Hi Nick, Thank you for this and past posting! This experience is similar to my experience in Melbourne (with one substantial point of difference). My setup is a wooden hive wrapped with a propagation mat and temp controller (both fairly inexpensive and common) covered with a simple polystyrene insulation box. I received my bees last spring and though spring was cold for them, summer was a blast with lots of activity. Autumn and most of the winter went well as well with large numbers coming out on warm sunny winter days. The one difference is I did not have an in-hive feeder and the colony practically starved 3 months ago with a mass die out overnight. There was plenty of pollen stored in the hive but no honey. Surprisingly about 10% has survived that day and I have been feeding them sugar water ever since. My experience is that cold is not as much of an obstacle as food...
Hi Nick I am trying to find someone who can assist me with getting a hive of native stingless bees for my flower farm located on the NSW South Coast. Can you advise if there is anyone that you are aware of that would have a hive split available later this year? I watched your episode here about Canberra and that you didn’t usually send bees down this way and am unsure whether this many years later whether you do this now. Many Thanks Theresa
Hi Nick! Love your videos, keep it up! One question I have is when the queen dies of old age and a new (unmated) queen takes over; if there's no other hives in the area, how will the queen mate? Is it feasible for her to mate with other drones in her hive, or will this cause diversity/inbreeding problems down the line, will she even mate with her drones? Wouldn't have a clue how this works for bees.
Eric The Red yep she will mate with her own drones. It is important to keep a genetic diversity with your bees. 25 hives will give you a decent gene pool. Trade splits with friends to help them too. 👍🏻

Best way to keep stingless bees in Canberra is to move to Brisbane.
