Grazie. Finally some professional level tutorials. They allow you to understand many procedures and to operate the ATR correctly. Thank you Captain Magnar.
Thanks Magnar. These are really useful. I bought the ATR a few days ago and have tried running through a few checklists. It really helps in these tutorials that you annotate on screen where we should be looking to find some of the information or controls. For example, in the "before propeller rotation" checklist, the first items is "CDLS - ON". Until this video, I had no idea what the CDLS is or where to look for it.
Amazing tutorial. Clear and comprehensive. When I was a kid I used to watch ATR's on my hometown regional airport (I don't know if kids do that kind of activity anymore) so this plane was must buy for me on the day it was released. However at that point I managed to do only casual flights and was troubled by couple details. Now I found this channel and actually learned something. This gives so much depth to the simulator. I know what plane I'm flying this weekend.
Thank you so much Captain Magna. Really appreciate you making all these professional high quality ATR tutorials. Really appreciate all the efforts you put in on the additional graphics and screen popups to make it easy for your viewers to really understand the contents. Kudos to you Captain. What a great teacher!!
Thanks again Magnar. Learning a lot from each video and looking forward to the whole series! Would also be interesting to hear your opinion on how 'realistic' or not are the physics of this aircraft.
Hey Magnar, thank you so much for all your great Videos. Two more tricks for msfs. 1) You can use the free tool "Simbrief" to generate a full Flightplan (for the ATR) with all data like fuels, payload, zfw etc. 2)Under "Options/General Options/accessibility" you can turn of the "instrument name tooltips" I guess you will find the right switches in the ATR without the big blue Pop-up Info tooltips😅 Keep Up the good work !
Do you know how to also turn off the tooltip with the eyeball that points towards a control you have highlighted but isn't in view? I can't find anything that turns that bit off and it gets rather annoying in VR
Hi, thank you very much for your tutorials, very very much! Possible to make a tutorial on how to divert to a new destination after a missed approach and in route, in the FMC? I can do it with the A320, but nothing works in the MFSF ATR. Thanks
When on FPLN page on MCDU, you press the left key of any waypoint, you will access the Lateral Navigation page for that waypoint. At the right you will find "new destination" I think just like in A320. So you can choose your new arrival airport and select STAR, approach, transition waypoint, via... Tip: if you wonder what's the nearest airport with a suitable runway to land, press three times the Direct To page and you will get a list of the nearest airport and the max available runway. Regards!
Thank you, Magnar. I have made my own, 20+ page checklist/operating procedures manual for the ATR using your videos. I can now get in the air like a professional!

HI! First of all congratulations!! You make some really interesting videos, for those like me who love flying with the ATR!! I have a question for you: is it possible to create fixes, a bit like for the 737 or the A320? The "arcs" around a point? To have references in the PFD.

Loving this series Magnar! Would you be able to cover the Idle Gate? I find this is activated in flight and throttles won’t move without de-activating. I don’t touch it but would love to know more. Thanks again!
Idle Gate prevents the power levers from getting behind Flight Idle inflight as this can lead to a loss of control of the aircraft. It is pulled and pushed automatically by the plane but in case of an electric failure (sorry I don't remember right now what bus powers this system) PM will need to pull it back manually on touchdown.
Hey, thank you very much for making this video's. I didn't know about the updated FMS initialisation steps. Apart from the bugs and limitations you already mentioned, i noticed a couple of things the sim aircraft and here too which seemed like bugs to me, so if you could actually confirm that would be great. 1. I noticed you entered cruise altitude which was higher than the initial cleared altitude of 7000 feet. But then when you later came back to perf init page again to access weights page before entering the final weights from the loadsheet, the crz altitude was changed to 7000 ft. I think this happened because you entered that altitude in the FGCP. I suspect the real plane doesn't behave like this, because otherwise you wouldn't have followed this procedure. 2. In the same page, it seemed like the alternate airport and altitude went missing too after flight plan was initialised. 3. The transition altitudes are set at 18000 ft, does the real aircraft automatically detect a transition altitude form the fms nav data and the citypair? Also, do you use the sec fpln in real life? Thanks for the videos, great learning experience.
