hello, I hope you can help me, I have an hp 14 dk1xxx and I don't want to change the 120 gb ssd that it has by default, I just want to add an additional ssd, does it have another slot or should I buy another type of hard drive?
I don't know if i saw well, but the laptop comes with a 2.5 inches ssd slot apart from the m.2? In that case, it'd be possible to have an m.2 and a 2.5 ssd together as storage?
Yeah. Idk if you can buy a ribbon cable but I’m not even sure if the motherboard will have the drivers to support it. I haven’t seen anything on UA-cam yet. Maybe in the future someone will make a video
are you referring to a 2.5 inch ssd or hard drive? If that is your question I haven't seen any connectors yet., but I haven't been actively searching either.
Can you help with locating a connection/ribbon cable that can connect for this laptop to a ssd that 2.5? I know that laptop has room for it but I cannot find it from accessories on HP website at all super frustrating.
I put the total in my other video. So laptop was $240. The ssd 500gb m.2 was $65 but they recently made the price higher. 32gb of ddr4 was $130 dollars. I spent $435 total
When you take out the original ssd, I see the connector type is sata (three prongs). And then the new one you put in is pcie 3x4 connector. Will this laptop take both?
I’m learning as I go along, but from my understanding the original 128gb ssd that has three prongs is an m.2 sata which you pointed out. The new one is an m.2 NVME, specifically a western digital brand that has backwards compatibility. I have the model numbers toward the end of the video. Since there is a lack of info on the motherboard I suspected that not all m.2 ssds would work so I went with the WD SN550 which is backwards compatible with older m.2 sata connections.Basically I played it safe and it payed off because if you look at the speed test for the new ssd, its faster than the original but not as fast as it says on the box. I have the same wd sn550 m.2 ssd installed on an old gaming pc and the speed test shows it achieve speeds close to the box. ua-cam.com/video/HKX2nncy-jE/v-deo.html basically I don’t think all m.2 ssds will work on this laptop. I would make sure it is a backwards compatible nvme ssd that can run on older m.2 connections
So I have the exact same laptop and I was wondering if I could put a 2.5" ssd in the empty slot and somehow connect it as additional storage(not bootable)? If anyone has any links that'd be great
Hi thanks for showing how to upgrade the new ssd but i have a question. My ho laptop with a same as your's is having a problem. The problem is that when i turn on it jus says there's a problem. And then when i try to diagnose it and reset it says it can't. What do i do,when i do my research it says a faulty ram but im not sure.
hello, great video but I have a concern, the port for the ssd m2 supports both sata and nvme? is that I want to buy one that is compatible and I do not want to make a mistake in the purchase 😅
If you look toward the end of the video, the original ssd is a SATA (notice the M Key). The new ssd is an nvme, but the read and write speeds for the upgrade (new m.2 nvme ssd) isn't huge if that makes sense hope this helps.
Do you happen to have a ph 1 or ph 0 screwdriver on hand? I can’t remember off the top of my head. If you don’t I will get the link when I get home tomorrow from work.
Hi Jace, great video, thanks for sharing. I'm interested in upgrading the SSD storage to 1tb and i see when researching there different read/write amounts. How does that affect this laptop and is there computer limitations that I need to be aware of with these upgrades? The laptop now has 8gb ram. I appreciate any insight you could give me, thank you.
Very good question. Yes the laptop has a limit for ssd read and write speed. The wd ssd I installed is super fast (I installed the same model and brand on my gaming computer and it achieves the speeds it says on the box 2400mb/s read and 1850 speeds). But when I installed the same ssd on this laptop the speed is limited. In this video look toward the end of the video, the read and write speeds is highly limited and couldn’t do the full read/write speeds the ssd is capable of
I am not an expert but check the speed of the exact same model and brand of the m.2 ssd I installed on my old gaming pc. The speeds are insane compared to the laptop speed which is limited m.ua-cam.com/video/HKX2nncy-jE/v-deo.html I just checked crystal disk info and the transfer mode for the ssd is pcie 3.0x1 and pcie 3.0x4. So if you look up pcie x4 maximum bandwidth the max it can go is 1000mb/s which explains why in the video i was getting a read speed max of 901 and write speed of 795 mb/s. I will do more research to double check this. I could be wrong.
The gaming pc crystal disk info transfer mode is pcie 3x4 to pcie 3x4. So that explains why it reaches the max speed. If we search max bandwidth of pcie 3 it is 3.94gb/s. Also glad you have upgraded to 8gb of ram! I think when you buy an M.2 SSD and install it on this hp laptop, it won't achieve the full read/write speeds. It would be faster than the original ssd though because of the transfer mode is limited on this 2020 hp. it's also possible there's something you need to do to unlock the full transfer mode on this laptop.
I just bought mine from Amazon and I'm a Photographer. Can I buy more RAM from Amazon? P.S. I haven't even received mine, yet. And I'm excited! Previosly, I was an Apple MacBook Pro user. And I just couldn't afford the high price. Is it easy to remove or open the laptop?? Thank you. I subscribed.
Hi yes. I made a video with 32gb ram upgrade. Yes I bought my ram from amazon too. Make sure to double check the speed of the ram before you buy more ram. Opening up the laptop isnt too hard. Just take it slow and make sure you have a plastic prying tool. The good thing about this laptop is that it’s a 14 inch, which is very common so many videos on opening up this type of laptop
I also purchased an Android Flash Drive for my Smartphone to transfer all photography to be in the laptop. Is this a concern like the need to know specifics on that too?
It depends if you have a lot of files. 128gb of storage isn’t a lot but you could use an external hard drive or flash drive. If you know how to create and load an image you could always upgrade the ssd in the future. In terms of windows s mode that comes with the laptop I made a video on how to get out of windows s mode since people kept asking. It’s an easy process and should be FREE. So basically you should be able to go to windows home edition on this laptop free and it’s a simple process
Not too familiar with all types of android flash drive but I recommend going out of windows s mode to windows home edition first so that you are not limited. Windows s mode has a lot of restrictions, can’t even install chrome or firefox. It’s something windows created for security. But almost everyone i know needs to install things like zoom and chrome so they took out windows s mode. Hope this helps
