Mike From Nashville Yeah! The Blue is different... The pickguard is a different red.. Even though Fender says it's sonic blue, it's not the same as the other ones. Plus it has that "punk" and different look, while maintaining that classic Mustang vibe.
I was heavily influenced by Cobain using Mustangs which is why I bought my 1965 Mustang which looks like the one from the teen spirit video except the one Kurt uses is a competition Mustang with the colored headstock where my 65 is wood. I love that guitar.
@@ryannolan9410 The 65 Mustang is a special guitar. The competition stripe on the 69 does look pretty cool. They made some re-issues with the competition strip without the matching head stock you can find out there.
Kurt Cobain was 5'9'' he wasn't super tall but by no means a little guy, he was just slightly taller than the average male height, plus he slouched all the time.
Yeah I mean Krist makes anyone look short, the dude's a freaking tower. Anyway love the mustangs, the Kurt Cobain sig and the pink one call out to me the most. I plan to get a used shell pink mustang and plan to put a humbucker in the bridge.
people are just afraid if the more they get into and expert playing the short scale they cant do the same on normal scale, silly but true.. well, short scale are more easier to bend great tone and sounding also good value..also very nice for recording or even stage use.. i use jaguar and so far my best guitar i’ve ever owned based on playability and sound.. duo sonic or mustang are the next guitar i looking for..
As a high schooler in the mid to late Sixties all the guys with money had Mustangs. I had a single pickup Kay Speed Demon that I payed a whooping $29.95 for. Mowed a lot of lawns for that thirty bucks. Always wanted a Mustang. Still do.
jltrem That must have been an amazing time to be in High School. The Fender Mustang was still pretty new then. It’s not to late to acquire one. Honestly, if you don’t want to spend. Lot of money the Squire Mustangs are really great. Or go for a re-issue. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the reply. I have over 20 guitars so rationalizing another might take some doing. Saw a nice Squier in Sam Ash a month or so ago. When I was young they only came in red, white or Sonic Blue. Yes, it was an amazing time to be around. Imagine having new Beatle albums come out. Glad I was there.
So cool ! I was just listening to a cd called "She'll Hurt You In The Blues End - Teener Garage Explosion vol.2 !" I was born here in Britain '69 but been a fan of pretty much all 60's music since my early teens. This cd features a bunch of bands from across America , small town high school kids & college students during the period you mention. Always been a big fan of these garage bands , the records on small labels & the gear they used ,their look and their outlook ! Must have been a blast 👌
Just picked up a 2012 mustang pawnshop special in lake placid blue, one of my best purchases so far, love the look weight and feel, and so much utility
My first guitar was one of those '65s. The single best guitar I've ever owned. It was my uncles in college and he gave it to me for passing 8th grade. Gorgeous sound and one of the most comfortable and smooth fret boards I've ever played. Was originally a dark blue but he did some textured sand painting, large chunks of which have been worn away. The guitar looks road worn and tired and exhausted in all the best ways. Unfortunately my wiring started to go out and a person I asked to repair it actually ended up destroying all of the internals and I ended up needed all of it including pickups replaced. I will never ever get rid of it
You have a pawn shop mustang special! I have one - phenomenal guitar- the pickups and switching are amazing. Also I love the belly cut and forearm contour. The Mexican ones are great- I’ve owned the Japanese version, and they’re not better. In fact the Japanese version makes the truss rod access much more difficult so I prefer the Mex. You should do a tone review for people. I’d love to hear a comparison with the pawnshop v one of your guitars with dearmond 2000 pickups
i love my mustang P90. that’s an amazing collection. i’ve never seen those wide spaces pick ups before. i love humbuckers but the p90 just has such a punk sound, feels so right to me.
Love all of these! I wish fender would make more left handed versions. I purchased the Lefty KC Jaguar when they were first released and did not buy any of the Mustangs. I highly regret it, although I am sure Fender will reissue them again. I recently saw Kurt's favorite Fender Mustang (SkyStang 1) in Nashville when his brother Chad auctioned it off at the Hard Rock Cafe. It was amazing to be so close to it.
Yeh, I've seen these, they look great in sonic blue too! I'm a pretty big guy buy always loved short scale basses. The PJ Mustang is really interesting to me, Id imagine you can get a good range of tones out of it? When fender do something right they nail it. I'm not so keen on some of the parallel universe stuff though. The PJ Mustang seems like just extras the mustang should have always had as options.
Awesome collection. I owned a Lefty Japanese 69 reissue for about a year. Upgraded it with a hotrail in the bridge. I ended up selling it for more than I paid for it. My issues were 1) the inconvenient truss rod 2) the vintage tremolo bar is basically unusable 3) the vintage bridge is hard to intonate. 4)the round radius 22 fret board is not best for metal shredding. However I still loved the guitar and if I have the means will probably get another one someday.
Great Mustang video! In 1974, I bought a used Fender Mustang in daphne blue for $100. It was from early 1966 made a few months after your red one. I still have it and play it when I get the surf urge. It's traveled with me from Canada to England and back again twice and then from eastern Canada to British Columbia on the west coast. In a couple of years, I'm moving back east and I'm sure that it will come with me. It's probably one of the world's most traveled Mustangs that has never been used professionally.
bluenazz Wow thanks for sharing. That’s an amazing story. That’s great that you have had that mustang so long. I love the daphne blue Mustangs. The ones made in the 60’s look like they turned a little green but still look super cool. Thanks for sharing and safe travels to you.