1 and 3, I think you are right. 2, it is a bug from MSFS, hope it is fixed with the new update. In Secondary FPLN, in real life before departure it is set the Engine Out procedure, and before arrival you can insert the diversion to alternate FPLN but this is not that much necessary really, not usually done
Very good video. Only one thing - you did not cover the setting of the flight director / FMAs on the ground. The video transitioned from there being no FMAs on the PFD, to HDG (LNAV armed) and IAS (VNAV IAS armed). Are these the modes that are always used? Is there no dedicated "TOGA mode" on the flight director? I was surprised to see that IAS is armed on the ground, as wouldn't this give false FD commands until the set speed is reached? I'm not a ATR pilot and I'm not questioning your fantastic knowledge :o) I'm just interested in the FD set up prior to take off and noted that it wasn't covered here. Thanks.
Before taxi, you set up the FGCP in 6 steps: - Select Nav source 1 to FM1* - Select Nav source 2 to FM2* - Select ALT SEL to initial cleared altitude/flight level - Select coupling to the PF side - Select rwy heading on HDG SEL - Press HDG, LNAV and IAS pushbuttons** * In case of a non-gps departure (i.e. radar vectors, conventional navigation...) you may decide to select nav source 1 and 2 to V/ILS1 and 2, respectively ** Basic modes are HDG and IAS. But you can also use if appropriate LNAV (will follow horizontal flight plan) and VNAV IAS (engaged pressing VNAV before taxi, and it will follow the vertical flight plan, respecting altitude constraints) Any question feel free to ask!
Hello captain Magnar, a minegold of informations as usual. Thank you ! I have a question though when are you refuelling ? I presume before passengers are coming but at what stage is it done usually ? To remove trucks and else before taxiing the only way is to call for a push back as you would in real life. Dont you have to switch on NAV lights as soon as GPU is on ? I heard it is one way to announce groumd crew the plane is being operated. And thank you again for you for your mention about me i am much obliged to you 🙏 Like everyone else im eagerly waiting for the next video
Waiting for the third part of the splendid ATR tutorial, one question: I saw that like me you use the Thrustmaster TFRP Pedals pedalboard. How do you find the action of this peripheral ? I have some difficulty keeping the aircraft centered above about 80 knots during the takeoff roll and up to this speed on landing. I have tried various configurations and sensitivity adjustments but without great success. This happens with both the ATR and the Airbus A320. It would appear that just before generating the lift necessary to "detach" the wheels, modeling the roll makes the aircraft excessively light. I am a pilot of light propeller aircraft and I know the effect of crosswind or the need to compensate the propeller torque with the pedals in a single engine but I have never had problems when the nose wheel lifts and the main landing gear is still on ground. I would like to know your opinion or if any other subscriber has the same problem. Thank you
Hi. The rudder pedals are too sensitive. With the standard settings, it appears that full deflection is reached with half pedal deflection. Another problem is that there's no aerodynamic feedback from the rudder. Therefore, it is easy to overcorrect.
Hello! Great videos, you are getting us all familiarized with ATR so well! Have you noticed that when you fill out the rows for the FLPN to the end if the page there is no way to continue seting up the Flight Plan further. I was trying to get to a new clean Page with NEXT button, but it doesn’t do anything. Is this a bug in MSFS or is there a trick we don’t know about. This is valid when you have a flight plan with many Airways, which extend beyond one page. Thanks!
Hi, I have not experienced this problem in the aircraft. Whether this is a problem with MSFS, I cannot tell because I have only inserted the flight plan shown in the video.
The FMS uses signals from GPS, VOR and DME to calculate your position. If you change POS INIT, you cancel the information from VOR and DME. The recommendation from ATR is not to touch this page.
So I understand from the video that it is no longer necessary to initialize the GPS coordinates in MCDU by leaving the "INIT POS" line empty and no pressing "SENSORS STS" as before. Correct ? Thank you
Hello Magnar. Great tutorial but I have just a couple questions. I can't seem to get the TRU to engage when I press it. Everything else seems to work fine but for that. Second, as I have always understood it, in the real world it is SOP for ATR pilots to taxi with just one prop going. Is this just a company specific SOP thing? Thanks.
I cannot answer for the TRU. When it comes to single engine taxi, ATR no longer recommend to do it before takeoff. It is better to start the engines before taxi as it 1) otherwise takes away consentration from the crew, and 2) if there's a problem during start it is always better to stay at the parking stand. However, we do taxi single engine after landing (after a 2 minute cooling period).
