  • Minecraft is adding archaeology in 1.20, and it’s already out for testing in the 1.20 snapshots! Today I’m taking a look at archaeology as it stands in Minecraft Snapshot 23w12a. How does it compare to actual archaeology? I have lots of thoughts about it all, so let’s dive into it!

    "The past does not exist to be useful to the present" - I think a lot of people see features in a game and think they need to help you get to point X or the end game but I love things in games that are just to have fun. It's just a different way to play the game and enjoy it.

      Exactly! Minecraft's a sandbox game, yet many people treat updates as if they were added to an adventure or open world game. 1.20's useless in terms of progression, but it's probably the best update in terms of decorative features.

      One thing I'd like to change. is to add special items that can tell a story specific to each dig site. Perhaps jewelry or a crown near the temples from some royals, maybe some ancient tools or cutlery or other food containing stuff around another digsite, or perhaps some unknown ocean ruins specific archy items.
      Currently lots of the items are mostly existing items.

    Hello from Mojang! Lovely video! I am one of the primary designers for Trail Ruins. You can see my previous work in Bastion Remnants and Ancient Cities. It is very lovely to see your theories, and especially the note about the color palette. Looking forward to seeing what else you will find when [redacted].

      Hello - I'm so glad you like the video! I love the trail ruins - they're fantastic! I didn't go into what all the stuff I found means in this video because then it would have been _way_ too long, but my goodness is there a lot there. Also, whoever had the idea to make the main structure a bunny (at least in the variant I excavated) - I adore it and it makes me ridiculously happy! I'm also so happy to hear you also worked on the Bastion Remnants and Ancient Cities - they're such good structures/sites!!! Also, something I didn't put in the video: I noticed that there's an awful lot of a certain dirt/soil type in the trail ruins, which, as an archaeologist, is a bit sus...
      So excited to find [redacted] things! Also, the sites you find the mourner shard in is easily one of the biggest lore moments in this update outside the trail ruins, and I'm a little surprised more people aren't talking about it. I might need to make another video...

    In addition to "the past does not exist to be useful to the present" (say it again for the back!), the ability to copy the shErds as a way to be mindful of those in communities where looting and colonial removal of local history is still painful is such a huge issue! As an update focused on stories and representation, that is currently a huge oversight and really should be addressed in the final version.
    Also, the stories about how Minecraft impacts the knowledge children have about the world around them are great reminders that this is not "just a game" in that sense.
    Thank you so much for this video, Archaeo! It was well worth the wait.

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому +8

      I'm so glad you enjoyed it and that the wait was worth it! And yea, the ability to copy the sherds is pretty key, but I also think it's one of those things that might not be on someone's mind if they're not from an area or community that's deeply affected by those issues and they're not an archaeologist themselves. It might be one of those things that once someone says it, it feels obvious, but until someone says it, it can be difficult to think of on your own...

    The point about the trowel though valid I do not think they would do this mostly because trowels are in fairly big modpacks so there is a certain layer in the player base that see a trowel as something completely different and it could be something they want to add in future.

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому +2

      yea, I agree - as I said, those two things are pretty minor, and the trowel is more of a 'it would be nice' sort of thing rather than a 'I'm so upset' kind of thing! Especially with everything else in this update - I'd _much_ rather have these mechanics and use a brush than use a trowel and have mechanics that don't do what this system does in terms of ensuring care and respect for the sites and finds or the reminder of loss when sus sand or gravel breaks.

    • @WhatIsMyPorpoise
      @WhatIsMyPorpoise Рік тому

      There’s also a clarity aspect to it.
      Most people, if they’ve seen trowels in their life, it was in construction or gardening projects. People may have difficulty grasping what they’re doing with a trowel, but a brush…
      Everybody gets what a brush does. It’s the ideal tool to represent how delicate the work is.
      So, I really don’t think Mojang will add trowels, even though I’m sure they considered it and probably wanted to include it.

