Killer feature man, Jim was a force of nature and wrote some awesome guitar parts as well as Bass! Taught me so much and I always tried to keep his spirt alive when writing for the band!🙌🏼❤️
Fun fact about Jim, he also was a Metal head in high school. But he hung around with a bunch of punks. He was also probably a better guitar player than he was a bassist. He was a good friend of mine. A few days before he passed I had tried to get him go see this band Calavera with Me. He declined saying he was going to hang out with his wife and watch a movie. He invited me to a 4th of July party at his parents house, but for some reason or another I didn’t make it. He passed 3 days later. I wish I would have gone. Miss you Jim. RIP brother.

Mark is a pick player and completely scratched up this cow sticker Jim had on his bass. Jim was so upset that he spent the entire Strung Out set ragging on Mark and Blink. He couldn’t let it go.
You are right. I’ve seen Strung Out quite a few times between 1994-1996 and made sure to stay on his side of the stage. Never saw him use a pick, he played with his fingers. I even remember him before a show he was sitting on a monitor and applying some kind of glue or compound to his finger tips. Rest in power Jim Cherry! Great player and the driving force behind early Strung Out. As others have said, would be cool to do a comparison with their current bassist Chris Aiken. His playing is quite different and the band’s sound changed fairly significantly when he joined.

This album is an all timer for me and was my soundtrack for end of high school/beginning of college. They do indeed have a huge metal influence, which caused some issue initially to getting signed with Fat Wreck and is something that they lean into even more heavily as their career progresses. Jason, the singer, at one point really bristled against being labeled as having the Fat Wreck sound, too. If you do indeed do a full album reaction, I would probably have to sign up for my first Patreon. 😅

Another great breakdown! I'm getting amped just sensing your excitement hearing these punk songs for the first time. Strung Out has so many killer songs. As others have mentioned, Chris Aiken does a great play through of Rats in the Walls. You definitely need to check it out!
Jimmy was amazing. Really good bassist, brilliant song writer. He would use a pick for some songs, fingers for others (just depended on what the song needed). He also played guitar in Pulley, then played bass and lead vocals in Zero Down (great singer too...he could do it all!)
Strung Out is very metal influenced. Check out Twisted By Design, lots of metal in that album. Also, day whatever of asking you to check out Matt Freeman's Bass Bunker. You'll love it.
I'm subbing this channel because of this song as it appeared in my suggestions. Thank you. My favorite punk album of all-time. Please do a track from side 2 (i first had it in tape cassette 😂). All the best tracks are there. Rotten Apple is a classic. Heard it so many times in skateparks in the 90's and early millenium, probably because it was on Survival of the Fatest. Radio Suicide, Somnombulance, Six Feet, Speedball, Wrong Side of the Tracks... I never get tired of side 2. Also, one my favorite bass tracks by Strung Out is in Klausterfobia, from the FR comp short music for short people. Chris Aiken played it on his channel.
Yes! You got strung out in! Bro i need to go through your older videos. Great stuff. I was a drummer in a punk band from 2006-2009, this takes me back.
Loving the Reaction Vids to Punk, Mark! So many great bands to even mention here. Notable stand out band for me is Pulley. Their Bass player Tyler is a hidden gem IMO. The song No "I" in Team has an awesome bassline all throughout. Keep up the good work
Friend once said to me, “the two most outward expressive forms of music is jazz and blues and punk and hardcore, no contest.” I’m of course bias, but I still think that’s pretty true.
Punk bands from this era absolutely loved first inversion chords. I think it's because it's really easy to go from a power chord to a first inversion chord (without the 5th) and it obviously sounds really good. You'll see the I to V (first inversion) to vi progression in quite a few songs from the time.
Another awesome video! SO is my favorite band!! This album is part of the Fatwreck Era that defined the skatepunk sound of the 90s. Ryan Greene was a huge huge influence in developing that sound.
‘Broken’ from their album ‘Another Day In Paradise’ is also a good song where you can hear Jim’s awesome bass playing. But make sure you’re listening to the original recording of this album. They recently remade their albums and it’s with the bass player that replaced him. And he’s awesome as well.
Love it! You're right about them being able to hang in a more metal setting. I always felt Strung Out played a lot heavier than a lot of socal punk bands. You can really hear it in something like Bring Out Your Dead from the same album.
"Jazz, classical, progressive, metal, its very from the mind. I feel like punk is really from the heart." ...*sniffle, I think I feel a big punk rock tear welling up. 🥲❤🔥
My favorite band! I have so much to say here lol -Your intuition is spot on. Jake's tone (plays Jackson guitars a lot) is great for metal! -their replacement bassist, Chris Aiken, is a guitarist who "got demoted to bass" (his joke) and writes a lot of their guitar parts. It's interesting to see a guitarist's style on bass. -i think you'd love some of their newer music. They slowly transitioned from skate punk to a pretty technical heavy metal (I love it all). Check out stuff like "Never Speak Again", "Westcoasttrendkill" or "White Owl" for a taste of how they've evolved.