Thanks for the video. Just a quick one. Does the FMS in the Asobo's ATR allow for replacing the arrival runway in case we need it? I have been flying the Asobo's ATR for a while and I could not change the arrival runway once set. I assume I am doing something wrong most likely...
Excellent tutorials! Thank you! QUESTION: How did you manage to change the trim in this video (about timestamp 18 minutes along)? Nothing I do makes it go beyond 0.0, I've watched, re-watched, and I don't see where your mouse was. ANYBODY who knows what I missed is welcome to reply to me. Again, thank you for your efforts! :D
Thank you for reaching out and helping, much appreciated. It turns out that MSFS has an annoying "AI pilot" that has default trim control so when I adjust the trim on my flight stick, the AI pilot kicks in and draws it back to 0.0. Anyway, the solution is to open the AI assistant and disable all its functions. Again, thank you for reaching out and thinks too for your excellent ATR training series, they're golden! :D @@FlywithMagnar
The hydraulic pumps run on ACW electrical power. Checklist: - Hydraulic pumps ON. - ACW generators ON. - Condition levers AUTO. - Power levers GI (Ground Idle).
I have so many questions. Like what does 'crank' do? And why do you do A and B on odd/even days and such? If I skip procedures or forget something, will the aircraft be in any danger? (flightsim enthusiast question)
CRANK means the engine starter is used to turn the engine, for example to ventilate the engine after a failed start. START A and B are the igniters. The engine has two igniters (A and B) that are used to ignite the fuel during engine start.
First I would like to congratuate on your video series. I have a problem I can't put right, somehow I've gone and put synthetic vision on the PFD screen, therefor the information is hard to see. Can this be reversed
Yes, it can. I do not have access to MS202 right now, but if I remember correctly, there's an option on the VCP when you press the NAV key a few times. The VCP is on the lower part of the MFD.
Differnt operators may have different procedures. Most operators allow the propellers to rotate in feather, as there's no forward thrust. Some opeerators allow one propeller to rotate in ground idle.
@@FlywithMagnar i see, so feather rotation is ok while pushing back, then do we wait for the ground crew to clear the aircraft before we set the condition lever to auto? Thank you for your reply Sir Magnar, i sure am learning a lot and loving this plane even more.
Engine performance depends on atmospheric temperature (and pressure.) The temperature sensors in the aircraft may not show the correct temperature, as they are relatively close to the engines, and the temperature on the apron may not be the same as on the runway. If the tempearture in the ATIS deviates from the indicated temperature, the pilots may correct the ENG SAT (engine static air temperature) with the +/- to get the correct torque (TQ) for take-off (T/O.)
Hello Captain i have a question here. How do you check the real ZFW on board in MSFS ? I can see the estimated ZFW on the FPLN Simbrief but i don't know how to check the real ZFW when i'm in MSFS. I follow all your tutorials to try to translate in French and i'll do a tutorial in french version based on your tutorial. So i try to understand and learn all the procedures for the ATR.
I find charts from AIP published online. This is a publication issued by a the relevant civil aviation autority describing regulations, airports and airways.
good evening, happy new year I would like to know how you configured the reverse for the ATR under msfs2020 please because I have a lot of difficulty doing it on my honeycomb well done? Thanks a lot
Great Video. I was wondering, in real life. there is possible to turn on the plane from cold and dark until Turn engine 2 in hotel mode without conetec a GPU?
hello Magnar. I saw the tutorial and I have to say it was very informative, as always. I have two questions to ask because I don't understand how to do it. 1- which radial must be inserted in HDG before the final taxi. In your video I saw that you entered 322° but I don't understand why. 2- although you have decided to fly higher in the CRUISE phase, I have seen that you entered 7000 ft. Why? Thank you.
1) 322 is the magnet4ic heading for runway 32. 2) As stated in the SID, the initial clearance is 7,000 ft. We always set ALT SEL to the currently cleared altitude.
Hello, thanks for the utopian really professional and valuable. Greeting from Venezuela My question please: sometimes programming de FMS I don’t know what I do and all the flightplan appear Yellow even in middle of the flight all the pages of the flightplan becomes yellow and it’s not possible to make it green again. Is this a bug of the ASOBO ATR or I am doing something wrong. Thankyou so mucho for your help
When the flight plan becomes yellow, it is because you are editing it. When you have finished editing, press the EXEC key to validate the changes, and the flight plan becomes green. This video might be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/bsJtx4yNJYE/v-deo.html
@@FlywithMagnar Thank you so much really helpfull, another issue sometimes when i start the hotel mode and after that, i switch off the EXT PWR buttom and the screens goes off i lose energy in the plane i dont know if this its a problem of the ASOBO ATR or im doing something wrong, its happen sometimes only example from 10 flights only happens once or twice. the only way is reloading the flight again
@@iamch18, I have not heard about that problem before. Random errors are hard to troubleshoot. I will report it to Asobo. Maybe others have the same problem.
