He's 2.5yo. age appropriate behaviour means that they can't do much better. The cartoon makes him seem more capable - 2.5yo are much much more helpless. As stupid as it sounds the parents are being "good" and appropriate.
I think people are too spoiled rotten to understand how damaging it is to be a parentifyed/adultifyed child of self-infanilized adults. We're judging a 2.5yo toddler for not playing quietly, when was the last time we judged middle aged adults that were having a BBQ? Or fratboys for having a college party? A 2.5yo has very little alternatives - making choices is a privilege of adults.

  • @FlyingDuckMan360

For those of you unfortunate enough to have seen "Big Brother Caillou", or even worse, read the book it's based on, "Caillou: Baby Sister", I recommend reading Peanuts: You're a Big Brother Charlie Brown! as the perfect antidote. That book is also about a bald kid whose name begins with the letter C in a yellow shirt and his baby sister, but unlike Caillou, Charlie Brown is legitimately happy to have a younger sister (to the point where when Sally was born, he ran out of his house saying he was a father before correcting himself). Sure, Charlie Brown does get upset with Sally when she messes up his favorite puzzle and when he has to miss a baseball game with his friends to push her around the neighborhood in her stroller, he doesn't stay mad at her for long and feels bad whenever he hurts her feelings. I've seen the "Infant Sibling Jealousy" trope so many times in other media that it was so refreshing to see a story where an older sibling is genuinely happy to have a younger one. I even recommended it to a family with a young boy who was about to have a baby sister of his own.

    • @Hurricanelive
      @Hurricanelive 11 місяців тому +40

And it was still very wholesome and sweet when Charlie took care of Baby Lucy before she became a fussbudget. Baby Lucy did cause trouble but at least was often pretty penitent and her behavior was pretty normal for a little child and not taken to extremes. Now Lucy just wants to cause neurological brain damage on her poor blockhead. G1 Charlie "roughneck" Brown wouldn't have fallen for any of their sick tricks. I miss G1 Charlie Brown! He was hardcore.

I'm pretty sure pinching a baby in real life like that would cause great damage to the under-developed skin, and likely leave the baby with a scar for the rest of its life.
Also, the way Rosie screams spooks me really badly because I've NEVER heard that sound effect before in anywhere else. If it's really a stock sound effect (like Baby Kate's crying), I'd love to see what else it was used in, just so we don't have to live with the horrible theory that they might have have pinched a real baby behind the scenes to produce that sound.
EDIT 9/9/24: It is absolutely a stock sound effect, I just heard it in an episode of Night Court. Episode was "A Family Affair, Part 1", I believe.

You know, I'm suddenly wondering if there's a cartoon series that actually does the "kid dealing with a newborn baby getting more attention" plot without someone coming off as a terrible person.
The only one I can think of is Pingu, which had an episode dealing with him struggling to adjust to the changing routines that happen after his sister Pinga is born. He never actually does anything to Pinga herself as far as I can recall, the episode was more about him trying to find ways to get his mother's attention.

The unfortunate thing is that Caillou is behaving like a normal small child. His brain's not done cooking in that bald little dome of his, so he doesn't have any ability to manage his emotions. Those emotions run haywire and leads to kicking and screaming. Any parent knows that their kids at this age throw tantrums over the absolute dumbest shit - I have a friend who's son lost his mind over idea that his mom didn't want him to watch her poop.
I imagine though that most the reason Caillou becomes utterly insufferable for many is because the plot of the episodes tend to follow a few formulas:
"Caillou misunderstands something -> Parents try to explain -> Caillou flips out and gets grumpy -> Parents placate him"
"Caillou is scared about a normal thing -> That fear makes him scream and cry -> After being exposed to that thing he learns it's not that bad"
"Caillou wants something -> His parents tell him no/later -> He gets pissy and tries to accomplish it himself -> His parents find him in the aftermath and help him do the thing he wanted originally"
Ultimately his parents are extremely gentle with him, and while they get impatient some times, they are never intentionally harsh. Caillou is never punished for bad behavior - I'm not saying I want him smacked left and right, but a stern "don't play in the kitchen unsupervised" or even a time out would be huge. Because a lot of us remember when we were little and pulling this shit, we also know that our own parents would have scolded/smacked us for this sort of behavior (except the daycare one, Caillou's insecurely attached to his parents and this is unfortunately very common). As a result, we think Caillou's a little brat who throws a fit until he gets his way.

When the AOK videos were still around, huge difference between Caillou at 22 and D.W. as an adult herself. This is why I think Caillou is worse and there's probably more to the story regarding how bad he REALLY is.

You really realize the Caillou one was a parody, right?
I don't remember if anyone made a parady of Arthur, but I do know an episode of the series shows them as adults and I don't know everything about them as adults so I can't judge.
I'm just saying it's silly to judge a character based off a parody Parodies aren't Canon.

1:35-1:38 THANK YOU!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that! What makes it worse is that later in the series, he refuses to PLAAAAYY with her at all. If I were Caillou's dad, I'd put him in the corner for an hour!

This really shouldn’t be called “FU Caillou” it should really say “FU Mommy and Daddy of Caillou” because of their blatant horrible parenting.

However bad D.W. is, at least she's far better than Caillou in at least 2 important aspects. First of all, her voice may peel paint sometimes, but at least she doesn't sound like a character from Adam Sandler's The Waterboy Babies. Plus, Caillou is the star of his show. Which means at least when you put on Arthur, you're guaranteed at least half the episodes don't feature her. Also, of COURSE Canada has Lego. Everywhere does. Japan even had a short run Ninjago manga, and Europe has an exclusive soccer based CMF series.

  • @ladypool1404

It's normal that Caillou is a bad kid, his parents NEVER punished him. They always say '' Do do that, it's wrong! '' but rarely explain why it's wrong. They didn't make him realise his mistakes so he will never learn from them. His mother and father are bad parents. Caillou is not the only one to blame for his horrible and annoying attitude. If his parents educate him, he wouldn't be like that.
