I think people forget just how dreadful the iPod was to use on a PC, the PC version of iTunes was dreaful. It'd just refuse to connect and give you entierly meaningless error codes, fun times.

Clicking cancel on the dialog where Windows is asking for a file will cancel the driver installation. You need to click Browse and find it, possibly on the CD or somewhere on your disk after the installation. Poorly designed driver installations result in this kind of behavior. Oftentimes, searching for the file it's asking for can help.
Also something designed for Win98/2K that's already asking for permission to install is gonna fuck up 9/10 because a step it tries to perform will be disallowed.

On page 21 there it is, it literally addresses this very file It's on the root of cd he had in the drive. It says that you should copy it to the C:\windows\System 32\Drivers folder... so he could either do that, or press "browse" on the dialog and select the cd drive. Even if you don't wanna read the manual, he could just use the windows search, type the file in and it would find it.

Windows may need some working out to get strange things working, but there's ALWAYS instructions/guides to be found online. Linux there's either hyper-specific guides, none at all, or derision from the community if it's something seen as basic, and with Macs while something may be possible, it takes a LOT of digging and work if it's something Apple deigns you shouldn't do (hell, there's a lot of stuff officially supported on OSX/MacOS that's just worse to do than on Windows/Linux because Apple said it's an advanced user thing so made it much harder).

The battery cover indeed doesn't last, mine is gone. Managed to get it working with a copper wire connecting both batteries and pressing them in. It's a shame I lost my usb cable. Still surprising that it's around 20 years old, and it still works!
