Everytime I think I know about every little known cool looking action game on the ps2, someone (usually you or Thor) pulls out another one I've never even heard of.
This, Red Faction and ZOE were the first few PS2 games I ever owned. A lot of memories associated with this game, although I beat it only recently. As a 15 year old being fairly green with this genre, I experienced fear from the abundance of harassing enemies and threat of infection. I was so nervous and unconfident in my skill that I shelved playing it for like over a decade. The game was ahead of its time in many regards but the awful last boss keeps it from being a true classic in my library.
The final boss is able to be killed with any weapon, even the knife.. though it's near impossible save for someone who has mastered the game. At the beginning of the fight, there is a ladder on your right, climb the ladder and at the top you can shoot down and he cannot hit you. He CAN throw bugs up at you, but that's it, you can kill him with any weapon without much trouble up there.
Awesome video, I was always under the impression that the only things they changed between regions was the model for Dennis. Can't believe us Europeans got shafted out of Candy Girl.

I remember playing the demo of this that was on a JamPack back in the day. Game scared the shit out of me when the Roger transformation scene happens. I think the demo ended a little bit after that. Wild finding out SWERY was behind it

I'm glad you mentioned the regional differences, great video. I always have seen this game as a spiritual sequel to Carrier for the Dreamcast the game with the ugliest cover ever.
I do have fun with "what I would do if I could give this a remake! As I did like the concepts and ideas Frankly first the whole "Cucking his dead friend" shit is replaced with him being the chicks "older brother" so the tension is they use to date till he died and a part of her unfairly blamed him for it. They aren't exactly "broken up" and I would have HINTS of it re-buding, but "NOT MAJORLY DURING A FUCKING HORROR SITUATION!" Secondly the Team would be ALOT more prominent, with members getting AT LEAST some one-note before dying! The Dog Tags would mix with this as their are some that are given to you via cutscene (because Dennis would come across their corpses gameplaywise or be there when they meet their demise), but others will die off screen "over the communication line" deaths in certain sectors! With a Means to track their "body movement" as they will get infected and Dennis/The Player can OPTIONALLY go to those areas to "put em out of their misery" and get the Dog Tags (My plan is to turn them into a "blue medallion from RE4 type reward where you get MANY unlocks based on how many you collected! The "Game given" ones would be small enough that the rewards would be "nice" but not as GRAND as getting the higher numbers or "all of them" and any NG+ will RESET the counter so you have to recollect them, "UNLESS" you're doing a NG+ where you collected them last run! In which case. You get some "rewards" everytime you get the "optional" ones and no longer really have to WORRY about them if you don't care to otherwise! And the "Traitor" angle would be better fleshed out! Namely the traitor would not be obvious and the Team Leader while he's CLEARED Dennis already from the list of Traitors. He will keep it to himself because he doesn't want to start a "who can you trust" shitshow in the middle of a HORROR situation. As for the "Evil German Stereotype Scientist" I would have him appear SOONER! Trying to HIDE he's up to know good, but being "not very sociable" (you have to be this type to be an EVIL MAD SCIENTIST WHO THINKS LETTING SOMETHING EVIL AND DANGEROUS LIKE THAT THING PROSPER AND WIPE OUT HUMANITY!) Hell I don't think they made clear how the outbreak started in the first place so I'd just OFFICIALY pin it all on him (rather then IMPLYING, seeing how he shows up VERY late with I believe "LITTLE FORESHADOWING" like the writer was like "well Got to add my generic evil scientist villain" where he would have been better served with the other survivors! Hell he could cause the death of SOME of them and even the team along with "the traitor" at points in the story till it becomes OBVIOUS of his sabotage. Also for the INFECTED Team Members! Those gun toting Infected are regulated to THEM! The other ones would have "compromised weapons" hence while they'll (the infected of the Site's dead guards) fire wildly at LOW accuracy as long as you're careful in your placement they'll miss! The point is to get close enough to hit you in Melee. I want the Infected monsters and such to be put in "Two categories" the smaller ones like the Leeches are easier to make despite their weakness and so are numerous and respawning (limited SPEED in respawning) while larger infections are HARDER to make, so they HAVE no respawn once you deal with them! Though they can be ANNOYING to deal with (not annoying as they are IN THIS GAME. Just more challenging! Like how in) also they have drop rates (though the BIGGER ones like Guards have drop rates) of ammo, health item and maybe weak charges for the battery so you don't have to backtrack so hard (though weak means if you were clumsy with usage but not so badly! Then having one give you ANOTHER charge before you have to return to a Charge station can be good) and I'm only keeping it on the HUMANOID enemies because they either HAD it on themselves before the succumb or they have enough intelligence to pick them up elsewhere hence why they have them. This also applies to the Vaccines which I'll figure the alien virus is "studying" how to counter the infection via it's infected, so that's why their carrying them about as their lumbering to spread more of the infection around! The Vaccine comes in THREE categories. Portable, which are RARE as you finding them, and "have to use at a save station" which are more uncommon. A super version of it will be available like the Save Function. But they will be Limited and only given at the end of the game (For the final boss to allow you a BETTER way to deal with the infection. If you were conservative with the Portable Vaccine's! Then you have more ways to deal with infection at the end) Also the moment you