Great video Jan ! Don't get frustrated or lose your motivation. People don't always pay attention or get the message. We appreciate that you're actually teaching us that there are no tricks, just lots of time, experience, dedication, constant monitoring and love of plants. And that's the secret. 🙂
I honestly don’t think that people ask in a malicious way. I know that many planty people struggle to get huge plants. Thank you for all your videos i learned a lot 😊
Ppl please... No secret. He is so wonderful and passionate about sharing his knowledge. We should thank him instead of hurting him. PS. Sidney Plant Guy keep it up. Kudos. Good luck
Your videos have greatly helped me with growing my plants. ❤️❤️❤️.. keep doing what you do. You are transparent and realistic with your plant care. It's very true that, "it's not one size fits all" when it comes to care. It takes patience and observation.
I just wanted to personally thank you for sharing your “secrets” - accumulated over years - you’ve been elemental in my journey. I have trouble finding tolerable content creators that are knowledgeable. Just so you know - it is very appreciated AND inspirational 🌺💛
Thank you, Jan, for yet another clear and succinct presentation. I do hope I’ve been able to convey my appreciation and gratitude for your time and effort, and generosity of spirit, for sharing your wealth of information and experience with the world of plant lovers.
Wise advice. I’m in U.K. and apart from a bathroom fern that’s doing well I have better conditions for succulents. So thank you for sharing your fabulous tropical family, it’s a real treat to see 😍
Hi Jan, I just wanted to tell you about my plants. I to am a Monstera, Philodendron person with a mix of just plants I like, on the side. After seeing all your videos, I took the big step into moss poles like yours. The water bottles work great and after just a few months I have a number of aerial roots poking into the wet moss. Needless to say I'm thrilled and am awaiting big leaves! We live in Cleveland, Ohio, winter here so it is difficult to keep the humidity up but we're working with it. Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos and information. I look forward to seeing new ones!
Honestly it has been the most encouraging and motivating thing to me to try my hand at indoor plants to hear that a lot of it is just time and learning from mistakes. You give such incredible clear instructions and tips. As well as just hearing your mindset on it’s just a plant and leaves come and go because it makes me feel like it’s very low pressure.
The secret is having a genuine love for your plants - a love that motivates you to research and learn about them, to listen to them, to talk to them, to be considerate of their needs and take the time to care.
You've taught me SO much about moss poles and plant care. My girlfriend and I are so lucky to have your content as we grow our nursery, sell plants, and continue sharing our passion with our plant community!
Hi Sydney! I am Gladys, I live in Puerto Rico, a beautiful island in the Caribbean. I am so grateful I found you; you explain things so wonderful. You explain things in a way that I feel I can make it. I watched other videos from, of course, other people, but the feeling is different. With you I feel that, this time, I will be able to make it. As you said in this video, I used to purchase big plants, and they had not made it. Thankfully, I gave them to the employees that cleans the condominium where I live. Just wanted you to know that you do a marvelous job explaining how to do things and a marvelous job having your channel. Thank you, thank you, thank you! God blesses you!
I have a sudden urge to move where you are 😭 How is it living on a beach paradise? 😍 For me, it's the ultimate goal in this life. Hopefully, one day....
Admittedly I clicked this video thinking you'd share what fertilizer you use 😭 but I love your advice because it's so true, there is no formula to plant care. They are living things which means they each have unique needs and this is what makes caring for plants exciting. If someone gave us a magic formula, we wouldn't take the time to get to know our plants and build a relationship with them. Thank you for your thoughtful content, new subscriber here 💚 PS - you've inspired me to get into more climbing plants 😊
It's so funny how I can fit maybe 20-30 of my plants if I record a video in this setting but only took you a few of your plants to take up almost the whole screen. 🤣 Your Glorious gets me every time! Always my goal! Slowly but surely! 😍 Agreed with all your messages and tips. I feel that trial and error is always the best by tackling one possible problem at a time until we get it right. Thanks for the video 😁
I just started collecting plants in late 2023. The plant I got were either cuttings or juvenile ones. I can't wait for them to grow as huge as the ones in your back
Your grouping of plants for this video was really amazing, and an excellent backdrop for the theme of this video. While there are no tricks for what you've accomplished with your plants, it's a good lesson that with dedication, effort, and time, amazing plants are possible. Your videos keeps me motivated so thank you for taking time to post these.
I found that with this latest video, you are more real than I even thought. And don't worry, that question is the furthest from my mind. I have found that the ONE secret is really just being attentive to your plants. If you pay attention, clean them regularly, and give them the conditions they require,...each plant is different. Allowing them to be fooled into thinking they are in their native environment is always #1! I value your videos bud! Sooo happy I subscribed and for all the tips! I will say that if you ever decide to sell a cutting or two from those mature beauties, I would LOVE to buy it. Good job on this video my friend!
I guess you do have a secret. You just love them! You treasure them when they are growing, and when they are sick, and even when they're just standing there, being their leafy selves. You admire their resilience and the way they reach for the light and value their character as they silently transform you and your space into a sanctuary of green love 💚🥰
You are correct that growing big leaves is not easy. But through your excellent videos I am learning so much. Thank you for giving us all of your knowledge you have gained through the years. I know that making these videos is time consuming. Please know that we all appreciate you very much!
Thank you for sharing all of your planty wisdom. I have found the liquid fertilizer in Canada. Can’t wait to see how my plants like it. I have a mint/marble adansonii and an albo climbing a moss pole using your design. They are loving it so far. -20 and snow right now so, I expect them to take off in 4 months time. Patience is key for sure. ❤😊
I love your content! And admittedly a little jealous of your experience 😅😜 thank you for going through the trial and error and sharing it so generously with the plant loving community. You are so easy to listen to, so thoughtful and informative and fun. Thank you!
I have discovered there's no secret to healthier, larger plants. I was off on leave for 3 months and spent so much time tending to my plants. They flourished! Like any living thing, they need time, attention and love.
Jan! You have extraordinary and unique generosity, openness, and honesty that are refreshing, empowering, and motivating. Thank you ... may the glass-half-full tribe rule the world!!! 😉
For me the confusion "secret" is about nutrients as we learned that plants make their own food via photosynthesis - so I didn't know how much and how often to "feed" the plants. Which actually addresses the other obstacle I've had, how to effectively allow climbers to climb? Until your advisement on nutrientting the moss pole, I just gave up by installing trees in my yard and throwing my epiphytes under them to climb naturally. I'm fortunate to live in the Los Angeles basin, which is 65-70% humidity and consistently sunny all year long to grow houseplants outdoors. So thank you so much for sharing your "secrets" so as to allow me to enjoy large plants IN my home as well.
i Think people just get confused when they do the same things and dont get results. That you live in the perfect climate for these beautifull plants, makes allot of difference, and people should not forget that enviroment plays a huge factor. Getting care exactly right is sometimes difficult and plants do love consistency. You obviously care allot for these plants with allot of love and dedication, you should be very proud!
