Was this made for me? When you asked for disaster saves I was first to comment and I said all my saves are disaster saves,
Nearly September 1937 for Anschluss seems really late. Is there a reason for the delay?
@Raitar100 it allows the Austrian AI to actually build stuff and dos focuses that yield.more factories overall. It ends up being better, trust me
@@Bitt3rSteel well damn
Bittersteel can you play as Montego in the great war redux and refuse Austria Hungary's demand of retreat from the coast.
"you don't know how to play the german rice" greeted with this first line of subtitle. I loved the video already 10/10
I just started a Germany game yesterday. Major fuck ups later... I am already at war with Russia and haven't even touched the low countries... Sooo perfect video at perfect time XD
I love that Bittersteel refuses to steal from Hungary for legitimate moral reasons while roleplaying one of the most evil dictatorships in history. Hearts of Iron is just the best. Love your videos man!

Germany, Italy, and the USSR make me wish you could preload a preferred setup for a country when you start a game. Military orders, production, and focus all cued up in advance so you don't have to do the same thing manually every time you load in, like how in Bethesda games you can make a save right before leaving the tutorial area to skip the intro.
Also the Gombos Trade Treaty is definitely worth picking on Historical since Hungary always bends the knee regardless. And Kesselring is best while the Spanish Civil War is ongoing because with him you can easily finish your whole Air Doctrine before 1939. And getting Organization Todt then switching to Goering is ideal for building up then getting the resources needed for Autarky Achieved.
So Hungary on historical always joins the axis anyways?
yes yes yes i hate organizing especially the navy every single game i start
@Pasta-mh8wx Yes. They'll turn you down a couple of times before WW2 but after the Vienna Awards you'll have them in your pocket before Barbarossa.
You honestly don't even need them on side before Barbarossa since the primary benefit they offer in single player is having a solid front line.
@@KAPTAINmORGANnWo4eva Thanks for answering. Yeah I also think they arent really needed, just an okay distraction for the Soviets. I also noticed in historical games, when playing basically any other country except Germany, that the Germans somehow get Hungary as a puppet. Like the ruling party becomes the National Social one. Not sure how to do this as Germany though, there isnt a puppet Hungary focus, there used to be one in the old tree I believe. Now there are many ways to puppet Hungary, I know, but a little larp wouldnt hurt from time to time. Thank you for responding.
@@KAPTAINmORGANnWo4eva You actually can do that already, in the same way as in your Bethesda example. It's just done in the files system so it's extra work. But it can be done. It might not save huge amounts of time, but depending on how fast you are and how much stuff needs managing, might save up to a minute or two.
Go to your "Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV\save games" folder, create a "backups" folder in there, and copy any saves you want into there. When you want to start a new game, simply copy-paste the relevant backup save back to the parent folder. The save game is there in the list of loadable saves in-game.
Works even with ironman saves. That's the way to save scum in ironman. You don't have to do it if you don't want to, but at least now you know the option exists for those very annoying achievement runs.

Germany is the default character.
I really wish airplanes would just train during the day by default. It never fails if I click that button for training I will forget to click it back when war happens lol.
Oh yeah...absolutely
You can shift click on anything trainable and it'll stop once they can't be trained anymore.
Planes have the sad effect of crashing all the damn time tho, so they might still perma train
Omg the research and focus list is what I’ve always dreamed of…. No more clicking on my tiny phone to replay a part and trying to see what the focus was on my tiny screen…. I know I could have it on one of my computer screens but I just CANT tolerate hearing hoi4 noise and my guide coming from the same audio source. Plus my phone can sit between my arms when I’m at the keyboard.
I have been grinding as Germany on this new DLC for two weeks after I have completed my Fall semester of college, and I am happy to see that you have posted to see the Bitt3rSteel way. Thank you for this!
I personally choose Hess over Bormann simply because he gives +15% MIO research bonus later on. Bormann just gives you pp discounts, which you don't really struggle with Germany simply because you gain tons of it
In hindsight, a mistake on my part.yes
Takes a lot of effort to do what you do. With the updated UK defense, I needed to check this out and find a new way to sealion. Thanks man.
This took me to my first victory as Germany, I didn’t know the importance of just massive amounts of air, previously I was going for good ole 7-2 infantry artillery, and my divisions would just grind. A couple things to note here, move up your conscription law, I had forgotten too. Secondly, bitter steel grabs the medium tank tech pretty early, and pushes hard on plane research.
Can you tell me how you got enough oil to get rid of economy of conquest?