GET the rocket launcher! You get a DECENT amount of rockets AND they'll spawn in the environment and even be RARE drops! You'll even get a good amount for the finale. Difficulty States before playing can make things harder or easier for yourself "play your way" and I'd like to take from a few JRPG NG+ in letting YOU decide what you'll bring into you're new game along with some nice rewards (not much use in EASY mode. But could be in Normal and ESPECIALLY in Hard mode) of course all are unlocked if you got all the Dog Tags! (Even would have an effect on the ending, Dennis feeling "some" bittersweet in not getting the team's dog tags before they NUKED the site or some happiness in the situation that he was able to bring back a PIECE of each team mate ALIVE! Along with the Traitor if ONLY because it will help along with OTHER stuff the Captain had gathered on the guy, his mission AND who might have had him placed on the team so they in the CIA will get "RIPPED TO PIECES" back home for stupidly wanting to KEEP something that dangerous alive and the whole "being sneaky Pieces of team killing garbage! Even if Dennis doesn't get the optional ones, the traitor is gained automatically so their is some GOOD in the bittersweet! But it's a full happy survivor ending) Infection would still be in the game. But would be BETTER balanced! I'm going to handwave that Dennis is one of the RARE High Resistance types. But remember "resistance does NOT mean Immunity" so he can STILL be infected (I'd have some characters in the story ALSO display this, As a funny, I'd make the Captain Immune, so his death gets ALOT worse and increase determination to keep this thing from escaping because Now. I'd also make him a Macguffin for the Traitor who reports this to his superiors who marked the Captain as a "non killable target" which leaves the traitor VULNERABLE when he tries to incapacitate the Captain, resulting in his death.) I'd better explain the whole "water thing" with how Denis at certain infection levels starts getting HURT by water. Yet it gets infected too! I'd put in files or such explains it's ability to think and is trying to ADJUST itself to better survive. Which it "succeeds in" with the final boss form (Scientist dude survived long enough to have found a way to help it "reach" that goal of ultimate survival and gave his body to it for "nourishment" since he's dying anyway! What he made for it needed him to go into the area the survivors were hiding in, hence his "deception as another survivor" as he got in the way to DELAY the Strike Team and Survivors till he could HELP the creature) Hell it will be made VERY clear the reason it takes Dennis form at the end is because it "identified him as an APEX Predator" and using ALL the knowledge of it's encounters with him (as all the infected are connected to it, so it had LOT of information on Dennis at this point) it takes it's final form as Dennis! Now depending on you're attachments. He'll be sporting "lookalikes" of them as well! Though the Rocket Launcher is OPTIONAL as I don't want to make a BULLSHIT Final Boss worse. But BETTER. And fix his fight abit. Make the area MORE spacious then it is already to avoid you getting easily cornered Weapon wise, I'd keep the Assault Rifle as near unlimited ammo "like" but at "special clips" that can play with the function and even change the function of the rounds and fire or such (like one that lowers Fire Rate, but INCREASE Stopping Power! Or one that increases Ammo amount before a reload and Faster Fire Rate but lower stopping power in exchange!) while the Attachments would have use! Now the Battery function for the Saving would be removed, BUT the requirements for puzzle solving would be still there and Stations aren't so close that you can just simply recharge easily! I feel the function SHOULD have meaning so when you drain them, they will take a while in game time to recharge to full, sort of how the Kerosene was finite, but not to a level to be frustrated. The idea of this is their will be OPTIONAL areas that will drain power from the portable battery! So you have to weight if you want to use some to go into those areas, but may require you to trudge back to a Station to recharge if you weren't being smart and conservative with your charges (I'd likely add something to have Dennis make CLEAR to the audience "he doesn't have to go this way" so you know it's an optional area or something) Well that's my shooting the breeze
An excellent video! Thanks for confirming that the European version has buffed enemy health! I've couple of things to add about the regional differences... Aside from stacking the player with ammo, the pseudo new game plus mode in the North American & Japanese versions doubles the enemy health as well. And "Candy Girl" plays in the Japanese version, too, so the PAL players got shafted with 50 Hz, the lack of English subs, spot script inaccuracies, and the beautiful credits roll cheese.
It's a crime that Blue Stinger is not in the Christmas game list of Wikipedia! I've always considered Extermination to be a sister game to Blue Stinger. Unfortunately, I have never played it seriously. Maybe next Christmas. :)
A long time ago I had the opportunity to play a similar game at a friend's place. It was called Countdown Vampires. Maybe it is good too, i must check again sometime. These type of comedy horror games are almost their own genre. I love them. :)
Never played this game, but I always thought the Japanese cover art was cool. Dance Dance Revolution Extreme has a track/MV with Heather lip-synching "You're not here" so you might be onto something.

I want this game but I never see it around. There's a copy at my local shop and it has a sticker on the inner ring AND another plastic sticker on the top of the disc. Yeah, no thanks - those are red flags for a collector like me.
I remember getting to the last boss and not being able to get through the 2 phase it's such a garbage fight. It was really a let down considering how forgivable the game was to the player up to that point. Other than that boss fight I really think this is quite the hidden gem I definitely prefer this to spy fiction.

Other than that boss fight I really think this is quite the hidden gem I definitely prefer this to spy fiction.