  • @exyzt9877

    To me, the reward pool for the Archaeology system feels a lot like the reward pool for the Fishing system in the game. Sometimes, you just get fish, which is exactly what you'd expect to fish up. Rarely, you'll find Treasure items, like enchanted bows and fishing rods, enchanted books, and nametags (which are only really valuable because you can't craft them yourself, but that's besides the point.) But then, also, almost more often than you'll find Treasure, you'll find... Junk. The list of Junk items is much bigger than that of Treasure. A set of boots that were lost, rotten flesh and bones are not particularly useful materials when compared to a bow that has the ability to fire flaming arrows, and yet, they still show up in the list of fishable items.
    And, funny thing is, I've yet to see a single person complain about this? I think it's because to a lot of people, it's much more natural feeling to find trash from fishing, than it is to find it from digging it up. But, seriously, it makes SENSE that you'd find trash in these buildings because remember, Minecraft is a Post-Apocalypse. These ruins are ruins NOW, but at some point, they were DENSELY populated with large, sprawling civilizations big enough to build impressive monuments, seafaring vessels, and even a large underground city cohabited with the strongest killing machine in the minecraft world. You SHOULD expect powerful enchanted gear, or precious gemstones to be found, given how powerful these civilizations are known to be, but you SHOULD also expect a young child's favorite bowl, or a bunch of seemingly random glass panes, because these people were humans, and these are the sorts of things us humans leave behind.
    Another similar complaint was one people had with Simulacra It was a small indie horror game with a simple premise. You have, somehow (The first game didn't bother trying to explain this), gotten ahold of the phone of a woman named Anna who has gone missing under mysterious circumstances. It is now your job to look through the phone for any clues as to where she might be, and help locate her before it's too late. One of the game's mechanics is that a lot of the texts and images are horribly corrupted, and you have to play a small puzzle before you're allowed to read them, and a common complaint was that not all corruptions had meaningful hints, which misses the point that corruption, yes even that of supernatural origin, doesn't just affect important files, it affects everything from critical system files, to that list of song name ideas you came up with once and promptly forgot about.

    Your point about archaeologists using trowels more than brushes makes me wonder if in a future update, there could be paleontology added (suspicious RED sand, maybe?) that would use brushes for paleo blocks and introduce trowels for archaeo blocks- we paleontologists use brushes very frequently in the field (sometimes paintbrushes, sometimes toothbrushes depending on the sediment type- we also use dental picks a LOT, cue jokes about prehistoric dentistry).
    The fact that minecraft introduced archaeology so well makes me hopeful that on the unlikely chance they do introduce paleontology, they'd pull it off well- and maybe the power of minecraft on the public consciousness would help people to stop mixing the two up :']

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому

      I was hoping a paleontologist might chime in! That's interesting you use brushes so much, but I can see how useful they'd be for clearing off bones/fossils. We definitely do that for stones, for example, just expose them and then let the remaining dirt dry on the surface and brush it off for drawings/photos, but I think a lot of the time we've just used our hands to brush it off!
      It'd be really great to see paleontology added into Minecraft, especially given the public confusion between the two! They do already have fossils in the game, but there's not much to them at the moment. That said, the archaeology mechanic ended up revamping a number of largely unused structure types, so there's hope yet!

      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! And yea, the colour palettes are really cool - it's easy to forget just how colourful the past was! Honestly it's one of the things I like about ancient glass - for the most part, the objects are the same colour they were when people first made them. There are definitely exceptions, but if you study ancient glass, the colours and the difference in colour preferences across time and space are honestly about half of what we look at!

    Love this video! Though I wanted to note that the materials in the trail ruins aren't necessarily non-local, in the context of minecraft. Terracotta can be made from clay, which can in turn be found in rivers, and mud bricks can be made just using dirt, wheat, and water, all common materials that can be found just about everywhere.

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому +2

      Oh that's very true!!! Okay, so with that knowledge, that means this site was either a major power centre, a major trade hub, OR a major manufacturing centre (or a combination of 2-3 of those). The clay point is a good one, too, because these sites spawn near waterways...

    Fellow archaeologist here! Was thinking of maybe making this type of video myself, but as someone with more experience, you put it better than I ever could. Doesn't help that my native language isn't English so I couldn't call out some of the more inaccurate terminology for instance, which you did a good job at.
    I really agree with the suggestion of incorporating archaeology into other structures, chiefly the Piglin Bastions. The whole structure always gave me a Late/Post Roman vibe. They're living in the ruins of a once thriving civilisation, but they either don't know or don't care. Once again, the past does not exist to be useful to the present.

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому

      Oh cool - it's always fun to find other archaeologists here! I'd say go for making that kind of video anyway - your English is fantastic, and you could also make content in Portuguese if you like (I'm guessing, given your username?). And very much agreed on the bastions - I love that they're living in these remnants without worrying about repairing them, and it'd be really cool to see how their attitude towards gold would be reflected in both what you find there and how they react when you dig it up!

