Imagine if there was an Archeologist villager where you can trade bone blocks and minerals for big emeralds.
So basicly historic artifact smuggling in minecraft.
I would like that
Yay emeralds, so fun...
@Egg T just like money in real life, its sole purpose is for trade with villagers.

I want It to feel like a collectable, like the music discs. I've spent hours collecting them and trading for them because they're cool, and I think whats so cool about them is that they're exclusive, have a purpose/ use, and most of all that you can get the full set. so that's really what I hope for archaeology to be like.

I think that archeology need to work everywhere, just chance of finding diamond block must be 0,0001
I think regardless of how the feature eventually turns out, this will be something that gets kids from a new generation excited about archaeology. In the same way that the Indiana Jones movies or Channel 4's "Time Team" did when I was a kid. I think in the 'bare bones' state we saw it at Minecraft Live, it feels like a Minecraft Education Edition feature - or a feature for folks who like to explore their world and stumble upon stuff. The real trick is going to be making it relevant to players who prefer long-term survival Minecraft.
I think your ideas for decoration make a lot of sense - comparing it to banners is a good call, and adding the 'texture' layer was definitely what sold me on it. I don't expect you'll get anything like diamonds out of it though, especially not during a cave update where you're encouraged to spend more time mining.
That's going to be the challenge for sure. I actually think the general idea of archaeology makes a stupid amount of sense for a game about mining, but it's just gotta figure out how to offer long-term meaning and not only a quick endorphin rush.
I mean I was already there because of Professor Layton but yeah I agree
What if they didnt just add more than just the pots but also plates and skeletons and more so you can assemble a group of items of a specific time area and then decorate your house with it, that would be cool too. And it would make for a cool flexing vault....

Omg I didn’t know pixelrufds watched you!!!
Ulraf, the dev who is leading this part of the update, has made loads of tweets about it and did an interview with several Minecraft UA-camrs.
From what he's said, it sounds so much better than what we saw in MC Live. The diamond blocks and emerald blocks were just place holders for loads of different artifacts that and the shards are just some examples of what artifacts you could get. If you haven't seen the interview, search on UA-camr Ulraf and watch the video it's 4 hours long but its such an interesting video I highly recommend it for anyone who is a bit sceptical about archeology
I think a good compromise would be diamond and emerald shards that work like gold/iron nuggets, 9 of them can be crafted into their respective gem.

I think archeology is definitely one of the most modded-feeling features they’ve added, but I think the stuff they’ve shown is amazing. I’m someone who wants to see the lore of Minecraft deepened, with lots of mysteries in the world.
The clay pots are also good decorative blocks and I can’t think of another way they could implement decorating it unless they just copied the same formula of making banners, but perhaps they could add what you suggested in the future, with certain colors and patterns.
Also Ulraf, the developer who seems to be in charge of archeology, has been hearing suggestions about archeology, and someone suggested we could find a skeleton dog through archeology, and Ulraf thought it was a great idea. He did also say in a livestream that archeology won’t be very large right now, but it will be expanded upon in future updates, like other parts of the game.
Where can I suggest things? Cause having the pots hold liquid (like multiple buckets worth) would be really cool.

To answer 4:19, there was a livestream with the lead designer/developer of the feature (Ulraf) where 4 youtubers were able to brainstorm some ideas with him and ask questions about 1.17 in general. When talking about this topic he mentioned that the brush would work anywhere, however it has a property where you can have set drops be dictated by the structure. Also he confirmed the diamond blocks were just a placeholder.
I think Diamond could work. Just make it so exceedingly rare that you would be crazy to try and farm.

Which is annoying considering how early all of these features are, it's fine to just suggest features, but the fact that he said "needs a lot of work" as if it's already set in stone kind of irks me. I don't dislike sarc as a creator, all of his videos are super well done, but this video isn't great.

