    I really should try and revisit this beer one of these days. Had it years back (with age) and don't think I was really ready to appreciate what it was/is. I think since I've gotten much more into spirits the last 4-5 years, I'd probably enjoy it more now?

    • @hhaste
      @hhaste 2 місяці тому +1

      Same here but it's probably still exactly how we remember it, lol. EDIT: Although, last time I had it, they were around 19% or so. I'd prefer it being easier to drink and lower ABV, so I may enjoy it more now, actually.

      I'm not sure, Joe. I would say that Haste is right in that it's probably similar to how you remember it. I know you don't love big boozy hop-forward beers -- and I'm actually the same way -- which is why I like this one with some age on it. I would say if you see it at some point, it doesn't hurt to grab a bottle and see what you think. Definitely not a beer I want to drink more than once per year. It's an experience, for sure.
      Cheers, man!

    My local shop has these in 4 packs and singles.. tempted to get a single and just forget about it for as many years as I can.The old ones I had, like you mentioned, were around 19% or so. I'd prefer it being easier to drink and lower ABV, so I may enjoy it more now, actually.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 місяці тому

      As long as the single is $10 or cheaper, it's worth revisiting, for sure. I feel like the ABV being a bit lower has helped, as I remember this being closer to 20% ABV with past releases, as well. If you do give it a shot, let me know! I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.
      Cheers!

    Classic beer Joe and great review of such! Hope you are well man I'm going to have to grab a bottle of this 2024 rendition. I agree with age it starts tasting like cognac, I think 4yrs of age is the oldest I've had and that was all booze lol I've also gotten that vanilla note you mentioned! #🐶🐟 cheers buddy

      Good to see you around, Kenny! Still following on Untappd and seeing you take down some wonderful beer! This beer is an absolute monster, and I love that it changes so significantly with age. I want another five years of age on it until I think it's amazing, LMAO! I'm doing well, dude. Outside of this scorching hot Summer, of course. BRING ON THE COOLER WEATHER! Thanks, sir!
      Cheers!

    I had this a few weeks back, the 90 and 60 were definitely better. It disappeared quickly off the shelf at Total Wine and More, so I guess it was popular. I paid $36 for a 4 pack, If I see another maybe I'll grab it and stick it in the back of my fridge for a couple years. Great review Joe! Cheers!

      Yeah, I would say I slightly "cheated" counting this as a "shelfie" beer to review, but it's also one that a lot of people can get much easier than they could 5+ years ago. I agree that I prefer the 60 and 90 Minute offerings, but this is one of those special treats, IMO. Fun to try every year or two. I do think aging some bottles would be fun for you, Rodney. Thanks, dude!
      Cheers!

    I've always wanted to try this but I don't see it often. I plan to get a 4 pack next time it shows up.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 місяці тому +1

      Definitely worth grabbing a bottle or two (or four pack) if you see it. Crazy beer, but it's fun to drink every year or two. The fact that it lends itself to aging certainly helps.
      Cheers!

    I have never seen or had that one. Bigfoot is soo much better aged. Wow, those chunks are very visible. Some beers are much better aged then they are fresh. Some of your descriptions seem reminiscent of what I picked up in the Utopias beer. I hope to get my hands on one. Cheers!

      This is a wild one, for sure. It honestly tasted like it was a barrel-aged a bit with those brandy/cognac notes. I loved the Utopias BA 120 Minute, though. Hope you get a chance to try it at some point, brother!
      Cheers!

    The 4th of July was only 3 weeks ago?! We really are in the dog days. I’m so ready for fall

      Pretty insane, right? I love the Fall and Winter. Definitely in the minority, but I want to watch some football and hockey with the temperatures being right in my wheelhouse. These 90 F days are wearing on me. Hate it. BRING ON THE PUMPKIN BEERS, LMAO!
      Cheers, buddy!

    10 years damn thats gotta wind up being like 20% id think. Caramel surprises me. I dont remember this being dry but i last had it quite awhile ago and it was maybe a year or two old. I dont recall it much, take that as you will 😅

      LMAO! I would love to try one that is aged 10 years. Probably a fantastic experience. This beer is so complex. If I sat down for 45 minutes sipping on it while reviewing, I probably would've pulled out 15-20 more descriptors. It's a wild ride, that's for sure.
      Cheers, brother!

    I had this on tap 10 years ago and it was glorious. All bottled versions were total let downs.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 місяці тому +1

      I've seen it once on tap, but didn't try it for some reason. Can't remember. I've had this enough where I want significant age on it. This bottle was pretty damn good "fresh," but when I've had a really old bottle, it's just delicious.
      Cheers, Paul!

