  • how to setup a new saltwater aquarium for beginners. cycle your new saltwater tank : prevent fish death. how to cycle a saltwater tank. new saltwater aquarium fish dying - cycle your new tank to prevent fish death - rotter tube reef. When you first set up your aquarium, the biological filter is not ready to handle the waste the fish are producing. Getting the biological filter up-to-speed requires putting the tank through a process called cycling the aquarium. This allows naturally occurring and ubiquitous bacteria to populate the filter media in the aquarium's filter and begin processing the ammonia produced by the fish into (eventually) relatively harmless nitrate which you can then remove with your regular, weekly 10-15% water changes.

    New aquarium owners are more likely to make simple mistakes, such as over feeding the fish, which will contribute to poor water quality, increasing the waste related problems explained above, or having the temperature wrong, which increases the general stress the fish are under.
    What Can I Do to Avoid 'New Tank Syndrome?'
    Understand the cycling process.
    Keep the population in your tank low until the tank has cycled.
    Keep up with the extra water changes necessary during the cycling process.
    Do some research on the care requirements of the fish you are interested in keeping before purchasing the fish.
    Be careful with your tank maintenance.
    Watch your feeding, make sure the fish eat everything offered in under two minutes.
    These simple tips should help you avoid unnecessary losses to 'new tank syndrome' while your new aquarium is cycling.
    Can't I Just Add Something to the Tank to Avoid 'New Tank Syndrome' altogether?
    Simply put, no, you can't. There are people that will try to sell you ammonia removers which will remove the ammonia, but make the cycling process more difficult. Others will try to sell you bacteria boosters to make the tank magically cycle overnight, but these are highly unreliable.
    rotter tube reef saltwater aquarium care that's fun and honest.

    Thanks for posting this and the specifics. My wife, Crystal, told me to be sure to let you know that this helped a lot and she liked the simple explanation of the cycling process! As newbies, this is a big help. I had read about the cycling process before but that's the first I'd heard anyone mentioning using shrimp as starter. BIG THUMBS UP!!!
    In our original plan, we were going to give the DrTim's "One and Only" a try and watch the measure levels based on the instructions before adding fish. We're trying to be careful to do this the right way the 1st time. We bought a 75 gal tank but returned it for a 90 gal with built-in overflow. Also, we picked up a used 30 gal tank for quarantine area. Just got two Eheim 250W heaters (one for failover safety). Now we're waiting for our store bought cabinet to be modified by a handy friend so we can get a 20-30 gal sump underneath it safely & with greater weight support. (We had the same problem that you had in your 2015 video cause the sump wouldn't fit underneath). The next plan is to have an 8"x8" or hopefully, a little larger, bio refugium along with various media to help maintain clean, properly balanced water. (This is the sump reefbuilders.com/2016/08/01/freedom-sump-proclear-aquatic-systems-launches-its-own-upscale-filter/).
    Still lots of things to learn and continue working toward before the first clown fish can ring our doorbell. :-)

      you're welcome! awesome job you guys are doing! i would recommend highly the seachem ammonia badge. you can get it from amazon here. amzn.to/2f2vPcy
      You don't need to test the water for ammonia. just stick this in the tank and watch the color. works great. replace each year. when i started i also fed the tank fish food a little pinch each day for a week. i didn't use anything in a bottle. also, NEVER add live rock to your tank if you have fish in it. if that rock has parasites in it, it will kill your fish. you will hear the term ICK (ich) a lot. it's a parasite that kills fish.....marine velvet is worse and kills all fish within a day or two. never ever put a new fish in your main tank before keeping in QT for 4 weeks. there are tricks to that too. if that fish has parasites, it will spread to your tank rapidly. i always use dry rock off the shelf and let the good bacteria grow on it. bacteria forms by breaking down the ammonia in the water from the shrimp you put in....as the video said. you'll learn it all.

    • @TimHarris-photog
      @TimHarris-photog 7 років тому +1

      OH GREAT!!! Thanks for the recommendation. I'll order the ammonia badge within the next couple of days. That's good info about the quarantine period too. We didn't know how long that should last.
      The guys in the local aquatic store originally suggested live rock but after a few videos and reviews on aquascaping, we decided to be safe, as you suggested, and more eco-friendly by using something called Reef Rock which needs to be cured but it's not pulled from the seas' corals so it won't have the critters to damage. Hopefully it will look OK too after some time. Right now, all we see is a big, empty glass tank sitting on the floor but our dreams are big :-) When you get a chance, please let us know if you're still producing the Rotter Tubes?