I don't know why it is so WEIRD to have the possibility to expand upon that. e.ê
And I don’t KNOW why you TYPE like THIS.
Those are blocks and structures that you stumble upon naturally. This is a whole new game mechanic. I'd love pot blocks and better temples, maybe even a pottery station to make custom pots. It's the sites and brushing and whatnot that feel weird. I'm trying to wait until the update before I decide how I feel, but I'm not exactly excited right now.
Legit I saw you see that comment that explained why my god be queiy
james ‘funny’ morrison sometimes through texting you type in all caps to show you’re screaming or something, and if you do that a lot it will autocorrect the word to all caps.
There are fossils and ruins but there're little to no artifacts. The only artifact that I can confidently recall is the heart of the sea. And archeology expands on those ancient technology. In my opinion, this mechanic is fascinating since it gives you more options, especially with creative builds. For example, the ability to shave off layers of soil and gravel can make for more dynamic designs. And also those pots, they kinda make me excited.
In conclusion, I think this feature will most likely be... just there. From the looks of it, it doesn't seem to have an extravagant role in playing the game, kind of like bees.
Most of this video was “hey but what if we added the hermitcraft shopping district”.
There was even an auction a while ago. Lol
And then break their whole economy with diamond farms...💀
Facts. I hate economy servers, they all do it wrong.
Back in the REALLY old days of minecraft, servers used gold bars and gold blocks as money. It was easy, correlates to real life gold value, and the game already had a way to give change back:
Customer: I want this armor set for 2.4 gold blocks! I will pay you with 3 gold blocks
Seller: Ok, here is your 5 gold ingots change!
You actually had to be there if you were running a full time shop, to tend to customers, or you'd have to organize and meet up with someone who wanted to buy/sell to you one on one.
Now economy servers are a hybrid of cancer slot machines, loot chests, and overpriced items that you use "Server money" to buy.
@@muscleman125 thats all good except gold is farmable and money shouldn't be farmable

They will come back, if humanity is dumb and screwed up enough to play with nature
There were definitely giant mobs at one point in Minecraft. And I have a theory that they were transported between the nether and the overworld. there should be something like mob statues in the system to then try to collect them all for a cool novelty item and new collecting
Sarc, I love how your idea builds on the systems they've already added into the game. The auction idea also made me think of wandering traders, another villager feature that I think could use some more love, so maybe they could offer some even more unique artifacts and trades? I think more collectable, ultra rare/hard to farm items in Minecraft is a great idea. More customization and collection allows players to build an even more unique world. Keep up the great videos!
Yea, I definitely think the Wandering Trader needs overhauling in the future. The idea behind him is cool, but the trades are a bit situational for sure.
@@SimplySarc i love hermitcraft’s approach to the wandering trader. They made him sell miniature blocks of every block in the game, but each trader only has 5-8 different blocks. Paying him a diamond and the block would give you 8 miniatures of the block (player heads with the block’s texture)

I like that idea. I hope it gets added so that map makers could use it to create their own archaeological sites.
Welp you did predict that one!
I’m thinking their is some new archeologist villager or maybe just a map from the cartographer. This would allow you to locate digging sites, you can dig the top soil layers that generate. Once you use up all the blocks the archeologist will locate a new site which you can go for new spawns.
Yes a map from a cartographer to find it would be so cool I’ve never thought of that that’s really cool good idea you should submit that to the Minecraft page
Ulraf has answered several of these questions in his "Intentional Game Design" livestream, here are some of my notes:
diamond and emerald blocks were placeholder loot. he wants the brush to have multiple uses, not just brushing dirt and gravel. he also doesn't want it to work on some specific blocks, where you press F3 to see if the dirt might contain artefacts or something. you can brush everywhere but you'll only get pottery shards in archeology sites. {my interpretation of this is that there's a loot table for brushing "anywhere" and a different one for brushing in sites}. he's not scared of automation and knows players will immediately make afk brushing farms. he gives the example that you could get lower tier stuff like bones everywhere, to give the player other means to farm resources. he's interested in the idea of display cases for archeological items, but item frames are too similar. he's interested in the idea that pots could contain one inventory slot and be smashable to get that item. he's thinking of making stuff that is usually inaccessible in peaceful accessible through archeology.

Well, there going to be model changes. Remember the old campfire models? Yeah, those were horrendous. But they ended up changing them, didn’t they?

