I'm not sure if you read the comments, but if you do, I just want to say thank you and also I'm sorry. I started watching your videos on a whim but I'm glad I did. You've changed my mind about Catholicism. I grew up in south Arkansas where there were very few Catholics. I always thought that Catholics were all alcoholics, cussed like sailors and saw images of people in their grease traps or grilled cheese (sad but true). You've really opened my eyes and now I'm interested in learning more. Thanks for being so open and putting yourself out there. You've made a difference
Clickbaiting, eh? I think Mother Angelica would have done the same. She'd be proud of what you are doing in this genre of the Media. May she rest in the bossom of the Father in Heaven.
I also felt like leaving when you mentioned you were a student of vat II But decided to give you a chance I learned that most of what came after was a product of vat II Basically as B Fulton Sheen said in one of his famous episodes There’s a danger in missing the point of true compassion and false compassion Having lived these last thirty terrifying years I believe most of it was brought about by false compassion ? And I can’t seem to shake off the belief that vat II was in a way the source of All the carnage of innocents. I realize vat II was feel good intentions But being an old timer cradle Catholic I lived these changes In our once holy ROMAN apostolic church My neighbor also catholic asked me AL why don’t you attend church at the baptist church Accross the street? It’s closer and the food there is as good as St Cabrini? To me it was the nail that told me the truth in a nutshell about the results Of vat II
Erium Why are you threatened by religion if you don’t believe it? Why do you care what I believe? Just because you had a bad experience does not mean you should project that onto all religion. The answer is to study it more - so you can say more than that “it’s stupid.” Make a good argument if you want people to believe what you say. Study.
@@agreatanomaly2457 because the ridiculous things you believe affect others.. because whether or not something is true is of great importance... Religion is a cancer.
I really appreciate you...you are so real but the faith is the center of your life..there is nothing for sane than true Catholic spirituality and I have seen the dark side which is simply the absence of love and condemnation of anyone different
Now that you're a Franciscan Priest. Could you please explain the difference between your order of priesthood and diocesan priesthood. And whether diocesan priests get to travel for missions like you do. Please do respond 🙏 It'll be much appreciated.
You're awesome! I just found this literally procrastinating while I was supposed to be working lol... just like you were talking about. Keep up this ministry! We need more voices like yours!
Hello Brother Casey. Thank you for your interesting videos! I apologise in advance for the wall of text below :) I am an atheist who (still) agree with most of the points you attempt to refute here, but I do find it very interesting to hear your thoughts on them. I watch your content to improve my understanding of Catholic tradition and theology. I also consider you as a good "steel man" for Christian thought. When I think about something I consider problematic in Christian theology my new reaction is: "how would brother Casey interpret this?" Much of the religious UA-cam content I've seen otherwise is downright horrifying (such as followers of Ken Ham and similar fundamentalists), so your channel is a pleasant exception. English isn't my native language so I apologise if I'm not expressing myself clearly.
I loved this. You truly have a depth to you through an openness of mind that I was not expecting to find (the poet in me peeks out). Truly, the Franciscans are lucky to have you. I rather see the Franciscans as a breath of invigorating air. Certainly, their largely unstructured retreats have given me the place, the spiritual space in which to be creative.
You troll us Br! hahaha You fall into a clickbait and then used the same clickbait to get us in to your video hahaha awesome! But it was a great analysis of that article!
Haha yes, well, in my defense, it was only 1/2 clickbait: these ARE legitimate ways in which religion can cause more harm that good... we should just be able to rise above them.
mm m Thank you for sharing your opinions! I am not a monk, I am a Franciscan friar, someone who is committed precisely to going out to evangelize. I suggest you take a look at some of my other videos and learn a bit more. And I honestly have no idea about your 18-year old comment. Was it just meant to be mean? This is a channel devoted to evangelization and catechesis. Have I even mentioned an old girlfriend in a single video?
Breaking In The Habit religion is a virtue of justice due God. Religion is not the problem it is men who do not live out the virtue of religion that are the problem and cause harm. Religion in its self, of it is true is the only means to a peaceful world. A religion that is false is a cult and causes much harm. Religion is not an institution or a social construct, it is that which man uses as a vehicle to ascend to God, and of that is the case then their can only be one way and only one true religion.
Speaking of Wikipedia... you can start on a random article and click on the first non-trivial link... and then on that article click on the first non-trivial link... and so on. It will eventually lead you to the article on Philosophy.
:o, I admire you for being able to look at the article in that way. Usually I'm open to hear or discuss arguments in a constructive way, but when something is made clearly just for harm and distorts us with the straw man fallacy, I prefer to just look to other way. Unfortunately, it's uncommon to hear these kind of stuff in an fair or constructive way.
New subscriber here. I'm a Pantheist, to me god is something closer to the Tao, the Force of Star Wars (as described in New Hope by Obi Wan Kenobi, not the bugs in your bloodstream nonsense), the silent awareness you find in meditative contemplation that doesn't care about who you sleep with or the color of your skin or sexual identity. I'm one of those guys that tends to be highly critical of organized religion, even if I find the mystics of all traditions intriguing and inspiring. That all said, I'm really enjoying your channel, and find it refreshing to see an ordained member of the Catholic Church willing to come out and admit that the tradition has its flaws and problems and is not some perfect monolith.