Hello! I really appreciate your tutorials :) I have one issue with the plane. My NP% doesn't go over 63.5% at Ground Idle. I need to give it more throttle or else I will not have enough hydraulic pressure and power. Is that a correct value in real plane so in my updated MSFS plane it's acting differently than in your video or this is now a bug in the msfs plane?
NP should be 70.8 % at ground idle. I know the team behind the ATR model are correcting this issue for the next update. (When I made the video, I kept the power levers a little ahead of the GI position.)
@@FlywithMagnar Thank you, hope it will fixed soon! Can you also create tutorial for non-GPU startup or it's not really different from powering with auxilary power?
Aileron trim and rudder trim switches are on the pedestal (see video 1). For pitch trim, I'm using the trim wheel on my Honeycomb Bravo. I'm pretty sure there must be a key command for the trim. Can anybody help?

I am a pilot of light propeller aircraft and I know the effect of crosswind or the need to compensate the propeller torque with the pedals in a single engine but I have never had problems when the nose wheel lifts and the main landing gear is still on ground.
I would like to know your opinion or if any other subscriber has the same problem.
Thank you
Hi. The rudder pedals are too sensitive. With the standard settings, it appears that full deflection is reached with half pedal deflection. Another problem is that there's no aerodynamic feedback from the rudder. Therefore, it is easy to overcorrect.
@@FlywithMagnar thank you Sir.
Thanks for the video! Why you don’t insert the Pos Init? I don’t understand!
The FMS uses signals from GPS, VOR and DME to calculate your position. If you change POS INIT, you cancel the information from VOR and DME. The recommendation from ATR is not to touch this page.
Thank you very much!
Why does my first engine not starting now.... what is happening.... ?! Or is it a bug ?
Many thanks Magnar for your study vidéos ! How the reduce popup screens are obtened ? Mine are 50% off the screen ! Not pratically !!
Click on the corner of the popup and drag with the mouse.
Thank you 😊
When I try to start ENG 1, after the 10% NH it just stops rising and the engine never start :(
So I understand from the video that it is no longer necessary to initialize the GPS coordinates in MCDU by leaving the "INIT POS" line empty and no pressing "SENSORS STS" as before.
Correct ?
Thank you
Correct. When you activate SENSORS STS, you degrade the accuracy of the FMS because VOR/DME information is cancelled.
I haven't tested it yet. In MSFS it's possible to fly without having selected the arrival airport.
What headset do you recommend for ATR?
Excellent tutorials! Thank you! QUESTION: How did you manage to change the trim in this video (about timestamp 18 minutes along)? Nothing I do makes it go beyond 0.0, I've watched, re-watched, and I don't see where your mouse was. ANYBODY who knows what I missed is welcome to reply to me. Again, thank you for your efforts! :D
I use the trim wheel on my Honeycomb Alpha flight controller.
Thanks for the great tutorial, but I have a problem.. After staring both engines my HYD Blue/Green stay on LO PR..
The hydraulic pumps run on ACW electrical power. Checklist:
- Hydraulic pumps ON.
All sorted thanks. Not know wot you call where you set come nav there is a section for pfd synthetic vision on & off. Thanks very much 👍
Hey, great tutorial. When i start my engines though, my np stays at 50% and the hydraulics aren't working. Any ideo why?
Hard to say. It works fine for me. Check the position of the condition levers. They should be in AUTO.
This series if tutorials are amazing! i only have one question, if you have pushback truck, do we delay the prop rotation until pushback is finished?
Differnt operators may have different procedures. Most operators allow the propellers to rotate in feather, as there's no forward thrust. Some opeerators allow one propeller to rotate in ground idle.
@@FlywithMagnar i see, so feather rotation is ok while pushing back, then do we wait for the ground crew to clear the aircraft before we set the condition lever to auto? Thank you for your reply Sir Magnar, i sure am learning a lot and loving this plane even more.
