  • This week Im going to discuss the costs of doing a project like this, and finally reveal what I paid for the White Shark! ... and prove how bad my maths is (despite having a degree in Maths!)
Welcome back guys to my Porsche 928 restoration! I bought the cheapest 928 in the UK and its going to be a battle to bring her back to life...
... and to make matter worse, Im not a mechanic! Im just a regular guy 'having a go', and it doesn't always work out!

Nice to know more about the cost side of things :) £3k was a bargain... I've restored a couple of 928s (some are shown on my UA-cam channel) and my first port of call EVERY TIME for parts is my local Porsche dealer, you'd be surprised how competitive they are - 9 out of 10 times they will be cheaper than 3rd party suppliers and even more interestingly they are nearly always cheaper for brand new parts compared with second hand ones. If you are looking at teledials make sure they are 16x7" all round with an offset of 65 all round. the 944 ones don't fit and the 15" look rubbish (in my opinion!) Looking forward to more updates, keep them coming :)

Hey Llewelyn, I must call the local Porsche dealer! The teledials are the correct part number so I (hope) they are correct :)

Just found your video, I purchased a 1984 928S in 2010 when I lived in Melbourne Australia, non runner for $6000 AUD. (around £3000). After removing the engine I found that a piston was damaged and had damaged the bore, so I ordered a Alusil sleeve from Germany and had it installed and purchased a new Male piston. When I was installing the piston I damaged the new bore with the (I now suppose) incorrect supplied sized piston rings. So I had all 8 bores sleeved this time with steel liners and had forged pistons made.
Then every item was either sent away to be serviced or replaced, (heads, MAF, ECU etc). The money starts to run away with the project and you just have to carry on otherwise you end up waisting a lot of your money.
Luckily the prices have increased since I finally got it on the road 2019, and when we returned to the UK, it was one of the three cars I returned with. I have never priced up all of the costs, but reckon parts and machine work would be around $8000 (£4000). I did the work myself with help from a knowledgeable friend, so no labour costs were involved.

Enjoying the series Todd. I own a 928 S4 MY89 in Guards Red. Have owned it for about 10 years and the car gets used (not a daily driver) and has undertaken many long trips. I love my 928. I do as much of my own maintenance as possible. It is in good condition. Admittedly, I bought a good car and the value has probably doubled in the time I have owned it. In the local Landshark community back in the day we would always say these are a $50,000 car.....it just depends on where you start LOL. Looking forward to seeing (and hearing) the final finished car. Cheers

@@MrToddgibbs The video you did was just great and it certainly gives folks a complete insight as to what they might expect when considering purchasing an older classic car for rebuild.
It's hard to believe that the car is 41yrs old as I remember looking at a nearly new model that was a manual version with cream hide back in the day that was being sold at a car dealership namely Martin H Gregory in Richmond Surrey.
I believe the car was eventually sold to a businessman near Birmingham.
I do like the 928S, I love its iconic shape and I believe there are a handful here in Taiwan BUT I haven't actually seen one driving on the roads.
In 2009/2010 I bought a fully loaded brand new Infiniti FX35 AWD sport to run around in.
I became attracted to this particular vehicle purely due to its ugly design and its V6 powerplant. The SUV gave me some wonderful times and I had no real issues with it, however it was a really unpractible vehicle to own.
Although I just purchased another new car for my wife and she's happy with it, I'm contemplating what's next for me, I'd consider an accident damaged vehicle as a project here :)

For what it's worth I'm getting a 928 S4 restored. It had sat for about 10 years in Virginia in a garage that was open to the air. It was running ok with the exception of an electrical fault at that time. So far I have transported it twice and paid $16191 for a mass air flow sensor, fuel pump relay, ECU replacement, rebuilt fuel injectors and more. The more I learn the more I'm being told it might be up to $30k to just get running. You've been doing all the labor yourself, several hours a week it looks like for... 3 years? At $75 US an hour, conservatively 3 hours a week comes out to $35100 for 3 years in labor, plus $8264 (6500 pounds in todays exchange rate) = $43364. Recent videos appear as though the car is very close to not only driveable but just a few more bits and bobs until it gets a new paint job, which if you're doing yourself might just put you shy of $45k.

Just started watching this series. Got caught up today. I am in the market for a 928 to drive and have fun. I am trying to decide on buying a non runner like yours or get one that is 90% good for more money. Either way, it is interesting and beneficial to watch your journey. I really appreciate the engineering that went into the 928... I don't consider it a fragile car. I can't wait to buy one. Great videos! Thank you.

    • @MrToddgibbs
      @MrToddgibbs  3 роки тому

Hey Rome - Ah that big decision... I think the rule is buy as good as you can afford. Its never cheaper to do it my way, but then again it depends on what you are buying one for. I wanted a project, I wanted to disassemble an engine, etc... If thats not your thing I would heavily recommend getting a runner with a few cosmetic issues. I saw another recommendation to get the best interior you can find as that is where the money goes...
Whatever you decide, please let me know and I hope the videos remain useful and entertaining!

I took a punt on my 928, bought on eBay 5 years ago. Flew one way with a nervous 300 mile drive home, very few of the electrics worked but the important stuff worked and made it without drama and 2 tanks if fuel. As you say, makes life interesting. If you're really stuck for parts then Roger Tyson in the US will have it.

Hi Tod, yep been slowly getting all the electrics working again and catching up on deferred maintenance. I also tracked all my costs and, other than getting the steering rack rebuilt by a specialist, the labour was all me. I've averaged €2,000 per year excluding fuel which is not crazy, now I'm mostly in maintenance mode it is trending downwards pretty fast but still can't resist an eBay bargain.

Hi Todd... It's a1986 4.7 s. The colour is gun metal grey, automatic and it runs.
The belt light was on when I got it, very faintly tho and the chap said it was changed a couple of thousand miles ago and would need tightening etc. I bought the belt tester and when I tested it it was far too tight..I set it to the belt tester and the warning light was then on full...