I love the mustangs I own only squire bullet strat but love it one day I want and will own Curt mustang love your gutars and playing them I also own Dime bag Darrell signature guitar by Dean razor back owsome but Curt is my music to follow love your stuff man take care beautiful collection bro Kevin I
Hello brother! Great vid. Is the Pawn Shop a smaller body? I would like to find one used but might grab a shell pink instead since they are more readily available.
thislisa Thanks! Yes, the Pawnshop Mustang is the same size body as a standard Fender Mustang body. They are very unique with the wide range pickups. It’s different than your standard mustang. I’d recommend it for sure. Just keep watching Reverb and EBay. You can set alerts. They come up. The price range is $500-$800. I’d say worth more $500-$600
All Fenders are great Telecaster, Stratocaster, Mustang, Jazzmaster and Jaguar. They all ahve something to offer and can't say enough good things about them. I'm a liitle partial to Fenders too, but, also love other guitar makes also. You have a real nice collection.
I know it's an old video but I'm just a mustang fan myself too. Really like your 65 stang, Cyclone fan myself got all except DZ one which is the same price as a 65 just like yours 😀cool video keep Rocking 😎🎸👍
I’ve always wanted a Mustang and this video didn’t help. Now I want ALL the Mustangs. The one with Wide Range pickups looks very interesting! Anything with a 3 way switch and no sliders is a no-go for me until I own at least one with the slider phase switches ;) Great video, thanks for sharing!
I love this video, the little mustang doesn't seem to get the praise that the obvious choices and the currently popular offsets get. I have always loved short scale guitars and really wanted to get a Pawn Shop mustang a few years ago when they came out as I'm a big fan of the Wide Range Humbucker too, sadly for one reason or another I didn't get one yet. However, Santa is bringing my son a white Squire Bullet Mustang as his first proper electric guitar this Christmas and I've been blown away by the quality of build and the sound of the pickups so much so that I want one now! £109.00 GBP with free postage means I've really been able to kit him out with cables, a decent gig bag and all the gear he needs - Which I would have absolutely loved with my first guitar in 1989. It's pretty much set up out of the box (could always be tweaked of course, which I'll do on Boxing Day when I restring it for him). What a nice collection you have. Great stuff.
Paul Grimsley Cheers Paul! Your son is going to love that Squire bullet mustang. It’s a great guitar. I have a set of heavy gauge strings on mine “13 gauge” you can go a heavier gauge with the shirt scale guitars. I’m glad you loved the video. The Mustang is such a great guitar. For sure try and get the Fender Pawnshop Mustang. Your right about the wide range pickups! You will love it. Keep an eye out for one for sure. You won’t be disappointed. They make a made in Mexico and a made in Japan model. I’ve only owned the Made In Mexico version and it’s great. All though the high end Gretsch”s I own and Fenders that are made in Japan are incredible. The craftsmanship and quality is amazing. So I may have to get a hold of a Mustang Pawnshop that’s made in Japan. Cheers Paul. Great to hear from you.
Mike From Nashville hey Mike, thanks for your kind reply. Hopefully he’ll get a lot of use out of it. I think that anything that really sucks kids into music is a good idea. The only issue I’ve seen with it is scratchy frets, so I’ll give it a good polish when I change the strings and I’m sure it’ll be fine. Perhaps I’ll look out for a pawn shop mustang in the new year.
Really really beautiful guitars dude honestly some of the nicest looking ones ever made and they're all beasts aswell. Wish I had the Cobain on so much! Aha nice collection dude!
1) Beautiful collection there. 2) A small note about Fender's lack of "patent": Patents only last 20 years. In exchange for detailing your miraculous invention, the government grants you a 20-year monopoly on it. On the other hand, a "trademark" is a word, sound, color, scent--something, attached to a product or service--which signals to the public where that product/service comes from. Fender's big mistake was their failure to protect their designs through nationally-registered trademarks. They tried to do it decades after the fact, but failed.
My favourite ever guitar was a Mustang. Candy apple red with comp stripe. it was a 2003 re-issue of the 1973 competition. I am still gutted to this day that I sold it. I really want another but £600 to £700 is outside my budget at the moment. I have one of the bullet mustangs and I am considering building one also.
I'm upgrading my shell pink 2017 Fender mustang with some Seymour Duncan JB JR's in white, a coil split pot, some Schaller strap locks and replacing the standard knobs that were on it and the pickup selector button thing with chrome ones to improve the look, I prefer the full on white, silver and pink to the white, silver and black. I am also swapping out the original string tree to a roller tree, I just prefer how it looks. I needed to either get the nut on it cut or replaced to because when I got mine brand new one of the strings buzzed at the nut. The guy who's doing it for me said that if he cuts the nut and it still doesn't work then he will only charge me for the replacement and not the cut of the one that's already on it. I'm pretty excited about getting the work done on it.