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  7 років тому +1

      you guys are doing a great job. you can use live rock when you start a tank. that way, if there are parasites on it, they will all die but only if you wait 6 weeks minimum to put fish in. I'd go 8 weeks to be safe. when i started, i bought a small live rock. it had marine velvet on it. you can't see it. water tests don't show it. it wiped out all my fish in 2 days. i had no idea what was going on. no one knew the answer. no stores, no one. i found the answer buried on youtube. i researched my ass off on this parasite. you'll hear that stress causes ich parasites or marine velvet. WRONG. you'll hear feeding garlic cures your fish....WRONG. quarantine is the only thing. i had to remove all fish, taking all the rocks out, and putting them in a QT for 8 weeks and my main tank stayed empty. no issues ever since. tank is clean and parasite free. don't even put new coral right in. i QT coral in saltwater in a 2 gallon tank for 6 weeks. i'm strict....it's not worth it.

    Let me expand on my lower comment we used under gravel filters with dolomite as a substrate 1 1/2 inches on top. When you are running 3to 500 tanks this worked best for a quick cycle. Ammonia was never in the danger zone. Fish were lost mostly in shipping bags or over drugged when caught. I kept 6 moorish idols for six years in a 500 gallon tank . My friends and I caught them in Hawaii. I then donated them to the Brooklyn aquarium . Steven channel is the best he knows his stuff keep jamin A

    I've been setting up tanks since the 80s and can tell you that it's perfectly fine to set up a new saltwater tank and add a fish right away. I set up a 6 gallon little saltwater tank. Bought some live sand, mixed my own saltwater, tossed in a maroon clown the following day and he lived great for 5 solid years. You don't really need to look into it too much, unless you're doing some fragile fish.

      @@ROTTERtube Living proof, so don't know what else to tell ya. Where exactly are you getting all your info from anyways? There's no law book telling you that you have to do it this way to achieve success. I can set up a tank, throw in a bit of sand, some live rock and fish day 1, with no problems! Youre looking for hits man, comon. Also, I was just at my local fish store over here talking with the owner, and we got into a discussion about water changes and setting up a tank for the first time. His sister in law had a 30 gallon salt tank set up with a couple maroon clowns and only did 2 water changes in the last 7 years. They are still living. If you would like, I can send you some helpful info on what you would need to set up a tank and be able to throw fish in day 1. There are certain methods you can use. You don't need to buy all these crazy products or take major precautions when dealing with certain saltwater fish. Believe me, I have done it and am currently doing it. It is kinda funny listening to know it all fish people like yourself, because you really have no idea. It's easier than you think, so no need to over think it too much. Your video is false.

    When do you add the cleaner species like crabs, snails and urchins? Also if I wanted to add red mangroves to help balance my tank would I add it during cycling or wait till the cycling was over? Also if I'm using live sand and shrimp method do I have to have live rocks? My pet store said I need both but I really do not want the smell from live rocks.
    My plan was to add live sand first, wait for it to balance then add live rocks, mangroves and cleaner species, wait for it to balance, and then add my fish. Is this a good course of action?

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  5 років тому

      great questions. you can add your inverts after the ammonia is gone...at zero. around a few weeks roughly that is. you will need to test your water for ammonia or get the ammonia badge. amzn.to/2JY2UUP
      you can try a tank with no live rock and see what happens. i can't recommend it but i will tell you the bacteria you need lives everywhere in the tank...the sand, the glass, the sump, everywhere, you might be fine. that's up to you. i would add everything at once....sand, rock, etc. put fish in 6 weeks after the live rock. i never buy anything live though....i let bacteria build on its own for many reasons.

But I do have some questions do you believe in adding bacteria or live rock or live sand and/or would you be worried about critters getting in also the other question is some people say that the tank will crash if you don't have live sand or rock because some of those critters that are in the rocks or in the sand are needed to balance out the treitas and waste?

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  6 років тому

      thanks for watching Joe. i don't add bacteria from a bottle. lots of times the bacteria can be dead, so you're adding bad stuff to your tank. i do it the natural way. i add the shrimp and buy dry rock and let it start on its own. i will buy live sand, which of course will have some death in it but i'm not worried. i let the shrimp and food break down, which starts the process

    Should i wait for the lighting to be installed or can the bacteria grow in minimal light?

      Half dozen should do it. I also fed my tank a few pellets daily for about a week until ammonia appeared. you can do it without the light, i did. as for the skimmer, there won't be much of anything to skim out since there are no fish. you can let the skimmer off until there are a couple fish in there.