I like when the world has story telling, and my museum can be filled more with cooler stuff.
if we do get these masterpieces, they should be just "another painting but its rare now!", they should be references to the history and community of minecraft. ex. one could be called "the cobble mountains of spawn" with massive lava-casts around the scene with a huge obsidian wall in the background, as a heavily armed player surveys the destruction, all a reference to the spawn region of 2B2T. or "for want of some copper" with a village getting destroyed by a black hole, a reference to the Yogscast Voltz series, where sijn set off a red matter bomb to mine copper.
This is a very good idea

I just don't see myself using pots to tell a story in my minecraft world, I think there are 4 different pictures u get to choose from when making a pot and that just doesn't appeal to me. I feel like Mojang overestimate the self expression aspect of pots
i'm really hyped for archaeology, because i love being able to do storytelling in MC and this feels like a really powerful tool to be able to pretend-worldbuild; it definitely is going to need a lot of balancing, though! the clay pot idea is neat and i'd love for it to be a more mechanically rich system - one way of tying it in could be to connect it to the new cave biomes, or maybe have new minor structures so it's part of the Mine part of MineCraft?
So some quick ideas in regards to clay/ceramic pots.
- Have them customizable in a crafting table, similar to how banners used to be.
- Have different flames result in different final pots; regular fire creates earthenware with muted hues similar to terracotta while soul fire creates chinaware with bright, almost pastel hues.
- Instead of an auction table, have Wandering Traders buy pots for various prices of Emerald Blocks, or even other artifacts.
Wow I actually didn’t think about using Soul Fire. I also think that the items should be area dependent. It’s not going to make some sense if you find an ocean temple decal in a desert, will it?

the problem with this is that even if there is a bounding box on the site, and only naturally spawning blocks spawn loot, you can still farm it using pistons or by just mining downward. I like the idea of a limit of artifacts per site though-nonrenewable.
They should add salts seasonings or spices, to make food either eat faster, be woth more food bars, or even to make rotten flesh into some kinda meat. Salt could be mined in the new mountains, and it could add another element to villagers and farming. It could also give the jungle more resources and it could be a nifty little update
Always thought it would be nice if applying salt to blocks permanently locks them to their current block state
Good idea but salt shouldn’t be found in mountains.
You should use a specific block and place it for some time in the ocean to get salt
apparently, mojang said "no"
Hindsight is 20/20.
At least the pottery sherds you can put on pots look cool.
Recommend watching the Ulraf interview that he did with etho, cubfan, xisuma, and eckosoldier. He went over a lot of things he wants to do with archeology
I think you should be able to find "old scripts", which would contain unintuitive MC mechanics such as putting bookshelves around an enchanting table to increase its power, the structure needed for a conduit to work etc.
Thank you! This is exactly, what I had in my head :)
There should be an archaeologist villager profession that sells artifacts and buys them

I really hope this doesn't become a diamond farm.
Don't worry. A dev said diamonds were just a placeholder.
Also diamond farms arent really needed as they a now useless as of 1.14
@@gloopthemighty7165 Since when are diamonds useless? And what does that have to do with 1.14? Emeralds-- yes, but Diamonds? That's silly.