I just got an Imperial Blue Squier Mustang on Saturday! I'm planning on adding the competition mustang stripes onto it and adding a Ford Mustang "GT" logo on the headstock
i have a bullet i love! i picked up a 2021 jagstang because it had all the mustang fixings and i wanted to be like kurt cobain and i modded it with a tune o matic bridge. Finally i bought a Mg-65 and its fun to play stock. how would you compare the tone balance between your 65 and newer mustangs?
Dont know if your'e still replying, but how does the tremolo bridge work? Is it floating or is it blocked? I can't find much information about mustangs online so I was wondering if you could answer
For the 1965 Mustang it uses a Tremelo VibratoBridge. Like this one. reverb.com/item/2036719-genuine-fender-mustang-dynamic-guitar-tremolo-vibrato-bridge-tailpiece-chrome?bk=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJqdGkiOiIzYjBiNmVkNC1hOTFmLTRlNjUtYjdhYy03OThiYTZjNGIzODYiLCJpYXQiOjE2MjA2MDI2NjQsInVzZXJfaWQiOiIiLCJzZXNzaW9uX2lkIjoiIiwiY29va2llX2lkIjoiNDFiZjliNTgtOTFhOC00OTFjLThkZWQtYmRjMjY5Yzc0MzQwIiwicHJvZHVjdF9pZCI6IjIwMzY3MTkiLCJzb3VyY2UiOiJOT05FIn0.sOMTahdBLn2sQOH_gpG7Dr6Ev20EQK0fZK4VhnvL2sg
Interesting. I am also a Fender guy. I have never considered getting a Mustang however. I have nine guitars of all sorts, but the Stang is last on my Fender list. Nice collection and good vid.
The Hound Thanks Hound. If your a first time Mustang buyer I would recommend a 65 Re-Issue with the true mustang wiring and switches. Fender recently released some guitars they called mustangs but didn’t have the true mustang wiring and switches. Not that they are bad. They are great, but I would start with a Fender Mustang more true to the original. The re-issues are great and great prices.
Really nice stuff man! I haven't watched all your videos so I'm sorry if you've talked about it, but I wanted to ask if you've tried the Squier Vintage Modified Mustang? I personally would really like to compare it to that red vintage one you have and see how close the Squier comes :) I've heard from some that they are really really close to the original Mustangs, and if so.. then damn impressive :)
Thanks, no I have not tried a Vintage Modified Mustang but check out my friend's youtube channel @robthemeatmanifesto and he does a review of one. ua-cam.com/video/4oJ44nlL_TA/v-deo.html
I've got one of those - they're really cool. I find the more recessed switches and adjustable bridge saddles really handy. Mine has minor blemishes on the neck wood (it's clearly been filled) and the bridge switch isn't as smooth as my 2015 MIJ Fender Mustang.
I've just bought my second Mustang - it's a 2015 MIJ Competition Candy Apple Red. Love it! How do you get on with setting up the traditional style trem system? I've managed to get mine set about right but stability isn't perfect yet. Mostly down to the bridge not returning to the centre float position. I'm also interested - how does the switching work when you've got one with a humbucker (like the Kurt Cobain one)? I thought it'd be neat to keep the original mustang switching on the neck for one of those, then have coil splitting on the humbucker, being able to choose which coil. Love the 65 - one day I'll have one with a nitro finish. I'm considering getting shell pink sprayed over the vintage white finish on my Squier VM Mustang.
Hi Matt! Thanks for sharing. Mustangs are pretty cool guitars. They truly have a character of their own. With regards to your question on my traditional trem system, It seems to work just fine and I don't have any tuning issues. I have a Fender Blacktop strat that I experimented with the floating tremolo. Its set to how I like it, how correct it is, I'm not sure. With regards to the switching on the Kurt Cobain Mustang. The Bridge pickup's slider switch offers HB/Off/Split. Phase Reversal is handled entirely by the neck pickup's slider switch. I hope that helps.
I may build one more guitar. I have one more body blank left. I was thinking about building either a SG or a mustang. I wish I had a template for the mustang. If I just had the measurements of the body, I think I could get it close enough. I love mustang cars and mustang guitars but have never had either.I may look around the internet and see if I can find the measurements. Those are some cool guitars. That 65 is too great.
Thanks, what I love about the 1965 Mustang I own is the history. I wonder who owned it? How many people owned it. Was it it owned by some kid in high school in the 60's inspired by the Beatles or The Beach Boys or whom ever. Was it passed down? The stories that these vintage guitars could have if they could talk. I respect my elders. I sometimes feel I was born in the wrong time as well. Everyone is special to me. Everyone has a story to tell. Just like these old guitars only they can't talk. =) That would be weird. If you can build a mustang that would be cool. You can route it so you can either do single coil, humbuckers or any other pickup size so you can experiment. Take man. I hope you have a good day.
Great video and Mustang collection! I just inherited an L-serial numbered Daphne Blue Mustang. Have you had any issues with the old switches? Also, have you found the optimal string set to put on the Mustang guitars?
I like 11 guage strings on mustangs. You have to adjust the string height and truss rod. With that set properly 11 guage don’t have much tension. No, I haven’t had any issues with the old switches. Gracias Victor.
Hello, i have an 72 Competition and 2 Fender FSR Squier Mustang Vintage Modified and i Play 10-46 from Dean Markley (Blue Steal) and Elixir Nanoweb (the best).
Great video! I am a big mustang fan too, and it was great to go on a little mustang history tour with you. I have a ‘94 Japanese mustang modeled similarly to your ‘65.