    • @pescavelho6151
      @pescavelho6151 Рік тому

      @@ArchaeoPlays It's not necessarily that I am not eloquent in English, it's basically a second language at this point, but given I conduct most of my work in Portuguese and/or Spanish, I wouldn't catch on to the more intricate/nitty-gritty English archaeological vocabulary, such as "sherd", and that was the one of the simpler takeaways from the video.
      Personally I am glad this video got made, you seem to have a much better videomaking set going on (and a much nicer voice I might add!) and obviously more experience. I had honestly given up on making such a video due to time constraints and the idea that someone else would make a much better video than I could, which you did, so don't worry.
      You seem to be picking up a lot of exposure from this video which I'm glad for, it's nice to see fellow archaeologists making it in the UA-cam "edutainment" (for lack of a better term) scene as of late. Maybe one day I'll make videos myself (can't guarantee they'll be about the field, or in English, or even that I'll ever make them at all) but so far my contribution to the scene in question is one new subscriber for yourself!

    Great video.
    First of all, I have questions:
    1. What do you think as archeologist about depth on which there are Trail Ruins?
    2. What do you think as archeologist about ruins of Ancient City?
    I haven't played with Trail Ruins yet but whenever I see them on videos and how deep they are I have thought "Is it still archeology or already palaeontology?" Such thick layer of rocks! suggests that sedentary settlements developed in the minecraft world milions years earlier than in real life world or that Trail Ruines were subject of some gigantic catastrophe, even bigger than f.e. the Vesuvius explosion and the situation with the Ancient City is even stranger because it looks like thing built overground but it is deep underground.
    I am glad that they've added archeology although I didn't waiting for it. I like current form even more than that one from 2020 because here we can uncovering every layer of dirt alone and there is no lore gap who beside us may be archeologists in the Minecraft world if archeologic sites already exist.
    I agree with almost all your arguments and propositions. Maybe the only not obviouse thing which I would add are suspicious dirt/gravel/sand in villages. That would show that villages are not new things but settelments with long history.
    I am not sure about suspicious endstone or netherack because we don't know anything about geology of End and Nether however I also think that piglines need more lore. The only place where archeology should not appear is Ancient City because it really doesn't suit there.
    I am happy that Mojang decided to add more lore into Minecraft together with archeology.

    Based on your comments in the Spawn Chunks, and respecting the nearby residents... What if there was a potter villager that would take a pot as a job block? Then you could take a pot back to a village, and a villager could learn from it, and make duplicates of it. (As well as trade clay, etc.)

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому

      Oh, I like that idea! It would probably need some tweaking of the mason villager, since their initial trade will take clay or give bricks for emeralds. It's interesting watching this now 1.20 has been released and seeing what's changed and what hasn't. I do think keeping the brush as the tool for archaeology was a good decision. Something about a brush - especially with the inaccurate feather - says "softly, softly, gently, gently" and emphasises that archaeological remains need to be treated with care in a way a trowel or a mattock just doesnt. It really sends the message to players - even those who don't engage with archaeology or never find a ruin but just know it's the correct tool - that archaeological remains shouldn't just be carelessly hacked at.

    It's interesting talking about how to balance the realism aspects to the video gamey aspects. I recently played ProGameBot's take on archeological sites which incorporated more of the silly Indiana Jones style aspects like a room that's rigged to fill with sand, but also made a point to incorporate more of the story aspects by making the backstory of his digsites being how the Illagers uncovered their magical abilities. It was really interesting to dig through and I agree on the aspects of the suspicious sand/gravel and how them being delicate still meant I tread through the structure with care after I accidentally broke one of the vases trying to pick it up with my hands.
    Basically what I'm saying is I agree with him that it can be improved in some ways to make the structures you find them in more fun, but also with you that the details that they've put in with the actual excavation process are all great as is.

    Being able to make sus sand and sus gravel yourself is really important for people who like making server games in survival. My suggestion on how to "craft" it is more visual, I'd like for us to be able to drop the falling block into an item entity on the floor and instead of it jittering and trying to escape the block's hit box it just changes into sus sand and stores that item inside the sand. I recognise that I know nothing about what is possible to make happen through code, but I just really like it when things in minecraft are made in the world instead of through a crafting table. Very informative video, btw, I've came away learning a few tidbits about archeological sites that I'm genuinely interested in learning.

      The Pictish D&D guide is also moving along! The research is basically done and we're into the writing and layout phases. It's been really fun to see everything start to come together into a really coherent book. The research was often on specific topics that related to each other, but the way we had separated them felt a bit disjointed. Now that the research is done, the writers have been able to reorganise things so that a really nice narrative thread flows through the whole thing, which has been really cool to see!