They should make certain unique items to archeology like a rare sword or a unique helmet.
I love this so much and I’m making a fortune on the smp by making custom pots for people. It’s artsy and it’s cool. Also I’m getting music discs and other rare items.
But I do really like the idea of adding more detail to the pots like color texture and trim. I also thing that flower pots should come in concrete color variants
I love the auction idea with villagers as it can also add to a storyline in Minecraft (if you want to play that way or even make a mini movie!) I really like the ideas you had but I really don’t understand how you came up with something so good and sensible to add in.
I have an idea that fits the history and storytelling aspect of archaeology but provides a real reward to going out and using the mechanic. In the code, during world gen, chunks have a slim chance to be “special” chunks, where there is some sort of bias in mob spawning. Maybe they have a higher chance of spawning with armor, maybe that armor is biased towards certain enchantments, maybe it gives really good fishing loot, or maybe diamonds generate more commonly. It’s all randomly chosen from a set of conditions upon world gen. You could never find a special chunk, though, at least without hours of testing or extreme luck. As with treasure maps and buried treasure, however, a special chunk always has an archaeology site near or associated with it. The loot you get from that archaeology site might inform you of what sort of spawning biases its associated chunk has to offer. You could then pinpoint the chunk (maybe by getting a map) and then use its special properties for your benefit if you choose to. With enough searching, you could find the perfect area to build that creeper farm you need, or an easier place to find diamonds, or an optimal enderman-hunting spot.
Ulraf said in the live stream with Xisuma, Cubfan and Etho that the brush will work anywhere in the world, which makes it a useful tool for entity manipulations in farms and for decorative landscaping purposes. You will get low value loot from non-archeological sites though. This makes the entire thing a bit like the Ex Nihilo mod. I doubt that advanced players will use it for its main intended purpose of finding goodies in dig sites, that's probably only done early in game... and depending on how rare the dig sites are, only if you happen to find such a site. Once you have progressed far enough you won't be interested in these dig sites that much if you happen to find one later in game.
In general this announcement felt very odd and out of place during the otherwise very exciting Minecon Live event, it's just so not-vanilla-like. To break it down, the only thing we get out of it so far is a new tool that can shave off layers of only three basic blocks, dirt, sand and gravel. And a new decorative block, whose decorative mechanism seems to have been an afterthought. This isn't a lot considering the amount of scale this additional branch to the game requires. At least this would be just one more thing added to Minecraft that players rarely use. I really like the auction idea, the archeology mechanics desperately needs stuff like this to keep it interesting throughout the gameplay and become a part of the game for more players other than people who just started a world and need diamonds quick.
I think what Mojang should rather do is concentrate on the core game mechanics and world generation, adding new mob mechanics that modders and market place creators can work with. When adding new themes to the game, they should do it big, like they did with the Aquatic, Village and Pillage and Nether updates. Not some tiny, half-baked mod-like mini structures... that should really be something a modder could add to the game.
Yeah, Mojang should finally open up the game more to the modding scene, actively working together with the people behind Forge, Fabric, OptiFine, Sodium and the modders of the SciCraft community. Even though Ulraf is a nice and positive thinker and does well in interacting with the community, I would have loved to see them hire someone who developed mods that massively improve the core game or who created a modding API. Right now, Minecraft for me isn't playable without Fabric and several performance, inventory management and building improving mods.

I mean you think It all that willy and nilly You also need to think They want to feel like minecraft not a mod That the point

I think that it would be cool if all of the structures in Minecraft have an archeological system. Like the player could find certain ceramic shards at a jungle temple but at a desert temple other items and different ceramic shards could be found there, this would allow for an adventurous system, grabbing loot, and an archeological system where you can learn of the history. I love the idea that the pots are with different colors and designs before you add the shards
I was thinking about being able to make an art wall, or stuff like cave paintings from the shards, like the scene at the end of the video with the rose on the wall
Everyone: OMG THE CAVESSSSSSS
mojang: we also have archeology coming to the came!
Everyone: THE AXOLOTLS ARE SO CUTE OMGGGGGGGGG
I would never in a million years think that archeology would be added
I hope its like the treasure maps, where you just dig through the ground and sometimes find special loot
A new sort of currency could be used specifically for the archaeology trading. This trading would be with a special villager called an Archaeologist!
Its interesting watching videos that came out before the update came out. Some things completely missed the mark, while other parts are totally spot on predictions.
Its annoying when people have issues with archeology that "it doesn't feel like minecraft" don't you know the word "try something new"... Im sure that if you haven't played Minecraft earlier and just played it firstime with archeology system you probobly dont have any issue with it... And also this is just a sneak peak im sure that theres more changes to it.
(This is not a hate comment..😆)
What worries me is that you can literally find diamond blocks with brushes. I mean, that's too OP! It makes finding diamonds too easy and not as exciting as it used to be.
Seems like netherrite is the new diamond now.
@Heavenly Waves Yeah I hope so, I really do hope so...
I think it is just incredible we have a person who has gathered so much knowledge about the game, it’s mechanics and its general economy that he is able to point out what fits in the game and what doesn’t. I am truly thankful you contribute so much to the community, SimplySarc.
I think a lot of his ideas are pretty awful for minecraft to be completely honest
i want this soo much this gives me purpose to keep playing and exploring the same world over and over and over again
This is so cool! Your ideas are awesome and i really want them in the game. Ur so cool dude!
This has got to be one of your best ideas yet. I especially love the auction idea, getting items you would never normally get with only cosmetic value. Good job!
It wont only be about building only skeleton dogs might actually come to the game as another player suggested and a developer replied to him/her saying that they need more ideas like that SO START SUGGESTING IDEAS!
Just give us prehistoric dinosaur-like mobs that we could assemble the pieces of and (potentially) revive.
More ruin structures...like castles in plains, ghost towns in mesas, Incan pyramids in jungles etc.