Did you change anything with the Mustang 90? Been eyeing to get that guitar for a time now and I keep reading a couple of negative reviews about it. Hope you can share some info! Nice collection btw!
Hi man, nice vid! What mustang / short scale guitar has the best handful of a neck. Looking for something with a nice full/rounded C shaped neck. Cheers!
SpicyRamen They don’t make these anymore. You can still find them used. However, If its the similar time your looking for, I would recommend the Fender DuoSonic with the humbucker in the bridge and a single coil on the neck. The wiring isn’t the mustang wiring but a three way switch. You would be very happy with the tones you get. They are good enough to play Nirvana covers on and run $299-$500.
I love mustangs! You have a great collection!! I'm a beginner myself but I'm highly inspired by Nirvana and the whole 90s alternative movement. Would you recommend the squire bullet mustang as a starter or vintage modified mustang?
Diego Guerrero That’s awesome Diego that your inspired by Nirvana at 90’s Rock! Yes I would start with a Squire Mustang for sure. My first guitar was an 80’s Made in Japan Fender Squire 2. The squires are great guitars. Thanks
Don't feed Gangplank k? My 65 Mustang to my ears sounds very 1960’s surf rock / garage rock as well as 1950’s style. Paired with a 65 Deluxe amp or most Fender amps with that Fender sound. It’s a familiar sound you can hear on the old albums. However if you play with the switching and pickups you can get a more full sound for rhythm . The Tele sounds like a Tele and The strat sounds like a strat. They all sound different. If your interested in all three, play them first to see what sound and feel that fits with your style.
No I haven’t but I bet it’s a great guitar. Squire makes pretty good gear. You may need to change the Nut or maybe File and smooth out the fret ends a bit but from what I have played the pickups are usually pretty good.
I just bought a new 2017 mustang for 350, i think i got a great deal. Any tips on if i should change anything out, a lot of people seem to not like the pickups. I'm just starting and it sounds good to me but any info for stuff down the line would be nice.
Hi There! Awesome collection. I have a quick question for you... Did you finally change the nut on the Squier? I bought one as a mod platform, and I am wondering what size and what type of nut you got, and whether you had any reshapping to do. THANKS!
I have not yet, but I think I will. As for the size, I would look that up to see what nut size people are using for the fender Mustangs. I'll follow up once I find out and order a new nut for mine.
Thanks for replying! If you finally do, I will make sure I check your videos fro tips. Thanks for you channel, fr the info and for your help. Keep it up!
Thanks Enomia! I did end up changing the nut with a tusk nut I had on hand. Once I get my 11 guage strings I'll string it up and maybe to an update to this. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comments.
Hi! Thanks for the update! I am about to do the same, but I need to get the size right, and whether i need a flat-based one... But Tusq will be my choice! THANKS! I look forward to you future videos!
Hello Enomia London, Yes, I did replace the nut with a Tusk Bone Nut that fits on a Strat. It was slotted and I had to do a bit of sanding. All and all an easy update. Another person on the video I do of this model said that the nut he purchased for it was a 42m 9 1/2 radius bone nut and he said that works great. I hope this helps. Thanks so much!
Hey man. I'd like to know how the neck compares/differs from that shell pink mustang to your original '65. Well aside from the satin finish on that modern shell pink one, is the neck shape and overall feel in general the same as the vintage one? Thanks!
Charlie Chaplindeh The 65 is pretty warm and feels much different than the Pink model. All of these mustang necks feel pretty similar as far as size and feel. The best neck of all of these is the Mustang Pawn with the wide range pickups. That’s my favorite. As for the pink model, I’d say if you want pink it’s cool. Honestly if someone is interested in a Fender Mustang, I would recommend a Re-issue. The 65 is cool but your going to get great mustang tone from a re-issue also make sure it has real Mustang wiring and switching. The pink model doesn’t have mustang switching. It is a 3 way switch like a duo sonic. I feel that the switching and wiring is a big part of a mustang so when Fender sells guitars they call mustangs without the mustang wiring they shouldn’t call them mustangs.
Great answer. I myself already own an olive green mustang with a sweet maple fretboard, which is a modern configuration like the pink one. Just wanted to get your thoughts as I hope to get a vintage one someday. Mustangs are the best!
which has the thinnest/easiest to play for small hands? aside from the squier. i tried the squier bullet mustang and loved how thin the neck was but i'm seriously considering getting the pink one since they're bringing it back, but i've noticed a lot of necks are too big for me!
Actually they are all very similar. The Mustang Pawnshop model may have had a slightly thinner neck but those are hard to find. I would recommend starting with a squire mustang to see how you like it. They are great quality and if you love it go for a Made in Mexico or USA version.
@@MikeFromNashville thanks for the reply! i played one of squier's bullet mustang (12 inch radius, C shape) and it felt way easier to play than others I've tried. Problem is I want something a little nicer! I'm looking at the new paranormal cyclone and considering it since it's got a slim C despite having a 9.5 inch radius. Would that be a noticable difference between those 2017 pink mustangs with C necks and a 9.5 inch radius? I'm tripped up on how to get the smallest neck and of course can't try them in stores right now.