    Something worth noting is that the archeology mechanics encourage you to deliberately use weaker tools to mine slowly to avoid breaking suspicious blocks. This is accurate to real archaeology too, as, as you said, you need to dig slowly and delicately using precision tools like trowels in order to avoid accidentally ruining what you dig up.
    Also, on your point about lore-related block availability: Mud can be made from dirt, clay can be made by drip-drying mud, and terracotta can be made from smelting clay, which means whatever civilisation built the trail ruins could easily obtain all the resources they need to build it from any of the biomes it spawns in.

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому

      Yes - someone else also made the point about clay and mud and it's a good one! I wish I could pin multiple comments...
      Given that, I'd say it adds a third option to what this site was - major power centre, major trade hub, or major manufacturing/industrial centre. I know the amount of material that survives in these ruins isn't ridiculously large, but given the size of the road, I'm assuming this was a much larger site and a lot of it has been carted off or destroyed...

      I like the initial dig sites they had in Minecraft Live, especially the signs they've placed with ideas about what a structure might be. I can see pretty easily how the sherds and the sites themselves evolved from that into the trail ruins and revamps of other ruins around Minecraft, and I can see how they can expand that in the future, too. I know a lot of people are disappointed in the shift from brushing away layers to brushing the block and the artefact slowly rises out of it, but I can see a lot of reasons for going with the system they went with.

  • @abdullahi4785
    @abdullahi4785 Рік тому +1

    I think we deserve more rewards/useful things that are related to archeology because at it’s current state it’s a bit dull. Yes, throwing rewards in dig sites isn’t a solution but maybe we should be able to colour the sherds/pots (as you mentioned) or search for some very rare but rewarding things (other than sherds ofc)
    Also by “rewarding” I just mean anything that is useful or cool in any way, I just want something
    If archeology is done with updates, I think when the update releases I’ll just play with it a bit, maybe get the sniffer egg and few sherds, and that’s pretty much it
    In my opinion, the best “single” thing that we got out all of this is the pot, easily crafted, you can do a lot with it (even without the sherds), and it’s a very cool and unique block
    Certainly, your video made me more excited for archeology, but we still need something, and at this point, coloured pots is enough for me

  • @rookiepaw7305
    @rookiepaw7305 Рік тому

    There's not much else to say; this is a great review of the Archeology changes in Minecraft, and it's great to see feedback now while it's still experimental! I agree with most points of change you mentioned for this update, but one I somewhat disagree with is using a trowel for separating artifacts and earth.
    Although it may be a nice tool with the stats of "greater dexterity" and others, it may be too late for there to be positive feedback. Many snapshot and beta players may be used to the brush already, and many viewers of snapshot/beta gameplay will also associate brushes with suspicious sand/gravel. One other note is that it would be tough to compare it with a golden shovel, where a trowel might only dig suspicious sand/gravel fast, while a golden shovel digs other earthy materials fast. It would be odd to trump the legacy feature of a golden shovel, in which golden tools destroy blocks fastest. If other valuable traits came about when using a trowel, however, I would be all for it!
    Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Great morals to be picked up and an even greater taste of real-world archeology knowledge!

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому +1

      Yea, I agree that a trowel is unlikely to get added, mostly because the brush is already there, and adding the trowel AND the brush seems overly complicated in a way that would either diminish what each tool does or, as you say, run into legacy features like gold shovels, etc.

    Another hypothetical reason that the trail ruins might have so much terracotta is the wandering traders, maybe they are a much older nomad group than previously thought, maybe the wandering traders interacted with these ancient people at some point and brought them terracotta and the plants needed to make blue, green, purple and brown dyes, in the same way a modern player stuck on a survival island, a skyblock, or a superflat might get the materials

