Still a classic and great movie!!! My parents dragged me with them to see the movie when I was 7 years old. I spent the whole movie with my face hid in my moms shoulder because I was so scared every time I heard the theme music. I had night terrors as a young child from it. Now as an adult I love the movie and watch it every chance I get. As a teen I even purchased the figures from the movie.
I guess in some point in time on next anniversary maybe, they will do color filter like they did with Jurassic Park. If one good, it will look better than perfect
This has been my favorite film of all time for the last 45 years. To this day, I still watch the movie twice a year. My home overlooks the ocean and that adds just that extra little bit of magic when I'm watching it :-)
Anybody watching this just days before the 45th Anniversary of JAWS is released on 4K Blu-ray? "It's never looked or sounded better" resonates even stronger today.
Jaws is a beautiful looking film. I could have watched it even if it had no shark. The look of this film brings me back to my youthful beach days. I don't know how Spielberg did it but he did it right. If you're in the middle of a snowy winter, try watching Jaws again. It'll bring you back to those beach days.
If you are too young to remember it, I cannot express how much this terrified an entire generation. I learned to Scuba dive when I was 21 years old in 1990 and still this movie would be on my mind whenever I went out on a boat and into the depths.
The colorist part of the process fascinates me the most. It's absolutely amazing how there was so much information in the negative that colorists were able to get rid of that yellowish tone and fully restore the entire palette of colors with accurate skin tones!
I think they look a bit darker in some scenes and being that this is an old movie, it was not necessary to make them that dark. The daylight scenes look beautiful and looks alot more natural in the day scenes.
I was 9 years old when my Mum allowed me to watch Jaws, & I remember vividly to this day how when Quint slid down the boat in to the Sharks mouth how he was coughing up blood & screaming. I had never seen blood on TV before & it just freaked me the fuck out! For weeks on end I would dream that my bed was sloping down, into the shark's mouth & wake up in a hot sweaty mess. It both petrified & electrified me. To this day I have still searched for films that scare me as much but also manage the mood & tone of the film such as Alien, Child's Play, Candyman, & The Thing. But there are not many. And I think it is to do with the fact that composers aren't allowed to get their music as prominent as John did. Rest assured, JAWS shall be one of the best films ever made forever.
Caldera Records I get what you mean for me it was the lad on the raft that made me scared and from the first time I saw the movie I’ve never been on one of those beds since
Does that mean you were born in 1966? I saw it in 1975 and i was born that year too. Unbelievable that we were let in to see that film. I will never forget the screams when the severed head floated into view in the hole in the boat.
You are beautiful. When I was a child, around 4, I witnessed Aliens, and The Exorcist. I have been a horror hound ever since. I have been on a quest my whole life to find films that scare me as much. I would say it is rare. I remember watching Hostel with my Dad in theatres and passing out, and also the Texas Chainsaw remake had the same effect. I am now 30 and nothing has the "OMFG" effect. I am so desensitized.
@@lintsandwitch6493 Yeh they should really do restoration on Fury From the Deep, Daleks Masterplan, & The Wheel in Space.. Oh.. wait. Yeh. Only America takes care of spools of film!
What do you mean "all they do is put the saturation and color up"? The BluRay spec allows 40 mbps 1080p video along with 7.1 channel surround sound, that blows DVD out of the water. If you haven't noticed, they're adjusting for film decay and technological limitations with the supervision of the original director, not randomly playing with color.
For me this movie is the best ever made. The scene (amongst many others) when Jaws shoots out of the water and lands on the back of the Orca and eats Quint was one of if not the greatest scene i have ever laid eyes on in movie cinema.
TboneNYC10 You know what TboneNYC10 my favorite film is the Lord of the Rings trilogy but Jaws is a very worthy to be called a number one favorite so I won't begrudge you on that. As far as horror and Spielberg films goes: it's perfect. Absolutely perfect!
Dude!! My all time favorite movie. I traveled 4000 miles to tour the locations of this movie. It means that much to me. I got to see this film when it premiered in 1975. I was 10 years old. No other film has had the "hold" on me that Jaws has. I loved every second of this movie. It just has such soul and feeling to it. Such a special film.
"Universal definitely has a very intense commitment to preservation and restoration of its film library" Would this commitment extend to keeping the films in a fireproof storage facility?
WB should take note and treat Superman the Movie with the same love and craft as Universal had done for Jaws. I loved this movie and so glad its been restored correctly.
You did a great job on the restoration, Universal! The only improvement I can think of in a future Atmos and other mixes is raise the level up on John Williams' opening DAAA-DUM two notes, that let us know the shark is there! We can barely hear them right now in the 7.1 mix under all those bubble sound-effects! Thankfully, you guys also provided the original mono mix as English Audio 2 DTS 2.0, thanks!