@@TheEditFactory that would be dope
@@jacksauce yeah and we know that there used to be giant mobs that left fossils at one point in the game. Maybe archaeology leads to a new boss from one of those resurrected mobs...? That would make everyone hating on this feature shut their mouths lmao
How about some sort of weapon fragments that create a unique weapon when combined in a smithing table along with other ores?
There are so many cool things you could get from auctions like maybe special banner patterns or crafting recipes for items like bells and horse armor.
I’d prefer an On/Off toggle in the create world menu.
I don’t want these in my worlds.
Same. All I see is another decoration block.
I don’t think Minecraft is the kind of game to have “lore” in it.

"archaeology is gimmicky and specific"
*sad ocean monument noises*
Ya kidding? Guardian farms and sponges are anything but situational and gimmicky
@@BenjaminAnderson21 uhuh, i have never once thought "ya know what i need? a blue stone, a water remover, and a weird glowstone/shroomlight" because all of those (minus the 'bluestone') are findable without going to the ocean and risking my life. sea lanters are no boubt pretty, but if i need a light block ill choose a redstone lamp or glowstone, and sand/gravel already removes water pretty good, at least for the scale i work in.
when i say 'gimmicky' i mean for the average player, not the hermitcraft community.
@@datonedood3791 You don't have to be an elite master player to make a basic gurdian farm. To the "average player," automatic farms have become the norm with the rise of youtube tutorials; and guardian farms are one of the best auto farms you can make.
@@BenjaminAnderson21 when i mean average player, i mean stuff that minecraft wants you to do like making a house or killing the ender dragon. if you play the game to optimize farms, go ahead, but im not that type of player. call me old-fashioned, but i think some auto farms can feel a bit unnecessary, seriously, why do i need 250 pumpkins per hour or 1000 sugar cane per minute. although iron farms are somewhat necessary.
though to stay on topic, what would you rather do? fly to the ocean hoping to find a dark, underwater monument, only to have to clear out a large area and kill all its inhabitants? or go to the end, go out really far away from the main island, and make an endermen farm? they both give good exp.
@@datonedood3791 Mojang has actually showed their support for automatic farms, even deliberately and knowingly buffed some of them. Why? Becuase optimization and automization are part of the beauty of Minecraft.
While most of the game's items are locked behind a progress wall, players have worked out creative ways to optimize the game's mechanics to more easily obtain its vast amount of resources; and on the topic of Guardian farms, Prismarine and Sea Lanterns is something that is almost impossible to obtain in large amounts without them, which is something many players need for their builds.
On the topic of XP, it takes impractical amounts of time and effort to get resources purely through exploration only. Your last statement, that exploring and farming both "give good exp," is widly innacurate. A guardian farm can give the player up to fifty levels of XP in three minutes. Do you have any idea how long it would take to do that through standard gameplay?
Of course, there will always be the people who say, "fifty levels is unnecesary!" On the contrary, fifty levels is VERY neccesary when you take into account the immense of XP it takes to deal with enchantments; even with mending, you're going to have a bad time repairing your maxed out gear without a fast XP farm.

I think they should add an archeologist villagers which gives you lots of emeralds for ancient treasures (i’m pretty sure that archeology sites will be very rare, like fossils or strongholds). I think there should be different images on vases, which would make it more or less rare (for example, an enderman vase could be sold for 50 emeralds, while a skeleton vase could be sold for less, like 15 emeralds)
Dude Mojang is just trying to give Matpat a brake