@@StellaKay21 , you wait until the parking brake Is set.
@@FlywithMagnar Thank you very much Capt. I hope you dont mind me asking questions again in the future. Have a great day!
Hello. at 19:15 you can see the tab, t/o tq and the temperature is 21 degrees Celsius. What is this?
Engine performance depends on atmospheric temperature (and pressure.) The temperature sensors in the aircraft may not show the correct temperature, as they are relatively close to the engines, and the temperature on the apron may not be the same as on the runway. If the tempearture in the ATIS deviates from the indicated temperature, the pilots may correct the ENG SAT (engine static air temperature) with the +/- to get the correct torque (TQ) for take-off (T/O.)
@@FlywithMagnar ok thank you very much for your answer😃
Hello Captain i have a question here. How do you check the real ZFW on board in MSFS ? I can see the estimated ZFW on the FPLN Simbrief but i don't know how to check the real ZFW when i'm in MSFS. I follow all your tutorials to try to translate in French and i'll do a tutorial in french version based on your tutorial. So i try to understand and learn all the procedures for the ATR.
ZFW is shown in the EFB, Payload page.
Thanks you captain@@FlywithMagnar :)
I dont get where you obtained those VHF frequencies from and what they are used for.
I find charts from AIP published online. This is a publication issued by a the relevant civil aviation autority describing regulations, airports and airways.
good evening, happy new year
I would like to know how you configured the reverse for the ATR under msfs2020 please because I have a lot of difficulty doing it on my honeycomb well done? Thanks a lot
I haven't configured my Honeycomb because the engine parameters are not yet correct in the ATR model. I know the team is testing a new update.
@@FlywithMagnar Thank you very much for your answer
Great Video. I was wondering, in real life. there is possible to turn on the plane from cold and dark until Turn engine 2 in hotel mode without conetec a GPU?
Yes, you can. The engine can be started with battery power alone. We do that when GPU is not available.
@@FlywithMagnar many thank. I really appreciate your videos and effort
hello Magnar.
Greeting from Venezuela
My question please: sometimes programming de FMS I don’t know what I do and all the flightplan appear Yellow even in middle of the flight all the pages of the flightplan becomes yellow and it’s not possible to make it green again.
Is this a bug of the ASOBO ATR or I am doing something wrong.
Thankyou so mucho for your help
When the flight plan becomes yellow, it is because you are editing it. When you have finished editing, press the EXEC key to validate the changes, and the flight plan becomes green.

Thankyou the Best videos on UA-cam about systems and Tutorials a great professional have a great day.
Yes,I also have this issue,I can neither erase or execute, to get back to green.
thank you sir!!! :D
Hello captain, i have a question for you. How insert a holding pattern in the mcdu?
I will show it in Q&A #10, which is scheduled on the 15th May.
You are very kind. Thanks a lot commander. Good flights and God bless you.🙂👍
Without GPU, you do engine #2 fire test and start engine #2 in hotel mode. Then, you proceed with the rest of the tests.
Tru is on but I don't see it being turned off while later the light is not showing on anymore?
It should be ON during flight. My mistake. The video is the result of several takes, and I forgot to put it ON.
I love your accent, is it Norwegian?
Thank you.
Hello, can u share SPS download link for pc?
Unfortunately no. SPS is only available for paying customers. It is customized for their fleet and destinations.
How to adjust the trimmer?
Aileron trim and rudder trim switches are on the pedestal (see video 1). For pitch trim, I'm using the trim wheel on my Honeycomb Bravo. I'm pretty sure there must be a key command for the trim. Can anybody help?
@@FlywithMagnarHello Captain, is it like mine where I have to turn the trim wheel many many turns to make it go up or down ?
Thanks
@@FlywithMagnar yes, do we change the trim during the flight?
Grazie.
Thank you so much!
Can anyone use the sps app?
The SPS app is sold by ATR to their customers. It is quite expensive, but makes take-off performance computations easier and safer.
If there is an emergency checklist, does that mean that Asobo is looking at reproducing EMERGENCY in a future update?
I know Asobo is considering it. Let's see what the future brings.
Very nice!
Thank you for replying!
I love your movie😊
Just tried this 3 days in a row and keep getting hydro pressure failure, officially done with this plane
I wish you would stop showing movies on the ATR. It is an unsafe aircraft and has killed many people
Thanks!