Ok darlin first off obviously your amazing I absolutely love your videos and I’m super excited to make some of your moss poles by far the best and easiest I’ve seen. I think I watched all your videos today.. 2 questions.. I’m kinda curious that because like myself I believe you love the plants with character and was wondering why you don’t have any Calatheas or prayer plants? They have such depth and gorgeous designs and move so beautifully during the day and night and secondly have you ever tried Leca? I’m asking this because I also Love my Manijula Pothos but for whatever those evil lil aphids would devour their roots.. I hate that bug! Anyway cut them, propagated them in water and like I did with most my plants switched them to leca… Less bugs 🎉! In doing so I found that it obviously raises the humidity and changed the leaf texture they seem to grow much healthier and thicker so I think I’m going to try your moss pole with a thick string or 2 down the middle of the pole and use Leca.. wondering if you have ever tried this before and if it would still be possible to grow those large beautiful leaves? Thankyou for your videos they really are great! 😊
Great video! I used to live in Sydney but returned to Tasmania. I don't think many people realise how benign the conditions are in coastal NSW (bar fire and flooding). I'm happy just to see my plants slowly settle in and grow with leaves achieving their mature form and looking healthy. Size isn't my goal (although I love your leviathans) because it is just too cool down here, so I really try to focus on style and magical combinations. I'd love to see the small plants you speak about and hear about your plans for them.
Agreed! Which is why, Jan I never ask any grower, "What's your secret?" As a Monstera nut I always tell people this: "They are not called MONSTER-a for no reason. Like the monsters of mythical lore and those that grip us from within, they take *time* to get larger than life. To tame the monster that be is to tame the monster from within: *Impatience* "
Because of you, I started moss pole journey. I have monstera deliciosa and epipremnum marble queen. I appreciate your videos. Today I wanted to buy another plant but couldn't decide which one, so I just left the store 🤣 there was philodendron imperial red and dieffenbachia.
Excellent video. So well put. I look back just a couple years and how far I have come! I learned by trial and error. I reaserch my plant, find out what it likes and do my best to provide. If people want plants as big as you then they will have to act accordingly. I personally don't have the room! I live vicariously thru you! LOL but I do my best to give what I can to each plant. I have cabinets, grow lights, humidifiers, and heat mats. I let some climb, some don't. I factor in astetics too. I also think we need to remember at what stage you are buying your plant. Is it a seedlimg? Full grown? So anyway, We are our best teachers. Well equal parts maybe of plant videos and just going for it! I certainly love watching your videos and asking for help when I need it. xoxo Thanks for everything btw my Queen has recovered! it WAS water!! so simple.
I get it… With just the few changes I have picked up from you I see the improvement in growth with my plants. A lot is trial and error because what may work for you may not work for me. It’s good to have a guide but you have to pay attention to your plants, your environment and the care you’re providing.
i enjoy watching your videos a lot! You have the best balance of information and setting expectations. Also, it doesn't feel like an information overload, it's like hanging out with a friend! :)
Love your comment at the beginning!!! I think this is the result of our modern "instant succes focussed" world. But I hope I'm allowed to say "I'm jealous" 🤩Thanksl you for the tips. As a teacher I can really appreciate this. But showing your beautiful plants around you all the time, sometime it's just to much 🤭🤭🤣🤣..
1:17 !!! This!!! I have been telling my family this A LOT lately. They have all started to comment on just how many houseplants and outdoor plants I have now (around 30). I just laugh and tell them that now that I have figured out how to NOT Kill them they are just starting to accumulate and stick around long enough for them to notice they are there. LOL
Thank you Jan! Definitely no secret! Just consistency clear air water and light. Oh, of course! Your babes they’ve extra because magic of patient & musings with the Royal 🐱. I’m in America. & I love the tips you give. And the more scientific/ academic logic to the hobby
I absolutely love you and your videos! Thanks so much for all the inspiration, information, and sharing your passion! ❤❤❤ your fellow plant hobbyist (Buffalo, Ny.)
Have you considered creating channel memberships? Your videos are so informative & I truly believe that many ppl (myself included,) would spend $5-$10 a month for a membership. You could make asking questions for you to answer during q&a’s a members only privilege. Forgive me if you don’t care abt such things, I worked in PR prior to becoming a full time mom & even over a decade later, I still tend to think like a publicist sometimes 😂.
I have a question. I got this beautiful Alocasia Regal Shields 3 days ago. It came in a small pot with substrate that’s very fluffy, I think it’s sphagnum moss. I already ordered everything I need to make a chunky aroid mix like yours and I will repot the plant as soon as it arrives. I’ve noticed that at night water droplets form on the leaf tips which will then drop to the floor. I’ve seen this before on a monstera I once had. From what I’ve read, this means that plant is saturated with water and gets rid of the excess at night when it can’t get rid off it via evaporation. It’s been doing this every night. I’ve checked the substrate yesterday and it felt dry, at least the first 5 centimeters did and it’s a fairly small pot for the size of the plant. The plant is 115 centimeters tall and the pot is 15 centimeters in diameter and 20 centimeters tall. The question is, should I water the plant despite the guttation or should I wait until it doesn’t guttate anymore and then water it?
Are you adding some sort of OLF (organic liquid fertilizer) or do you use rain water? Adding both of these is amazing! Using cork or vines from reptile stores or a regular rough surface wood plank for climbing seems to trigger my monstera and philondendron even more. It doesnt require watering at all, although cork bark could do this if u wanted to i guess...
Hi Jan, great video as usual! FYI the video quality is very good - but I think there is one thing that you might do to make it a bit better (if I am right LOL). To my eyes it looks as is if you might have the video picture recording settings on "auto white balance"? If you watch very carefully you will see it 'hunting' to try and find the correct white balance - moving from a cold to warm colour temperature and back again. If this is true, check if you can change the video settings to a fixed white balance (manually choose a colour temperature or a colour mood) on your camera. You may need to experiment each time to get the colour rendering right based on if it is sunny outside, cloudy, night, which room you are in and so forth. Hope this helps mate. Scott 😁
Hey Jan, can you please tell us your secrets on how to get large leaves super fast??? 😜😁😜 Thank you for a concise compilation on what to focus on to be successful with growing our babies. Vielen Dank für all Deine Videos. They are great fun to watch!
All these plants are from the wild, during the pandemic, people have gone into the forest to look for something to sell. And they found all this different leafy plants and sold it to the community. In the town where I from, the villagers started going into the forest to harvest this plants. Good thing is that the government have a set of laws protecting wild life including plants. The government was able to control it before the forest become in balance of nature and eventually bad. But before the government realized it, there were already a lot taken and sold into the city. Indeed this plants are beautiful. When I did mountain climbing in one of the biggest mountain in the Philippines in the 90s, we saw a lot of different kinds of this plants. But we never took them because no one showed interest in any of this.
Being good at anything requires learning a large number of small gains which add up to a large change. Also I recommend looking at your plants every day you will learn what works and what doesnt. Also watch all of sydneyplant guys videos you will learn a ton.
Great video Jan ! Don't get frustrated or lose your motivation. People don't always pay attention or get the message. We appreciate that you're actually teaching us that there are no tricks, just lots of time, experience, dedication, constant monitoring and love of plants. And that's the secret. 🙂