I'm just about to buy a Japanese classic 70s candy apple red Mustang with a matching headstock as my first Mustang since it has the classic sound of a Mustang. I'd really love a 60s one like your original(they make a Japanese 60s model but it's a Japanese exclusive so it's a bit hard to get into Europe), but this Japanese one was the closest thing I could find and I can't wait to pick it up next week. After that I'd love to get the p90 version just because I'm a big fan of p90s and it would be awesome to have em in a Mustang. I've wanted a Mustang for years but now finally could afford my first one. (pretty much since I've stopped collecting video games haha). Out of these which Mustangs do you play the most? I wish the shell pink one was available here as well! Maybe next year there'll be some new nice models too!
I love P90's and Alnico Staple pickups too, but I also love the Jazzmaster pickup, I wonder how that would fair in a Mustang? Totally different ball game I know, but Fender have so many great pickups of their own over the years (even the jaguar pickup with its anti-hum comb) I feel its a shame if they don't look back at their own catalogue first before they grab sounds from the other side. I'd LOVE a guitar with Wide Range HB's in it. How did you get on with the 70's classic? I think that'll be a great guitar. The matching headstock is cool too.
Mirza Yvsof You can find them used on Reverb.com, eBay. and Guitar Center. I don’t believe they are currently in production by Fender. There are. A lot of used ones out there.
So basically, it's not in production anymore but it's not hard to find as well? I'm actually looking a Mustang soon, but I'm torn between the 1965 model, or at least the reiteration of it in the Squier Vintage Modified line, OR the Mustang 90... Could you give me a recommendation?
I own a Mustang p90 and I love it but with the P90's it is a bit of a different tone then a mustang with typical mustang pickups. I will a comparison soon. To me the P90's tone is almost between single coil and a humbucker however it's technically a single coil pickup, but still it sounds as if you take a wah pedal and slightly push the wah pedal down to drop the mid sound. If that makes sense. I would say if you can try them both if you can. You may fancy one or the other and really it's best if you play it first if that's possible. Everyone will have different opinions. Tone is something personal. It's what you like and it's what you hear and that's what's important. So I always say, it's great to listen to opinions and I try and do the best I can to just play these guitars on youtube so hopefully you can hear if you like it but, it's still best for you to try yourself hands on. I would say, it's safe to say the Squire Mustang is going to be great to start. If you love it, then get a USA or a Mexican made one day. The P90, is a little different. Keep me posted, I would like to hear what you end up acquiring.
@@Dooodrhino Yes it’s very different out of all the different mustangs I’ve played. It is its own thing. Keep an eye out on Reverb and EBay they turn up. There is a made In Japan model as well I’m tempted to acquire and try. I for sure highly recommend acquiring one of these.
@@MikeFromNashville oh holy fuck!!! 13 to 1500 they going for .. sheeesh I can do a top of the line quality warmoth build for that ...thats the problem
yaoihunter Keep an eye out on reverb, EBay or even Guitar Center’s I like used section. The Fender Pawn Mustangs are really awesome. The Japanese is amazing as the Mexican made. It’s a punchy guitar. You can find one $400-$500 if you look all the time. I’d recommend one for sure.
lovely guitars.. which one doesnt remind you of Nirvana.. i have a vintera LPB, beautiful but Mr Cobain has conered the market on anything blue so I would like to pain it racing green... shame to ruin the LPB color but :)
I just bought a 65' - body repainted (shame, I know), amateur job. Trem bar missing. Original neck pup and replaced Duncan bridge pup. Everything else looks original. It plays real nice. $600 was the hammer. I thought it was an honest deal between both parties. I'd love your thoughts at a glance.
@@sillypengie2052 No. My thoughts are once a classic has been refinished, the integrity is permanently scarred. There's no going back. It's just a player.
I wish Fender made Mustangs like they did in the 90's MG-69 Japanese era. I've actually sold all my modern player-type Mustangs, like the shell pink one in this video, because they were terrible. Sounded gulpy and felt cheap. Bought some Squire vintage modified and classic vibe ones instead. 10000X better for half the price.
I agree however I would highly recommend the Vintera ii 70’s mustang. Honestly the best sounding mustang pickups I’ve ever heard. Very full sounding. The build quality is amazing as well. I’m going to have a demo of that guitar coming up soon.
Introvert I don’t have any lefties but I’m left handed. I learned to play right handed. Good luck on your search. They may be hard to find but they are out there.
The reason the Grunge bands bought the Mustang is because they were cheaper than the Strat. Don't know if your hip to the Seattle band Mudhoney. Those guys used Mustangs a lot in the beginning. They said they couldn't afford the Strat back in the early-mid 80's the Mustang was way cheaper. They used to be between $150-$250 back in the early 80's. But because of Kurt Cobain and the whole Grunge thing guitar stores want absolutely ridiculous prices for Mustangs now. I saw one for $1,400. That's absurd.
That's awesome you have a Daphne blue 65! I have an American Vintage 65 Jaguar I love. I think 65 must be a magic year for the Mustang, Jazzmaster and Jaguar. That's the surfiest tones of all. Even the new Fender Jazz Tele has True Vintage 65 pickups. It's a very authentic sound to those 60's Fender tones.
