jô

Was thinking you were making a casting mold.
Guess if you did that. You'd just use the actual anvil!
Looked great at the end.
thats so badass! i would gag so many people with that!! great vid awesome job!!
Love it Super Dave! Isn't that Durhams Rock Hard Putty that best Man?! It dries SUPER fast! Have A Super Blessed Week!.....Gus
10,000 coats of paint later, "let me just paint it all black again"

Dude, that's pretty crazy :D! But you should've made the base under color silver. It'd be easier to finish off.
awesome project but I was slightly disappointed, I was hoping for a lost foam casting of an anvil. Ever thought of doing something along those lines?
An electric knife slices that stuff like butter.... I fully expected you to prank someone with that thing at the end. Great work!
Seriously cool video! You are in good company when it comes to dealing that with uber messy foam. My current project has required that in spades!
Now the anvil looks old and banged up enough for Jimmy to restore! ;)
Ha right on, thank you!
This would be cool to have hanging in a smithy shop... People would freak out seeing an anvil hanging by a thin wire overhead lol
interesting idea, you could throw a person and he was afraid!
Have you ever considered buying an electric cutter ? that would make your life totally easier and i dont think they are that expensive
Excellent workmanship. It would fool a blacksmith, who didn't see this video.
Now make a wooden one
You didn't even harden it! I bet the rebound is shit (Awesome work!)
I can't believe how good that looks! Could you make me a sports car and a girlfriend?
An ACME Anvil that even Wile E. Coyote would approve. Nicely done.
Cool project! Nice paint job!
Thank you !
This is so freaking cool!!! I love it and wanna try this technic... I was there when you were about half way...
I loved the end ahahah!!!
Thanks bro!
Very realistic. I thought you were gonna play a trick on Jimmy.
Two more and learn to juggle
i was going to vomit at foam cutting part
gitti kulağım
I surprised that the water putty worked. I heard it doesn't do well in very thin coats.
oooh i'm watching this !! and there are 100 thousands who watched this!!!!!!!!!!
Have you tried pounding out any foam knives on it yet?
How will it hold up ?
I hope it doesn't get accidentally destroyed for looking so realistic.
Would have been funny as hell for a prank with jimmy
I bet you'll never EVER want to work with Styrofoam again xD I hate working with the stuff....gets everywhere :(
Aw man- it sure does. I was itchy too.
David Waelder Yep...turned out very nice though and that is always rewarding; makes it worth it :)
Thank you!!
David Waelder Yep! no problemo
That turned out great! It was the paint job that really sold it as a real anvil.
Did anyone else have to watch this without sound? Argh cringe
Anvil along with stones and saws is good old fashioned STUPID
AWESOME!!!
Loving you're videos.
Thank you!
Perfect lost foam "pattern" :)
Good job BTW.
lol man did it turn out good or what! looks amazing :)

David Waelder Thumbs up on that reply!
Amazing work, but....WHY?
Thumbs up on this one!!! Nice project and great detailing. !!!
And you built this why. ??? For some kind of stage prop. ??
Thank you- just a funny prop
How do you make your glasses not fog up when using a dust mask
Would a hot knife of worked well for parts of that build?
Its just for fooling around in family parties
Once again, just a piece of art. Thums up my friend, drinking morning coffee and watching your video - its going to ne a good day. Greetings from Poland .
I love that- glad you enjoy! Thank you
I was hoping you'd get someone to drop it on your head.
you should have used that foam anvil for a cast of a real one
A hot wire foam cutter will make you life a lot easier.
I would play many devious jokes with this. Many.
I can't understand why you made it ???????
Just Awesome! I love to watch artists create!
Now you need a VERY strong table to put it on
Good news to Will E. Coyote! Great work!
Model airplane makers use this stuff, They use a hot wire to cut it and no dust and also use a bandsaw with little dust and great accuracy and speed.
Ben Youmans
Matthias Wandel would build a hotwire bandsaw....
In the style of theater sets and movies ...
Great job !!!
Cool, thank you
Look like a very cool project.you should get some pictures of it with a little kid holding it . Or see if someone would help the kid pick it up
That's funny, we will make some fun with it somehow. Thanks for the comment!
You make it look so easy :) Very cool.
+Elbow Grease I thank you
Now... make a sand negative and cast a steel one.
I thought you where going to do a lost fome cast
still so confused about why...
why not just make a mold and cast it in aluminium
That is why it says prop anvil because it's fake calm down everyone hating
+J C good eye mate! Thanks haha . I'm just trying to have some fun.
Dude I gotta tell ya that is fantastic👍
Love this build. I have never seen anyone make something like this
+Tamma Strongbear thank you strong bear!
Sir,
what are the dimensions of the form board? Can it be found at Building Centers?
+Sharklops right on!! Thanks for adding great info !! I love this place !
Always a pleasure to watch your work. Outstanding job again!
Glad you dig - thanks!
I like how you put your name on it. Now I'm inspired to make one and put the name acme on one and hang it up really high.
Excellent! Thank you.
Durahams the makers friend :)
I really liked what you did there at the end of the video whee jimmy was hammering! Great shot :D
Thank you!
Like that anvil. Is it for sale?
This is awesome and hilarious.
Fantastic. Congratulations.
awesome :D