    Would love to get ahold of a couple bottles of this beer as well as you know we don't get dogfish head beers where I live 😢cheers 🍻

      Yeah, that really sucks, Billy. Once I catch up on beer mails I owe to folks, I'll see if I can find some more and other DFH and fire off a small package. It'd probably be in the Fall/Winter, but we'll see.
      Cheers, man!

    I seen a four pack of last years at my distributor for 19 bucks. I bought the Utopias WWS instead for 19 and was underwhelmed. Regardless it's an interesting beer.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 місяці тому

      A four pack for $19? HOLY CRAP! Yeah, I would've bought that. I would've also bought that Utopias WWS. In fact, I'm reviewing the latter before the end of the month. I have a bottle that is three years old, so we'll see how it is. It's a such that you were underwhelmed. Hope my experience isn't that similar, haha! 120 is definitely an interesting beer, though.
      Cheers, Dominic!

    Always said this beer is more like sipping on some liquor than drinking a beer 😂💀☠️😵 think it’s definetly very solid though.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 місяці тому +1

      It definitely skirts the line! It's not quite as ridiculous as calling Utopias from Samuel Adams a beer, but it's not far off, haha! Definitely more of a liqueur vibe than anything else. Damn tasty beer, just give me like five or more years of age on it!
      Cheers, Kevin!

    Man I haven’t had this one in years. I remember it being really syrupy. I think you saying it’s really more of an American Barleywine is accurate and it’s probably more enjoyable if you view it that way.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 місяці тому +1

      It's funny because there are certain beers where I think they drink completely different to the style the brewery says it is, and this is 100% one of those beers. I guess you could say it's an Imperial IPA, but the malt character is so intense and noticeable -- even fresh -- that I would never guess that doing this blind. It'd be an American Barleywine or the catch-all American Strong Ale style. Regardless, such a fun beer, and it's cool that it ages so well. It's been a little while since we conversed, Curtis, so I hope all is well!
      Cheers, buddy!

      @@averagejoe716 Yeah it is interesting when beers get categorized a certain way. I’m sure when Dogfish Head made this it was the same recipe as 90 minute but ramped way up so they called it an IPA, but the sweetness and maltiness from doing that really changes the dynamic of the beer. Reminds me of in brewing competitions how judges say how important it is to put the beer in the right category. I’d still like to retry 120 at some point. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it here.
      It has been a little bit since I commented now that you mention it. All’s good on my end though! I was kicking around Asheville with the fam all last week so that pulled me out of my usual day to day routine for sure.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 місяці тому +1

      I'm not a stickler for styles, but I will say that in any kind of competition, I totally would be. The only time a beer frustrates me is if I'm in the mood for a specific style and the beer doesn't drink like it at all. However, if it's still delicious, then I'm alright with it, haha!
      As for you not commenting as much recently, I totally get it, dude. It's the Summer and folks are doing things. I didn't mean for it to come off as "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, CURTIS?" and more to the tune of it's cool to see you chiming in, as I always appreciate it. Hope you had an amazing time in Asheville, brother!

    • @curtisbrause9255
      @curtisbrause9255 2 місяці тому +1

      @@averagejoe716 Ha! I definitely didn’t take it like that. Just when you said that I was like “shit, I actually haven’t commented in a while!” The Asheville trip was great and I’ll say you should absolutely do a Burial order sometime, especially any of the imperial pastry stouts. It feels like anytime I look they have at least one variant with coconut.
      I can totally get about being frustrated when it’s not even close to what you thought when you had expectations. Like I clearly LOVE hazies but if I bought something called an American IPA and it was the typical thicc boi (I had to say it), I would be like “What the hell, man?” As far as competitions you kind of have to be a stickler because you’ve got to pick a winner. Really have to hit all the points. The BJCP style guidelines I find interesting in general that it’s essentially the opinion of one guy in Gordon Strong. That one guy REALLY knows his shit when it comes to beer and has a ton of medals to back it up, but it’s kind of crazy to think about.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 місяці тому

      I figured you didn't, but when I read my response back, I thought it looked ... odd, haha! I would totally take down some Burial beer. I think the next time I meetup with the FLX boys, I'll place an order a bit before that and split it with them. If I'm going to order some of their beer, I'd rather do a big order to save on shipping and whatnot.
      The BJCP guideline is great if you're judging beers at an actual event. It's perfect for those types of competition. I just never got into it because reviewing beer on UA-cam = personal opinion, IMO. I'd rather hear folks' opinion rather than them tell how it fits under the guidelines, if that makes sense. I didn't know the guidelines were essentially one guy. That's crazy. Even if he's THE beer guy, you would think it's more of a committee or something.