    9:13 poisonous potatoes should be possible loot in susp sand
    first time watcher of your channel, really nice! really made me appreciate the new stuff more
    honestly, i feel like archy feels a little bit incomplete as of now, in the most part because i feel like there's more that could be done to improve it, namely more digsites like smaller house digsites and bringing them to ancient cities which i feel like was built with them in mind (while not ancient cities which were introduced after both features were delayed, the deep dark and archy was intended for the same update after all). perhaps more creative and storytelling-focused items could be introduced as new drops when excavating digsites, though not a necessity (like poem books in digsite chests to show players that yes, written books exist)
    trail ruins i wasn't really sure about at first, when i saw them they did look ruined so i didn't mind them but i didn't exactly like the terracotta since it was out of place, but your interpretation of them being towns from powerful ruined civilizations actually makes more sense (except for them being relatively small to the point that they feel like villages but that's just a nitpick) especially given the ancient builder theory is a really popular way to explain structures. though i have not yet excavated a trail ruin myself (nor do i plan to, as i mostly play creative, though i did try my hand on building a ruin or few before) so i can't really say anything about how they actually feel to excavate.
    19:15 given how end stone and netherrack are hard blocks which brushes or trowels probably won't work on, i'd imagine new blocks (or suspicious gravel for the nether) would be used to make archeology sites for the other dimensions instead, but that'd still be really interesting and expands the possibility of giving these places new lore. end update idea perhaps?

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! I absolutely agree that poisonous potatoes should get added!! If we end up with a crafting recipe for sus soil types, then I can remake that trench 😂
      I also agree that there are definitely ways archaeology can be expanded, and I'm assuming it will be in the future. One thing I didn't mention in the video is that the trail ruins have a lot of dirt and coarse dirt in them, and I strongly suspect that the coarse dirt could be a placeholder for what will eventually be sus dirt. I also think with sus gravel, it makes sense to add some of that to ancient cities (or some other sus soil type, but gravel probably matches the colour palette the best).
      I think there is currently some variation in the trail ruins - the one I excavated in the video had different smaller buildings to one I excavated on stream, and I've also seen other people post images of one where the main/big building is red and blue rather than the rabbit motif the one in the video is. But I'm always in favour of more variation!
      I was thinking about the sus endstone or sus netherrack being more stone variants rather than soil types. I think sus gravel in the nether would work pretty well, at least around a bastion, but I agree it might require a new block for the end. It'd be cool if that got added, though one of the things I like about the sys sand and sus gravel is that they blend into the natural sand and gravel really well. So we'd need a new end soil type _and_ a sus version of that soil type. I suppose they could have it just spawn around end cities, though, to save needing to put the new soil type elsewhere in the end... 🤔

    Archeo, im trying to piece a timeline and I need your knowledge. Seeing the depth that the trail ruins are, and the locations where we can find pottery sherds, you think trail ruins and ocean ruins could belong to the same time period?

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому +1

      Okay, so depth-wise, you're right - they can be found at similar depths! BUT - all sites get buried at different rates depending on their environs and what happens to them after they're abandoned. So unfortunately we can't really use depth to talk about which is older or younger or if they're in the same timeline.
      They do all have similar pottery (not the designs on the sherds, but the colours and what we call the 'fabric' of the pottery). That might change before 1.20's release, but right now, since they're interchangeable with each other in terms of making the decorative pots, they would need to be very similar to each other to form such a uniform pot. So we can safely say that all five archaeological sites are at least making very similar styles of pottery.
      But even then, we can't assign similar time periods, because they might just have been aware of the pottery style or could be ancestors or descendants of each other. One thing that is different to the trail ruins is that they have glass panes where the other sites don't (at least, not yet, I don't think). So we could argue that the trail ruins are later than the ocean ruins because of the glass, maybe.
      But personally, since things change with each snapshot, I would maybe wait on identifying artefact similarities until 1.20 is full released. I know that doesn't really help you right now, though - archaeology is often difficult like that!

      excellent point, but I do think there should be a point in gameplay where everything starts being optional so that the player can be left into (what's almost) a survival-creative mode for the sake of being as creative as possible. This means a farm-grind balance and if something is not farmable, the grind should be worth it in the long term (like what they do for armor templates). For people that want to build massive structures with a lot of decorated pots, the time trade for digging out sites may not be worth that effort and this limits decorated pots as a building block you only use sometimes in survival.

    • @ArchaeoPlays
      @ArchaeoPlays  Рік тому +2

      Yea, I see both sides here - on the one hand, I agree that if you can copy the sherds, then people will be less likely to do archaeology once they have the sherds. But on the other hand, as I mentioned in the video, archaeology isn't intended as a 'loot' mechanic first and foremost - it's an exploration and story/lore mechanic. I'd rather see people recognising the difference between using archaeology as decorations for their base and using items _based_ on archaeology to decorate their base. There's enough archaeological looting in video games already, and it has a really negative effect on real archaeology and real people. I've been on digs where sites were looted overnight. The more we can discourage that, even through things like video games, the better.
