Can't believe They Might Be Giants invented music on January 15th, 1990.
For anyone looking for a last-minute Halloween costume, go as one of those flannel and denim-clad people with the eye-visors.
John Flannel
Why is the world in love again?
Why are we walking hand in hand?
Why are the ocean levels rising up?
It's a brand new record for 1990,
They Might Be Giants' brand new album Flood!
30 years later I can still sing most of this album from memory...
This is what happiness sounds like.
John will always be my favorite but John also brings a lot to the group.
I don't think they would have gotten far without John, even with John's talent.
i like john and john but i think dan, dan and dan also add alot to the band
which ones john haha
@@kingofwingo they got so oooold time makes fools of us all
@@BruceAlariethey’re talking about John. The guy in the band.
The quality of the video matches the quality of the song, FINALLY.
The video will have to go far beyond even 8K before it truly matches.
@@0okamino yes
@0okamino I agree
Anyone still watching in 2024? The tmbg is timeless.
just got into them late last year! no regrets
Known this song for a long time, but just recently listened to some albums from them and got into them
Yes! I've also got Doctor Worm on repeat these days.
i listened to a ton of tmbg as a kid, but kinda forgot about them until my friend played flood on a car ride. been listening to their stuff on repeat for months now
For a guy that doesn't have a huge vocal range in terms of octaves John Linnell really belts this magnificent song out.
I always thought this was symbolic of the canaries in the coal mines warning humans of impending risk. Having such a canary in your soul would be like having a strong consciousness. In modern day terms the blue bird night lights, or lighthouses, or anything that lights the way in your own life is the canary in our mental coal mine, or The birdhouse in your soul.
I'm so glad not to be the only one who thought that about this tune! : D I try not to get distracted by all of the sirens along the way, but it isn't always easy.
That's actually quite a good read that I have never seen before.
definitely the best song ever written from the perspective of a nightlight
Are there others?
@@eliresnick _there should be_
Kids, gather 'round. The year was 1990. Back then, we didn't have your world wide web. If you wanted a song, you had to hum it to yourself. Then a man named John invented Dial-A-Song, and he used the money from that invention to buy himself a blue canary-shaped night light. And that's when something magical happened.
But what did he ge... how did he make money on that... whatever he was advertising in the paper? That's just the part that didn't make no sense.
@@0okamino not sure if you’re serious, but Dial A Song (DAS) made money by taking off the intellectuals and putting on There Must Be Giants.
@@0okamino must be some kinda nut or something. I dunno, don’t blame me.
Glorious
Genius.
I come back to this music video every year to remind myself it wasn't just a fever dream.
Ben Aaron now in HD!
I was so blown away when I realised theres actually a "blue canary" night light thats been a thing in the US for a long time and thats what the songs about. I spent 20 years wondering what the fuck that metaphor was, and it turns out its just a little night lamp product that was never sold outside the US
I'm a USian (albeit a fairly young one) and I never knew about that either, so it's not just you.
The song is just about a nightlight in general, or from the perspective of a nightlight. There were some blue promotional nightlights that Elektra made after the album came out, and the "blue canary" specific nightlights came much later than that, but the song isn't some gimmicky promotional thing about selling nightlights.
@@guardianofpineapple agreed. You would never see this song in a commercial. ua-cam.com/video/XsOguvolh4s/v-deo.html :)
I’m in the US, and even I spent solid years trying to figure out what the dark metaphor was (because with songs like Twisting, Stuff is Way, and I Want a Rock, I was baffled by a cheery song that seemed to make simple sense)
Turns out it is literally just what it says on the tin. Wild
Still one of the most timeless hits from the band, and also still one of the creepiest music videos to accompany it. I've always loved the song from the moment I first listened to Flood when I was younger, and this video still has always been so unsettling with those William Allen White masks and perfectly synced movements. A true gift to the world seeing the video quality updated for our enjoyment.
my favorite part is at 3:04 where it looks like flansburgh almost whacks linnell in the head with his guitar
You spoil me, Johns.
This has been one of my favorite songs for 33 years. Never gets old.
Keep the nightlight on!
Linnell should have played a villain in a movie based on this look
Saw them in Milwaukee at a wild infamous show in an old theater, a bunch of kids stormed the stage and it collapsed!
The same show they talk about in their documentary? That's wild, apparently the people who got sent to the hospital were bummed they missed the rest of the show
I'm obsessed with this song help
the spiralling song will make you go insane
@@SlippingJimbo(Everyone wants to see that groovy thing)
It's okay, so are we
I will *never* get over the way Flansburgh plays the guitar in this music video. I just... m an .
Also, the way John Linnell looks in a turtleneck. They always fit him like a glove. He looks so sleek and cozy.
@@floridaflamingogirl3119 he really does.... now i want a turtleneck purely because of that.
@@savannah6213 I’ve found it confusingly difficult to find turtlenecks that actually fit snugly and have necks that come up high. I did happen to luck out recently and find a snug purple one at a discount clothing store, though. I think your best bet is to look for them online.
i think the guitar has no strings! surreal!
God I love them
me too 😌
Beautiful. :)
2:41 If I foresaw the bone, the bone, does that indicate that I am the one which throws the stone?
Our only home is bone. Our only home is bone.
0okamino *make a little Cowtown in our soul*
One of the best bands ever, of all time, in the Universe.
2:48 how I always leave a room
I never knew they made a music video for this, man i love their weird but also soothing music
this is there best 1
John Linnell - manipulating Variacs in comfortable chairs before it was cool.
My favourite song by TMBG and my favourite song of all time.Favourite part 1:46
You mean the part that starts at 1:36 and ends 1:47? SAME! It's like a riddle "Can you guess who I am"? It's a bird shaped blue night light "blue canary".
5 people don't have a blue canary in the outlet by the light switch watching over them.
BAHAHAHAHAA I WAS GONNA COMMENT SOMETHIN LIKE THAT!! btw great taste in music
The dislikes haven't changed in 9 months
My prayers have been answered
I wish I could wear that blue turtleneck. 💙
videos are such a slice in Time! they were so young and now these two are old! hows that work again???
@@BruceAlarie still looking and sounding good nowadays!
@@floridaflamingogirl3119 sounding good but like me their look has taken a few dozen hits it happens but it shouldnt
I came for the absurd but left with a grin.
this video is the landscape of an insane mind! MINE!!
Isn't that the point of absurd?
This song always makes me happy.
I think this may be their greatest song ever, as well as their best video!
But, THEY'LL NEED A CRANE, also..
thats what im afraid of ! LOL
Ooooh, johns and compatriots, you are the birdhouse in my soul. Never failed me since the 80s
Whenever there’s birdhouse in your soul, it has to be good.
One of their best... want to dive into their catalog actually. Love them.
id like to but im afraid i wont like them like Birdhouse
im back its true i largely didnt care for alot of their stuff im sorry to say
I was introduced to this by a man in need of an appendectomy. Thanks Stephen Georg!
I almost forgot how bats**t weird this video was to me.... almost. 10/10 would still watch on repeat for the rest of my life.
Ah, the good old days of silly music videos that make no sense but are interesting to watch!
actually most of their songs have pretty deep meanings that can be hard to understand but it’s pretty cool:D
Whos your favourite? Mine is john
Oh man that's a tough one. I was gonna say John but honestly John also has a lot going for him
John
i mean i was gonna say john but if you like john better than john then i totally respect your opinion.
John too
John is *way* better than John!
That opening is iconic tho
I just realized that I've been singing this song wrong for decades
Wow this song is good They should release it
I’m a little glowing friend
but really i’m not actually you’re friend.....:))
Excellent. You will all exit left to await further instructions.
Deinterlaced!
Finally!
still one of my favourites
HD BIRDHOUSE
Excellent Lamps, Instant 5 stars and one of the greatest music videos and songs of all time.Words cannot describe why i like the hallway shot so much, the entire video is great.

