Today we’re going to be trying out two wonderful new products (at least new for me): the Sonnox Inflator and the Sonnox Limiter.
If you’ve seen any of our reviews/demo’s in the past, you know how we do these things. I open up the plugin for the first time, put it on, and try it out. This way, you get my real reaction to using this plugin. My first experience will be your first experience!
We’ve had a chance to try out some Sonnox plugins in the past, and we love them! I’ve heard really good things about the Sonnox Oxford Limiters! Whenever I would talk lovingly about L2’s people would say “oh yeah the L2 is great, but you’ve got to try the Oxford out!” - Which makes me even more excited to try these out!

The inflator is meant to be used differently. According to the manual a good starting point is effect=100 and curve in the middle. The input slider controls the amount. Curve down is punch, Curve up is fat. But, yes, I know, warren would say: Use your ears. Don’t listen to the guys that say „you should“ and „you shouldn’t“. :-)
I‘m much more careful with the inflator than i used to be. Like other harmonic distortion tools i tended to do too much. Ideally listen again with fresh ears the next day.

I been using these on my mixes for years, ALSO love there dynamics plugin and really love there transmod for punching up a kick or snare. I always use the dynamics and inflator on drum buss, and the limiter has a home on my master buss. only thing I would add is that I only use the inflator on things that i really want to stand out in a track. dont put it on everything, just the featured elements on the song.

Love the Inflator, used to have it at the studio. I miss it. These days I like IVGI on all individual drum tracks, maybe a little extra Saturation Knob on Kick and snare, and definitely Bark of Dog v2 on the kick. Depending on the genre I'll use MJUC or Rough Rider on the drum bus in parallel. Oh yes, my go to comp on individual tracks is DC1A v3.

For me, when working with the lowcost rig at home, it's a kick + snare bus with a TLs tube saturator and a LoudMax, and then a sound shaping reverb that makes it a bit 80ies, like the Aries 0.4alfa which sounds really weird. Every mic that leads to here is gated.
Hihat may be completely extra. Then, there is an ambience bus with overheads and room mics, but before that, the room mics get a saturating compressor, and the overheads get some kind of deesser. In the studio, we made a drum submix (very little kick and as little of cymbals as possible, using deesser) just to run it through an SPL with attack in the minus and sustain in the plus. We print the result to a new drum effect track, that we EQ and mix in.

    • @neovxr

Another miraculous tool is a virtual-wired rack with a 4-band crossover and 4 Flux Bittersweets. Beware some phase issues, you can't parallel that. But it is meant to give you quite some color, and by nature it sounds "parallel" enough already. An example for split points would be 124, 472, 3334Hz. The trick is in the steepness, to get good color and phase response. In this case, I use 84, 84, and 36dB/Oct. Really strong separation for the transient controls. Often I would just push up the treble and the low mid transients. The Flux plugs are set to "fast" mode, time constants for the high bands are 42ms, for the low bands 64ms. That's kind of a sweet spot to start from. The crossover has charming personality, the phase notches depend on split frequency and steepness in quite unpredictable ways, especially their intensity.

Hey Warren, thanks for this video on plug-ins! Question: In any future studio tours, can you please ask guests to showcase their favorite/go-to in the box plug-ins? As you know very well, a choice plug-in is on the same playing field now a days as out board gear. Curious how the pros working hybrid have either replaced certain pieces of hardware and/or what they use as a hardware setting in combination with a plug-in. Thanks again!

its not new, unless there is a new version which i dont know of.

its a way to easily gain the RMS and stay at the sames peak level.

I don't understand this video.... These are very old plugins, and here we are watching Warren try them out for the first time. What are we supposed to learn from this?? I would rather tune in, and get his perspective on something that he's used and abused for awhile.... and knows inside & out. I've been using these 2 plugins for years, and there's so many aspects of them that were missing due to his unfamiliarity with them. I like & respect Warren, but watching anyone use a product for the first time just baffles me. I want to learn from someone who really knows the product. That said... Sonnox Limiter has lived on my 2-bus for about 5 years now, with just about 8-14% enhancement.... sometimes more if the mix is sparse, and needs more density. I also use it on submix buses... It's great on the vocal bus at 40-50% enhance. It's like a parallel compressor. I hardly ever make the reduction meter light up. I like the Limiter's enhancer feature more than Inflator.