You’re damn right I suck at Germany. For some reason, I’m way better at playing minor nations (like Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, etc) instead of major nations.
Minor nations are fun because you can just spearhead your way into the enemy territory while using your allies' infantry as place holders
Playing minors means less micro, and less focus-splitting. You're not running campaigns in 2-3 fronts, with air, sea and land, and everything else.
@@jomp6141 you can do that as a major too, it depends what your faction looks like overall though.
Plus I absolutely love doing stuff like sending France a massive amount of lend lease at the start of the war, as the US or UK, to let bleed the germans out a bunch before they fall. Plus I find when I do play as a minor power my goal most the time turns into turning into a major power to go after whichever ai annoyed me the most lol
the only major i ever play are the soviets
This guide actually helped me a lot with the new Germany mechanics and I actually got the True Blitzkrieg achievement on accident
To be honest I thought Blake's Takes was venturing into new content for a second there. If you like Total War: Warhammer 3 and want to get better I suggest taking a look at this content as well. Grateful as ever for the learning Bittersteal, as well as the humour. From a grateful Canadian, Merry Christmas my Belgian friend.
What about sending the mountaineer and the cavalry (convert that to mountaineer) to Italy against Ethiopia? you can also send air volunteers, and its great for grinding terrain traits so you can them closer to adaptable! Also, one other thing, Hess is way better than Bormann, not only does he give you more pp, but crucially, he gives you as MASSIVE research boost when using an MIO!
Honestly, I just forgot.
@@Bitt3rSteel Aw shucks, guess that means you gotta do another Germany guide!
I rarely ever leave comments but I just wanted to thank you for this guide! Finally, a video marketed as a guide that doesn't skip essential steps or explanations as to why you do things the way that you have!
And actually works
One small constructive critique, if you can build radar along the channel (benelux or calais) you can gain naval superiority easier.
Absolutely valid!
@@Bitt3rSteeli have a question. Ot doesn't give me the choice for medium tanks till 1938. Should I just research them earlier?
1939 I meant
@weswolverine if you want tanks get them starting in 1937 or when you get the bonuses. I've started tank research in 36 with the right bonuses.
@@KriegDantioch dang, should've done that. Currently in 1938 and my research for them in almost done, so I'll go into 1939 with little medium tanks. You think I should be able to build enough up for war in September 1939?
You should include a list for PP usage as well (who to get when). Great guide, good balance of strength but simple for newer players (or those who are coming back after the new DLC).
Since I’m new to the game I like using this as a basic guide but I’m only following along a little bit so I can learn the game better and have more fun
Thanks, Bittersteel you don't know how much i needed this, especially after the update. Merry Christmas!
Right off the bat, state modifiers. Those are so freakin’ easy to forget about when you’re playing anyone BUT Spain; so much so that this video reminded me of them.