Hi Frank, thanks for sharing. I've never met a pantheist. If you wouldn't mind, could you share a bit more. How did you come upon this way of faith? How does this faith explain the origin of being? And what moral or ethical response does one have when following this faith?
Breaking In The Habit Hi! Just found this and saw your comment. Just want to say its great to see a fellow Christian with such an open mind, who doesn't just say hey your wrong and burn in hell, but instead seems open and curious about their beliefs. Been thinking about becoming a Franciscan, and you sir have convinced me it's time. But I'm in Western Australia so rip me.
Breaking In The Habit It comes largely out of experience and study of various traditions. The moral ethical aspect is less by commandments and more an understanding of the interconnected nature of all things that requires a practice of harmlessness towards all things because all things are in a sense part of me. From my understanding evolution and science are the best methods we have of understanding the physical world and its origins, but it doesn't explain everything and in fact the need to know the origin in a sense gets in the way of the fact that I'm here now, and my obligation is to the world as it is, not as it was or I wish it would be. Sorry if this is a bit disconnected. Writing this on my phone and I've never been much good at writing long form on it. Hope this answers your question.
Tribalism even exists among catholic parishes. In my city, there was tension between parishes in terms of fundraising. Can't have a lower steeple than the neighbours!
Point 3 was off. What Christianity has devoted to the poor and those in need compared to groups founded on Atheistic principles does not even compare. There are certain generous Atheists. However, Christian generosity actually should embarrass those who clutch to Atheism and claim Christians are close-minded.
I think all institutions are susceptible for corruption.... Humans are humans, capable of doing both good or bad. To say that religions do more harm than good can also be applicable to culture and government.....
Ya know I was laughed at in high school for saying that you can see the works of the Almighty everywhere and from the strangest places, but in your search to reason with an unreasonable clickbait article you've found a bit of truth that brought you closer to the eminence and thus have brought all who wish to listen to this video a little closer too. That's cool and I'm glad to see that the discourse of the ages yet continues.
So was the lumen gentium before or after the inquisition? I ask because i specifically remember something about the church torturing people to confess and or convert along with killing those who refused. That's an honest question. I'm not trying to troll you. I'm asking you to explain the clear contradiction between what you said on video, and what history has shown.
It's nice, for a change, to hear a religious person who can argue his case and even criticize his religion in a calm and reasoned manner. Far too many start screaming and foaming at the mouth at the slightest criticism.
I thought this was very good. And, from an academic standpoint, I would have credited the author of the original article you used with a link in the description.
Created tribalism is just one negatives of religion. People from religious homes are taught from birth, to believe what they "feel" and to disregard science and evidence. People like this are easily manipulated and "duped". We are experiencing the consequences of this phenom in the U.S. right now, with the "Trump Cult". Religion does do some positive things, at least the "Orthodox" versions of the religions do. Considering all, I think that the "fundamentalist" versions of the major religions do as much harm as the Orthodox versions of the major religions do that are positive. Overall, I'd have to say it's a wash. Better off with or without it? Perhaps, slightly better off with it. But it's a close call. There's a Thesis for someone looking for a subject.
Wait, did he just present a church that, after hundreds of years, still does, not allow women as priests, as being open to progress? Checks 4:02. Yep, he most definitely did.
To be fair, I think it's important to know a lot of things about a lot of things. Sometimes I think I know too much. I am (hopefully) going into a retreat for my alcoholism and it's ensuing problems. It's similar to monastic life but as a lay person and you commit to working in the community with a Christian ethic. My family have asked if I'm worried about committing a year or two but I need fixing. I've worked hard in the past but now I'm a bit broken. I want to get back and help others because I've walked this road for too long. I know how it goes down into the dark and I'd like to know how it rises back into the light so I can help someone else. Your videos are always an inspiration. Thank you.
My opinion: "Radical" Muslims are not Muslims. People using Christ for profits are not Christian. Nor are people who use religion to justify hatred, especially when they don't obey all rules of their religion. These people are merely people using relgion as an excuse to be tyrants. Real religious people try their best to follow their religious principles, and try to become better people because of their religion. They try to love others and share love, rather than using it for hatred like the aforementioned people are.
Joseph Gallagher This is an old comment but I totally agree! I’ve had so many friends reject God because of how ‘Christians’ treated them. These ‘Christians’ are turning people away from the faith, and God does not like when you cause others to stumble in their relationship to Him.
I subbed, I'm not religious and I'm very much against it(although religion is an interesting concept) but it's nice to see a religious person with a brain, when articles like that come out it's almost always from an outsiders perspective, it's natural to say & think that your religion/group/relationship is the greatest thing in the world but ignore the observations of others, outsiders see things that insiders can't, I agree that religions like Christianity and Catholicism gets a lot of shit because of.... Certain activities priests indulge in and because of this it reflects (very) poorly on the majority, the article could have simply put that it was 1. Their opinion(it sounded as if it was fact) 2. It was based on observations and how their encounters with religious people went.