    Thank you so much for great videos! My question is I’m in middle of cycling my saltwater tank and its been about a month! I feed my 3 puffer fishes once a day and seems that ammonia keep going up when nitrite and nitrate is at 0. People say when you water change to get rid of ammonia you are stepping back to 1st step of cycling and like this your tank doesn’t cycle! My question is im changing about 20% water every 2-3 days to bring ammonia level down so my fish wont die! Is my tank still going to cycle like this even im changing 20% water every few days? Thanks a lot for your help 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  6 років тому

      hey, you're supposed to cycle your tank first, which means no water changes. put one fish in after it cycles.....then monitor ammonia then put in another fish like a month later so the tank gets used to it. putting fish in first will take much longer and their lives will be at risk. you can do this but it will take a lot longer. or.....you can put them in a 2nd tank and monitor the ammonia, waiting for the main tank to cycle. i can't tell you what to do......but i can tell you how to do it.

    Hello lovely video really got some idea how to setup an salt water aquarium
    Just wanted to know what subtracts to add for the external canister filtration.
    can we add Bio-Rio for the flirtation or just Bio-Balls and Activated Carbon is enough for the aquarium?
    Please help out..

      I don't use bio balls only live rock and your sand will do that job as well. bio balls will trap fish waste and uneaten food. just use nature. i don't add any bio rio or anything out of a bottle either.

    rotter tube reef, when cycling im planning on adding the shrimp leaving it for around three days to decompose then removing, whilst everything is running bar the skimmer, then after three days turn skimmer on and resume cycling normally ?, or would you have the skimmer on from day one ?, also planning on cycling with no lights to stop algae as much as i can, also from what i gather i should only have to do one water change during the cycle when the ammonia/nitrites reach zero & the nitrates are high just to get them down then add CUC .. right ?, or would a weekly 15 percent water change help it along ?, many thanks in advance if you can answer my questions done alot of research so far just a few minor details im unsure of before i jump into my first tank, keep up the good work mate !!

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  7 років тому

      what's up dude! welcome to the hobby. good job on your research! here is the biggest secret....crazy patience! you are doing everything right. keep that shrimp in for a week at least. you don't need to run the skimmer at all if you don't want to. there is no massive waste to remove out of the water. you may not have to run it for a few months since the water is so clean. you are correct, no water changes until ammonia is zero. i would do a weekly water change of 10% once ammonia is zero, or a week after. once ammonia is zero, add one fish at the rate of one month roughly. you need to give the tank time to get used to the fish and the fish's waste. if you put a lot of fish at once, the tank will freak and they will die....not enough time to build up bacteria to remove their fish pee.

    • @ausreefguy5362
      @ausreefguy5362 7 років тому

      Rotter Tube Reef no worries mate thanks for clearing that up .. well by the looks of it ill be good to start cycling in a few weeks .. planning on adding clownfish once its cycled, do you think adding a pair wiuld be a bad idea ?, i understand new tank syndrome etc .. just thinking out loud would adding two smaller clownfish push my bioload to the point where id be chasing my tail doing lots of water changes to remove ammonia ? anyhow cheers mate, might just add one.

    I use a brand of ammonia that has no cleaning supplicants or scent additives. Dose the tank to 1PPM then run tests once we start seeing nitrates in the water keep dosing until 1ppm can be converted to nitrates with 0 ppm of ammonia or nitrites in ~24hour period . Did all my fresh water tanks this way called it the humane way of doing it without using hearty fish approach of old hehe

    Very informative video! So i have a question for you. If you have 0 ammoina, 0 nitrite, and 20-40 nitrate does that mean that your tank is cycled? My though is that it cant be that fast... I am really confused. I got this number in a week of setting up a tank. Its a 17g tank. I used 17lbs live rock from lfs, 15 lbs caribsea live sand, 2 boxes of 5 gallon ocean water and rest premixed water. I put pinch of fish food in day 2,4,6. Also added big 8oz bottle of Bio Spira half on day 2 and rest on day 4. Today i went out and bought a API saltwater test kit and i did the test correctly. I was confused and did another test with my test strips i had and same result. I dont see any diatoms but very very small specks of brownish green fuzzy looking things. I mean that is very little on very small portion of rocks. I just want to do it right the first time. Thanks.

      @ROTTERtube  6 років тому +1

      I would say it's definitely not ready. the ammonia hasn't started yet. how long has the tank been up? It takes roughly a month. did you put food in it to start breaking down?

    • @koston777
      @koston777 6 років тому

      Rotter Tube Reef its only been 1 week. Yes i put fish food from day 2. I know it shouldnt be cycled. But why is there no ammoina or nitrite but there are 30ppm nitrate? Is that possible? If there is none of 3 but i get it but why 30ppm of nitrate? I'm confused. I guess im going to wait for a week and redo the test.

      no, let the ammonia spike and when it gets to 0, you know you have enough bacteria in the tank. artificially lowering it isn't something you want to do.

      I would go with a dead one from the butcher. No sense in killing a live shrimp. toss the dead shrimp or cocktail shrimp in the tank and let it break down, which will start the cycle. leave it there until you register ammonia in the tank...until the cycle starts.