How does Navy work?
@@saltvault8943 for the habukuk I'm willing 2 learn
I have no idea how Navy works, I just know that the AI is somehow worse at it than I am.
task force of spotters set to never engage and set to spotting (need 6 task forces of spotters to cover 6 sea regions efficiently for example). spotting supports every other task type. strike force is for your task force with your battle fleet. they sit in port until enemy fleets are spotted. they leave port and b-line to said enemy fleet and engage it. set to engage at medium risk (especially if you have a self built navy of say 100 ships you made yourself and upgraded). convoy raiding is best for subs, but cruisers and destroyers can do the job. does just that, raid convoys (including land divisions transporting across open waters). set to engage at low risk, so basically only convoys are engaged. escort, 1 heavy cruiser, 2 lights for AA and depth charge, and 4-6 multi-role destroyers. they seek and destroy convoy raiders (subs) while being capable of defending against air while doing it. as said, spotters will compliment every other task type even if they are in a different fleet (different admiral), but only if those fleets are operating tasks in the same regions as the spotters. escorts should have their own admiral, same for subs. i keep my strike force in the same fleet as spotters, setting the task of strike force will cover the same regions that the spotters are covering, so a port that is in the middle of the regions you are covering is just so your battle fleet has more chance of intercepting enemy navies. if you dont care about achievements, get the mod for unlimited dockyards per ship line. 3-4 years for capital ships is stupid. 250 dockyards on a super battleship to complete in a month is best (you only need one ever anyways). singleplayer, "fleet in being" is perfect for my preference to battleships over carriers, i make at least 4 for the battle fleet but still. give it a go! Greece going Byzantines is always fun to make a strong fleet. Argentina fascist is great for going for a strong fleet. none of it is worth it if you dont use the mod. it takes the whole game to create a good fleet. even just 100 dockyards by 38-39 you can still get a good navy out before Germany v USSR.
and one more thing. if you do not start teched into much or any navy at all, at the very least get deck conversions for carriers. if you choose a country with war goals, any annex cruisers can be refitted into what i call "light carriers". you wont have to tech any further if you dont need the range. MIO policy for space efficient for the range and deck size of carriers. 1940 tech upgrades on a light carrier is around 6.6k production. tack on the naval refit thing and youll have over a dozen carriers from the annexed fleets. swap your own designs in specific task groups out for the ones you get through conquest (most of the time the ai only ever stays with the early ship hulls unless already teched into '36). apparently torpedoes dont really work like they look like they do. besides, it is way cooler to have battleships/battlecruisers sinking other capital ships. heavy cruisers and light carriers are a great way to compete against capitals without the need for massive resources. stick to steel only designs if you play a minor unless you will get claims on chromium states.
Really nerdy tips:
* For ships mios for subs minimize surface visibility, maximize speed, for bigger ships you can maximise the HP, armor and heavy damage.
* For Spain you can:
1) get the 5lvl fieldm as spain gen
2) switch and maxxing your gen as spain gen and assign 5lvl fieldm as spain fieldm
3) when 5 lvl reached, assign individual preferred tactic as blitz/breakthrough in general/fieldm trait window
4) assign national preferred tactic in staff menu as elastic defence/backhand blow
This would outperform the fighting luck to your advantage!
59:06 I know a future challenge for you mister Bitter…
The intro kinda offended me (700h deep in hoi4)😂😂, but overall brilliant and well made video. Good job sir ❤️❤️
Thanks 😅
The number of times I ask myself: "BUT WHY!?" while watching your guides is frustrating. Why are you doing what you are doing? Please explain why you make decisions so the guide can be valuable for a broader understanding of the game.
What's the point in getting Göbbles first? Wouldn't it be better to get Todt as early as possible for the civ and infrastructure construction speed? Then do reorganize the Wehrmacht and you can get early War economy anyway
Faster and opportunities to take economy instead
You could also start with Hess, since he has MIO research bonus by 1938, that way you can rush 1940 tanks and light planes designs pretty quickly
Didn't include Basic Machine Tools (BMT) in your research list. Kind of threw me off at first until I found the exact spot in the video for the starting research (5:25)
Oh shit
@@Bitt3rSteel Thanks for fixing it man. Now me (a bad player) can get my act together.
Reliability on things like guns is more beneficial if you are playing a minor and are not quite as able to keep up with the production. A high reliability makes it that some equipment can be recovered after a battle win or lose.
first time i came across one of your videos, and in the first sentence of the vid you spoke to me, im honoured
OMG i needed this i can have an army of 4 million and not be able to defeat france at all on the simplest level
I played Hoi4 black ice mod on the higgest difficulty as Germany because those bastards call you out for your difficulty choice and I still managed to finish off the soviets
I would add that the invasion of the UK can benifit from tge Super Heavy Railway Gun project. If you park it at Calais it can hit Dover, which flattens the defender when you invade.
An actual good guide he made defending the allies so easy
i followed along up until 1939, where i decided to try taking on the world by myself. in june 1942 i capitulated the us, with japan still to go (they declared war on me since i took the dutch east indies). hoping to capitulate em sometime early into 1943 considering i have quite the beefy navy and airforce
thank you for this video!
Such an awesome, helpful guide! Thank you so much!!
how do you know i just lost to soviet union as mr mustache man smh
Thank you so much for the breakdown on research and focus order. That was the one bit that was kind of hard to follow on the last german video. For future, if its not too difficult, could you also include what you did with political power? That was the other thing that was hard to follow on the last video. Whenever I would compare my run with yours I never new what you did with your political power expenditure.
That little ball with the tanks are actually very cute in the thumbnail, ngl.
Michigan is 2 peninsulas lol. That northern bit attached to Wisconsin is Michigan lol. Still a great video lol
My bad
Wild I come across this video just as I'm on my 2nd day ever playing and I'm running Germany!
This tutorial actually works pretty well, i have a few questions though, what about Reichskommissariats? which ones should I make and the Soviets keep capturing my operatives, what do I do there?
Make all RKs in areas where you don't have cores. Especiallyif you still have economy of conquest.
Best spies to use would be seducers, and after using the local spies upgrade, using Soviet nationality spies. Those are harder to catch in the USSR
Ussr in singleplayer is kinda bad, just focus on having good supply and make your tank divisions to lead the way. Focus on soft attack since vanilla AI tanks suck
Great tutorial, one tip though, if you accidentally build fuel silos the whole game instead of refineries, invading Britain is gonna be a bad time.
even though i already beat the game with Germany i'm still watching xp
55:45 I think it needs to be stressed that you put the planes back to missions day and night here. While I adopted your strategy of day training I often forget to revert that in a war which means for half of the fight the air force is grounded. And I am probably not the only one.
Thank u for this comment
Watching this as I prep NYE dinner aha. Loving it. Only question I got is, would you be willing to make a similar video featuring BICE?