I agree with you on all points. I would only add that “priestly activities” isn’t the only point against them. There is 2000 years the genocide, torture, enslavement, crusades, row v Wade…
2:56 I don't think muslims believe in the same god. They believe in a god that shares some of our God's characteristics, but as said Ravi Zacharia : "we believe they believe in a God apparently different but deeply the same, but it is the contrary : they believe in a god which is deeply different and apparently identical".
I guess it's like asking a Democrat and a Republican who America's last president was. They'd tell you the same name, but give wildly different descriptions of his character and actions.
I don’t understand how Our God and the god of muslims can be one and the same. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against muslims, I even know some great people who are muslims, but I fail to understand how the God of the catholic faith and theirs can be one and the same. It just does not make sens. They do not believe Jesus was the son of God, nor the Jesus was crucified... explain to me please how he could be the same God. If that is the teachings we are to take back from Vatican II, well then I am gravely concerned. Jesus knows everyone’s heart, and he is the ultimate judge, I have no business judging others. I am really confused however if we are talking about the same God all across the line.
Jesus was quite clear however, we need to believe that he is the Son of God, and He is God together with the Holy Spirit. One God in three persons, if I understood correctly.
The question is not whether we define God in the same way but rather if we are talking about the same God. We obviously believe in the Trinity, in the divinity of Christ, etc. and they do not. But neither do Jews. Jews do not believe in Jesus or the Holy Spirit, but we both believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the God of the Law and the prophets; the God who created the world and everything in it; the God who acts with mercy and justice. Christians, Jews, and Muslims have a very different understanding of who this God is, but we believe it is the same God who did all of those things.
Breaking In The Habit. Thank you for your quick response. Then why would God manifest himself again to undo what he did? To me it makes no sens and is contradictory. Jesus is the Way... He said it himself. He gave clear teachings and not all accepted them or believed in Him. He made the ultimate sacrifice. Up to him, the timeline makes sens... There were the jews, Jesus came. Why would God come 5 or 6 hundred years later to start a new religion. I just don’t see it.
Because God so honors our free will and desires our free choice to love God in return that he doesn't want to force us into it. If God were to come again, make everything clear, and "prove" everything, there would be no room for faith... it would just be a verifiable fact, and people can't choose to believe in facts, they just are. By leaving some ambiguity God calls us to continue our relationship, to keep seeking.
@@claudettevoyer2593 God didn't start the new religion, Mohammed did. If you actually read the Islamic scriptures it is apparent that it is not from God. Please look up acts17 apologetics for more info. Even though we are ll searching for God, they have deviated and taken a turn backwards towards an angry tribalistic understanding of GOD.
Let's not forget how many books with information were burned in the name of religuon. Why did my parents have to sign papers to allow the school to teach me evolution in school when I was a kid. Many kids parents did not sign those papers.
Why would god communicate with his creation in such a way that his words could be used to abuse the faithful? If he is all knowing, he knows that his current communications are going to be bastardized. If he is all powerful, then he is able to communicate with his creation in such a way that his words wouldn’t be subject to interpretation by false leaders.
my my, I feel you are the model that all servants of God should be like. I am not christian but I do believe in something greater then myself, I really respected the openness in what you viewed as logical fallacies that some churches fall into.
St. Francis of Assisi desired to follow Jesus Christ and he wanted to always live according to the Gospel. One of the most profound ways that St. Francis came to know and follow Jesus was through the Scriptures. The writings of St. Francis include texts from the Scriptures. He quoted passages of scriptures and alluded to them with ease. The words of the Bible were so deep within St. Francis; it was almost as if they became a part of him. He embraced God’s Word and lived by them! St. Francis even insisted that when the friars saw scraps of paper they should pick them up, just in case the Word of God was written on them. An early event in the life of St. Francis occurred when Francis opened the Book of the Gospels in the Church of St. Nicholas. St. Francis and Br. Bernard of Quintavalle opened the Gospel three times, and read the first passages they came across. They based their whole life on what they read! “If you wish to be perfect, go, and sell all your possessions, and give to the poor…come follow me” (Matthew 19:21). “Take nothing for your journey, neither staff not knapsack, shoes nor money” (Luke 9:3). “If any man will come after me, let him renounce self, take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24) They showed trust and confidence by basing the whole rule of their life on these passages that they believed God chose for them. It was really important to me when I learned about St. Francis and his use of the Bible. I’d like to be able to have a similar love that Francis has for the scriptures. The ideals of the scriptures were expressed through St. Francis’s love of God and his neighbor, especially the poor. Seeing and understanding what the Scriptures are meant to teach is what I want to accomplish. St. Francis looked at the Bible as guidelines to living life in a way that is morally good in the eyes of the Lord. Knowing this is very meaningful to me, because I now see that if I spend time with what is said in the Bible’s passages, I will be able to interpret it in a way that is personal and unique to me. St. Francis shows me that if I spend time with God and the Bible, it will allow me to find out what God wants me to do.