Saw it the first time in the base theater at Glasgow AFB the year it came out. I watched everyone in front of me jump when the shark first appeared as I saw in the back. It looked like a wave of humanity rollling towards me. It's too bad not everyone could of seen it for the first time in a theater (and not knowing what was going to happen).
Ikr. I grew up in the 70’s. Part of me longs for that time. But I wouldn’t be able to cope with the boredom. No home cinema, no videogames, no internet. Just books and awkward family members.
Digital storage is great and all, but it isn't proven for long term storage (how many hard drives have you or your family had crash?). A hundred years is pretty long term, and film will always be able to be projected, digital files, not so much. Plus, physical copies will be able to be created from that film master, and THOSE can last another hundred years.
@sgtpepper1138 Exatcly. In a 100 years, what operating system will be able to play files from 100 years ago? Problably none. Film can always be re-scanned though.
Robin Glader there’s always some kind of emulation or whatever to use old software on new machines, and you really don’t think the files would just be converted to the newer formats? Digital storage is far better for long term storage and preservation because the files don’t age and deteriorate like film does, and they aren’t damaged and worn out when they’re used and copied.
The blu-ray restoration of this and Poltergeist both incredible. Although there are a few parts of Poltergeist where there are a few scratched down the screen. Fuck yeah....I loved this movie since I was 3.....ever since I was always fascinated by shark...I hope to go on vacation to Australia and try some shark cage diving. Jaws is one of my favorite movie of all time.
I think DreamWorks stuff is distributed by Universal in the UK. It's part of their 100th Anniversary collection along with JP and Apollo 13 that I mentioned before. This is the second issue of it on Blu-ray as far as I'm aware. The previous one was... well, it didn't get rave reviews lets just say that much lol. They did an outstanding job on the re-release though.
I guess after reworking the original film with this special liquid to clean up the negative, these speciallists obviously then destroyed the original because there was no way to undo it. It's a shame about the film material from 74, which is no longer available in its original version. I really hope that Spielberg knew what he was doing and gave his consent.
My ONLY issue is that some foley sounds were used in the surround mix that were not original audio elements. The final gun shot and explosion especially. You hear metal wrending in there. Like it's a car explosion recording or something. They did the same thing with The Godfather. There are a few audio moments like that that sat me up and made me say, "That's not right." But, the picture is stunning and overall the whole thing is a gift.
if there are two movies that I would want to own a pristine condition 35mm film print of it would have to be The Thing(1982) and Jaws(1975) since they’re my favorite movies of all time in my Top 5
What puzzles me is Spielberg mentioned a few years ago that no more alterations would be made to his films yet if you compare the Jaws BD to the old DVD a wire balancing the buoy in the first attack scene as well as a sailboat on the horizon later on in the film are both removed. Not that this is distracting but I find it puzzling. However it's not nearly as puzzling as when I read an interview with Michael Daruty who said Steven wanted to keep the film close to the original yet they upscale the 5.1 mix, which sounds nothing like the original Oscar winning and IMO superior mono track, to 7.1!
crissrudd4554 after seeing this version on tv, since most films on tv get their latest updated version (especially if they're widely acclaimed films), I must admit that the version I originally saw as a kid vs now seems a bit better. I got the 20th anniversary VHS box set and while I greatly appreciate the restorations, the more people edit this, I honestly sense that there is a loss here. Maybe it's that beauty in seeing these mistakes that I hate not seeing anymore. Plus the sound mixing isn't really great in my opinion.
Five years too late but anyways the wire that balances is the buoy in the opening attack scene was digitally removed and a sail boat on the horizon seen the latter half of the movie was also removed.
Thank God Steven Spielberg didn't do a "George Lucas" and get the idea to replace the original shark with a CGI one, adding a few generic soundeffects and "improve" the whole thing by changing the dialogue and including some of the cut scenes which never made the theatrical cut.
They did an amazing job. The quality of the restoration is mind-blowing.
Still a classic and great movie!!! My parents dragged me with them to see the movie when I was 7 years old. Universal deserves so much praise for the blu ray of Jaws. It's probably as good as it will ever look! :)
Raised the bar so high in restoration. I now compare all blu-ray restoration releases to Jaws. So far none has come close. Superb work.
It's not that good actually.
Digital tinkering, noise reduction, the colors are a bit faded and pale...
The Godfather Coppola Restoration is, imo, the best restoration out there.

True
Indeed. It's cheaper to remaster an older film than remake it and there's a market for it in theatrical, disc and streaming re-releases!