Now, do a video about how the allies can best beat a Germany following these instructions
Wouldn't it be easier to conquer the Netherlands and Dutch East Indies early? Puppet them and leverage war reparations and resource rights to boost production and the economy. Conquest replaces the "Miffó bills" modifier, which is cheaper (2.5% consumer goods per month instead of 3%). Yes, a valuable advisor will be lost (the other advisor also reduces consumer goods but without boosting military factory construction), but it is worthwhile; the Allies usually won't prevent resource delivery throughout the war.
I'm trying to keep things historical.
thank you for this turorial. Really helped alot. What country next?
Great guide, super helpful in my first world conquest run. 2 questions though-
1- Why does German France absorb Vichy after the Allies war ends?
2- how did you form the American Reichskommissariat that included Canada, when you had Canada puppeted and not annexed? For me I have to have the state fully annexed.
New hobby: grab a pack of beer and watch bittersteels videos lmao
Thanks, very helpful!
I just figured out the reason I hate playing minor nations on Iron man, this is my first time going for an achievement in a while, and I decided to do The München Disagreement. I wanted to test my knowledge of the game as ISP taught me through one of his videos that going for 1 engine is better than 2 engines, which is what I was doing. So far everything was good I only lost one province because I moved a tank to defend another and the unit to move in after it couldn't get there in time so it was lost, they almost made a breakthrough but through a force attack I cut it off and encircled and destroyed one light tank Division. Well, later, Hungary joined, and I held them off, but Italy declared war on Greece bringing the allies in, and I joined the allies, and so did Romania, who was in the war as they guaranteed me. Then, the Romanians pulled the amazing move of abandoning their southern flank in Bulgaria to reinforce my position in the Sudetenland, thus giving Bulgaria free real estate. Also, I had turned off allies' supply, specifically in case that happened. I hate it when you can do so well, but then the AI shoots you and itself in the foot
I did manage to get the achievement but I definitely won't play another minor nation on iron man until i have a better idea of what I'm doing