@@MikeFromNashville I have a '66 in Daphne Blue. It's got the coolest, darkest tone I've ever heard. The guitar was bought new by a guy from New Orleans, he fiddled with it for a year, put it away and it stayed in a closet for 42 years. His brother found it, and knew I was a guitar guy, and asked me if I wanted it. He sent pics and I bought it without hesitation. It's almost perfect, with 2 small dings, even came with a 60s hippie strap.
I actually ended up giving my p90 Mustang to a friend. Which I now miss!! Otherwise I could answer your question. You should be able to search around to find how they are routed. Sorry I couldn't answer your question.
The Sonic Blue Cobain Mustang just got to be the prettiest Mustang ever made holy shit
Daniel Souza It sure is. There is something about it.
Mike From Nashville Yeah! The Blue is different... The pickguard is a different red.. Even though Fender says it's sonic blue, it's not the same as the other ones. Plus it has that "punk" and different look, while maintaining that classic Mustang vibe.
Daniel Souza You know, I have never noticed that before. You are right.
I was heavily influenced by Cobain using Mustangs which is why I bought my 1965 Mustang which looks like the one from the teen spirit video except the one Kurt uses is a competition Mustang with the colored headstock where my 65 is wood. I love that guitar.

The pink mustang is the most badass guitar
I have the same guitar.
Very Frank Black.
Pink Fenders are god teir
I'm eying the 150$ mustang. I hope to get one one day. Thx for sharing
It's a great guitar for the money and the price of a pedal.
The bullets great! I had it for a while but ended up spending $200 more for the vintage modified mustang.
I love their shape so much...
The awful thing about Fender is, that they don't make a lot of left handed guitars.
Yeah
There are plenty more awful things about fender.
Kurt Cobain was 5'9'' he wasn't super tall but by no means a little guy, he was just slightly taller than the average male height, plus he slouched all the time.
AntiZer0 I didn’t realize that. Maybe because standing next to Krist Novoselic he appeared small.
Yeah I mean Krist makes anyone look short, the dude's a freaking tower. Anyway love the mustangs, the Kurt Cobain sig and the pink one call out to me the most. I plan to get a used shell pink mustang and plan to put a humbucker in the bridge.
Yeh, and we all remember what happened to him. He was short in longevity.
The dude had scoliosis, maaaaan
people are just afraid if the more they get into and expert playing the short scale they cant do the same on normal scale, silly but true.. well, short scale are more easier to bend great tone and sounding also good value..also very nice for recording or even stage use.. i use jaguar and so far my best guitar i’ve ever owned based on playability and sound.. duo sonic or mustang are the next guitar i looking for..
I will never ever get rid of it
Just bought a Mustang Special and must say it is a blast to play as I get used to short-scale madness! Nice collection!
Awesome! Thanks man.
@@MikeFromNashville man, today picked up a mustang with P90s!
Never would I have believed that I would find back to back used killer guitars!
I’d love to hear a comparison with the pawnshop v one of your guitars with dearmond 2000 pickups
i love my mustang P90. that’s an amazing collection. i’ve never seen those wide spaces pick ups before. i love humbuckers but the p90 just has such a punk sound, feels so right to me.
setphaser The Mustang 90 is totally punk rock. I love that tone.
The Fender Jaguar, Mustang and Duo Sonic my favorite guitsrras. I love them. I just bought the Jag Stang red party, amazing
I have an Olympic White Fender Mustang PJ Bass, freaking love it.
I have a 1966-67 Dakota red with birds eye maple neck in the 3/4 scale, my most prized possession!
I love the mustangs I own only squire bullet strat but love it one day I want and will own Curt mustang love your gutars and playing them I also own Dime bag Darrell signature guitar by Dean razor back owsome but Curt is my music to follow love your stuff man take care beautiful collection bro Kevin I
Beautiful collection the pink shell fender mustang is awesome, all of them are beautiful
These are awesome, I love Mustangs, what a beautiful collection, the 65 & the Cobain are my fav 👌🏼
I live near Jackson TN.. Huge huge fan of Nirvana and the mustangs. Used to have a Lake Placid Blue Kurt Cobain but had to sell it. 😢
I just bought myself the vintera 60s fender mustang and I love it.
I just acquired the Fender Mustang 70’s with the racing stripe. I love this guitar. It’s so well made.
I'm right down the street from Commonwealth and Harbor. Nice!
I got one of the p-90 one in polar white. I love it. i so wish i could have gotten a pawn shop one but i wasnt studying the market then.
I’d say worth more $500-$600
@@MikeFromNashville Thank you! Take Care.
that KC blue mustang ... it’s so pretty it’s hard to look at!! such a special guitar. great collection!!
Jesus that cyclone 🤤🤤🤤🤤
Nice collection you have! I'm getting into double figures myself of guitars I own
Hey why not.. =) It can be an expensive hobby but if you love guitars and how it make you feel when you play them own as many as you can.
All Fenders are great Telecaster, Stratocaster, Mustang, Jazzmaster and Jaguar. They all ahve something to offer and can't say enough good things about them. I'm a liitle partial to Fenders too, but, also love other guitar makes also. You have a real nice collection.
To me, the Fender Mustang is the coolest looking guitar ever made.
Also had a Sonic Blue 1994 mustang with a routed DiMarzio humbucker.. and Nashville TOM. all sold.
