  • Nick is an active duty member of The United States Army Special Forces. Commonly known as Green Berets, the Special Forces perform critical missions including counterinsurgency, unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, and special reconnaissance. In 2013, on Nick's second combat rotation to Afghanistan, he and his Detachment fell victim to an insider attack ultimately resulting in the loss of his leg.
Following a year of surgeries and initial recovery including the use of a prosthetic at Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, he returned to his unit. Refusing a military medical retirement, Nick set his sights on returning to operational status. In 2015, at the conclusion of a challenging, comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate Nick's abilities to operate, he returned to his Detachment and was subsequently deployed once again to Afghanistan conducting full-spectrum combat operations. Nick is considered to be the first Green Beret to return to combat as an above-the-knee amputee.
Nick is currently serving the United States citizens as a Special Forces Warrant Officer / Assistant Detachment Commander and is widely recognized as an experienced subject matter expert in special operations, intelligence fusion, and mission planning and execution across all operational continuums. A former Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, Nick is Airborne and Combat Diver qualified, holds instructor certifications in Modern Army Combatives (MACP) and Special Operations Combatives (SOCP) programs, and is a graduate of both the Network Development Course and Unconventional Warfare Operational Design course. Nick is the first amputee to complete the Special Forces Warrant Officer Technical and Tactical Certification course, the SOCP Instructor course, and the Combat Diver Qualification course in military history.
Nick's awards include the Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, Bronze Star with “V” for valor, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Special Operations Command Excalibur Award. An extensive world traveler, Nick provides training and motivational speeches to private sector corporations, schools and universities, sports teams, and a variety of different non-profit organizations. In his TED Talk ‘Living by an Ethos,’ Nick speaks about the Warrior Mindset and the importance of sacrifice, determination, and selflessness.
Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, Nick is a husband, father, athlete, student, and author. He speaks multiple languages including Dari, Farsi, and Russian, and has earned a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

This is a true(ly) inspirational story... and may also be a lesson in the value of well-directed stubbornness, never feeling sorry for yourself, and a never quit attitude.
Personally, a huge thank you for this.

When I was a Ranger, I swear we jumped 800 ft AGL. After your 3 count out the door, you have another 5 seconds to hit the ground. And not 5 Mississippi, Just 5 seconds. When I was an instructor at SWC, we had kids in the X- Ray program, by the time they got to us they already had almost 2 years in the Army. Basic/AIT, Airborne, Sop-A, Sop-B, Sop-C, (seems like they made another Sop every time it was over crowded), Pre-Selection, Selection, hold status, then holidays, Christmas and thanksgiving break sometimes, Then the Q course. I was an IODA Cadre. These kids were Physical Fitness Beasts by then. I was in my 40’s by then. The Q Course is anywhere from 15-23 months , and don’t recycle, but that’s nearly impossible with a 25%, 1 st time Go pass rate. Oh man, CONOPS… in 2005 they were 1 page 5W, by 2013 you needed a 45 page Conop. There is a meme video on UA-cam of “Hitler” responding to the conop process…it’s funny. The 800 mg Motrin was given in big baggies because you were suppose to take 3 a day for inflammation. You know if you kept getting migraine headaches and your team Doc never annotated this in your med records, he screwed you. That’s shit the VA needs to see, headaches, diarrhea….the little shit. Like getting stitches in the teamroom, or broken fingers and toes. Any little thing, needs to get into your med records. Yeah, no shit about the base on Kandahar, the Canadians played hockey in the middle of the boardwalk. Jewelry shop..wtf. Burger king with questionable tasting meat. Pizza Hut, Loved it!…..lol, I went through the Q Course at 34, years old. I attempted (CDQC) SCUBA at 37 and body parts started to go bad. I went to that course with an injury, and that isn’t a course you can go to nursing something. I found out I was pretty bad when I was JMPI’ing jumpers…..my back was done. These stories brought back some good and bad memories, that I though I’d never miss. I miss them when I think about them, I don’t miss them when I’m dreaming about them.

    Awesome episode!
I was wondering why the color grade looked better-then I realized that Nick’s angle was cropped as well? Idk who’s on the edit but man, color looks great!

This dude is a living. Legend I have watched him on other podcast, speaking on a lot of the same things, but he’s fascinating every time.

Nick Lavery is the real McCoy. No excuses. I had flashbacks of motrin.... I swear I am more motrin than a man now. Jeez, the memories. I was with 10th Mountain out in RC East in 2011. Ugh.

How does a man with no R’s in his own language speak Russian? Amazing!

I didn't even recognize Nick without hair or maybe it's just because he's not wearing a hat.I first saw him and learned of his story during a Shawn Ryan podcast. What a beast.

Great podcast! Can't get enough of these. I use my Bluetooth speaker and listen to them while I work on my house. Makes the work more pleasurable lol. Thanks Andy, and especially a big thank you to Nick for doing it.

Thank you brother. I served in the Marines, did 3 pumps to Iraq and probably haven't gone through a 1/4 of the shit that you have gone through, but still fight demons. You and the rest of these warriors I listen to almost on a daily give me motivation to be a better version of myself, and to stay in the fight. Thanks again big dog!

That is an interesting belt setup in the thumbnail. Cross draw isn’t something you see often these days.
    PS
    Andy congrats on the marriage!

I mean I see it all the time with dudes shooting cowboy style single action guns and stuff but haven’t seen it a lot with modern belt setups. Maybe he’s onto something 🤷🏻‍♂️