I agree. I think sim people mean it to be a compliment.
Oh for sure :) but trust me, not all do :D the average person on the internet is pretty rude :D
I agree too..but we don't really know coz only Jan knows d rudest comment which btw is really irritating..great video
@@sydneyplantguy you are pretty resilient like you're plants and repel all the haters 💚
Exactly! It’s a common phrase here in the states and by no means is it meant to imply deception. It literally means tips and tricks.
When people say what's yur secret it means respect for yur talent to grow !! Had nothing to do with disrespect !!😮
Ppl please... No secret. He is so wonderful and passionate about sharing his knowledge. We should thank him instead of hurting him.
PS. Sidney Plant Guy keep it up. Kudos. Good luck
I wouldn’t say people hurt me, it’s just a bit demotivating. Thank you :)
Your videos have greatly helped me with growing my plants. ❤️❤️❤️.. keep doing what you do. You are transparent and realistic with your plant care. It's very true that, "it's not one size fits all" when it comes to care. It takes patience and observation.
So true!! Thank you :)
I just wanted to personally thank you for sharing your “secrets” - accumulated over years - you’ve been elemental in my journey. I have trouble finding tolerable content creators that are knowledgeable. Just so you know - it is very appreciated AND inspirational 🌺💛
Jan. I’ve worked out your secret!!!! It’s your love and passion for your plants💕🌿💕😉
Could be :)
Thank you, Jan, for yet another clear and succinct presentation. I do hope I’ve been able to convey my appreciation and gratitude for your time and effort, and generosity of spirit, for sharing your wealth of information and experience with the world of plant lovers.
Thank you for your nice comment :)
Wise advice. I’m in U.K. and apart from a bathroom fern that’s doing well I have better conditions for succulents. So thank you for sharing your fabulous tropical family, it’s a real treat to see 😍