Whenever I start to waver in my thinking I look at these "Followers of God" in the comments and it reaffirms my lack of "Faith". They don't just harass others, they harass their own and it's beyond sad. Keep it up guys, you've become experts at driving people away from your so-called "God". I Love this channel which is the sad part. I could never be a part of a system where it's people treat each other the way I'v seen, been treated and the examples below.
One can only hope that nothing is ever judged by the UA-cam comments associated with it. While it shows that there are definitely people within the faith that are filled with anger, misunderstanding, and even hate, a look at the world would show that the number of people doing tremendous things and living with love far outweighs the negative. Find me a perfect organization in which everyone fully abides by the group's teachings, treats everyone with respect, is inclusive, loving, and self-reflective... and I'll show you the Kingdom of God. Short of that, we live as a mixed bag.
It's based on a combination of things with most of it drawing from my everyday life. It's understandable that there are a few bad apples but when most of the people you meet are the bad apples the perception at least for me is that there are more bad apples than good apples. When people stand outside abortion clinics harassing people going in instead of trying to show any measure of compassion. Those people need help not to be berated. While this is just one example I've seen with my own eyes it seems to be the standard of behavior. There is this weird "You are with us or against us" mentality. So many "Believers" cast stones as if they are free of sin. I can't imagine how anyone would want to live in a snake pit like that. The hypocrisy of the "Followers" is beyond ridiculous. With that being said, I want to believe. I do, there are many things in this world that I don't understand. There is this feeling tugging not at just my heart but my mind. I admire the Catholic church for everything they have done and do. The blend of science with religion is amazing, proving they can coexist. I'm honestly Jealous of the people that can live a life of Faith. They seem so happy, so content and driven. They feel like someone has their back in a world that's just looking to stab you in it any time you turn around. I'm truly envious of that. I don't think I've wanted anything so badly in my life as I want to be apart of that. Sadly though it's the community that ruins it all for me. The so-called "Believers". There are good people out there yes but they are so often drowned out by the bad people who view themselves as good. Maybe one day Casey, maybe one day I'll see. For now, though I doubt it. As long as this cycle of hypocritical hatred continues it will only be that much harder. Peace be with you, always. I enjoy your channel and your message and I am surprised and grateful you took time out of your day to read and reply to my message. I cannot deny that I was moved by that.
The only “bad religion” I’ve experienced is from human priests in the Catholic Faith! I have been yelled at from an inebriated priest and a gay priest and a priest who demanded “Absolute Authority” to what he said or were NOT Catholic and t leave church, and belittled in front of others, because I was not walking up to the pulpit and genuflecting at the right time. This happened at Every Catholic Church I attended when I moved to Washington State. I realize that priests, with their theological training, which I believe includes psychology and probably sociology type courses to become adept (hopefully) in working with people, should be a bit more respectful and compassionate in dealing with parishioners even if they are having an off day. I would always try to be respectful, as I feel most of those in the congregation would also. However, I will not tolerate being made to feel like a fool or an idiot in front of others! If a person requires “correction” in a situation, it is best done privately. I looked for the closest faith I could find to Catholicism that I could find, and thanks to Henry the VIIIth, that was the Episcopalian/Anglican faith. As I knew I was not going to keep going to a church where I felt like a “reject” from the and getting communion, I was received into Episcopal faith, where everyone is welcomed and nobody is made to feel awful. I hope you don’t think badly of me for this. However, growing up in an abused family and being treated horribly by my mother until the day she passed away, has turned me into a stubborn and rebellious and independent person. Although I was born Jewish I was drawn toward Christianity since childhood. I finally converted as an adult, although before RICA. Even after 2 failed marriages, I didn’t get the chance for an annulment through the church, as my Ex changed his faith from Catholicism to another Christian tradition and refused to have anything to do with the process, and I didn’t have the money. I was never able to have children due to a physically abnormality, and I never hid this from him. Anyway, in my 70s, I’m too old.
I have a feeling that you reside in Chicago. How does someone contact you to have a great conversation. I have so many questions and you seem so open minded
Hello, glad I found this video. I am a pagan. I wasn’t raised Roman Catholic, but spent much of my youth wanting to join the Benedictine order. I comment in peace. Yet, with respect, I disagree with you. Unfortunately, I view religion as the #1 cause of all human troubles. It is a byproduct of the suspension of disbelief. The same instinct allows us to watch a movie and believe for a while that the characters are real. The problem is that humans cannot agree on which imaginary character we want to believe in for our god/s or deity. I understand the importance of religion to the development of civilization. But take the Americas for example. Pre-colonialism, Mother Earth had a paradise rich in resources and abundance. Life was everywhere. Then came the Christians. Hundreds of billions of lives (not just humans) slaughtered in the name of religion, natural resources plundered and destroyed. I have a list of people like me on my wall to remind me that good Christians people, set people like me on fire. 400 years ago, you might have burned me at the stake. Legally. That’s just one of thousands of examples. The excuse is always the same, “those Christians were wrong, we’re different now.” Anyways, I wish you peace, but I can’t forget what religion/Christianity is responsible for. No charity can return this planet to what it was pre-Christianity, or return the billions of lives lost.