What kind of a friendless human monster would give this song a thumbs down..
The best song and music video, of all time.
I've been watching this video since it came out and I still have no idea what it's about :D
It’s about a night light with homicidal predilections.
@@billygarcia9885 well, I know what the song is about, but the video has always just been an arthouse thing to me :D
Classic ❤
What a beautiful video, not much out there like these guys
this song was originally going to be 1:30, then 5:30 until they cut it down to 3:15. i wish they kept it longer
i sometimes forget how good this song is
Same here
this song is so gloriously inspiring---and its actually a song about a damn NIGHTLIGHT!

It does slightly break my heart that this is not coming to the UK next year
said who?
This comment was right for entirely the wrong reasons.
@@liz7457 LAMO
Oh no.
I deeply enjoy that this video makes exactly as little sense as the lyrics. n_n
Or, as much sense?
I'm guessing it's what is the perspective of you if if "unliving" things like a night light in outlet see of you, they see everything you do in your room or whatever, so it's kinda like you have a guardian angel... I can't explain like a normal human lol
Oh heck yes
Wonderful!
Shweet
that was amazing!
its official this, and art of noises close to the edit and virtually anything thomas dolby used to do are my favorites outstanding videos
Thank youuuu!!!
Don't let's start?

This is the worst part.
Crystal Bernard, from the hit NBC sitcom, Wings, appears in this video.
She was apparently obsessed with TMBG! Good for her.
Where? I'm looking for her and don't see her!

@Pop Punk Dot Com Who is Alice Cooper?
No it really is… feels very ritualistic and uncomfortably post-modern. Body language all very weird. I like it tho lol

Is that actually Grand Central Station in some of the shots?

@ParticleMen are you really John Flansburgh ? If so I freaking love your music
hi flans
First time I ever watched a UA-cam video without any thumbs down. (Dont be that guy)

@@BruceAlarie There are some bits of video and film made circa 20+ years ago where the amount of information (resolution) captured by the recording devices of the time was less than what a high definition digital recording currently has. For example, many music videos were recorded with just enough information to look really good on analogue TV. When tapes like this are turned into digital, they aren't as sharp or as impressive as they looked when they came out, merely because the technology has changed.
