Wow. I used to program 3.5 drives. I did all the code. A long time ago. Not so far away. This is cool. I remember that on launch night it would not work, but i could make the motors work. It sounded good. I pointed my driver to another disk.... Had been up for 48 hours. Later, i had to get the scope up to prove to the hw dudes they wired it wrong. Life in the SV.
Just saying, if you search hard enough there IS a commercial floppy disk controller (long since discontinued for sure) that can run 8 of those drives at a time in one PC without any fancy wiring. Years ago I made a disk duplication machine with em that would run the drives at 4x speed and write both sides of the disk at the same time, eject the disk and print a label (already on the disk) with an inkjet while the next disk was copying. When that thing was running it certainly made some noise for sure, especially when all the disks were different.
This is how I imagine 8-bit music came about. Some tech nerds got bored at work one day and decided to make their floppies “sing”......and behold....the birth of video game music!
The notes are used either by varying voltage or using a pulse width modulator to control the speed the electric motors are spinning. Higher rpm=higher note. Very cool