The Israel of God (People of God) are not the physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel but those who, with Abraham the believer, believe in the promises of God now disclosed in Christ, whether they are Jews or Gentiles. This is according to what the Bible states and obviously not what Pope Francis says...Romans 9:8 ..That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed, through the crucified Christ.
Hi! Thanks for this very informative video. I noticed you mentionned Muslims and Jews believe in the same God. That's what I thought but then I read contradictory information so I'm a bit confused. Could you please explain this to me? Or even better, make a video about this one day? :) Take care!
I'm an atheist, I heavily dislike religions but that doesn't mean I can't be reasoned with, sure religions is what brought humanity together and what created civilization and society, but religion is also what has caused 99% of all wars across the world, and in this informed and scientific world we live in now, religion serves no purpose. Sure religion makes people feel at home, secure, and that there's a purpose for them. But the reality is, God isn't real, never has been, and never will be. Religion keeps people happy during tough times but in the modern world where the commonwealth is increasing and diseases and wars are very rare, all religion does is misguide people. Not only that but it gives ppl something to blame their faults and issues on, because "God has a plan for me". I might just be a bit short-sighted so please be welcome to inform me if there's something I've missed.
1. Can the same logic used here to debunk the "logically bankrupt" arguments against religion be applied to debunk the Church's arguments against contraception and/or abortion? For example, the fact (or truth?) that some people use contraceptives for immoral purposes doesn't mean contraceptives should be banned or deemed immoral by the Church. 2. I am more concerned if the force of good vigorously battles the evil within our religious communities or does it choose to be complicit to keep the name of the religion "good." Does the Church vigorously force out those who abuse its power or choose to be complicit so that the number of congregants won't dwindle?
Hi Ned, I'm not sure that I understand your questions so feel free to ignore this response and clarify what you're asking. First thing is that there is a very large difference between contraception and abortion, and I'm not sure how exactly they fit into the same category. Both are obviously forbidden by the Church, but abortion is much more grave in nature. Second, the church does not outright ban the use of contraceptives, it simply says that using with the primary intent to prevent a pregnancy is immoral. Some have had to take medicines or contraceptive pills for health reasons, inadvertently causing one to be infertile or sterile, and this is perfectly fine. As for your second question, I'm not sure what you're asking. Please clarify.
1. Let us speak solely of contraceptives. While many people may use contraceptives to prevent pregnancy so that they can live a promiscuous life, others many use it to prevent pregnancy because they are simply not ready to be parents yet, and their reason can be something other than threat to health. Why ban it simply because "some bad apples"? If you don't think it's logical to call religion bad simply because there have been "bad apples" in organized religions, why apply the terrible logic to church policies? Isn't it double-standard? 2. From what I extrapolate from what you say in the video, it seems that you believe that it is unfair and illogical to deny the value of something good even though evil exists in it. Do you think we can apply the same logic to those who believe in the equality of LGBTQ people, same-sex marriage, or even those who subscribe to feminism or even atheism? Our Lord teaches: "Do to others as you would have them do to you." If we do not want to be accused falsely based on "logically bankrupt" arguments, then are we avoiding doing that to those who are different from us? 3. I personally love the religious communities I've been blessed to encounter and associate with in my life. So, I hope you won't take this personally. The purpose of my questions here is not to attack church polity or church politics but to make sure there is NO double standard when we examine criticisms or questions that come from those who deny or are skeptical of the value of (organized) religions. 4. I think the second point of my last comment wasn't meant to be a question. I think it was meant to share with you my frustration that a great number of faith communities that I know -- Catholic or Protestant -- can't stand the test of our Lord's Golden Rule. When facing evil amongst themselves, they often choose to turn a blind eye or even cover up just to maintain the facade of "holiness," and yet *they don't hesitate to criticize those who question our beliefs or simply choose NOT to believe at all by using the faulty logic they previously so despise*, or *even call those who disagree or believe differently evil or ridiculous*. This often aches my heart. Yet, all I can do is pray and keep myself from committing such hypocrisy. 5. I wish you peace and will continue to keep you in my prayers. I hope one day I will find a religious community I can join, but I am not holding my hopes high.
The Catholic Church is replete with priest against priest, each doing what they believed were God's will. Freedom of will has always been for everyone, but not for everyone. God is what each person believes God is to each of them. That why churches don't really work. Martin Luther was an example of this when he opposed paying indulgence. The Catholic Church was wrong on this, so he said. No church really has its people in one mind. Some members of the same church will disagree among the other. Should mads be held in Latin or not? This was a big issue among Catholic authorities years ago. I was present living in the Catholic Church at the time, during that argument. In fact, it's still an argument today. Each person believes they know what God wants. Churches are divided and will separate within time. Is Jesus the Son of God? Once this was a great argument in the history of the Catholic Church. This lead to a division in the church, even to violence in some cases. You remember? The Council of Nicea, abou 325 - 327 AD. So, who's is of one mind? Which church is true? Each church claims to be true. Many people believe God has a mission for them. Do you believe this?