I see a lot of people credit Fletcher from the band Pennywise with what became the fairly ubiquitous guitar tone amongst Fat Wreck/Epitaph bands of that era, a metallic sound with the bass & treble maxed & the middle scooped out entirely
As youre saying. This being rhe opening track, actually says a lot about the album. Its a banger from head to finish. Def consider putting it on you whole album reaction list.
@LowEndUniversity tip. Considering all punks are self taught and have lousy technics n skills... try using a 0.5 pick so you can dig into the strings as hard and fast as possible (without having to worry they'll brake and ruin you) (cause that how we punks do it) (hahaha). (Thinks that key to how to approach getting the rhythm and sound of a (sk8)punker)
One of the best songs of all time by one of the best bands of all time. Top 5 for sure. Glad you are being educated on all the best stuff. You rule man keep the videos coming.
Really happy that a musician heard the epicness that radiates from this song. The sound and vibe of this punk album are such a piece of art in my opinion.
Good for you to finally get to listen to Strung Out,saw them live a few times and they always deliver, hoho.Great video and even greater reaction to one of my favourite bands.😊
One of my favorite bands. Jim Cherry was so awesome and wrote most of their best songs. He was such a good dude, too. Saw them many times when he was still with them, as well with Pulley. RIP Jim. Glad you enjoyed his playing.
This one was awesome thanks! Your whole channel rules and really helps with the understanding of tempo and my ear for the notes. As a punk bassist, “Detroit” by Rancid is one of my favorites to play. I think you’d get a kick out of that one.
Welcome to one of my all time favorite punk bands of all time!! Skate punk is probably the right genre and how I’ve always thought of Strung Out. This album specifically was blasted a lot while skateboarding back in the mid 90’s by me and all my friends.
I am so thrilled to see you check out Strung Out. Going to echo many other posts here and say Chris Aiken's work with this band deserves a listen as well!
Glad you got to listen to strung out man . They’ve been in the biz for over 30 years and they’re so not well known and should be . The singer brings melodic lyrics . The guitars are crazy sick and they all are straight up musicians .glad you gave them a listen and as you listen to how they progress you’ll be even more amazed
I was into metal through my sophomore year then started to listen to punk with my skateboard buddies. The biggest difference to me was just what you said. Metal was centered on the guitars. Punk was centered on equal parts. Melodic but fast. Love what you do a ton. Not just the punk but all of it.
Such a classic intro and bass line. Jim Cherry also wrote a beautiful bass riff in the bridge of the song Paper Walls, on the album Twisted By Design. Most of their songs are in D standard and that was the remixed version btw which I feel sanitises the spirit of the original record.
This is my favorite band, unfortunately I started seeing them just after Jim died. They all are truly talented and something to behold live. The drummer left and they haven't been the same since. I'm grateful I saw them in their prime. * If you want to hear the bass watch some live videos. You hear it over everything.
Please. Consider doing a react to a band called The Big Boys from Austin TX (1979-1985). Founders of funk/punk and skate punk. VERY unique bass player (Chris Gates). Youll be happily surprised by this band.
Fat Mike was weary about signing them, but Jim kept bugging him…so FM said if he redid the floors of his home in The Bay he would release “another day in paradise”. So Jim and Jason went to FM’s place and put in the work. They’ve been on Fat Wreck ever since.
Yup, you nailed it, Strung Out is pretty firmly seated in the skate punk sub genre…heck I’d even go so far to say they started that sound!😄 Later they do get a bit heavier, more metalcore and technical, as they just continued to get better at playing and writing. They’re a super tight and technical band today, but they never really lose those signature Strung Out melody hooks! 🤟 My favourite song is probably Swan Dive, it’s a beautiful song, a real uplifting fist pumper that just inspires you immediately! City Lights is pretty damn good too, one of my favourite opening guitar riffs for sure, and the fuckin drums on that track, like damn! 😄Definitely catch them live if you ever get a chance! It’s an experience! 🔥
Hey man! Really been enjoying your videos, especially your deep dive into skate punk. Have you considered putting a Spotify playlist together of all the songs you’ve covered?
Skate punk is the best. Been in love since '94. The version of Firecracker you're listening to is remastered. I prefer the originals. These are like a trip through my past. All the stuff I listened to in high school and college. Takes me back.
❤
Strung Out is very metal influenced. Check out Twisted By Design, lots of metal in that album.
Also, day whatever of asking you to check out Matt Freeman's Bass Bunker. You'll love it.
Check back Friday... 😎
They just get more and more metal in their discography.
Remember reading somewhere that they were heavily influenced by Pantera.
Yeah, my favorite song is Calling. Love the Guitar. Played it so often in guitar hero 😁
I LOVE THIS RECORD SO MUCH!
It's 5:00 a.m. in SLC and I REALLY want to jump behind my drums and give the neighborhood a rude awakening.