I dig Mustangs. Every time I play one I want to take it home.
sickb2200 They are cool guitars.
Love the Skystang. I have the Pawn Shop Special.
Yes the Pawnshop special is my favorite. It’s so fun to play. I want to get a red one made in Japan.
I know it's an old video but I'm just a mustang fan myself too. Really like your 65 stang, Cyclone fan myself got all except DZ one which is the same price as a 65 just like yours 😀cool video keep Rocking 😎🎸👍
Thanks man. I don’t post all the time. I just do this for fun.
About to buy a mustang 90. Very excited!
Shell pink for the win!
Beauty collection
GB_25 Thanks!
Nice collection. I have a 65 Olympic white stang all original, they are pretty sweet.
I’ve always wanted a Mustang and this video didn’t help. Now I want ALL the Mustangs. The one with Wide Range pickups looks very interesting!
Anything with a 3 way switch and no sliders is a no-go for me until I own at least one with the slider phase switches ;)
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Perhaps I’ll look out for a pawn shop mustang in the new year.
my dream guitar 🥺😓
Really really beautiful guitars dude honestly some of the nicest looking ones ever made and they're all beasts aswell. Wish I had the Cobain on so much! Aha nice collection dude!
Love the mustang's getting one in 3 weeks ¥359 pound for squair 70s vibe looking solo forward 2 it. Here eee come JAGUAR
1) Beautiful collection there.
2) A small note about Fender's lack of "patent":
Patents only last 20 years. They tried to do it decades after the fact, but failed.
dtorr14 Thanks for sharing. Thanks for your input on the Fender Patent situation. That clarifies a lot.
Thurston Moore is a big guy and looks good using these.
Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star
I'm pretty excited about getting the work done on it.
xDEATHDEFIENCEx That sounds great. Great upgrades. I’ll bet it makes a big difference.
I just got an Imperial Blue Squier Mustang on Saturday! I'm planning on adding the competition mustang stripes onto it and adding a Ford Mustang "GT" logo on the headstock
Tomas Lopez Can’t go wrong with the competition stripe. 🤟
i have a bullet i love! i picked up a 2021 jagstang because it had all the mustang fixings and i wanted to be like kurt cobain and i modded it with a tune o matic bridge. Finally i bought a Mg-65 and its fun to play stock. how would you compare the tone balance between your 65 and newer mustangs?
Nice collection !
Malcolm Hardwick Thanks!
SkyStang in the house
Dont know if your'e still replying, but how does the tremolo bridge work? Is it floating or is it blocked? I can't find much information about mustangs online so I was wondering if you could answer
For the 1965 Mustang it uses a Tremelo VibratoBridge. Like this one. reverb.com/item/2036719-genuine-fender-mustang-dynamic-guitar-tremolo-vibrato-bridge-tailpiece-chrome?bk=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJqdGkiOiIzYjBiNmVkNC1hOTFmLTRlNjUtYjdhYy03OThiYTZjNGIzODYiLCJpYXQiOjE2MjA2MDI2NjQsInVzZXJfaWQiOiIiLCJzZXNzaW9uX2lkIjoiIiwiY29va2llX2lkIjoiNDFiZjliNTgtOTFhOC00OTFjLThkZWQtYmRjMjY5Yzc0MzQwIiwicHJvZHVjdF9pZCI6IjIwMzY3MTkiLCJzb3VyY2UiOiJOT05FIn0.sOMTahdBLn2sQOH_gpG7Dr6Ev20EQK0fZK4VhnvL2sg
Beautiful collection..shit give me one lol 😂 jp cool vid 🎸💜
I personally would really like to compare it to that red vintage one you have and see how close the Squier comes :)
I've heard from some that they are really really close to the original Mustangs, and if so.. then damn impressive :)
Thanks, no I have not tried a Vintage Modified Mustang but check out my friend's youtube channel @robthemeatmanifesto and he does a review of one. ua-cam.com/video/4oJ44nlL_TA/v-deo.html
Thanks, I'm quite familiar with him..
I've got one of those - they're really cool. I find the more recessed switches and adjustable bridge saddles really handy. Mine has minor blemishes on the neck wood (it's clearly been filled) and the bridge switch isn't as smooth as my 2015 MIJ Fender Mustang.
I have gold, rock on
I've just bought my second Mustang - it's a 2015 MIJ Competition Candy Apple Red.
I really have GAS now lol Lovely collection 👌
Man I want a sonic blue mustang
The Cobain mustang and jaguar.
I love the squier bullet I surprisingly prefer it over the $700 Strat I own currently
How did Mustang set up the Tremolo bridge? Mustang’s body is too much thin!!
I’d love that mustang third from the left
Are you getting any of the 2020 models? The firemist gold is sooo nice . Would love to know your opinion?
Great video! I am a big mustang fan too, and it was great to go on a little mustang history tour with you. I have a ‘94 Japanese mustang modeled similarly to your ‘65.
John Caldwell Thanks John! I bet that Japanese Mustang is pretty nice!
Did you change anything with the Mustang 90? Been eyeing to get that guitar for a time now and I keep reading a couple of negative reviews about it. Hope you can share some info! Nice collection btw!
Which reviews? All revuews on youtube are great, and more important the sound of them is
Hi man, nice vid! What mustang / short scale guitar has the best handful of a neck. Looking for something with a nice full/rounded C shaped neck. Cheers!