Truth cannot contradict truth. If we find something to be true through scientific inquiry (using our senses and rationality) then it is true and we must try to reconcile it with what we find true through other means (theology, philosophy, art, sociology, etc.) ua-cam.com/video/XXM5Qk_XsXk/v-deo.html
I maintain many of my Catholic beliefs but am totally interfaith. This is why I attended an interfaith seminary and was a student of a wonderful teacher (s) Rabbi Joseph H. Gelberman. There is no monopoly on God. Thank you, brother, for this video.
When you boil it down, religions offer a very enticing product - a guarantee of some form of higher existence. But you must have sufficient 'faith' or your religious and spiritual practice will come to nothing, or in other words you must be sufficiently brainwashed. Those two together guarantee the success of religion and that religions won't go away any time soon.
We all have a God-shaped void, that we try to fill with counterfeits that only Jesus Christ can fill.. he wants a relationship and fellowship with us. He loves us and wants to spend eternity in heaven with us. We need to be sorry to God for what the Bible says is sin. Only once we realize we're lost can we be saved by trusting and the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He shed his blood for us taking our sins upon him, and he gives us his righteousness when we put our trust in his finished work on the cross, asking him to forgive us and save our souls from hell.
Very good commentary. Who better to learn how to improve from or what your failings are than from your critics. All of humanity, not just the Religious, suffer from Ego and a feeling of Knowing more than we really do. I learn most when God dishes me a large bowl of humility.
I mostly agree with everything he say but the notion that we can't do anything without God (or their religion's idea of God is wrong). Mind me, I'm a believer yet I don't agree with it.
I wonder why there are only mechanically translated korean subtitles in this video (and I'm not Korean...). Is it something you have set up, Br. Casey? By the way, wonder if you know about the possibility to let us add subtitles and/or translations to your videos? Greetings from Germany:)
Breaking In The Habit Hum, still strange, just checked my settings again. :D May I ask, do you know Taizé in France? I don't know how known it is in the world (my friends experiences are quite unequal), but it's a wonderful place :)
Breaking In The Habit It is indeed... I have been to Taizé three times yet, once as a volunteer for 6 weeks, and it really formed my relationship to both faith and the church, it's the place where I got to *feel* Christianity for the first time and most intensively. Great to hear that you know it too!
i was a victim of the Biblicans but my faith in the Lord is still in tact ! They killed my sister by withholding medical care from her as she was dying of cancer at 26 ......" WHO DO YOU BELIEVE SISTER THE DOCTORS OR THE LORD????? "
Oh that's really sad! I was in a similar situation one month back but being a medical student ,I was able to fight for my sister's medication..I am soo happy that your faith is intact.. As it is said, even Christ was attacked by the religious but our faith is in Christ and not people❤️
The very Passion itself makes the statement that most religious people are troublemakers; only the religious wanted Christ crucified. Pagans like Pontius Pilate couldn't care less and even sought to save Christ. Consider all the people of the Temple who were afraid to confess Christ. Consider those erstwhile followers who left Christ in John 6 after he talked about "eating" his flesh. Out of thousands of "religious" people, Christ only had 11 followers who were deeply sincere. A study in the Soviet Union discovered that only 5% of those attending church exhibited any attitude or lifestyle different from those who did not attend church. Without knowing the facts, many people will throw that study away since they "know" the Soviet government was not interested in truth (which doesn't explain their scientific advances). Personally, I'm glad they found 5%. Years later I read that only 4% of Catholics believe in the Church's teaching on contraception. Wow. Who would have guessed? Like the Christ-crucifying Pharisees and their mass of followers (Matthew 27:20), religion for most people is nothing more than a cheap and easy path to self-promotion. In that respect, they are more like Cain than Abel.
Pros: If you are Atheist, You won't be tested by God But if you're christian, you will be tested Cons: You have to rely on fellow humans You can rely on an IMMORTAL SUPERNATURAL creator
Got a question for you in case you still check your youtube comments still. Are you an atheist now? I genuinely believe faith is a negative thing. I was raised in a moderately catholic community and quickly moved to atheism upon seeing the problems religion causes in many, many other areas of the world. Because religion in my area does not do bad things, doesnt mean it doesnt do this in other areas. I din’t think faith is necessarily bad, people can gain strength from it. The problem, I believe, stems in organized religion.
It's not a "costume". It's a way of dressing that MEANS something ri thre people wearing it and the people observing it. The same is true of most decisions involving dressing. If anything, the way religious people dress is more like a uniform than a costume.
thank you for not going for apologetic and on the defense. on youtube there are people who advocate the "bad religion" because of their fundamentalism. not just of Christianity, people like ken ham and nephilimfree, but also of Muslim extremist and other extreme points of view, and seeing the moderate kind of religion on this platform does a lot, and that comes from someone who does not believe in god. people are capable of doing nasty stuff, not just in name of a god. and yes you always have a choice, the goal does NOT justify the means.
