I've got a loose original mirror on my 67. It does not have the retainer spring/clip nor the bowtie (as the bowties were discontinued {roughly} in the mid 1967 production run). For the mirrors w/o the retainer spring, I've heard you can use a small amount of blue loctite at the junction of the ball and the mirror case proper. Mine is getting close to being loose enough to need some help. I'll try this today and report back! Thanks for the very helpful video, Mitch! I'm sure a lot of other peeps appreciate it too! A+++++

    Hey there Mitch,
Yep, tried this on my old Impala decades ago in my youth. I failed and broke it. No patience back then. It was all rusty junk anyway, so no great loss.
    Great tip!
    Take care,
    Dan

Older cars are always great to look at but the stories behind them really bring them to life. I know a little bit about the 63 from your earlier videos ( well worth the time to watch again) but can't wait to hear both of the stories. The mirror project is perfect for a rainy Saturday or when you want to just hang out in the garage. But ya gotta give it the 80mph test. Stay safe have fun.

mirrors on my 63 vette always have this problem. Will add this to the list of winter maintenance items. Getting chilly here in Iowa now. have he door panels off trying to replace the return spring on the knobs now.

Like the mirror fix. How about fixing a loose base plate of the same door mirror?

Does it make sense to put the 'ring gap' at the bottom of the glass, to enable any drainage in case moisture collects behind the glass? Great content, as always. Thanks.

Decrease the background music volume would be an improvement.

I love the USS Abraham Lincoln shirt! Is there a story behind you wearing it? I’m not aware of you being a Navy veteran, if you are. I retired from the Navy 1 1/2 years ago after 36 years of service. Of course I also love the channel and what you’re doing with Vettes.

Who knew there was a snap ring holding in the glass. Ok, I'm gonna do it, I just hope, it's not glued in too. And you mentioned a small spring ? I assume it's used to hold tension on the glass/snap ring ? I'll report back, thanks Mitch (63 roadster).

I did this exact procedure a couple of weeks ago, and I have two comments. First, in my case, the new tightening only lasted for about 2 door shuts, and then it was loose again. The mirror will have to be DAMN tight in order for it to hold its position long term. Second, I found the easiest way to remove the retaining ring is to grasp the end of it with a hemostat and pull it out. Much easier than trying to pry it with a dental pick. I'm going to have to open it up again to try another solution as the peening of the rivets didn't make it tight enough. Fortunately, reproductions are faithful to the original, and you can swap the mirror glass to use the original glass with correct date code on the reproduction mirror. One other comment - if you break the rivets when peening them, you can try reattaching the metal strip with JB Weld and a couple of small C-clamps.

You need to do a how to on how to tighten up a mirror at the base. Both of mine are loose at the base where it mounts to the door.

I gave up trying to get my snap ring out. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but must have tried 5 different times to get that snap ring out. Drives me nuts when I see guys just pop theirs out, I can not figure out why I am not able to.

You can remove the glued in glass just soak the mirror head in gasoline and it will fall right out.