@@Bitt3rSteel my hot take (hot hot hot) is that it's, what, the fourth guide on Nazi Germany in a year? Not trying to be a dick, I am just throwing stuff at the wall germanly.
Hey man, cool video, did you changed the Infantry Template at some point in the video ? I can't seem to find it. Is the standard Template good enough ?
22:44 this man hates Herman Göring and the Belgian Rexist leader more then anyone in the world
I don’t know why everyone waits to annex Austria, I was done with Anschluss by the June 1936. Instead of building all those civs you could just get like 10 civs by annexing Austria
If you hire Göring then you cannot complete parts of your air tree. Germany starts out with maluses to its air force that harm your ability to supply air wings.
At the end of this game starts "Man in high castle" :D
How do you get to the range improvements in the aircraft research? Mine is not there, not on any research for tanks or other. Also special projects, only 1 option for me. Are these expansions? I have some, not all
Building radar near the channel might also help no?
Yeah, butnifind that it isn't really needed by that point!
Hey Bittersteel, quick thing. Goebbels was nerfed to only give 5 percent war support instead of 10, so that kind of breaks your strategy.
It doesn't. You only need the 5%
@ It made it so I couldn’t switch to war economy
@@ShadowFundsX I've been having that problem too. Goebbels brings war support up to only 46% for me.
I really like this update to Germany, it makes it feel like a much more well earned victory against the Soviets. It's much weaker, yes(economy is about 20 civs smaller heading into war). On old patches I could cap the Soviets within 6 months, now it easily takes into spring of 42'. I don't see the AI as much smarter though, if anything the Soviets are easier to pocket this patch because of how hard they try to stop you from closing pockets, which makes them bigger.
Ha. Choose to play your Historical SuperReich. We all know Kaiserin Victoria is the one we need. She's the Woman of the High Castle!
I may have missed it, but I didn't see you actually add any special projects units (heavy howitzers, etc.) into your divisions. How do you typically use them?
Germany actually did historically side with China up until they signed the tripartied pact. They sent them military support and such.
Also, learned that with german, is better not to occupy everything. Gaining compliance is much harder than for example UK or democracies
There is just no way that the right economy path is better than left economy path.
It is if you win fast enough
@@Bitt3rSteel Yeah but what's the point of playing after winning anyway? Left path makes the actual playthrough(1936-end of the campaign against USSR) more enjoyable since your economy isn't stifled.
@@Octavian999 it’s fun if you want to roleplay the actual way Germany went historically.

Its a simple question of when, if your point of measurement is September 1939 then right if absolutely so much better. If you say June 1941, left is probably better. Thats the exact choice the developer's intended and I think thats pretty good.

Are that infantry templates from the start of the war good for an MP game? Or are they just for single player games ?
No matter what I do, I can never get pass Belgium, my last run I followed this tutorial, made the best divisions for the meta of single player the best tanks and even had everything fully equipped. HRE next please
psst. Bittersteel

You can always be a pirate
if you really want to be historical, you should be doing Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact RIGHT BEFORE doing Danzig or War, declare on the Soviets in mid 41, and then go after the US after defeating the Soviets. The soviets are Germany's main enemy and thus should be prioritized, plus they get so much stronger between 1941 and 42 on historical.
Honestly, I find the soviets to be fairly irrelevant
@@Bitt3rSteel true, i can destroy them way faster than you did, though, on the historical date, 24 30 width medium tank divisions, divided into 4 panzers corps spread across the front line to make large encirclements, can capitulate them with only one collab government by the end of September. You can’t do sloped armor though if you want enough to make that many in time.