I'm going outside at winter in sandals but I'm not a friar...it's 46°F, but I guess I just like it. My feet don't seem to get that cold. Mind you, I'm not crazy, if it was, say, 32°, I'd put on socks (LOL)!!!
I also felt like leaving when you mentioned you were a student of vat II
But decided to give you a chance
I learned that most of what came after was a product of vat II
Basically as B Fulton Sheen said in one of his famous episodes
There’s a danger in missing the point of true compassion and false compassion
Having lived these last thirty terrifying years
I believe most of it was brought about by false compassion ?
And I can’t seem to shake off the belief that vat II was in a way the source of
All the carnage of innocents. I realize vat II was feel good intentions
But being an old timer cradle Catholic I lived these changes
In our once holy ROMAN apostolic church
My neighbor also catholic asked me
AL why don’t you attend church at the baptist church
Accross the street?
It’s closer and the food there is as good as St Cabrini?
To me it was the nail that told me the truth in a nutshell about the results
Of vat II
Religion is stupid and anyone who believes in it is gullible
Donald Gorth wow. You need to go back and study some more. This time, avoid the bumper sticker solutions.
Thanks!
"Faith does not contradict reason or science or conscience. It builds upon them to come to a higher level of understanding."
Thank you,
can you make more 'a friar life" episodes?
I would love to! Unfortunately, it's just difficult to travel while I'm in school. Hopefully in the future!
And some from Phoenix and St Barbara.
Now that you're a Franciscan Priest. Could you please explain the difference between your order of priesthood and diocesan priesthood. And whether diocesan priests get to travel for missions like you do.
Please do respond 🙏
It'll be much appreciated.
@@BreakingInTheHabit You got to talk to Fr. Mark Goring.
Bro Casey .... continue the good work ! Your insight on how religion can be tribal is spot on.
You're awesome! I just found this literally procrastinating while I was supposed to be working lol... just like you were talking about. Keep up this ministry! We need more voices like yours!
Hello Brother Casey. Thank you for your interesting videos!
I apologise in advance for the wall of text below :)
I am an atheist who (still) agree with most of the points you attempt to refute here, but I do find it very interesting to hear your thoughts on them.
Same!
me too
Well said. Your videos do a wonderful service to bring light to Catholic teaching and the OFM.
I agree. He is very brilliant.
Sorry that i ask
But what means OFM or what is it?
I hope I get a answer
Order of Friars Minor
Ofm stands for - only fondles minors... The Catholic church is a disgusting organisation and anyone in it should be embarrassed
B 21 I’m sorry you feel that way. I’ll pray for you and your heart. God bless
This video might have been clickbait but it was so full of wisdom. May God bless you.
Love the videos brotha, praying for your ministry! Keep them coming!
You troll us Br! hahaha You fall into a clickbait and then used the same clickbait to get us in to your video hahaha awesome! But it was a great analysis of that article!
Francisco Redondo eai br
Hey, I went to UChicago, right down the street from where he studied! My mom stayed there when she visited.
Well said
Being so sincere about procrastination! Oh my! You just became my best friend!
Brilliant. Lol. Good one, Brother! Scared the crap out of me when I saw the title, but as usual a good insight.
Always worth throwing a curveball now and again!
I think all institutions are susceptible for corruption....
Humans are humans, capable of doing both good or bad. To say that religions do more harm than good can also be applicable to culture and government.....
Well done Casey! Eagerly anticipating your book. God bless.
Wow why haven't I paid any attention to your videos?
I don't know! Fix that!
God Bless you in your vocational journey! Keep up the awesome work you are doing.
Religion is necessary, else we would be immersed in materialism, relativism, love to the money,..
I have never heard a priest quote logical fallacy and state openly that agnostics are brothers of the faith. A very interesting video indeed.
Did you study or have a different major before going into seminary?
Am i wrong for believing in some evolution and believing in God?
Joseph Gallagher well said and I totally agree on all this
Joseph Gallagher This is an old comment but I totally agree!
Certain activities priests indulge in and because of this it reflects (very) poorly on the majority, the article could have simply put that it was
1. Their opinion(it sounded as if it was fact)
Wrong. Both the Christian and Muslim gods are based in the old testament.. so yeah... Same god.
Thank you my dear friend. God bless you Fr. Cassey for all your work
Let's not forget how many books with information were burned in the name of religuon. Why did my parents have to sign papers to allow the school to teach me evolution in school when I was a kid. Many kids parents did not sign those papers.

"Religion began when the first scoundrel met the first fool." - Voltaire
Religion must be constrained by morality. Nobody burns people at the stake today-because it is morally wrong.
Has religion invented anything good?
Morals were around beforehand
my my, I feel you are the model that all servants of God should be like.
“If any man will come after me, let him renounce self, take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24)
They showed trust and confidence by basing the whole rule of their life on these passages that they believed God chose for them.