“They’re cramming a lot of notes in a short amount of time” I’m a strung out lifer and you just summed em up with that phrase 😂
such a good band live especially
I saw them last week, they're still crushing "Firecracker" live.
Strungout has always been our thrash technical punk love.
💯
Absolute masterpiece this album. Has everything you'd want from this kind of music and more.
Smart friend
Punk bands from this era absolutely loved first inversion chords. I think it's because it's really easy to go from a power chord to a first inversion chord (without the 5th) and it obviously sounds really good. You'll see the I to V (first inversion) to vi progression in quite a few songs from the time.
Strung out are dope and Jim Cherry was great. If people haven't already they should check out his other band Zero Down
I live my life with no apologieeessss
Dont forget Pulley
His work with Pulley too
its easy to "sound good" with a pick.....any average guitar can "sound good" on a bass
He also played bass for a not so well know band called Frankenstein.
Love hearing these new perspectives on music I´ve listened to so much over the years
Another awesome video!
I really can’t stress enough how much need to listen to the horse, by a Wilhelm scream, or anything by those guys. Amazing bassist
Check out the video I posted 2 days ago! Top 5 Punk Riffs 😎
Thanx for following up on that request.sickman
Later strungout is metal punk hybrid. Exile into oblivion. First half sooo good. Black hawks over la. Songs of armor and devotion.
Dude, Transmission Alpha Delta!!
@@granthew71 Transmission is easily their best album!
This whole album slaps
💜 your takeaways from punk so far,, and hearing you say it out loud helps me remember why it meant so much to me, then and now,,
Love it! You're right about them being able to hang in a more metal setting. I always felt Strung Out played a lot heavier than a lot of socal punk bands. You can really hear it in something like Bring Out Your Dead from the same album.
Loved your words on this one. This album is epic, I have it for 30 years now, always playing!
"Jazz, classical, progressive, metal, its very from the mind. I feel like punk is really from the heart." ...*sniffle, I think I feel a big punk rock tear welling up.
🥲❤🔥
My favorite band! I have so much to say here lol
-Your intuition is spot on.
Noted! 🫡
So interesting! I love listening to your analysis, especially when talking about my all time favorite songs! Keep it up!
Your explanation of punk is spot on how i feel as well. Great video! I love Strung Out!
Welcome to one of my all time favorite punk bands of all time!! Skate punk is probably the right genre and how I’ve always thought of Strung Out. This album specifically was blasted a lot while skateboarding back in the mid 90’s by me and all my friends.
I remember going to see Strung Out play this whole album to celebrate the 10 year anniversary.
Love that you're doing these punk vids and showing that, yeah it's 3 chord music, but there's layers there, good musicians and good song writing.
I am so thrilled to see you check out Strung Out. Going to echo many other posts here and say Chris Aiken's work with this band deserves a listen as well!
Hell yeah i was waiting for this!! Thank you so much!!
Hope you enjoyed it!
I definitely did! Thank you and keep on rockin!
That whole album is awesome. Nice video!
Chris Aiken, his replacement (when he left for Pulley), is also a great player. Squier even gave him a Signature bass. Check "Velvet Alley".
Jim Cherry didn’t leave for Pulley, got kicked out of both bands and started Zero Down
Check infrared by strike anywhere
Jordan Burns drums are also genre defining. Strung out were dope then and their new stuff is also incredible.
Love your reviews and insights. This record never lets up, you’ll dig it for sure. 10/10 🤘
FUNFUNFUN!!!
Love watching you react to the music I grew up on. So rad. Cheers. 🍻
Love these guys. Their new bass player is a guitarist turned bass
Fat Mike was weary about signing them, but Jim kept bugging him…so FM said if he redid the floors of his home in The Bay he would release “another day in paradise”. So Jim and Jason went to FM’s place and put in the work. They’ve been on Fat Wreck ever since.
"Thanks for all that carpet and your songs"
@@nobirdsnomasters
That song was sad af man….
A friend of mine and I are the ones that got Strung out’s demo tape in Fat Mike’s hands.
Been waiting for this!
Love your thoughts on punk at the end. Spot on.
Been waiting for this one. Thank you!!
My pleasure!
My favourite song is probably Swan Dive, it’s a beautiful song, a real uplifting fist pumper that just inspires you immediately!
Dude, that’s actually a super cool idea. I’ll try to do that soon!
Rad!
Also, that was a great explanation of low interval limits. I recently got an Ibanez SRC6MS bass and had to learn that the hard way 😂
Skate punk is the best. Been in love since '94. The version of Firecracker you're listening to is remastered. I prefer the originals. STWB is my fave Strung Out album, you're gonna love the whole thing! Also, do "White Knuckle Ride" by Rancid if you can. The bass is insane! Or a Pennywise song like Perfect People. Peace! and keep up the punk reacts! RIP Jim Cherry, Derrick Plourde, Tony Sly and JMT.