Lemme get that pink one ☝🏽
Do they still make the Kurt Cobain Mustang? I want one so bad, but if they're rare I might just mod a Squier.
My 150 mustang is probably my favorite guitar honestly
Whats the name of the guitar?
@@manuelagonzalez1515 it's the same a s the squire bullet mustang but modded
I love mustangs! You have a great collection!! I'm a beginner myself but I'm highly inspired by Nirvana and the whole 90s alternative movement. Would you recommend the squire bullet mustang as a starter or vintage modified mustang?
Diego Guerrero That’s awesome Diego that your inspired by Nirvana at 90’s Rock! Yes I would start with a Squire Mustang for sure. My first guitar was an 80’s Made in Japan Fender Squire 2. The squires are great guitars. Thanks
Mike From Nashville Thanks a lot for your advice!!
How Do these vintage mustangs sound compared to strats/teles?
Don't feed Gangplank k? My 65 Mustang to my ears sounds very 1960’s surf rock / garage rock as well as 1950’s style. Paired with a 65 Deluxe amp or most Fender amps with that Fender sound. It’s a familiar sound you can hear on the old albums. However if you play with the switching and pickups you can get a more full sound for rhythm . The Tele sounds like a Tele and The strat sounds like a strat. They all sound different. If your interested in all three, play them first to see what sound and feel that fits with your style.
Have you ever got your hands on one of those squier vm mustangs?
Going out today to buy a squir mustang esp edition
Any opinion. Don't know what to do
which has the thinnest/easiest to play for small hands? aside from the squier. i tried the squier bullet mustang and loved how thin the neck was but i'm seriously considering getting the pink one since they're bringing it back, but i've noticed a lot of necks are too big for me!
I don't know if i should get the new squier cyclone or the squier combfy fibes 60's mustang
when do you think they will reissue the kurt Cobain guitar
Do you think they still make those Fender 1965 Mustangs? If not, is it hard to find at music stores?
Twooba brought me here :)
Bob Mootna Twooba is awesome!
I been wanting one of those pawn shoppe specials scince they came out, i think that they only made tgem for a year then switched pick-ups to p 90's
@@MikeFromNashville i wish I could find one localy.. how much did you pay for yours if you don't mind me asking? 800 to 12?
@@MikeFromNashville oh holy fuck!!! 13 to 1500 they going for .. sheeesh I can do a top of the line quality warmoth build for that ...thats the problem
@@Dooodrhino That’s the way to go. Just look up the wiring scheme.
Honestly I'd love to get one of those pawn shop mustangs
Or maybe one of those big headstock teles with those pickups lol
yaoihunter Keep an eye out on reverb, EBay or even Guitar Center’s I like used section. The Fender Pawn Mustangs are really awesome. The Japanese is amazing as the Mexican made. It’s a punchy guitar. You can find one $400-$500 if you look all the time. I’d recommend one for sure.
lovely guitars.. which one doesnt remind you of Nirvana.. i have a vintera LPB, beautiful but Mr Cobain has conered the market on anything blue so I would like to pain it racing green... shame to ruin the LPB color but :)
do you know if the shell pink can be routed for humbucker?
I just bought a 65' - body repainted (shame, I know), amateur job. Trem bar missing. Original neck pup and replaced Duncan bridge pup. Everything else looks original. It plays real nice. $600 was the hammer. I thought it was an honest deal between both parties. I'd love your thoughts at a glance.
Thats an awesome deal! Have you changed anything since then? (Professional refin perhaps?)
@@sillypengie2052 No. My thoughts are once a classic has been refinished, the integrity is permanently scarred. There's no going back. It's just a player.
@@dogsavethequeen7689 Ah gotcha. Awesom
e guitar either way!
I am more the Less paul kind of guy, I think.
But nice collection
You got any lefties? I'm trying to find the vintage left handed models in the 22.5 scale
Introvert I don’t have any lefties but I’m left handed. I learned to play right handed. Good luck on your search. They may be hard to find but they are out there.
@@MikeFromNashville I'm right handed and learned to play lefty ha. Hope I can find one as they seem to be almost mythical. Ty.
Introvert Wow! Really!? That’s pretty amazing. What made you want to learn to play left handed?
@@MikeFromNashville A desire to be different and inspiration from various artists, mostly Cobain and Hendrix but McCartney and Greg Sage as well.
Introvert That’s commendable. That shows true drive and dedication. Thanks for sharing/inspiring.
What type of music would you reccomend the Pawn Shop Speical one for?
Good music
What type of necks you think can fit on the $150 mustang ? Like as replace
The Soggy bread I’m not sure. It’s a squire so it may not fit a MIM or USA. I would have to do some searching around for the answer to that.
I wonder if even a vm or classic vibe would fit.
That's absurd.
the Joker This is true.
I own myself a 1965 Daphne blue mustang..I never play it I play my Jaguar and Strat all 1965 :)
Heaven😇
The cyclone has the strat scale, right?
can you tell me how the bodies of the p90 mustang are routed?
I actually ended up giving my p90 Mustang to a friend. Which I now miss!! Otherwise I could answer your question. You should be able to search around to find how they are routed. Sorry I couldn't answer your question.