Great job on that topic...congrats on completing your semester too !

I want to ask you how you can wear sandals and no socks? I can’t wear sandals because my feet get cold. Keep up the good work!
I can, but I never like to! There is technically no rule about what we have to wear and many guys wear shoes or boots on a regular basis.
At 7:06, you said "Let's *not* prove them right"
Which I couldn't help but briefly chuckle at.
The excuse is always the same, “those Christians were wrong, we’re different now.”
Anyways, I wish you peace, but I can’t forget what religion/Christianity is responsible for. No charity can return this planet to what it was pre-Christianity, or return the billions of lives lost.
How do you even get to own a MacBook
We believe in the same God. But we just have a different concept of God...
3:30 so tell me about the middle age and than the rome and greeks or in the arabic world eye surgery and than came monotheism
The Catholic Church was wrong on this,
so he said.
I have a question: is biology and evolution theory in conflict with religion?
Truth cannot contradict truth. If we find something to be true through scientific inquiry (using our senses and rationality) then it is true and we must try to reconcile it with what we find true through other means (theology, philosophy, art, sociology, etc.)

I maintain many of my Catholic beliefs but am totally interfaith. This is why I attended an interfaith seminary and was a student of a wonderful teacher (s) Rabbi Joseph H. Gelberman. There is no monopoly on God. Thank you, brother, for this video.
Amen.
It sounds like if you change "religion" to "false religion" you have a Catholic article which may make Thomistic points.
What is he in school for?
keep it up! I enjoy your videos
Those kind of people attaching them self to the religion turn many people away from God itself and they become the gods themselves.
Religion separates people
Love your videos, Brother!
This is Bryam. Could I have more information? I'm writing from New York
Bryam Nieves More information about what?
How do you know my last name? Lol. where I can visit a house in your community and get a discernment process to see if I have the call of God.
@@bryamnieves5178 last name is in your username, might wanna change that.
identity theft is really that easy sometimes.
We Christians surely do not worship the same God as Muslims; what is this? Explain to me
Do you have to wear sandals even in cold weather? That seems a bit unreasonable and unhealthy.😟
"That i came across something that was pure clickbait" the irony
We need God more than we need church leaders regardless of what doctrines we profess.
The main issue is that you still think magic is real and gods exist. It isn't and they don't.
What is the meaning three tie in a Franciscan rope
I wonder why there are only mechanically translated korean subtitles in this video (and I'm not Korean...). Is it something you have set up, Br. Casey?
By the way, wonder if you know about the possibility to let us add subtitles and/or translations to your videos?
Greetings from Germany:)
L. Luve UA-cam mechanically produces subtitles for many languages. It must have something to do with your settings.
Breaking In The Habit Hum, still strange, just checked my settings again. :D
May I ask, do you know Taizé in France? I don't know how known it is in the world (my friends experiences are quite unequal), but it's a wonderful place :)
L. Luve Yes, I have experienced Taize prayer here in the US. It is very nice.
What is the contemporary justification of the Catholic Church in playing a pivotal role in slavery in the Americas ?
Can monks wear shoes?
great videos, wondering what your superiors think about them
love your Alice Cooper intro. :-D so my style too.
Pros:
If you are Atheist, You won't be tested by God
But if you're christian, you will be tested
Cons:
You have to rely on fellow humans
You can rely on an IMMORTAL SUPERNATURAL creator
Got a question for you in case you still check your youtube comments still. Are you an atheist now? I genuinely believe faith is a negative thing. I was raised in a moderately catholic community and quickly moved to atheism upon seeing the problems religion causes in many, many other areas of the world.
Because religion in my area does not do bad things, doesnt mean it doesnt do this in other areas. I din’t think faith is necessarily bad, people can gain strength from it. The problem, I believe, stems in organized religion.
If you trip over running down stairs in your sandals, your religion may well do you more harm than good.
Do you have to wear a costume when you get to a certain level of religious BS? All of them do it.
It's not a "costume". It's a way of dressing that MEANS something ri thre people wearing it and the people observing it. The same is true of most decisions involving dressing. If anything, the way religious people dress is more like a uniform than a costume.
He is a Friar OFM you nob.
Could you check Mrs. betty bowers, america's best Christan plsssssss
This was beautifully articulated.
I wish I had been taught some of these things when growing up.
Thank you... ummm, nice dude. 👍🏽 ♥
thank you for not going for apologetic and on the defense. on youtube there are people who advocate the "bad religion" because of their fundamentalism.
not just of Christianity, people like ken ham and nephilimfree, but also of Muslim extremist and other extreme points of view, and seeing the moderate kind of religion on this platform does a lot, and that comes from someone who does not believe in god.
people are capable of doing nasty stuff, not just in name of a god.
and yes you always have a choice, the goal does NOT justify the means.
I'm going outside at winter in sandals but I'm not a friar...it's 46°F, but I guess I just like it. My feet don't seem to get that cold. Mind you, I'm not crazy, if it was, say, 32°, I'd put on socks (LOL)!!!