Great to hear :) thanks

Agreed! Which is why, Jan I never ask any grower, "What's your secret?" As a Monstera nut I always tell people this:

Very true !:)
It’s so amazing to see your plants, you really master the plant care, and the way you explain, thanks for sharing Jan!!!
Very well said Jan! Ppl are wishfully thinking (including me) there’s an easier way! But there is no easy way,but hard work! Natalie 😊
Thank you :)

i enjoy watching your videos a lot! You have the best balance of information and setting expectations. Also, it doesn't feel like an information overload, it's like hanging out with a friend! :)
Thank you :) glad u enjoy them :)
Loved the honest address at the beginning 👍
Thanks :)
Thank you for tagging the grown plants so we know what to look forward to
aside from your experiences in growing plants indoors, you are one gorgeous plant guy.....just wanna say it out there.
Thanks :)
Love your honesty ❣️

It's obvious to me Jan. You are shrinking. Your plants are staying the same. Happy New Year buddy.

This!!! I have been telling my family this A LOT lately. They have all started to comment on just how many houseplants and outdoor plants I have now (around 30). I just laugh and tell them that now that I have figured out how to NOT Kill them they are just starting to accumulate and stick around long enough for them to notice they are there. LOL
Thank You for being honest & truthful (loved the intro) and as always, for a very informative and interesting video.
Thanks :)

Cheers :)
I absolutely love you and your videos! Thanks so much for all the inspiration, information, and sharing your passion! ❤❤❤ your fellow plant hobbyist (Buffalo, Ny.)
Thanks :)
Hey :) I thought about it but ultimately I want my content to be free for everybody to enjoy :)
Thank you so much for this video 💚
Thank u I respect the fact u understand the time it takes and the care and passion it take to grow healthy plants thanks for this video..
Thank you :)
You are absolutely brilliant! ✨✨✨
Thank you so much :))
Scott 😁
Hey, i know :/ my phone doesn’t let me turn it off 🤦🏻♂️

Your amazing with your plants. This weekend, I'll binge all ur vids. I just kinda found your channel!!!😅
Thank you:)
I love all your plants
I already know your secret.. I’m watching anyway😌
Thanks for revealing your secret!
Not sure why the lighting keeps changing from warm to cold. Love your videos!!
Great work

Thanks :)
Totally agree with you, Jan.
Thank you for this vidéo 💚🇫🇷🙏
A beautiful collection of plants.

Great tips & logical "secrets". What do mean by maturity ? How do you know when a plant is at maturity ? Thank you for any answers.
Means the plant is an adult, showing all the grown up features rather than the juvenile features
Maturity is different for all species though :)
@10:04 you said horizontal instead of vertical, Jan! Lol. Lovely vid as always
Oopsie :P
Thank you Sydney I learned a lot ❤🎉
You have very happy plants!!! 🥰🪴🌿
